The house looks mega creepy there and to think it had no spooky stigma attached to it then, it was just a normal American house to anyone, but now, anything remotely resembling it, or with windows that look anything like the famous moon shaped ones on the third floor are automatically associated with a "house of horror." I can understand why subsequent owners changed the look but hey, they'll never keep horror fans away!
I've read and watched everything about this story. The Defeo murders are tragic and they were due to his father's poor upbringing of Ronnie and that led to his drug use. Ronnie was high when he committed the murders. He said a demon gave him the gun. We will never know. The Defeos reportedly had a séance in the house earlier that year and there is evidence because there is a picture of Louise the mother during 1974 in Montreal at a shrine where they went for spiritual guidance due to paranormal problems in the house. That's why there are religious statues outside the house during the murders. As for the Lutz family, two of the boys are coming out in the last few years saying the haunting was true but due or enhanced because of their step dad's transcendental meditation. The boys hated their step-dad George, who really wanted to stay in the house to save money by using the boathouse to run his land surveying business instead of paying rent at another location. If it was a hoax, it would be a great way for the boys, now in their 40s, to get back at George. You can tell in interviews now the boys are shaken up about what happened to them in the house in 74-75. The Lutz's were not in it for money. When they shared the story publicly initially, they had no idea it would take off. Several other people in the house including paranormal specialists said there were spirits in the house during March 1976. A realtor with three other realtors had an experience in the basement during 2010, the only paranormal story that is on the net about the house since the 70s. Even if the Lutz's story was a hoax, it is amazing all the bad luck with that house as the Cromarty's son died while living there or soon after, the ONeill's son who after moving out died on 9-11, a possible drowning outside the house the 50s, actress Christine Belford said her parents, who lived there before the Defeos, consistently fought in the house. The house either has horrible bad luck or something we can't see is controlling it.

I do not believe in the Amityville Horror stories. I have been in the house on several occasions and never once heard a peep from anywhere in the house. I was in the house before Ronnie committed the murders as I was a friend of Marc Defeo and I was in the house after the Lutz's moved as another friend resided there for years. If I may ask you a couple question because this case puzzles me. 1. I'm trying to make sense of this tragedy. I've come to the conclusion that either Ronnie Jr. was horribly abuse which just made him snap that day. It could be explained as Dad was abusive, Mom did nothing to stop it and his jealousy toward the other kids who weren't getting the fathers wrath would create lots of anger. Energy doesn't go away so that anger along with untimely deaths would leave a lot of bad energy in the house. Or 2. Did he hear voices telling him to do it weather it was demonic or in his head? The thing is I do believe the Warren's. They are/were not money hungry people. They are/were the type of people that wanted to help others in a field that is very controversial. When I knew Marc we were just kids. We played in the backyard and along the canal. I don't recall him ever mentioning anything negative about his home life. I am in my 50s now and as the years pass, unfortunately so do the memories. I do remember Marc was a good kid. Well behaved. As kids growing up during that time period, we didn't spend much time in the house and when I was in the house it was unremarkable. Years later after the tragedy and after the Lutz's moved away another friend's Dad purchased the home. Personally for me, it was eerie to return to the home where my friend had been murdered but other than that, I do not remember the home feeling haunted. I do not remember anything peculiar about it, just my own personal sadness. Perhaps it may be. Perhaps my own personal grief clouded my senses or perhaps encouraged them. I may never know as my friend has long since sold the home and we have lost touch.

I don't know why but this case bothers me so much and I guess because there is so much out there on it and no two stories seem to be the same. I use to work with mentally ill patients so I'm very interested in what makes a person do such horrible things and how their minds work.
