Introducing "The Radius Shawl"-
This is a Template Pattern. It's Concept pattern.
What that means is you can take what you learn in this tutorial and vary the elements of this design to acheive your own special look.
You can make a semi-circle shawl.
You can make a circle shawl.
You can make a scarf.
You can make a poncho.
You can vary the way the striping shows up. All is explained in great details.
This is a template that you'll be able to use many times as a foundation for different designs of your own.
Vary the stitch combinations to make this into a Lace Shawl.
Many options.
But even if you don't want options, just follow my instructions and you can make one just like the one seen in this video.
On top of that, this will take you under a week to make.

I’ve been crocheting for at least 30 years. When I need to keep track of a stitch or a stitch count, I put in a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to remind me that something is going to happen in that stitch. This makes crocheting so much more relaxing because I don’t have to constantly be worried about the stitch counting while I am crocheting. I can enjoy the process and know that I have a flag telling me something different is happening with the stitch marker. I recommend using stitch markers to anyone I teach to crochet. They can be your friend.

I found stitch markers very useful for this pattern. I placed a marker every 10th stitch and left them in place until I finished the full row, then moved them up to start the next set of short rows. Worked marvellously and also highlighted the "awkward" stitch.

Thank you Mandy. That is a fabulous idea!! I can picture that!! It will be easy to do actually. Long starting chain from your neck to however long you want it. I would do less than more of the increase sections since it will be so long. The more increase sections the more flare it will be. Please please share your progress with me. I’d love to see it. What yarn are you considering?
Also the hood and pockets will be easy to add at the end.

I would measure from her neck and down her back and over her shoulders Health, how far you want that radius to be. And then figure out how many stitches you need to create to get that length, and then round it to a number that you can make your intervals even. If that makes sense.

I had this same yarn in my stash, didn't know what to make with it. I just started this pattern, you made a wonderful video and very clear and thorough. However, I still have managed to aee where my short rows end as there are little spaces.

It will take me several MONTHS to finish this beautiful cape since I have many health issues, one being carpel tunnel, neuropathy and arthritis in both my hands/arms and it takes me a very long time to complete my projects. I also have a lot of commitments July and August, this is why I am starting this now so I hope to have it completed by Nov. Totally agre with you about the Denice interchangeable hooks they are very strong and won't break easy like some of the wooden varnished ones out their and their lockingsystemworks it never comes apart- this is a gorgeous shawl and I want to do this - thank you for sharing and teaching us

Love the pattern just found it and can't wait to knit it. WIth regards to counting your rows there actually is no row 7 the way you made it because that full row is row one of the pattern repeat SO you have only 6 rows in each wedge. Thanks so much for sharing .....

I have wide shoulders and am of substantial build and am new to Tunisian crochet so for me it would have been helpful for me to have you also explain how to adjust number of stitches needed for length and size differences. Otherwise great instructions regarding choice of yarn and I might give this a try - looks like fun technique to learn. Thxs
Hi Miryana, Thank you for that feedback. I would recommend measuring how far down your arm you would like the shawl to rest. So measure from the back of your neck to the desired place on your arm. This will be the length of your starting chain. Regarding the circumference, simply keep following the pattern until it goes around you the desired amount of coverage. Does this help? Would this work the same if u wanted 2 make a skirt/shirt that can flair?
Not really looking for a pleated thing but have a gradual flare that hangs nicely at the base.....
Yes it would work. You’ll just have to experiment to get the right amount of flair that you desire as well as having your waist line. Be the size that you want to do that you will need to have a rows that are not short rows.

@@LightandJoyDesigns I wish! I got a decent amount done. But now it's sitting on my WIP table, waiting for me to pick it up again. You'd think having to stay home I'd have more time to craft, but it's actually the opposite! I will get back to it and hopefully finish it by next Winter. Haha
I must say though, it's a very easy pattern to follow and works up quickly when you can just sit and simple stitch. :D

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but I have space where I end each short row. I don't think my stitches are too tight, but maybe?

You will see that there is a space/hole where the short row ends that is a little larger than the other spaces.
Depending on your tension/tightness of stitches and the size hook you are using this hole may seem larger or smaller.
As long as you are striving for even tension and stitches that are "goldilocks" - that is- stitches that are "just right" (not too tight, not too loose) - then overall when you complete this item you will not notice these spaces/holes.
It's like this for any crocheted item, there's always going to be some spaces/holes. These can be minimized by smaller hooks and tighter stitches, but crochet is naturally going to have some amount of spaces between stitches.
But once the overall garment is completed, people will not be fixated on the holes/spaces, they become perfectly integrated with the overall look of the item.
Hi Kris, one of the best tutorials for edge stitch I’ve seen on UA-cam. Is there a way to make the inside edge of this shawl bigger? I don’t like anything too high on the neck so would prefer a wider inside edge. Would doing an extra full row on each repeat do that do you think? Or would it be better to put more stitches on the short rows eg: in your sample of 60 stitches make the increments 15 instead of 10 so I would have more full rows in relation to the outer row. I can’t come up with a formula to work this out. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. 👏👏❤️❤️🇬🇧
Yes, I believe adding an extra full row will make the inside edge longer. Making the increments longer as you mention 15 versus 10 will make the outer edge shorter relative to the inside edge. So yes that will work too. You'll just end up doing more rows overall I believe. A great way to play with this is to actually draw it out like I show in the video. Draw a few different ideas and use as similar dimensions in your drawing as you can. This will help you see what you like best, before committing with yarn! Please please please let me know how this turns out for you!!

Can I make this shawl using the lace stitch with size 1 or 2 thread? If yes, what Guage would you recommend for the needle?
You’ll need to test it out with some swatching to get the look you want. Just make a mini version and then when you have the look you want then use that as your gauge.
I have a question does the top of the shawl turn into a collar or a turtleneck
Since the top edge only has a few stitches, if you fold it in two you might get a short collar. You could double the amount of stitches at the neck (where you have the long rows) and make a turtleneck by folding that piece down.

I've watched the video a few times and read the pattern. I'm still confused with figuring how many chains you need. The pattern said to determine length and divide by two, chain that length and in a multiple that can be divided by your Short Row interval. TIA
Start: How wide do you want your overall shawl to be? This is the DIAMETER of the circle that this shawl will be. Divide this in half to get the RADIUS you desire. This will be in inches or cm.
(Make a 6" x 6" swatch to get the gauge for your yarn and hook choice)
Find out how many stitches you will need to get the RADIUS you want. Let's call this number N.
Then determine the INTERVAL you want to use (5, 10, 15 stitches - any number you want)
Then adjust number N so that your Interval number will divide into that evenly.
So let's say you want your circle or half circle shawl to be 40" in DIAMETER.
That means the RADIUS will be 20 inches. This will also be the HEIGHT of your shawl. This is your starting measurement.
Next let's say that when I make my SWATCH I determine that it takes 63 stitches to make 20 inches. 63 is my number N.
Let's say that I am choosing 10 stitches as my INTERVAL.
So now I need to adjust my number N (63) to be able to be evenly divisable by 10. That means I need to either round up to 70 or round down to 60.
Let's say I decide that I'd rather round down so that the shawl is not bigger than the 20" radius. So I choose to round down to 60.
So you'll begin by chaining 60.
