I used to live two towns over from this house. It always amazed me how normal it looked. I don’t believe in ghosts but the Defoe part of the story always horrified me. My mom worked at Brunswick where they treated him. She never met the man but told me stories about people who did. That house taught me evil can live in the most ordinary places; to quote A Haunting.

@@Kingsombra21 I also live pretty close and have been to the house. I don't understand how nobody heard anything, especially multiple shot gun blasts. It's such a quiet street and the houses next door are so much closer than you imagine from the movies.

An interesting coincidence: Jay Anson, author of "The Amityville Horror" died on March 12, 1980. Ronald DeFeo, Jr. the killer, died on March 2021.

The real horror in this story are the people. Imagine being so abusive you turned someone into a serial killer.
he may well be in amphetamine induced psychosis while doing all it, abusive parents and heavy drug use is terrible combination for disaster
Most serial killers have an overbearing mother and absentee father, with Butch Defeo his father worked for his grandfather so they could've gotten the father to leave and financially their lives would not have changed. Also his father gave him a head injury. Many killers have head injuries in common.

@@MzBroadway17 As a person who was bullied in school, with abusive parents. At times I felt suicidal or have murderous thoughts, yes maybe a little. It could have been avoided if he was treated better.
But his sentence in jail was just and fair. There is no excuse for murdering someone as that is not right.

The Conjuring 2 is about the Enfield Poltergeist, which happened here in the UK, not Amityville.
I think they touch on it at the beginning of the film. Like a glimpse in the future.

I’m from Long Island and have seen the house myself. I’m pretty sure I’d remember if I was in Jersey or not.
Ikr now the real question is we’re they buried in farmindale NY or NJ. Apparently there is a farmindale in NJ but they are hardly credible

In the 70's the family across the street from my grandmother USED to have the most VIOLENT full family physical flights I have ever seen to this day. The father actually was a school teacher. He once threw a pitch fork from a second floor Deck at his 16 or so Year old son going completely through his thigh. Imagine explaining that to emergency room doctors today?
I think the Lutz's got scared of that giant mortgage payment. 😈

Hearing this story makes me think that the ghost story is just an excuse for his crime. An insanity excuse made to get a lighter sentence
Insanity pleas are not what you think they are, you don’t get a lighter sentence, you get a different treatment, you get put into a mental facility for life and the isolation will drive you crazy

I saw this house out of my bedroom window, directly across the canal (Riverside Ave) for 2 years. I couldn't stop at 7-11 without giving directions to someone almost every day. It's weird how the movies portray it as almost rural and on a lake, it's a canal and probably 1/4th of an acre lot, maybe less.

I live 15 minutes away from this house and just driving past it give me chills. But probably I was influenced by the stories of it all. Seems to me the hauntings may be exaggerated if not completely false. Even more sad is we’re never going to truly know what happened to The DeFeo family.

I don't support Butch killing anybody, but if he had only killed his father he probably wouldn't have died in prison. That's why I don't buy that he killed everybody because he was abused. I think he killed both of his parents and all of his siblings because he wanted to be the sole heir to his parents estate. It was greed that was the true horror in Amityville.
A haunted house cursed by the greed, sadness, and hatred of the killer. Rest in Peace, DeFeo family, and I hope Butch recovered his sanity and regret what he did in the Purgatory...

St Charles cemetery in Farmingdale NY, is where they are buried. Not New Jersey. I used to work there and to pass by their graves always gave me an eerie feeling.

Nov. '74: multiple homicides take place in the house
Dec. '75: the Lutz family moves in
Jan. '76: the Lutz family flees
Sept. '77: the book gets published
Summer '79: the movie hits theaters across the nation
I go to school in Farmingdale, NY, which is a town 20 minutes away from Amityville. Just earlier this night, the night of the publication of this comment, I drove over to 112 Ocean Ave to see the house for myself. It’s funny how normal everything looked. A dog was strolling on the far side of a fence (the fence that faces toward the street), and there was a huge, blow-up dragon spewing smoke from its mouth perched on top of the house as a Halloween decoration. The family that lives in the house was also casually setting up other decorations as I drove by. So weird to think that these people are so undaunted in the face of the evil that occupied that house circa 50 years ago. Almost makes the house look appealing enough to live in it myself. Almost

The only thing that doesn't make sense in this story, is how did no one hear gunshots? Experts inspected rhe gun and said there was no evidence of it using a suppressor and that the gun which was used was notoriously loud.

I'm still wondering if dawn had something to do with it. She had gun powder on her night gown. Butch has changed his story alot over the years so you cant trust him 100% yet there is no conceivable reason for dawn to have that on her dress unless she fired a gun that night
My grandma lives blocks away from the real house. It's still very ominous looking, although the missing quarter moon windows take away from it somewhat.

DeFeo didn't die in prison. He died at Albany Medical Center. I live right outside of Albany. There was an article in the local newspaper about him.
