    Given that our musical tastes are a little different & our levels of ability are miles apart, I wasn't sure how this interview would go. But I needn't have worried!! John is such a cool, humble & easy to get along with guy. He was so engaging & happy to talk about whatever we wanted to in the interview. He even let his lunch go cold when two young fans saw us eating & wanted to talk to him! I know this is a long video, but take your time, stick it on the big screen, kick back with a beer & take it all in!! You'll learn something for sure. Thanks to John & to everyone involved in making this interview happen. Loved it!!

      I'm glad to see someone as massively influential as John in one of these videos. Dream Theater is the first prog band I ever listened to, and while they're not my favorite, they do have some of my favorite prog songs of all time, and I never would've gotten into bands like Meshuggah, Periphery, and Mastodon without hearing DT first.
      On the topic of prog metal musicians... Nolly from periphery would be amazing to see a Capt. Meets of. No idea if he'd be willing to, but I think every single bass player in your audience would implode simultaneously if so.

    I love this interview. I feel that John Petrucci often gets very miscast as a player. People often focus on him being this amazingly fast and technically proficient virtuoso guitarist. And don't get me wrong he is that and that's impressive enough on its own but he's more than that. He's also a player with a fantastic sense of melody and phrasing who can make the most beautiful chord progressions and some absolutely monstrous riffs. The guy is a true master of the guitar and he's also incredibly humble and comes off as a really nice cool guy.

      @@blender1188 I take your point, but the dude was in a band with GEDDY LEE and NEIL PEART, for heaven’s sake... So, yeah, he kinda has been a little overlooked as a guitarist. But not by those who take their playing seriously. Among other things, his solo ideas are always unexpected, even off the wall strange, and yet thoroughly idiosyncratic at the same time, which is about the rarest thing there is with guitarists.

      yep, although I wish he would use a bit less fx in these kind of things, there was also this clinic where he uses a ton of delay which I imagine fits better when he is playing in DT, but solo like this, it would be nicer if he rolled that a bit back

    • @danielhall7996
      @danielhall7996 6 років тому +2

      daolchang Yeah, agreed. I have to admit though, I saw DT live a couple of days ago in Toronto, and his heavy rhythm tone was absolutely brutal (in a good way). He shouldn't change his heavy rhythm tone, it's perfect!

    • @KX5Kat
      @KX5Kat 6 років тому +10

      Playing fast isn't always showing off. Some people actually enjoy the energy of shred and are able to, quite easily, feel the emotion and soul from fast stuff in the same way others, usually the one who scoff at anything about 8th notes, feel emotion from the slow stuff.
      I think shred usually gets a bad rep because the majority of serious guitarists are... old. They want music from their era and haven't quite been sensitized to the subtleties lurking in the speed. That and that assclown Malmsteen doesn't really help.

    • @danielhall7996
      @danielhall7996 6 років тому +3

      KX5Kat I love shred! I have to admit that the first time I heard of Petrucci was back in high school, when a friend of mine that was very knowledgable about all things metal, knew that I was very hard to please with regards to lead guitar. He knew that I was looking for extremely fast shredding, but that I was dissatisfied with the more popular shredders out there, such as Dimebag Darrel, Kirk Hammett, Jeff Hanneman, etc. He said "you need to check out Dream Theater,, their guitarist, John Petrucci may be the fastest guitarist out there, and more importantly, his technique is perfect!" My first JP experience happened shortly thereafter when a fellow student in my grade 10 guitar class brought in his VHS copy of JP's "Rock Discipline", and I remember when he started playing the chromatic exercises, I thought to myself "This guy's speed and precision is freakish". I couldn't believe how relaxed he looked, and how professional his technique looked - seated with his left leg raised on a footrest, classical position, and the only movement in his alternate picking technique was in the wrist (I know he's become somewhat of a forearm picker in the last 10 years, but he never used to be). The thing I like about Petrucci is that even when he does play slower stuff, because of things like his tendency to rake into notes, his perfect vibrato, and his note selection, it still sounds completely bad ass. You see, as much as I am a shred fan, I can appreciate the slower playing too, as long as it's done right. I can't stand when someone is playing slow just due to limitations in their technique, which usually results in boring movements within the pentatonic box positions, and the sustaining of notes that aren't strong notes (hey, let's feature the note A while playing in the key of Em, over top of a G chord 🙄).

    It took the Majesty demo to encourage me to spend 2 hours watching this, but what a great interview! John Petrucci is just amazingly impressive, not just in his playing, but his personality. How many huge guitar heroes would generously give hours of his time for a UA-cam interview? I suspect, not many. Many people could learn from this.

    Lee... thanks for all those great interviews. That relaxed style of talking to great musicians in _human mode_ instead of _celebrity mode_, off the beaten path and the usual questions of fans and magazines, until what started as an interview becomes simply two musicians chatting about their passion is rare, refreshing, and very much appreciated. Greetings from Austria!
