Dont forget that toonami also introduced a generation to Miyazaki. In 2006 they played a month of Miyazaki and helped me start on a lifelong love of his work
Toonami was for me as a teenager what Saturday morning cartoons were for me as a kid.I think with the previous generations before mine there wasn’t much in the way of good cartoon programming aimed pre teens and teens, which is why even Doug’s generation typically stopped watching cartoons and only came back later because of nostalgia or because they started watching it with their kids. While a lot of people I grew up with never stopped because there was enough quality and mature content that we didn’t merely think of cartoons as “kid’s stuff” and grow out of it.
I'm amazed they didn't mention how one of the characters from the original Powerpuff Girls, Ace from the Gangreen Gang, is still relevant, having joined Gorillaz as a replacement for Murdoch.
@@Xunkun like yo that commercial Stinger "Tom....is dead" I still can recite the whole commercial by heart that shit got me so hyped when I was younger seeing Tom 2 after seeing Tom just vanish I was freakin man!
Nope, unfortunately they didn't kiss! In this scene they were talking about the first kiss ever, done by Adam and Eve (in the original Japanese dub.) Sorry to disappoint you, but it's clearly not them. They even resemble more Usagi & Mamoru (Serena & Darien), since one of them has odangos. But they're still a couple and it's very obvious in the show.
Even worse, Kidz Bop censored "Born This Way" and made the boys sing the part about the female lover in "Bad At Love" to censor the fact that Halsey's bi.
Also Case Closed. That show was my jam back in the day and I have absolutely no idea why it tanked in the ratings on Adult Swim. Not only is it still alive in Japan but thriving all these years: the most recent episode ranking #2 of ALL anime that week.
"Well, this is the end, beautiful friends. After more than 11 years, this is Toonami's final broadcast. It's been a lot of fun, and we'd like to thank each and every one of you who made this journey with us. Toonami wouldn't have been anything without you. Adult Swim and Toonami probably wouldn't have even existed if it weren't for Space Ghost: Coast To Coast. Still one of my favorite shows ever. Rest in peace, Clay Martin Croker.
My parents loved Space Ghost. They're Japanese (I was born in Japan and then moved to the US shortly after), but they learned English growing up in the 80s. They didn't see the original Space Ghost's run in Japan as they were like 2 or 3 when it aired, but they do remember the original Birdman (it was called Denshi Choujin U-Bird in Japan.) The rebooted takes on Space Ghost and Birdman made them laugh, ESPECIALLY the episode where the cow rants about how dumb the show is over the end credits.
I loved that too. I also liked how he did it a few times in a row, then didn't do it, which would typically mean the gag is over, so I think doing it one more time after that made it even better.
He was so HOT!! Don't forget, that era also gave us my first and favorite TIE, Trapped in Hyperspace. I remember playing the game, shame it's lost media now.
Adult swim with robot jones (he was one of the voices that did the disclaimer for adult swim) The fallowing shows are for no one over the age of 17(18 at the time) they include intense violence, sexual situations, corse language and suggestive dialog
I will always love how when Hamtaro premiered on Hamtaro, TOM was genuinely confused. "Huh...?" "Well..." "...Okay, heh, they're cute I guess. Hamtaro is coming up next."
I died laughing at that! I used to think TOM was much like myself, so that means I used to think he played with girls toys and was a fan of several girl groups! Even though he was meant to be 18 years old and had a deep, badass voice!

Looking back now, adult swim Saturday night was a different animal compared to today. Since Toonami was integrated into adult swim, just to show anime.
I'm surprised he didn't mention Outlaw Star, the show that traumatized me into loving anime, but I live in England, so I'm guessing it was in the Adult Swim block in the USA?
YuYu Hakusho was and will remain one of my favorite animes of all time. Yes it was a bit DBZ in format but was so willing to show shades of complexity in the villains from the start. Kurama having a noble reason for his original break in to basically the whole third and forth seasons having such complex villains that they seemed written to spite normal anime tropes.
In my eyes Yu yu hakisho was a better fighting anime because i feel like the fights werent just fights, it helped the story more and made the characters more interesting
I love how everyone acted like Hamtaro was the most badass anime on the list and just confusing Critic. Then they called the justice league laid back lol.

I remember that show. Wasn't that the one where all the adventures started because one kid fell in love with a girl that for a long time he, his friends, and the audience thought was just artificial intelligence? Seriously, does nobody realize the stupidity of the setup?
@@b3rz3rk3r9 I do have to get a few more jokes out. Isn't Code Lyoko from the land of trying to be Anime but giving up half way through, France? Also, how come their foreheads take up a third of their heads? Also, remember the live action reboot? Of course you don't. It only aired in France and never even got an official English translation.
I'm really surprised while talking about Toonami they never mentioned the actual Toonami STORY itself. I remember like Tom being in the middle of space battles and fighting for his life while entertaining us and we could go online to help him fight the space pirates through mini games.
I feel so old when I see some of these comments. I remember when Moltar hosted Toonami when I was a kid. I used to love watching Cartoon Network all day in between turning my TV to channel 3 to play video games. Childhood was awesome. In HS, I made it my mission to buy all of the Hanna Barbera and MGM classics that I loved watching on CN as a kid. Still don't have all of them yet, but I'm so glad WB finally released the Swat Kats complete collection a few years ago. And I would also like to get Spider-Man (Fox Kids), but it's been years and it still doesn't have an official home media release even though it was one of the baddest cartoons of all-time.
Batman: The Animated Series is on DC Universe, but if Adult Swim and Turner Broadcasting have Toonami on Adult Swim go into the streaming business, I would love for Batman: The Animated Series to be available for Toonami’s streaming service.

Thundercats, Symbionic Titan and the like did well in the ratings. The toys did not fly off the shelves in the middle of the recession for some odd reason. And the merch sales were the only thing CN execs cared for at the time.
Hamtaro is the most epic Toonami show, period. The pure violence and plot that was put into really helped the sheer emotion. (ok but it is fucking adorable tho)

That was a very depressing ending. Jackie Chan Adventures deserved a much better part than that; it really is one of the best shows that I remember. But, otherwise, this was a very fun episode.
Agreed, that was a very fun series. It might have drifted away into dumbness over time (or maybe I got too old for it) but its original season was really a lot of fun!
I don't recall watching "Jackie Chan Adventures" on Toonami, at least not that significantly. Maybe some episodes sometime...but it was always the epitome of the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" shift into the anime-esque/Pseudo-Anime form. Kinda like Hamtaro and The Powerpuff Girls.
I'm amazed they didn't talk about how Tom was killed and had to have a new body built or any of the Toonami storyline moments.
Yeah, they really shoulda talked about the _Intruder_ and _Lockdown_

But they're still a couple and it's very obvious in the show.

Walter's death stares had me dying. Dude was really tight about Hamtaro.

Show of thumbs how many people joined them when they said yes.
Never seen or read Dragon Ball
@@Jordan3DS Well gotta tell you, you don't know what you're missing.
@@marmik961 I just don't know how much I'd be into it. I'm not the biggest fan of battle manga, but the ones that I enjoy have a sense of strategy and smart thinking to them (like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), but Dragon Ball just looks like "one guy hits the other guy harder because he is stronger and wins" over and over, just with the opponents getting stronger.
@@Jordan3DS While it doesn't have that much in terms of strategy there are bits of it here and there. But it makes up for it by showing the stakes of certain fights the fate of the world or universe is at stake. There's also good animation, funny humor that's crude at times, imagination, and great characters.
It's at least worth looking into.

Please talk about Cartoon Cartoons! The good ol' days of CN are pure nostalgia!
Still loved the Golden age of Cartoon Network.
I more fondly remember those over Toonami
Miguzi happened when I was in 4th grade. It was supposed to be the "kid friendly" Toonami. It was a 2 hour block with Totally Spies, Teen Titans, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Code Lyoko. It ended after becoming just bumps instead for the rest of the Cartoon Network show line up at the time.
Code Lyoko I remembered it as well, I was about 10 I think when I started watching it, and I remembered loving it (learned later it was French-Anime which explained some things to me the show never addressed) I also remember it being one of the first kid shows I saw with some DARK imagery and scenes.
Like seriously every other episode we see people nearly being murdered and ONLY saved not because "Huzah a hero is here" no they would have been freaking dead if not for the magic retcon code
That’s how I got introduced to Code Lyoko and Totally Spies (as TT was also shown outside the block and that’s how I saw it) and I am forever thankful for it.
I was in fourth grade back then too, shit was a weird shift.
There was three shows with demon foxes. Shippo in Inuyasha, Kurama/Naruto in Naruto, and Kurama in YuYu Hakusho.
>Inuyasha
>INU yasha
>"demon fox"
...next thing you'll be saying is Bugs Bunny is a cat.
@@someoneintheshadow45 he didn't SAY it was inuyasha (the person)... Shippo is the tiny guy with a huge fox tail in the show...
someoneintheshadow45 normally not that guy, but Inu means dog, :v
@@someoneintheshadow45 A bit late but... Yasha translates to "Demon Girl"
@@AaronGanaron No, it doesn't. It's the Japanese form of Yaksha from Hindu/Jain/Buddhist mythology, and refers to a specific type of demon that can be either male or female.
I was 5 when Toonami started. I remember coming home that day expecting to watch the same shows I always did after school, and then this came on. I was like, whats this where are all my shows?
And then Rock the Dragon blared through my speakers and I got a jump start on puberty.
Toonami replaced the Power Zone, so your shows didn't go anywhere. They were simply rebranded the Cartoon Roulette.
With the talk of giant robots, liking of monsters, and huge fights...
You'd think Zoids would have a small glimpse here...
zoids new century zero! Bit cloud baby!...and dont forget Zoids chaotic century with Van Flyheight and Fiona!.....but honestly did they ever figure out who or what the zoidans were and why Fiona was the last one
OMG. I forgot all about that. Zoids was badass!
The model kits are still awesome. I just wish they were still more easy to find.
Oh yeah, bit cloud was that boi!

If you care to hunt it down there is a manga series.
Ah, no direct mention of Outlaw Star? You should also cover Adult Swim anime like Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain.
OUTLAW STAR!!! That show was and is still the best!!!
Outlaw Star was moved to Adult Swim in 2002 so they'll cover it in the adult swim sequel
That was such an awesome show! Would be cool if they do an adult swim episode on here covering that and the likes of Cowboy Bebop, Aqua Teen, Sealab, ect
Also no samurai champloo, shame on them.
Omg someone who also knows about Wolf's Rain!
Toonami was part of my childhood. Love Samurai Jack.
Half of these shows I always assumed were just Cartoon Network but I digress, I owe my amazing childhood to toonami!
LOL!
If the show wasn't enough, Cartoon Network released 4 Samurai Jack comic books via IDW Comics. Bought all 4 volumes this Monday from Half Price Books.
No Outlaw Star here makes me sad. That's easily one of my favorite anime of all time.
Exemplar Kyle hell it was helped voted back on BY FAN DEMAND after it was pulled along with other anime after the 9/11 attacks and America basically kneejerking content off...Outlaw Star was THAT coveted, even Tom stated “the voting WASNT even close!”
At least I’m not the only one who found that odd I feel like maybe the reason they didn’t include that anime was because of A Neither of them were fans of that anime or be they probably never knew that anime existed or something and I’ve seen outlaw I have it on Blu-ray. And I can say outlaw star is a fucking bad ass anime
Damn straight, Aisha was bae asf 👌
@@dereknight861 Heh, I remember I missed the first run because I was off at college, so my Dad and Sister, also big animation fans, told me about it. When I saw it won the fan vote, I was happy because it was summer time and I could actually get to watch it for myself! ^^
Outlaw Star! Why did no one talk about Outlaw Star *cries* and Ronin Warriors *CRIES*
He said there was so much, he couldn't cover every show. Maybe he will do a part 2.
@@januszeal6693 lets hope
Outlaw Star is what lead me to Cowboy Bebop. Rewatch it on the Funimation app!
@@issa4767 I always perfered Outlaw Star to Cowboy Bebop.
At least they left out inuyasha. I loved outlaw star too but I’ve only known one guy who knew ronin warriors. I used to wake up at 5 am to watch it
Does anyone else remember Shaman King or Shinzo?
That was Fox Kids and Jetix.
Different channel
@@thefanwithoutaface8105 here in Spain Toonami was a section un cartoon network, and Shaman King was aired there.
Shinzo was only in Fox Kids, ah the memories
I loved shaman king but it was over my head at the time
wait....did she say dragon ball z was "very monster of the week"?
what? this is the show that had multiple episode spanning fights constantly. how is that monster of the week?
I mean, aside from how long it is episodically, when you go from Giant Apes to Super Sentai Aliens to Gender Ambiguous Ridley Scott Tributes to Robot Teenagers to Bugman That Drinks People to Wizards to Demons and end it off with multiple Bubblegum Diaper Wearing Death Children..... yeah, Monster Of The Week isnt tooooooo stretched out.
monster of the week is a different villain/challenger/monster every week (save for a few instances where it takes 2 or more episodes a piece. dbz is absolutely NOT that. there's like 4 major arcs and while there's far more than a handful of bad guys, most aren't just introduced to be killed in the same episode and if they were, its because they were fodder.
skeletr wnt smash Clearly you never actually saw the entire show. DBZ was based on sagas headlined by major villains, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, and Buu, all leading to final epic battles. If you think it was ‘monster of the week’ it’s because you were too busy watching Sailor Moon instead.
Yeah that was an odd comment. DBZ is opposite of that, for better or for worse.
Namek was very monster of the week, so I get the comment
Hearing someone call DBZ "Monster of the week" in any capacity is painful. DBZ is about as far from "Monster of the week" as you can get.
Surprised not only Zoids not being mentioned.
But Megas XLR a show that was pretty much a parody of EVERYTHING toonami was showing at the time and it was awesome.
You’ve gotta find first gear in your giant robot car!
Needed Zoids and Outlaw star instead of Ben 10 and that shit batman
The lack of Zoids is shocking it was on at the same time as the Cell/Buu arc on DBZ and Sailor Moon Super S, and Tenchi Muyo.
@@minority86 well come on now. Why would outlaw star get mentioned when they can overshadow it with cowboy bebop like reality did!
@@minority86 that's the other thing; Ben ten (the original series) was never on toonami, it originally aired on saturday mornings with a new episode. Megas XLR should've taken that spot
"I'm Malcom."
Best line in this review.
That and Critic's well placed Simpsons reference.
Malcolm would be the worst Stig ever. (To be read in the voice of nerd from Simpsons)
Mine favorite was "how dare you boy?!"
Yeah. :D
*One more thing!*
Jackie Chan was awesome!
One more thing!
I and everyone else totally read that either out loud in Uncle's voice or heard him in their heads.

Ok
I’ll admit
That gave me the right kind of shivers of old school callback.
No mention of how Justice League was part of the bigger DCAU, connecting to Batman TAS and much more?
The connection was admittedly a bit less tied in than with JLU and superman if I recall.
I didn't even have to watch the video to give it a thumbs up. It was Toonami!
DBZ, Sailor Moon, Rurouni Kenshin, Ronin Warriors, Zoids, Gundam, Tenchi Muyo, Inuyasha, Outlaw Star! My childho... my current life still really.
Good God I had an amazing childhood! Thank u toonami
Johnny Quest i swear that was a figment of my imagination until I got older and started having visions of matrix grid-like mountains in an intro.. then I started to remember ...
I'm 100% convinced that Dunk-A-Roos salute wasn't even scripted, and they all just simultaneously broke character at the same time.
They didn't even mention the Toonami subplot with Tom's ship getting destroyed
honestly loved that part i thought tom was dead
Never forgot that, so weird that Tom died.
Or even Peter Cullin's amazing and epic promos. He made the shows that much better
No Swayzak! He was the BEST!
@@MarthaRoseQuartz I admired him as a little girl. Still pissed he didn't show up again after that, but I _was_ happy when he made that cameo in the Rez review.
I started watching Toonami with Moltar, before Tom!
Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z were my first anime’s I ever watched!
And I remember Reboot!
I feel so old!
I met Steve Blum, the voice of Tom himself!
You're not the only one who feels old I remember the beginning of Toonami as well!
He was also the voice of Spike from Cowboy Beebop.
And Guilmon in Digimon Tamers and Leeron in Gurren Lagann. And probably someone in Bleach. And Amon in Korra.
lain iwakura those guys too! And voice of Shoe from Box Trolls
GTS: Great Teacher Scathach I gotta watch my anime more
HOLD ON A MINUTE!!!
Are you implying that you DON'T like Jackie Chan Adventures?
HOW DARE!!
;c
Alurax shall I get the weapons and talismans for some “teaching”?
I personally preferred Xiaolin Showdown, especially the earlier one, but JCA had Uncle who was fucking epic at comedy without trying.
I don't think I ever watched JCA on Toonami. I remember watching it on WB Kids
Better than dbz at least
