Love watching anything with Guthrie in it. The dude is smart, articulate, and ridiculously talented. Also, he is living proof that self-taught guitarists can become masters!
There's no such thing as "self-taught". Also, ask yourself: at what age did he start, where did he learn his techniques, whom did he have the good fortune to know, what was his musical environment like, and so on and so forth. I'd say that for anyone to reach this level it's basically 99.999999% that 1) They have to start young 2) They have to take lessons (or something *like* lessons, eg UA-cam or Skype
I don’t believe Guthrie is self taught. Just his posh voice, gives this away lol he was 💯 taught professionally. Off topic now lol, we all learn in our own style and we try to mimmick our idols as well to learn etc.
i feel like out of many guitar tutorials Guthrie has one of the best "Teacher" Demeanors. He's patient, truthful, extremely helpful. Thanks for the vid.
@gravitationalconstant he is not in sync when he tries to play fast. he tires during longer pieces. watch Anton Oparin bust a few "great" guitarists picking technique. Its called "Does universal guitar technique exist"
I’m a straight ahead jazz player Guthrie but I commend you on beautifully explaining the mechanics of alternate picking. You dissected all of the most important mechanics and technique. And by the way, you’ve got some hands brother.
This is going to be my Start Lesson every day now... Thank you, so much, Guthrie... You are Really a Good hearted Musician... The world needs more inspiration like this...Guitar Freaks here I come! Ha!
I would love to have a crash course with Guthrie for a week. Just imagine the knowledge you would gain?? I really believe he is the greatest of all time.
I JUST started holding the pick like this yesterday and it felt awkward at first but I quickly acclimated to it.. and it DOES result in a nicer attack and bigger tone.... I was literally amazed!
+G17AR On top of this concept, you can strap a cellphone right above the strings, and onto the neck, to show an amazing angle. I've only seen this on one video but it really lets you see the picking hand.
+SYF_Gaming Search on youtube for a guy called Troy grady, he has a series aimed at pickmechanics and even designed a camera setup so you can see the picking hand in slow motion. He's had many great guitarists take part in his series aswell including steve morse, rustey cooley and michael angelo batio. I've never come across a more detailed look into alternate picking, sweep picking and general right hand mechanics than his series.
+Godspeed961 Seriously what the fuck were they thinking?!! "Let's stare at this hand that's not moving for 10 seconds whilst something incredible happens just out of view that you are watching this video to learn about".
I honestly liked his teaching method. I tried finding more lessons by him, but came across other people on this channel. Gonna browse through the playlists again. Thanks for the lesson.
Been a super fan of Joe Satriani since the release of Surfing with the Alien ( went back and picked up Not of this Earth ) Joe has been my favorite all this time surpassing other greats like Vai Gilbert Freedman Malmsteen etc . Here comes Guthrie . Now this is the next step up . This guy is on a completely different level than anyone else . Truly Amazing
Excellent lesson. Thank you so much for spending so much time on the pick, how to hold the pick, and movement of fingers versus wrist versus elbow. This is all extremely valuable information that is very rarely covered.
Just throwing it out there, there is not cameraman to blame here. The video has 3 cameras simultaneously filming, one wide angle, one picking hand closeup, and one fretting hand close up. It's the editor who chooses which footage to play over the audio track and when. Blame the editor. Hard to believe they would hire an editor who knows nothing about guitar though.
I'd love to hear this entire lesson with a clean, uncompressed electric, or a mic'ed acoustic. The super-compressed overdriven tone used here is kind of a hadicap because, if you hit a note softly the compression pushes it up, if you hit it extra hard the clipping limits it. I'm not for one second suggesting Master Govan isn't playing perfectly, I believe he is. I would just like to hear all the subtleties of his playing.
+John Morgan Yes, it would've great if someone had clued the editing staff in on what this video's focus was. You'd think that they would check out, maybe...I don't know... THE TITTLE! Probably non guitar players.
The angled pick is my favorite way to play. The pick slips over the strings instead of catching, and the attack is a little wider and softer. Because the pick is not fighting the strings, the arm and wrist are more relaxed. Relaxed muscles move faster, rigid muscles are slower.
One other tip, don’t forget if you use extra light gauge strings and tune down, such as a half step, this can cause a similar problem to using a thinner pick. It can cause a lot of play in the string up and down. You may not realize the loose vertical movement of the string can make alternate picking harder. If you’re stuck at a certain speed, try heavier strings or another guitar that is setup for heavier strings with less vertical play.
I play 08 on my high E and tune down a half step and use thick picks. Really all you need is a lighter touch. For me, it's easier to play fast and clean with extra light gauge on the high strings because it actually forces you to have a lighter touch and restrict your movement so its more 'economical'.
Great tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing your talent and knowledge. Had the privilege of seeing you in Durban, South Africa. Virtuoso of note!! (pun intended!!) :)
If y'all would stop whining about every little thing and just listen to the guy, you'll learn the technique. Guthrie is an excellent teacher and he explains everything in a way anyone can understand.
Mr Govan...I just saw a video with Rick Beato and I ask for your forgiveness for not being aware of your amazing skills until just recently. Where have I been??? Wow...I'm in my mid 60's and grew up with the classic guitarist and played guitar until recently. You are unique and a blend of so many styles and it's refreshing to hear. Thank you so much and you have a new fan...
Hi Guys, great guitarist , thanks for sharing. The only recommendation is that if this is a Picking technique lesson, it would be useful to record he right hand instead of the left hand. Don't you think?
@@slipperysalmon Based on how young Guthrie looks on this video, there's no way this was only 2 years ago at the time of your comment. It's probably one from the vault which was only uploaded recently.

Guthrie Govan: World Class!!! The Producer: maybe thinking about for the future: producing a video on Alternate Picking showing the fretboard-hand is not really helpful...Especially the exercises with the sequences on one string and the string-change-exercises would be more helpful, if the students could see, how Guthrie Govan manages the string-change and if he uses forearm-motion or palmmotion. What a pity to miss such a chance :-( Nevertheless thank you Guthrie Govan for your insights.

great camera work on the picking hand guys.
The picking lesson where the camera cuts away from the picking hand every time he plays. Gotta love it.
Absolutely my thoughts. Video should be called "left hand fretting".
My thoughts exactly!
Yep - a ‘beyond pointless’ video!
🙄
well, the guy's explanation is so good, that you _almost_ don't need to see his picking hand.
Right 👍 I *completely agree* a GREAT VIDEO 📹 😊
