Given that our musical tastes are a little different & our levels of ability are miles apart, I wasn't sure how this interview would go. But I needn't have worried!! John is such a cool, humble & easy to get along with guy. He was so engaging & happy to talk about whatever we wanted to in the interview. He even let his lunch go cold when two young fans saw us eating & wanted to talk to him! I know this is a long video, but take your time, stick it on the big screen, kick back with a beer & take it all in!! You'll learn something for sure. Thanks to John & to everyone involved in making this interview happen. Loved it!!

I'm glad to see someone as massively influential as John in one of these videos. Dream Theater is the first prog band I ever listened to, and while they're not my favorite, they do have some of my favorite prog songs of all time, and I never would've gotten into bands like Meshuggah, Periphery, and Mastodon without hearing DT first.
On the topic of prog metal musicians... Nolly from periphery would be amazing to see a Capt. Meets of. No idea if he'd be willing to, but I think every single bass player in your audience would implode simultaneously if so.

I love this interview. I feel that John Petrucci often gets very miscast as a player. People often focus on him being this amazingly fast and technically proficient virtuoso guitarist. And don't get me wrong he is that and that's impressive enough on its own but he's more than that. He's also a player with a fantastic sense of melody and phrasing who can make the most beautiful chord progressions and some absolutely monstrous riffs. The guy is a true master of the guitar and he's also incredibly humble and comes off as a really nice cool guy.

    • @KX5Kat

Playing fast isn't always showing off. Some people actually enjoy the energy of shred and are able to, quite easily, feel the emotion and soul from fast stuff in the same way others, usually the one who scoff at anything about 8th notes, feel emotion from the slow stuff.
I think shred usually gets a bad rep because the majority of serious guitarists are... old. They want music from their era and haven't quite been sensitized to the subtleties lurking in the speed. That and that assclown Malmsteen doesn't really help.

@@blender1188 I take your point, but the dude was in a band with GEDDY LEE and NEIL PEART, for heaven’s sake... So, yeah, he kinda has been a little overlooked as a guitarist. But not by those who take their playing seriously. Among other things, his solo ideas are always unexpected, even off the wall strange, and yet thoroughly idiosyncratic at the same time, which is about the rarest thing there is with guitarists.

The only thing that exceeds John Petrucci's playing and ear is his personality and humbleness. Hands down my favorite Captain interview and video.. great job Captain. The Mesa Boogie Mark JP-2C sounds absolutely beautiful then monstrous and then both at the same time... Boogie knocked it out of the park with that amp.
