  • In Episode 69 we go inside the world?s most famous haunted house -- Amityville -- with one of the three people still alive today who knows exactly what happened. On November 13, 1974, Ronald Butch DeFeo Jr. walked into his house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, and shot his two parents, his two brothers, and two sisters dead. He was convicted of the crime and still sits in jail today. The house sat empty for over a year and the price plummeted. In December of 1975, the Lutz Family: George, Kathy, and Kathy?s children Daniel, Melissa, and Christopher, all from a previous marriage moved in. For the next 28 days the family experienced haunting events that would eventually make this home one of the most famous haunted houses in the world today. The Amityville Horror, as it was known has been the subject of a lot of controversy over the years. There have been books written about it, movies made, and the debate continues to rage on. Tonight we hear from Christopher Quaratino (Lutz), who was seven years old when his family lived in the infamous house. We hear about what really happened and how those events have affected his life ever since. Tune in!

This interview confirms what I've always expected: that we have yet to hear the true story of the Amityville Horror - especially since skeptics have picked both the book and the movies apart but never the actual story which we have yet to hear -

I've seen several interviews with Chris and while he does say the book was made up/embellished he NEVER ONCE really talks about what really happened. He mentions a few doors opening and shutting and weird behavior by the dog, but what else happened. I can't believe the whole family would flee due to a few opening windows. If Chris wants to tell the real story, he needs to actually TELL IT- what happened??

I totally agree. If we knew the real story it would scare the hell out of us more so than a jump scare. With most haunting it is a psychological experience and what we see in our minds can be horrific.

Thank you for allowing this man to speak the truth. Even before he spoke the words my thoughts were the same. The real evil attached to that house was always "greed" and "lies" , demons that can take over any of us , in any home if we let them. George was a very sick man indeed.

That these men have shared their story helps so much because I work with people and sometimes this is an issue. I treat it therapeutically like any other issue. And they are so relieved it's not weird, and addressed like having difficult neighbors or family. These three children, now adults, suffered so much but they need to know, they've helped so many more people than they will ever realize.

Talking about how they were so screwed over in all the movies, documentaries and book deals rather than actually discussing their experiences in the house. Children have vivid imaginations and can over hear certain things and think it pertains to something else. I wonder how vivid the Truth actually is in his adult mind. Thank you for your service to our country, Mr. Quaratino. I really feel bad for the hardship you're family had to endure first with what took place in that house and they way you all as children were treated. The second film horrified me not because of the story because of how they did treat the dead child, and even changed the deceased girls name to Jody. Terrible.

I could not even imagine how horrible it would be to live in a house that 6 people were murdered in and to add to the horrible experience to have to sleep in the same beds that the children were murdered in i would have burned those beds. Christopher I am sorry you had to go through that at such a young age. I lived in a house that a teenager hung him self in my bedroom and I had horrible experience there one night so bad my brother and I were so terrified we came running downstairs and one of our neighbors was over visiting when we were telling our mother about what we had just seen upstairs that neighbor lady turned pale and said oh my god I have to get out of here. Later after we had left the house and all of our belongings we found out about the suicide that happened in my bedroom we had no place to go and my uncle stayed the night and he had to leave in the middle of the night because he couldn’t stay in there and he was not a superstitious person and he didn’t have the room for us to stay with him and wanted nothing more than for us to return to our house because it was such a great deal and we couldn’t afford to rent another house for that price I remember that our Christmas tree was still inside with our Christmas gifts and we couldn’t even get them there was such an evil presence in there it was very hard to breathe the only way to explain it was walking into the house was like trying to breathe under water

I worry about the siblings a lot, they have been through an abusive situation that was tainted by evil and it destroyed their family. They need love, understanding and support regardless of what you believe actually happened. What they don't need is for people to judge them harshly. I hope all three of them can eventually move forward, I know they can never forget what happened but move forward to a place where they can be at peace with the past and accept it for what it was. They were given a curse but also a gift in that the pain they went through makes it so they can now help others going through that pain. If they focus on helping others all the negatives now turn into positives.

This haunting isn't about the house. It's about the people like it always is in every other story. The house always gets the attention and that's a stubborn recurring mistake in these events. My family witnessed poltergeist activity and it's the same as every other story. It had nothing to do with the house. The house was incidental. We are time-space creatures so we have to be somewhere at any given time. Hauntings are about the people who witness them. They are connected to things that nearly everybody else can't observe. Convention on poltergeist activity from the 1970s is correct, as the phenomena my family experienced followed those conventions (e.g family trauma, a recent move, often involving a young girl 8-12 years old, and all the classic symptoms of a "poltergeist".

If you watch Chris’ brother Daniel’s doco (my amityville horror) he says while his hands were crushed, ‘a spirit came into the kitchen, passed through his hands, and sat down at the table.. then left abruptly’ and his hands were healed (except for 2 fingers.. but then he says 1..) and he was never taken to the hospital.. it’s a very random and inconsistent story, but he reinforces he was never taken to the hospital

He claimed that his sister dawn did shooting too, which evidence tends to back it up (from what I’ve seen). Also the biggest claim is that, butch used to get coke for Cathy and dope for George BEFORE the murders. And as far as the stories, their lawyer exaggerated them. Example: (1) ooze coming from walls was the finger print powder left over from police investigation. (2) “the pig” was the neighbors cat who used to jump on the outside of window and his eyes reflected from light. Also, the “red room” in basement was painted by the defeo kids. And that’s from a boy who grew up with him. If u search, you shall find. Lol

jim gutz I can tell you from experience as a Realtor, they never leave the heat or A/C on for you to show it, so the house is ALWAYS either hot as hell or like ice. You get bored sitting there, and all houses have weird noises, even brand new ones. First and last thing I do is turn on/off all the lights, also to make sure I'm.by myself. Because more than one agent was murdered in a house they were showing. I think you could get bored, and freak yourself out. They also never leave you any furniture, either. I once watched Obey the Walrus in a vacant new house out of sheer boredom and was more than freaked out during a blizzard. Odd to be freaked out in the basement, since no one was killed there. I'd be way more freaked in the bedrooms.
