I know there's no such thing as the best guitarist in the world, but Guthrie Govan is the best guitarist in the world.
I had to scroll too far to find this :P
Alan Angel he's definitely one of them
Sadly, Jimi's no longer with us.
On the other hand, one could argue that Jimi showed us the way, and people like GG took that and ran with it :)
The Dude Shreds My argument would be that GG could imitate Hendrix perfectly but not vice versa.
This. People always prattle on about all these various guitarists being the "greatest" simply 'cause they're household names, when guys like Guthrie can play circles around them with their eyes closed. Yeah, guys like Guthrie were no doubt inspired by all those household names, but that doesn't change the fact they've all been surpassed ages ago.
when you rearrange the letters in Guthrie Govan, you get "Guitar Jesus."
You might have to change some letters, too, but you can make it happen if you really believe.
John Van Swearingen I keep getting Guitar Gohev but I'll keep trying man
I keep getting "Guthrie Govan"
I think I'm doing it wrong
I got 'Obi-Van Genuthrie'. Close enough
You can get Guitar Govenor, well... nearly.
Guitar Govneh
Jesus Christ ...Jesus Christ!
Guthrie is that boy in school, who says he didn't prepare for the test and gets the best marks. LOL
Good one! I'd say that he did prepare, but by reading all the time by his own decision and his own enjoyment.
Yes!
That was me
Probably actually fits him; he’s really smart and went to Univ of Oxford
@Ed That's actually how Guthrie writes music. He said he can visualize all the notes in his head without playing them. He writes songs in his head. Not even kidding.
even when he blinks his eyes, I hear triplet legatos in minor 3rds
Nailed it
omgggggggg lolllllllll
dude, you made me laugh hard
I don't understand what that means but it sounds good.
Cheers!
Haha bang on
Guthrie looks like the kind of guy who makes swords.
Steve Gould I don't know what that means... but I totally agree!
Steve Gould You're absolutely correct
You look like the kind of guy who wears wellies and spends most of the day on a tractor
Nah, definitely an axe-man ;D
Steve Gould ...and then sells them so he can play more guitar lol Hes so good!
Guthrie rocks, but I want to give a big thank you to Lee, the way he interviews is just so real and refreshing to see. The questions are from heart and totally not forced. I have the attention span of a 5 year old so I can't watch videos longer than 5 minutes, but here I am 1 hour and 5 minutes into this one. These interviews captivates(no pun) me. Thank you!
Ola Englund Now would be a good time to plug your "Captain Meets" video! ;D
Ola Englund loved your interview with him too dude!
Cheers Ola - thats very kind of you. We must catch up again next year - your guitar career is going off the scale!! Congrats for everything - you've worked very hard for it - you deserve it!
vyvhhlvuvu
Yeah, I initially groaned a little at the 81m length but Lee did a great interview and Guthrie is easy to listen to so it was time well spent. Plus the amazing musical interludes!
whether he's playing or just talking, Guthrie is a joy.
He seems like he would be awesome to have a beer with. Seems chill af
There's probably no difference between them for GG tho…
He's a laid-down bloke, all set to everything
The aliens are getting better at teaching us music.
We didn't understand Allan Holdsworth when they sent him, but this second prototype is much more relatable.
They messes up with Shawn Lane. We're still trying to figure that one out.
@@andrewkramer4021 Shawn Lane makes more sense to me than Holdsworth. He is just from some upside down world where he discovered the key of H and plays the mixogobbledegook scale for the mortals that came to see him
🤣
Yessss finally .. Always thought allan holdsworth, shawn lane and guthrie were 3 one of a kind virtuosos resembling each other in certain way .. Allan paved the way shawn lane adopted it and finally guthrie took over the helm... Good to know i always thought i was the only one😁
Made my day. 😅

He writes theory books. Fairly close

Hats off to a real ARTIST and not a career chaser.
Agreed, i suppose thats why hes such a beast. His heart and passion are in the right place. Pure and true, no hidden agenda.
@@mrmaldoon8362 at the same time having a lot of money isn't a bad thing to look for in itself
Hmmmm. A little bit of material avarice on his part might have given the World another EVH style household name virtuoso. Instead we have a few YT videos and a smattering of sessions spread across a handful of virtually unknown albums by a very narrow selection of obscure (to the general public) artists.
For someone of Guthrie's incredible abilities, we have remarkably few great albums.
He might be the ''Guitarist's Guitarist'', but that's like being a mailman who only delivers mail to other mailmen.

the captain is a good interviewer, I think andertons tv should be on TV.
Its always strange watching Guthrie on the internet. He was my teacher for 3 years and he literally changed the course of my life. I was going to go to one Uni and after seeing him at the basement followed him to another city, and changed my course just so I could be taught by him. Its weird to think without the desire to be taught by this guy I would not have the family I do, the friends I have, or be in the bands I'm in. He is a true legend, a lovely guy, and truly the greatest guitarist I have ever seen!
Nice testament to the man.
49:28 made me chuckle - plays this seemingly unconscious, note-perfect flurry of notes while listening to the Captain's question
Guthrie always sounds like he’s speaking directly to whoever’s listening, regardless of his current audience. It feels like he’s speaking directly to me in a language I can understand.

I got to hang out with Guthrie last week at the Petrucci camp. What a fantastic guy! He is music personified. He's an amazing teacher as well, and the way he communicates his ideas and concepts is just one of a kind. He had this impromptu 2am jam with a french horn player in the hotel lobby that just made my year. Such a beautiful moment. You could really tell that playing music makes him happy, and he in turn makes everyone around him happy. Such an inspiration.
Did anyone record it
@@harveygodspeed1769 i was there and it was a while back but the way i remember it was that there were only about ten of us and over the course of maybe a half hour some more people gathered to watch, but there was a sort of unspoken understanding between everybody that we were just going to sit there in quiet reverence and enjoy the moment
He crammed everything in that jam, he wanted to play. happy.

I wouldn't say he's the best guitarist in the world. But he's in the top 1
You had me at, “…almost religious ceremony where they put the circle of petroleum byproducts on the turntable..”
Most amazing player and conversationalist. Now his guitar phrasing makes more sense with thoughts like that. It just comes out of his fingers. True artist.
Its rare to hear a guitarist play that fast and still sound tasteful
As Paul Gilbert said 'Guthrie gives shred a good name'.
In rock perhaps yes, it is becoming increasingly more and more rare as hordes of new players that can't really play yet have "mastered" a technique or two and feel the need to put it on full display because in reality it's all they got. It's sad. However in classical and jazz it's rarely if ever even spoken about because it's rarely if ever an issue. People have been playing fast melodic lines for centuries, it's about time the rock community catches up! Rock on Guthrie!
Marty Friedman, Wes Hauch. Joe Satriani, Marco Sfogli, John Petrucci, Claudio Pietronik, Jason Becker... even Jeff Loomis or Andy James would have something to say about that! I think rock has a ton of melodic shredders, and a lot of fretboard wankers too...
Pat Metheny ? no?
MrGuitarMadness95 depends on what you define as "tasteful". I can't get into Yngwie, Satch or the like, but I like Guthrie and Paul Gilbert.
I love every time Guthrie gets a compliment for his guitar playing he always shakes his arms and is like "who me?"
This has got to be my 10-15th time watching this interview ever since it came out. It’s always hypnotizing!
Same here... I don't know how many times... But as far as I can remember, it's probably been 2-3 years, I watch this when I'm having a meal for 15-20 minutes, at least once or twice every week.
we need new episode with Guthrie!!! :)
Not gonna lie, seeing this video pop up between my subscriptions made me moist.
MrAnon78 they went out with out an umbrella
He's mouthing his guitar licks. The music is IN him.......
Shawn Lane had a similar way of doing it. You can tell both men had/have the same thing in them.
Singing your licks is a great way to find new licks and improve your phrasing. I don't always remember to do it, but it definitely makes my guitar tell better stories when I do. Another good example is George Benson, he sang every single notes in the mic as he was soloing. what a legend.
A lot of jazz musicians do that to various degrees.
From what I’ve seen,Guthrie is such a humble man,he’s extremely blessed with natural talent yet stays grounded.this is rare.
I think most of British rock musicians are down to earth

Seeing that again after many years, it's so obvious how spoiled the captain is. He has Guthrie in front of him and he always talks about himself like somebody cares. "I", "me", "when I was a kid" etc
Think that's just his way of phrasing some really interesting questions -relating them to his own experiences. I genuinely think he's not egotistical.
Guthrie is that once in several generations guitarist that transcends everything. He's above, he's beyond..and all we mere mortals can do is sit back, enjoy, learn and embrace the awe. Humble in the face of his greatness, majestic in spite of his humility. Just glad to be alive to experience his genius
he is even shredding with his eyebrows. what a god

There are many gifted guitar players out there, some popular some relatively unknown but three who stand out in my mind, whose skills baffle me, leave me in awe. They are Alan Holdsworth rip, Shawn Lane rip and Guthrie Govan.
he wrote waves at 19 . oh god what am I even doing with a guitar
My thoughts... :D
Sameer Anwar Your enjoying yourself man with the gift God gave you. Don't let these monster players intimidate you .. I did when I was a young player and it screwed me up, use to go to NAMM shows and was intimidated to the point of wanting to just quit every year after the show. Pickup what you can from these guys, but most importantly work on developing your own style whilst enjoying the journey.
I want to remind you that, incredible though GG is, almost every amazing player in the world can't do what he does. Gilmour, May, Knopfler, Clapton, Page, Young, Bonamassa . . . and then moving into the specifically technical players there's Vai, Malmsteen, Batio, Johnson perhaps . . . you don't _need_ to be able to do what GG does to absolutely kick ass.
Don't compare your ability to one of the best guitarists on the earth, 99% of us aren't incredible like guthrie, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have fun and play
Jason Becker has the Perpetual Burn album out by the time he was 19... people that can do that kind of stuff make make jealous
Looks like Jesus, plays like God.
God wishes he could play like Guthrie.
Ha, good one! I should have seen that coming.
God Quit playing after seeing this video.
Hugo Diaz whaaa
Yeah, because religious people never talk shit...
I thought Guthrie was great until I heard him play on "The Raven That Refused To Sing." Then I KNEW he was great. My favorite playing by him isn't when he's ripping massively fast leads, but rather the slower stuff where his playing is just dripping with feel. Such a great player.
That harmonica lick at 7:30 is ridiculous! I will steal that.
PLEASE Lee, is there a way to have a biweekly or monthly segment with Guthrie? Perhaps a Victory or Charvel sponsored segment, to bring GG to the Anderton's TV family. Visit him at gigs if need be. He's a credit to the human race and deserves an outlet to share his philosophy on music and life in general. You could call it, "The World According To Guthrie." If anyone can do it, you can.
Tom Hammerton true, but he'd reach a much larger audience via a popular UA-cam channel😉.
welcome to GGTV the new channel broadcasting only Lord govans whims ... id pay for that
Reach a much larger audience? Than playing with The Aristocrats, former Steven Wilson guitarist, and now working with Hanz friggin Zimmer? Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's not gonna starve if he isn't featured on a UA-cam channel with a slightly above average viewer base every now and then.
intrsoul I think John Irving might take umbridge at that title!
All good points, but I think he could strike a balance between constant touring and taking the time to share his wisdom with the world via UA-cam, as long as it's lucrative. Granted, there is no rush like performing for thousands of people (I've had that chance on occasion) but I would wager that his videos reach more folks in more countries than any tour could (look at the Views for this video!) Consider his age as well - he has a lot of touring years left but it doesn't hurt for him to star thinking about his 50's and 60's. YT is much easier on the muscles and joints than touring:)
Can we please get Guthrie on That Pedal Show? That would be awesome!
Guthrie on a gut-wrenchingly inferior show to AndertonsTV? I'll pass.
I enjoy both and feel no need to judge one superior and the other inferior.
John Marquez I agree and think that's the beauty of UA-cam. There's no competition. It's not 2 channels fighting for a time slot. Everyone can watch anything anytime they want. And since there's no competition, channels are free to support and recommend each other :)
TPS is run by some of the same people and goes into more depth about gear than Andertons does. I come here for insanely good music-making, TPS for technical information. They complement each other beautifully.
John Marquez I would rather see that pedal on The Guthrie show.
This intro jam NEVER gets boring,NEVER,I come back quite often for this little ripper,GG is up there with the very very very very best FACT!
Guitarist 2019: I need 8 strings.

The term "guitar god" tends to get thrown around very loosely these days, however, I think Guthrie is genuinely a musical god, a guitar genius. He literally can adapt to any style of playing, at any speed. Not only does he adapt, but he excels and dominates any of those styles. I particularly love when he transitions from jazzy licks, to a tasty blues lick :). So glad musicians like him exist. Gives me so much inspiration to keep practicing.
Lungsy1988 so true man
He can adapts to Derek Trucks style or Quinn Sullivan.
Personally I don't think he's one of the greats, he's too caught up in the twiddly twiddly type of thing, a desire to impress with playing fast, which let's be honest, by the beginning of the nineties had run its course, everybody and their dog had covered this ground already.

Guthrie is a totally complete man when he's got the guitar in his hand. That way he communicates his heart so flawlessly, like an excited child...like a teacher, like a maestro...and an absolute master of the game. It;s ALWAYS a pleasure watching him speak as much as play. Everything he says holds much value and the way his eyes lighten up during some phrases makes you realise that it all comes from the heart. Guthrie is universal and one of a kind. Cheers n God bless!!!!!
Guthrie plays just like he speaks. Very intelligent, articulate, funny and always comes out with something unexpected
Absolutely spot on
It's not even so much that clearly he is one of the best guitar players on earth, but just the sheer intelligence of the man is overwhelming. It's like listening to a Cambridge/Oxford professor talk, you can tell he's much more than just a guitar player. Incredible.

I score between 138-140 and would say probably higher if it matters. Feynman was a genius and famously had an IQ of 125. Its always less about what you have and more about what you do with it. Guthrie has something I and most people don't have (at least at this level), creativity and genius.

I think there are categories where guitarists are some of the best at. Steve Vai is great at finding new and unique ways to use his guitar for different sounds (Best example is Erotic Nightmares), Randy Rhoads was a MASTER at composing music, Jason Becker was the best at shredding, especially for his age.
Guthrie Govan is a master of all categories. Guthrie isn't my favorite guitarist, isn't my top 10 in my favorites, but I consider him to be THE BEST at the guitar.
His fluidity at phrasing some of the most unique and difficult licks shows how great he is at his mechanical ability. His knowledge for the guitar and for theory is astonishing. It seems like when he hears something that he wants to play on the guitar, even if it doesn't exist, he'll convert that thought into a note or a series of notes.
Every solo he does sounds like it was written, but that's just how much control he has on his guitar that he's able to improvise stuff that sound like it was written.
So basically, GG is the BEST guitarist in the world.
I saw Guthrie Govan in Bangkok, laying down on the sofa of the lobby theater at a John McLaughlin concert. We walked up to him, he talked to us, real nice approachable guy.
Guthries language is so refined. He's got all the cliche licks and phrases from every genre imaginable thoroughly nailed down and integrates them flawlessly and tastefully with his own vocabulary.
The Captain meets God.
* Jeezus
Capton is God,
Guthrie is Jesus.
Oh! Lord I can only gaze with awe. The way he phrased that solo in the beginning just out of thin air is just incredible! This man is the most technically sound and accomplished guitarist of all time (IMO). The amount of knowledge he has and the way he interprets with such articulation is such a bliss. He is so very talented and a master of the instrument that he holds and yet he is insanely humble. The way he explains with such class and distinction is truly praiseworthy. The amount of respect that I hold towards him as a musician is something which cannot be measured. He is a living legend!
i keep coming back to it, so good.
Guitar Jesus.
That's the thing about Guthry Govan. You can listen to him play for half the day and listen to him talk the rest. Definitely the thinking man's guitar player!
I'm on a bit of a Guthrie binge at the moment, and thought I'd revisit this interview. I've watched a lot of Lee's "Captain Meets" videos, but I'm not sure I've ever seen him be so insightful or intelligent in terms of the questions and gentle prompts. He's always been a good interviewer, but this is next-level for him. I wonder if meeting Guthrie brought it out of him, and maybe sitting so close to such a wonderful human as GG would have the same effect on any of us.
Cheers Niq!
It's interesting how his speaking patterns and vocabulary is so... "similar" to how he plays guitar. Very eloquent, intelligent, and very much screams GUTHRIE with every sound.
The amount of "yeah" in this whole video is about over 9000
Way too much by The Captain. I think he needs to be mostly quiet when his interviewee is talking; showing affirmation in more subtle ways, like nodding his head and smiling.
....you know.....
Good point - yeah!
Yeah
the interviewer is on edge the whole time, cant relax at all, probably smoked weed beforehand??
42:07 Lee: "WTF just happened?" 😂🙌🏻 Same!
The opening Jam of this will forever be my favourite piece of guitar playing on UA-cam
Every guitarist who's had a much a better guitarist to borrow and play their guitar knows the "I didn't know it could sound like that" feeling that Lee is experiencing at around 42:09
Karl-Anthony Towns I think you don't know your gear can sound like that because it takes another's fingers. Lee can sound great, but it's not the same because yeah, sometimes a portion (about 10-20%) of your tone is in the fingers.
@@lmcf_gtr you're absolutely right. There are certain things that only years of playing can teach you. Thats one of them. The power to play the exact same notes as someone else in a COMPLETELY different way is right in your fingers.
"don't worry I ain't hurtin' yer momma"
I got the impression Lee was thinking the opposite? as guthrie wasn't playing anything particularly inspiring given the quality of guitar he had at his disposal, in the right hands those gibsons sing.
Guthrie playing that Les Paul was awesome, sounds so natural.
At what point did Guthrie play a Les Paul?
billhillard 40:18
I loved the tonal variations he got out of it. It had this thickness to it that the Charvel just didn't have and it sounded awesome.
I forget exactly what it's called but there's a channel on youtube with a bunch of videos of Guthrie playing to some backing tracks and he uses a bunch of different guitars than his sig like a Les Paul, 335, and maybe a strat if I remember correctly.
Julian Rose jamtrackcentral
Guthrie is such a good human being.
Wow... Im a musician who grew up in England in the 70s too! Reaaly rang true - all the stuff the guys said.... brill interviewer and interviewee! Thanks!
his personality shines through his playing and i love that shit!!!
My early career followed such a similar trajectory it actually freaks me out a bit. The only differences are my first performance I was 6, not 5, and I got offered a place at Oxford to do English Literature, but took a "year out" to go to the Guitar Institute (all the while knowing I didn't want a year out, I wanted a lifetime out.)
I totally agree about technique and theory as well: You can't know too much, or too little. If you have knowledge and skill, but can't express yourself emotionally, that's not *because* you have knowledge and skill. They're totally separate things.
Great interview. :)
Hey Jon your song passionflower is amazing!!! 👌👌👌
@K Amburgey yeah that's why he judged with Mike Dawes and Tommy Emmanuel for acoustic guitarist of the year in 2018
@K Amburgey What the hell is this comment? Jon Gomm is amazing. Who are you?
Kj Amburgey If you think people will know about you because you leave lame, snarky comments on UA-cam then you are in for a world of disappointment.
You're both amazing. Different but both inspiring.
Clearly one of the all time giant masters. Got to give the Captain credit for such great interview questions and conversation.
one of my most favorite videos , thanks so very much...
Completely justified and understandable, but I couldn't help noticing Captain's face as Guthrie was playing his Les Paul. I swear I could hear Captain thinking "Wow. I had no idea that guitar could do that!"
With all due respect to The Captain of course! :)
Brilliant work from Cap on the interview as well - respectful and suitably in awe of Guthrie's prowess without being gushy.
Govan is indeed the real deal...
I would probably feel the same even if Govan picked up a 70$ guitar and played it to be honest. :D
Haha! That's great! "Govanned!" How about a slight alteration? "Govan'd"? :)
@Renato: Indeed, so true. Guthrie is for sure one of those players where the magic truly is in his hands [and his head]. The gear he uses pretty much doesn't matter at all :)
I've only watched 39 seconds and I already know I'm going to be watching this video everyday for next 2 years
Wow. Thanks for posting. I enjoyed this intensely
What a fantastic interview!
I dig that you two gents are trying to be as polite as possible to all your young viewers.. but seriously, it's absolutely correct that modern marketing and hyperactive culture is losing something very important. The attention span thing seems to be more and more kids are having to constantly distract themselves from daily living, from their relationships with others, from questioning their own reality.. basically. The 'religious experience' Guthrie talks of when listening to great music as a child is part of this self investigation, wondering what everything's all really about - I had exactly the same experience and still do when I listen to great music or observe any great art forms. Music is more and more being cut up into easy to market bitesize chunks, even bands are mostly trying to write in order to be commercial.. great bands used to just purely try to express themselves and fight with studios to get it out there - Queen spent ages fighting to stop Bohemian Rhapsody being cut down into some radio trash and so on.
It IS detrimental to people's total and potential experience but also quiet, contemplative revelation while experiencing music. The more the brain gets force fed little commercial nibbles the more conditioned it becomes to crave that and so becomes more and more shallow-minded. Yes, the commercial drive behind the music industry has always been there, but it's bloated out of all proportion over the decades and now the industry controls the music.. the music used to direct the industry.
A lot of people don't even like to discuss this sort of thing - in any field of modern life - because they've never experienced this sort of 'religious experience' or whatever you want to call it, with music or film or anything - all they know is basic frivolity, pleasure seeking, repetition, catch-phrase culture and cheap distraction in pleasure etc. Anything more, because they have no experience or understanding of anything more, they automatically shove into a corner called 'pretentious' or something. Pretentious music is music written with a pretense of being great when it isn't. If it IS great, emotive, complex art that delivers and has the skill to back it up then it's not pretentious, it just is something that requires more quietude, maturity, attention and passion to listen to and appreciate. When you're a child you haven't been conditioned so much into any narrow-mindedness and you're naturally much more open to give your full attention to things.. unless you're being fed diets of sugar and so on.
Two things that come to mind, is that Guthrie didn't get the opportunity to confirm my belief, that there was probably not much else in the household for him to play with other than the guitar - these days children have so many distractions, like The Captain's own daughter. Secondly, I totally agree with you, and suggest that what you're referring to is a kind of meditation, being in that meditative state, enjoying the whole recording experience, from album cover, album art and the music and ceremony of playing that album playing ritual, has all but gotten lost.
Well put.
lol
Austin Dyer cracking comment. Gg is clearly exceptionally intelligent and dare I say it , logical. Virtually a Vulcan. In a good way.
Austin Dyer To be honest, I think you are wrong, at least in part. First, it is not true that today the industry controls the music. You might say that the industry controls commercial music, but that's a totally different thing. Today's music is much more varied than in the past, basically everything exists. The fact that innovative and experimental bands are not as popular as they used to be in the 60s and 70s doesn't mean that there's nothing left. All over the world there are thousands of great bands that make good, complex and inspiring music and that also carries a message. Whatever you may like exists, you only have to look for it.
Second, I also disagree with your idea that today's young people do not like (or are not able to) having that "religious experience" you associate with music. I agree with the idea that today listening to music is much different than it used to be in the past, but that doesn't mean that it is worse or it is not as good of an experience as before. Now I can listen to Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, Genesis and whatever else with just one single playlist, without having to change a cd or a vynil, but I can still listen to one full album if I want to. Besides, there are other forms of art that people "use" to achieve that kind of experience, such as movies, photography, tv series and even videogames. A lot of them are much more profound and complex than you may think at first glance. It's normal that less people enjoy music differently than in the past, because today there is much more choice. Maybe there is someone who feels the same way as you do when listening to The Dark Side Of The moon when they watch movies. Or leaf through a photography book, or go to a theatre.
The fact that people live differently than in the past doesn't mean that their experiences and emotions are less powerful and profound.
