No wonder he enjoys being an artist more. He made boatloads of money from being a musician (eventually, after being absolutely shafted by the band's manager) and he's now got a comfortable lifestyle where he can do what he wants and not have to mark time.

I remember seeing a blazing fire upon the hill from the view of my window a few years ago, and went for a walk to see what it could be. Turned up and saw a barn burning down, firefighters trying to do something but the fire was just out of control. The next day there were rumours around the countryside of this belonging to the "drummer of Guns and Roses". I knew instantly what band was meant, true enough, the next day there was a report on John Squire's barn at the edge of Macclesfield, burning down, with over a decade's worth of art inside. Squire was on tour with the Roses at the time I think, and I remember thinking what a tragedy that was, and how surreal it was to witness it happening. I hope the loss of the art didn't demotivate him, and that he's still shacked up, making it to this day.

Squire is wrong though, the album art isn't dated, nor is the music on them... The Stone Roses are more relevant and have more to say than 99.9% of all currently charting music... and I'm begging them on my knees for a third album. But if they don't, I have that amazing debut, a HUGELY misunderstood follow up album and a host of B-sides to keep me company.

I just didn't think his solo that day was particularly good and wasn't even melodic in any way, it was just cocaine fuelled running through scales with no real musicality to it. I live near a school that teaches 'rock guitar' and as I pass by I sometimes wonder if there are other John Squires in there ready to go for that axe only to put it down later and admit that it was 'something they did while they were growing up'. As someone who plays an instrument and watching John Squire here, I cannot help thinking 'what a waste of talent'. Why could he not do both? It never stopped Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Wood and various others. Just keep adding to what you already know.

@steven hicks my thoughts on Johnny Marr - you only have to read his autobiography to realise he cares more about his current fitness programme than the fact that he spent most of the mid eighties composing Smiths songs !

I found it interesting to see in the last part of this clip that he has some what of a passion to re-group with the crew.
Whos knows if that will ever happen, most likly not, and as someone mentioned on here, Ians vocal chords are startin to stretch to there last potential ( if ever he had any potential :D )
I think a fkin epic, monumental movie in tribute to the Roses would make them come together.

At the end of the day John can do whatever he wants to do. Yes i love The Roses and i enjoy Ian and Johns solo work but if he wants to live the quiet life amongst his brushes then so be it. He will always be a major influence on me picking up a guitar all those years ago. Take it easy John

As naive as it sounds, I just want them all to be happy. They have given so much to so many over the years, they deserve it.
I also think Squire is quite a gifted artist. His work seems very intuitive and brave. I like the way he uses numbers, it makes sense for a musician, doesn't it? After all, rhythm is repetition and it's present in painting, sculpture, music, really every artistic discipline.

one of the greatest guitarists ever, it was a shame to watch him work in silence but to hang up the guitar with that kind of talent it's sad, but if he's happy doing his art then fair play lad

@johnmcluskey True, but Joni had talent from a young age as well. She would say that she ran towards either art when the other dried up. In terms of inspiration, she found that both disciplines could feed the other. I do wonder sometimes if this is part of an English thing whereas on the other side of the pond versatality is in greater supply.

I find it strange that there is a price tag on the Sally Cinnamon cover? Did he actually go out and buy it? I would have thought he would have had access to as many copies as he wanted? Or maybe he blew it when he through paint all over the Silvertone office?
