As a kid growing up in Manchester during the 80s & 90s the roses were god like to us. Now in my late 40s I still listen to their music and remember how good we had it back then.

The Smiths and the Stone Rose's. Two bands that boggle my mind that they aren't huge in the states. From my understanding, the Smiths are appreciated with the same reverence reserved for the Beatles in England. And for great reason. The songwriting of Morrissey and Marr is some of the best written rock and pop songs ever. It's not easy to be catchy and artistic. The Beatles are huge because their songs are catchy yet totally uncompromised artistically. I can think of two more bands I can fit in that category. Smiths and Stone Roses. You guys in England have "how soon is now" while over here we have "I wanna sex you up". Is it any wonder how we elect a man who casually discusses grabbing women by their genitals as his art of seduction. Not even sure how that is possible. I think he may have been confusing men with woman, but hey that's a different topic for a different video.

Saw the Roses at the Hacienda in Feb 1989. One of the best gigs of my life, and I’ve done thousands. Saw Oasis at the Hacienda 5 years later and the vibe for both gigs was electric.
I bet the Stone Roses was a sell out at the hacienda It was going through some bad times with drugs, the club was closed down a few times It also changed from a music venue to a futuristic disco having DJs nights and parties with Temperance I didn't know Oasis played there as during 93/95 Factory Records & hacienda was bankrupt Richard Branson of virgin wanted to buy it at some point, Creation label was getting more bands and so Oasis fans would of gone to University ? Bigger venue?.
The Stone Roses are huge in the UK, Ian Brown is practically the "Godfather" for 80s/90s British kids... people like to say Liam Gallagher borrowed Lennon's mannerisms and no, it's Ian Brown that really influenced Liam's persona. Timing was not everything for the Stone Roses, though... I love them.

To be honest how many bands over the decades have their 1st album released with so many choices of singles The whole sound and production makes it so powerful It was better than I thought, just like hearing the Smiths or the chameleons first 📀
The Stone Roses are in my top 4 favourite bands ever. Their debut album is one of the all time classics. Second Coming was a very good album but everyone was expecting ‘ the Stone Roses ‘ part 2. That wasn’t going to happen. Love Spreads and Ten Storey Love Song are 2 of the best songs they ever made.

Yeah, it's my favourite album of the two. Great songs and riffs throughout. But they were so pissy at the time, and that probably took away from their marketing effort for the album. I went to their show here in Toronto, and they didn't even play an encore. They hadn't played "Fools Gold" in the main set, so the audience was expecting more. Very downbeat feeling filing out of that concert
I'm from the town in the North of England called Widnes..Its where the famous Stone Roses gig took place ..I was there 16 yrs old ..I've loved this band from the day I heard them and still in my top 5 bands ( English indi scene) ..Love from Liverpool
In 89/90 people truly believed the Roses were going to save music. I was one of them. It's hard to grasp now just how important they were . By the time Second Coming was finally released they were already a nostalgia act. Its a shame but in the end they are a lesson in how the music industry destroys bands , as well as how to piss away your own career. Good first album though.
In the Court of the Crimson King, Appettite for Destruction, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Going for the One, Rust in Peace, Abbey Road, The White Album, Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Number of the Beast, Ritual de lo Habitual, Led Zeppelin IV, Quadrophenia, London Calling. Stone Roses is definitely amazing though.
It's a strong debut album , not the best .There have been so many great debuts in music history . I wouldn't know where to begin . Byrds , Velvet Underground , Burrito Bros , Television , Strokes , Pixies , Joy Division , Wire , the Fall , Pearl Jam , Joni Mitchell, Tame Impala, Pistols , Pil , Hendrix , Led Zep, Patti Smith , Sabbath , Massive attack , the Band , B52'S , CSN , Portishead , Tricky , the list goes on and on.
Legendary songs yes, but they don't belong on the debut. The debut album was PERFECT at 11 songs...11 fantastic songs...starts with I Wanna Be Adored and ends with I Am The Resurrection...this is the only way the album should be played (as I have done almost every week or every month for the past 32 years). Elephant Stone is absolutely fantastic but belongs as the single it was (not tacked on to the perfect 11-song album) as is Fools Gold (the greatest single ever released in my opinion) which belongs not on the album either but left as it was- the moving forward next release AFTER the album, showing the band - only months later- moving into a new direction, on the very, very cusp of the 90s, in November 1989. Sadly what came next was gaps, filler, and an anti-climax. They had one last surge with another non-album single (One Love) before a 4 year inactivity.
@@jogon7914 The very first time I heard the album it was the US edition, having no idea that Elephant Stone and Fool's Gold were not part of the UK edition, and because of that the UK edition feels incomplete to me, so we'll have to disagree on that one.

Living in Manchester was one of the best times of my life, I was living my music dream! Everyday on the bus I would pass by the offices of the old Factory Records and the Hacienda condos. And met Shaun Ryder and Mani and hung out with Badly Dawn Boy. Now I just live back in Canada and live a humdrum life.
Had The Stone Roses not spent five years on _Second Coming,_ Britpop may not have developed in the interim to fill the vacuum. The Roses didn't necessarily "fall" - they were one in a part of a cultural moment & that moment died out, Grunge came in, the Roses were suddenly a step behind the times & there was no new ground for them to go creatively together. John retired happily after The Seahorses, Reni retired happily, Mani made a happy career with Primal Scream, Ian released some great albums, they made a mint on a reunion tour, & the 1st album lives on.
Yeah... for a long time the Stone Roses were known for the band that failed at the "second album curse" but only among the press, since they were huge and suddenly they disappeared. This eventually died down. Their legacy, however, was never tarnished. I think Ian Brown and Paul Weller are practically canonized in the UK at this point lol for good reason.
That moment didn't die out. Like the Beatles they did what they wanted to do and they then wanted to split. They didn't release loads of failing albums. The rise and "fall" title is clickbait. Grunge came in because idiot no talent journalists with no music knowledge wanted to call Nirvana's rock an roll something different like how they wanted to call Stone Roses and Oasis 'indie' music rather than rock and roll. The Stone roses were not suddenly a step behind anything.
I recall one night in NYC when I was at a small club called MISSION when I Wanna Be Adored was played for the first time in NYC. Dave Kendal, the British VJ from 120 Minutes on M-TV, was the DJ in this little club. To my left at the bar was the guitarist from Siouxsie & The Banshees and to my right was the keyboard player in The Psychedelic Furs. There were only around thirty five people in this little room but half of them were musicians in cool bands. I think it was 1989... Good times.
@@yaboyreege7158 MISSION had a tiny dance floor, maybe about 10 or 12 people could be on it at any given time. The musicians who would be at the bar would always be checking it out, especially if one of the songs on which they performed was being played. Some songs always garnered dancers; Cities In Dust (Siouxsie), Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode), and Down In It (Nine Inch Nails), for example. I Wanna Be Adored was exactly the same as all the successful dance songs played there. It was an instant dance hit!
What a bummer. Such a great band. Did get to see them in the mid 90’s after the 2nd coming album. Always enjoy these Brit movement/Manchester band videos.
They had incredible hype upon the release of their first album but they took too long to release a follow up. It’s a shame, because Oasis and Blur picked up where they left off and Stone Roses didn’t capitalize off the Brit-pop craze of the mid 90s.
It's ironic: Noel said that if it wasn't for that Stone Roses' huge gig at the park, Oasis probably wouldn't exist. Liam's persona is 80% Ian Brown. Ian Brown's solo career was huge in the 90s but in UK, Japan... it's not everyone's cup of tea, I like it. I think naturally it would have been Oasis and Blur to kickstart Britpop anyway...
The reason why they didn't do a follow up album was because they signed a really really bad 3 album deal not realising how bad it was they got paid almost nothing so they spent most of there time trying to get out of there first deal

For the second album his coke use affected the way he played: multiple overdubs, bombastic, Jimmy Page type soloing while the bass and drums, which were such a huge part of the first album, were much lower in the mix.
@@ranica47 yes. I thought his playing was kinda sloppy on Second Coming and some of the shows for the album. You can tell its the coke. I much prefer his old style of playing. You knew it was him playing but he just sounds like a Jimmy Page wannabe come the mid 90s. Some sparks of greatness but completely eclipsed by the aforementioned sloppy playing.
Check out the documentary "The Stone Roses: Made of Stone" if you haven't already. I believe it's free on Prime right now. Great doc about the rise and fall of the band and chronicles their 2012 reunion tour. Great band, unfortunately they didn't really take off they way they should have. That first album is truly amazing and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Saw them twice during the reunion, which i thought wouldn't happen. At Wembley, they were playing better than ever. Wished i'd seen them in 89 at their peak. That was the time really.
The Stone Roses were the first UK band to follow the "Britpop hype path": Come out of nowhere, have a couple of good singles, start getting talked about by the "cool" music magazines, release a great debut album, get called The Next Beatles. Suede and Oasis were able to survive that path, at least for a while; The Stone Roses, being the first band to go through it, had no idea how to handle the attention. That first album of theirs is still awesome though, it still holds up today.
They recorded an album in 1985 called garage flower that got scrapped and the self titled lp is classified as the first album, garage flower was unofficially released in 1996 but the second coming is a great record that doesn't deserve the flak
Got a new sub cos of this video. As you can see from my avatar the stone roses are insanley important to me (that's their logo on my Fender Telecaster) and i have that same logo as a tattoo on my forearm. I heard Waterfall, decided i wanted to play that on guitar, and bought a guitar, and learned it - then learned the entire album, by myself with no teaching. I am a big fan. And this is a lovely video, some lovely work here.
The second coming was epic, it was ridiculous it got panned and most music Fans love it that’s what counts not what Critics say but unfortunately they can have an influence, both the Roses albums have iconic songs on.....
The Stone Roses changed everything. They put everything into colour. They changed music transformed it into a new era. Their debut album is imo the best debut album of all time, it's certainly my all time fave. A truly unbelievable band that had that mysteriousness about them that's indescribable
Not a patch on the House Of Love. ;-) Spacemen 3 are the band from that era who I always thought should have been more successful. Mad combination of drone rock, electronica, swamp blues, psychedelia etc. The Roses were pedestrian as f by comparison, but had the better look...

That band literally changed my life and the fact i got to see them before they split at the Glasgow green gig and then again for there final ever gig after they reformed at Hampden Park with Primal Scream supporting will live with me forever. They might not have been big in the states but that didn't matter at all. They will always be the best band ever to me.
The Stone Roses did 2 great albums to be fair, it’s just that only one of them was released as an album. But if you take their singles and b sides (many if which could be singles in their own right) from before and shortly after their debut album, you could have another great album. Good video though, but should have mentioned Fools Gold, which was a massive change in direction.
One of my stepdad’s mate met the Stone Roses and helped them make their 2nd album ‘Second coming’ at Rockfield Studios. He said they were the band that spent the longest time at the studios, in the nearly 2 years they spent there, they would write a song every few weeks-ish. They left in ‘95 and oasis immediately went into the studio to record their 2nd album, What’s the story (morning glory)?

I was in a store In the mall in 94' in San Francisco nd it took me 10yrs to accidentally watching top of the chart re-run nd had that album on replay for at least 10yrs , along with "yo la Tengo" , nd my new fave band is "real estate". Best indie band to go on long drives into the country side.

I agree. Sure Squire's guitar work blatantly channels Zeppelin, but I feel his riffs have a lot of character to them like Page and unlike a lot of the Zep imitators like Kingdom Come per say. Reni's drum work is incredible and Mani really shines with excellent bass playing on every track. Brown is a weak link unfortunately because his voice is too thin to match the intensity of most of the songs
I cant believe that the Stone roses aren't bigger here in the states than they are. Their music is pretty universal in its appeal. Whether you like pop, punk, electronica or just well written rock music. Some of their stuff even reminds me of jam band music. The song I think called adore or adore me, should be the theme song for disaffected youths everywhere. Its dark and melodic and beautiful. Their songs have catchy hooks but also extended instrumental parts, danceable beats and cool lyrics. They could really appeal to lots of different music fans.
Great video (seeing it from an American perspective for a change) but Reni joined in 1984, not 85, and he was at that legendary first London gig the Roses played and Pete Townshend was so blown away by Reni that he wanted him to be his drummer, but Reni (although he could have got instant commercial exposure being the drummer for legendary Who founder Townshend) wouldn't ditch Ian, John, etc) . Also you failed to mention Andy Couzens was also in the band early on and actually founded the band with John and Ian). Andy was edged out of the band by early manager Gareth and went on to form the often forgotten but brilliant band The High, The story of The Roses has more background than you mention here; Ian and John and Andy started the band, John persuaded a reluctant Pete Garner - who was friend to all 3 of them - to join and Simon Wolstencroft -who was also their friend almost joined (as he had almost joined The Smiths with his other friend Johnny Marr). The original band before they settled on The Stone Roses was The Waterfront but Wolstencroft didn't stick around and Reni joined early on, Eventually Pete left (and old friend Mani stepped in) and Andy was edged out...leaving the now legendary line-up of Ian, John, Mani & Reni.
I was too young for them in their (very brief) prime, but they remain one of my favourite bands of all time, and I saw them twice after they reformed. Their show at Heaton Park in Manchester 2012 remains my all time favourite live performance that I've seen by a band. It wasn't just a gig, it felt like an event. You should do a video on The Libertines, another big name over here who never broke America. Their story is fascinating, and very similar to the Roses. Released a long awaited seminal debut album, very briefly appeared to have the world at their feet but by the time their second album was released, the band had all but disintegrated due to drugs and infighting, but in their wake lay a huge legacy.

Second Coming is a very underrated album, it should have been massive, but the zeitgeist for Zeppelin inspired rock music wasn't there in 1994.

Yeah, it's my favourite album of the two. Great songs and riffs throughout. But they were so pissy at the time, and that probably took away from their marketing effort for the album. I went to their show here in Toronto, and they didn't even play an encore. They hadn't played "Fools Gold" in the main set, so the audience was expecting more. Very downbeat feeling filing out of that concert

I'm from the town in the North of England called Widnes..Its where the famous Stone Roses gig took place ..I was there 16 yrs old ..I've loved this band from the day I heard them and still in my top 5 bands ( English indi scene) ..Love from Liverpool
In 89/90 people truly believed the Roses were going to save music. I was one of them. It's hard to grasp now just how important they were . By the time Second Coming was finally released they were already a nostalgia act. Its a shame but in the end they are a lesson in how the music industry destroys bands , as well as how to piss away your own career. Good first album though.

It's a strong debut album , not the best .There have been so many great debuts in music history . I wouldn't know where to begin . Byrds , Velvet Underground , Burrito Bros , Television , Strokes , Pixies , Joy Division , Wire , the Fall , Pearl Jam , Joni Mitchell, Tame Impala, Pistols , Pil , Hendrix , Led Zep, Patti Smith , Sabbath , Massive attack , the Band , B52'S , CSN , Portishead , Tricky , the list goes on and on.

The US edition of their debut album is the one to get. It features two additional songs, Elephant Stone and Fool's Gold.
Legendary songs yes, but they don't belong on the debut. The debut album was PERFECT at 11 songs...11 fantastic songs...starts with I Wanna Be Adored and ends with I Am The Resurrection...this is the only way the album should be played (as I have done almost every week or every month for the past 32 years).
Elephant Stone is absolutely fantastic but belongs as the single it was (not tacked on to the perfect 11-song album) as is Fools Gold (the greatest single ever released in my opinion) which belongs not on the album either but left as it was- the moving forward next release AFTER the album, showing the band - only months later- moving into a new direction, on the very, very cusp of the 90s, in November 1989.
Sadly what came next was gaps, filler, and an anti-climax. They had one last surge with another non-album single (One Love) before a 4 year inactivity.
@@jogon7914 The very first time I heard the album it was the US edition, having no idea that Elephant Stone and Fool's Gold were not part of the UK edition, and because of that the UK edition feels incomplete to me, so we'll have to disagree on that one.

No. Elephant Stone and Fool's Gold both are superb tracks. But they destroy the flow of the debut. You have to hear them what they are: as singles!

Living in Manchester was one of the best times of my life, I was living my music dream! Everyday on the bus I would pass by the offices of the old Factory Records and the Hacienda condos. And met Shaun Ryder and Mani and hung out with Badly Dawn Boy. Now I just live back in Canada and live a humdrum life.

Had The Stone Roses not spent five years on _Second Coming,_ Britpop may not have developed in the interim to fill the vacuum.
The Roses didn't necessarily "fall" - they were one in a part of a cultural moment & that moment died out, Grunge came in, the Roses were suddenly a step behind the times & there was no new ground for them to go creatively together.
John retired happily after The Seahorses, Reni retired happily, Mani made a happy career with Primal Scream, Ian released some great albums, they made a mint on a reunion tour, & the 1st album lives on.
Yeah... for a long time the Stone Roses were known for the band that failed at the "second album curse" but only among the press, since they were huge and suddenly they disappeared. This eventually died down.
Their legacy, however, was never tarnished. I think Ian Brown and Paul Weller are practically canonized in the UK at this point lol for good reason.

That moment didn't die out. Like the Beatles they did what they wanted to do and they then wanted to split. They didn't release loads of failing albums. The rise and "fall" title is clickbait. Grunge came in because idiot no talent journalists with no music knowledge wanted to call Nirvana's rock an roll something different like how they wanted to call Stone Roses and Oasis 'indie' music rather than rock and roll. The Stone roses were not suddenly a step behind anything.
I recall one night in NYC when I was at a small club called MISSION when I Wanna Be Adored was played for the first time in NYC. Dave Kendal, the British VJ from 120 Minutes on M-TV, was the DJ in this little club.
To my left at the bar was the guitarist from Siouxsie & The Banshees and to my right was the keyboard player in The Psychedelic Furs. There were only around thirty five people in this little room but half of them were musicians in cool bands.
I think it was 1989... Good times.

@@yaboyreege7158 MISSION had a tiny dance floor, maybe about 10 or 12 people could be on it at any given time. The musicians who would be at the bar would always be checking it out, especially if one of the songs on which they performed was being played.
Some songs always garnered dancers; Cities In Dust (Siouxsie), Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode), and Down In It (Nine Inch Nails), for example.
I Wanna Be Adored was exactly the same as all the successful dance songs played there. It was an instant dance hit!

What a bummer. Such a great band. Did get to see them in the mid 90’s after the 2nd coming album. Always enjoy these Brit movement/Manchester band videos.
They had incredible hype upon the release of their first album but they took too long to release a follow up. It’s a shame, because Oasis and Blur picked up where they left off and Stone Roses didn’t capitalize off the Brit-pop craze of the mid 90s.
It's ironic: Noel said that if it wasn't for that Stone Roses' huge gig at the park, Oasis probably wouldn't exist. Liam's persona is 80% Ian Brown.
Ian Brown's solo career was huge in the 90s but in UK, Japan... it's not everyone's cup of tea, I like it. I think naturally it would have been Oasis and Blur to kickstart Britpop anyway...

The reason why they didn't do a follow up album was because they signed a really really bad 3 album deal not realising how bad it was they got paid almost nothing so they spent most of there time trying to get out of there first deal

As much as i like his style, especially his earlier playing, i think hes overrated.
For the second album his coke use affected the way he played: multiple overdubs, bombastic, Jimmy Page type soloing while the bass and drums, which were such a huge part of the first album, were much lower in the mix.
@@ranica47 yes. I thought his playing was kinda sloppy on Second Coming and some of the shows for the album. You can tell its the coke. I much prefer his old style of playing. You knew it was him playing but he just sounds like a Jimmy Page wannabe come the mid 90s. Some sparks of greatness but completely eclipsed by the aforementioned sloppy playing.

Check out the documentary "The Stone Roses: Made of Stone" if you haven't already. I believe it's free on Prime right now. Great doc about the rise and fall of the band and chronicles their 2012 reunion tour. Great band, unfortunately they didn't really take off they way they should have. That first album is truly amazing and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Spike Island was the biggest gig but the best gig was the Glasgow Green one in June 1990. Blackpool as well.
Saw them twice during the reunion, which i thought wouldn't happen.
At Wembley, they were playing better than ever. Wished i'd seen them in 89 at their peak. That was the time really.
The Stone Roses were the first UK band to follow the "Britpop hype path": Come out of nowhere, have a couple of good singles, start getting talked about by the "cool" music magazines, release a great debut album, get called The Next Beatles. Suede and Oasis were able to survive that path, at least for a while; The Stone Roses, being the first band to go through it, had no idea how to handle the attention. That first album of theirs is still awesome though, it still holds up today.

They recorded an album in 1985 called garage flower that got scrapped and the self titled lp is classified as the first album, garage flower was unofficially released in 1996 but the second coming is a great record that doesn't deserve the flak
Got a new sub cos of this video. As you can see from my avatar the stone roses are insanley important to me (that's their logo on my Fender Telecaster) and i have that same logo as a tattoo on my forearm. I heard Waterfall, decided i wanted to play that on guitar, and bought a guitar, and learned it - then learned the entire album, by myself with no teaching. I am a big fan. And this is a lovely video, some lovely work here.
Second Coming is such an underrated album. I never understood all the flak it got.

Spacemen 3 are the band from that era who I always thought should have been more successful. Mad combination of drone rock, electronica, swamp blues, psychedelia etc. The Roses were pedestrian as f by comparison, but had the better look...

That band literally changed my life and the fact i got to see them before they split at the Glasgow green gig and then again for there final ever gig after they reformed at Hampden Park with Primal Scream supporting will live with me forever. They might not have been big in the states but that didn't matter at all. They will always be the best band ever to me.
Never knew they'd completely jacked it in. Gutted. Hoped there'd be another album at some point. Loved 2nd coming, personally.
A lot of great bands that never make it big are either too ahead of their time or peak too early. The Stone Roses were both.
The Stone Roses did 2 great albums to be fair, it’s just that only one of them was released as an album. But if you take their singles and b sides (many if which could be singles in their own right) from before and shortly after their debut album, you could have another great album. Good video though, but should have mentioned Fools Gold, which was a massive change in direction.

One of my stepdad’s mate met the Stone Roses and helped them make their 2nd album ‘Second coming’ at Rockfield Studios. He said they were the band that spent the longest time at the studios, in the nearly 2 years they spent there, they would write a song every few weeks-ish. They left in ‘95 and oasis immediately went into the studio to record their 2nd album, What’s the story (morning glory)?
They are a great band. Very talented. Fantastic songs.
I remember when I heard , "I wanna be adored". I was in a store In the mall in 94' in San Francisco nd it took me 10yrs to accidentally watching top of the chart re-run nd had that album on replay for at least 10yrs , along with "yo la Tengo" , nd my new fave band is "real estate". Best indie band to go on long drives into the country side.
Still made the best debut album of all time though.
Loved being in manc during Madchester, was lucky to see em at spike and Blackpool.

The difference in sound-style-“feel “….. between 1st album and Second Coming is remarkable.
Like- I ( and my group of friends/people) would pretty much never listen to the first album , but Second Coming is an all time favorite - love the arrangements/musicianship in there! 😯🤔🙂

I agree. Sure Squire's guitar work blatantly channels Zeppelin, but I feel his riffs have a lot of character to them like Page and unlike a lot of the Zep imitators like Kingdom Come per say. Reni's drum work is incredible and Mani really shines with excellent bass playing on every track. Brown is a weak link unfortunately because his voice is too thin to match the intensity of most of the songs

I cant believe that the Stone roses aren't bigger here in the states than they are. Their music is pretty universal in its appeal. Whether you like pop, punk, electronica or just well written rock music. Some of their stuff even reminds me of jam band music. The song I think called adore or adore me, should be the theme song for disaffected youths everywhere. Its dark and melodic and beautiful. Their songs have catchy hooks but also extended instrumental parts, danceable beats and cool lyrics. They could really appeal to lots of different music fans.
As far as I’m concerned, the Stone Roses are still rising

Great video (seeing it from an American perspective for a change) but Reni joined in 1984, not 85, and he was at that legendary first London gig the Roses played and Pete Townshend was so blown away by Reni that he wanted him to be his drummer, but Reni (although he could have got instant commercial exposure being the drummer for legendary Who founder Townshend) wouldn't ditch Ian, John, etc) .
Also you failed to mention Andy Couzens was also in the band early on and actually founded the band with John and Ian). Andy was edged out of the band by early manager Gareth and went on to form the often forgotten but brilliant band The High,
The story of The Roses has more background than you mention here; Ian and John and Andy started the band, John persuaded a reluctant Pete Garner - who was friend to all 3 of them - to join and Simon Wolstencroft -who was also their friend almost joined (as he had almost joined The Smiths with his other friend Johnny Marr).
The original band before they settled on The Stone Roses was The Waterfront but Wolstencroft didn't stick around and Reni joined early on, Eventually Pete left (and old friend Mani stepped in) and Andy was edged out...leaving the now legendary line-up of Ian, John, Mani & Reni.
I was too young for them in their (very brief) prime, but they remain one of my favourite bands of all time, and I saw them twice after they reformed. Their show at Heaton Park in Manchester 2012 remains my all time favourite live performance that I've seen by a band. It wasn't just a gig, it felt like an event.
You should do a video on The Libertines, another big name over here who never broke America. Their story is fascinating, and very similar to the Roses. Released a long awaited seminal debut album, very briefly appeared to have the world at their feet but by the time their second album was released, the band had all but disintegrated due to drugs and infighting, but in their wake lay a huge legacy.
