Dragon Ball Z was aired on Toonami on Cartoon Network at 5pm est. While WCW Monday Nitro aired on TNT at around 8:58 pm and WWF Raw is War aired on the USA Network at 9:00pm every Monday nights during the Monday Night Wars. So of course you can watch it the exact same day.

As a 90's kid myself, growing up right around the time that Cartoon Network was created, I really appreciate that content like this exists. I always wondered about how the legendary network came to be and the voices, musicians, and talent behind many of the old 90's releases. I truly miss this era of anime, having grown up with it myself. Thank you for providing this content. This was well worth watching all the way through.

I remember when I first saw the show- I was only 6 and I was seeing Goku versus Full Power Freeza. I was so hooked that- in the years following I would become such a big nerd of it. Problem is- being a child can also catch up with your attention span. So I grew up- not watching DB DBZ or DBGT until the late Highschool years, when I remembered Vegeta's Super Saiyan track done by Bruce Falconer. After that- it resparked my love in Dragon Ball, and is now STILL one of my alltime favorite animes and shows.
    All because of Toonami...

Thank you for this. I have very vague memories of watching Z on toonami (I'm only 16) but I remember how it felt like each episode was a movie, the most lasting memory I have of toonami is Goku flying into Piccolo Jr. to win the budokai. My introduction to being a hardcore fan was watching nicktoon's kai and then watching the uncut blu rays but I still look back and think I had the privilege of watching the greatest shonen manga/anime of all time in it's fullest edition.

Tiffany Panton it’s ok I guess but it’s nowhere near the level of cartoons I watched when I was younger.... in the 90s growing up there was the boomerang cartoons ie Jetsons Tom & Jerry Smurfs etc on xmas they would marathon the xmas episodes of those shows for 3 days, then of course toonami but you also had Cow & Chicken, KND, Power Puff Girls Johnny Bravo, Ed, Edd & Eddy that are now considered pure classics I watch some of the cartoons now & it’s too kiddish like they being safe with those shows, growing up cartoons were more edgier now it’s more goofy than funny in my opinion which why I think my son watches more of the older stuff that came out when I was younger compared to stuff they show now

Man this video really made my day! Thanks for the history lesson. I remember in the summer of 1996 seeing Dragonball Z as a snot nose little 7 year old on a Saturday morning. Then my older brother got me hooked on it in November 1998 and the rest is history. I also remember getting to the episode when Goku landed on planet Namek twice and on the second time right after they showed those movies each Friday right after and finally in the late summer early fall of 1999 funimation took over and we could continue forward. I moved from the states to Japan in 2013 and I tell my wife all the time if I had lived there when I was a kid my head would have exploded lol.

I recall liking Ocean Dub for The World Strongest a lot. I remember loving the Kaioken x3 scene especially with its editing. The roaring “POWER UP!!!” got me goosebumps.

The first three movies for the Ocean Dub, from what I've heard and seen myself, were amazing. The Funimation dub was built up from the Ocean version anyway, so it's far from Big Green-tier despite what bandwagoners would say.

    • @SPARDA3g
      @SPARDA3g 7 років тому

Pure Rage Agreed. Truth be told, I was sort of like that a long time ago, but I began to appreciate the other dub as well, rather act like I always detested it. Maybe the censorship but it has to be done for the audience, so can’t argue against that.. Robot. reporters in helicopters or something like that. Good times.

I realize this is old video but I had to say well done. I’m 45 and just hearing those voices and the stories of how and when this whole dbz uprising was fascinating and a huge nostalgia trip for me. I was one that drove 45 minutes to a little video store that would rent vhs recorded episodes that weren’t even close to be released here, and it was in Japanese with no subtitles. It didn’t matter my buddy and I just wanted to know what happened next in Dragonball. Not sure how this dude got these tapes but I didn’t care. I turned all my friends intro dbz nerds and had them all asking and waiting when the next videos were coming out. It became a big get together, light up some green, and watch Dragonball from the future. Thanks man for the memories Geekdom.

Got a tear in my eye man. My dad couldn’t get us Cable but one of my cousins made me watch DBZ in his house one day - I’ll never forget being hooked from the first second. It was during the Babidi’s spaceship episodes. Then later on when my dad was getting the cable hooked up, I was finally able to watch it at MY house after school at 4pm CT. I would run home so I could see it. I would be eating from the kitchen and watching the TV all the way in the living room. First episode I watched at my house, Chi Chi got turned into an egg 😭 watched Vegeta opening an episode as nothing but a deceased stone figure. Watched Super Saiyan 3. Watched the final episode.
13 billion years and I was lucky enough to be born on earth to see the ending of DBZ in its day - April 7th, 2003 is a holiday for me. Thanks Geekdom for the recap to my childhood.

Ocean dub was the best in terms of voice acting. I believe the voice actors nailed the reactions along with the sound effects. From there I went to fan subs on vhs and skipped toonami all together.

Shit, I remember when it was on random syndicated channels with those old saban eyecatches and the ocean dub. It came on 7:30 am on sunday morning on the WB. Watched it once when I was 9 (second episode where Piccolo and Goku fight Nappa) and it blew my mind. Would wake up each sunday early just to watch, I was so hooked.
I also remember my sister found out about it and started demanding we watch flintstones instead. She'd wake up deliberately so she could force me to watch flintstones instead. I was up to when the saiyans got to earth and were about to fight the z fighters. One episode per week. Months of build up, just so we could watch flintstones instead.
    Thanks sis.

Do you happen to remember a block of cartoons called "Japanimation?" My memory is super hazy but from what I remember, DBZ kept bouncing around to different channels. I remember different blocks. One where Eagle Riders came on before DBZ, another where DBZ was followed by Masked Rider or something like that. And another where DBZ was followed by a show called S Club 7. This was such a big influence on me that I now speak Japanese and I even have a UA-cam channel dedicated to cosplay videos. I just wish I could remember more about that "Japanimation" block because I think they had random facts about Japan that peaked my curiosity but I just can't remember...

This was incredible to watch. Thank you for this, I watched the original Dragon Ball when I was 7. I was so excited to see Dragon Ball Z on WB when I was 9, but got so tired of the limited episode run from the first 2 seasons on Toonami. I also remember renting the uncensored Tree of Might from the ghetto video store.
I love the nostalgia, a nice trip down memory lane. Again, thank you.

      Mexicans, French & Brazilians.
To this day they are the countries with the most hardcore fanbase outside of japan.
Hell, the original DBZ still runs on national TV there. Goku is more recognizable than Mickey Mouse or Mario there.
It also kinda explains why they hate dubs that took more liberties and modified music and intros, preferring the original Japanese score instead.

I own all of Dragon Ball, Z and GT on DVD and watched them all in English, but hearing your recommendations to watch the series in it's original Japanese audio and subtitles, I sat down this year and did so. It was amazing to see the differences in from the original compared to the Funimation Dub and have to say I enjoyed it very much, thank you for the recommendation!

I think it would end around when freza would fight goku and then it would start over. But i would watch some episodes on video tapes in Japanese from some friends and then when i got older i finally had cable to watch it on cartoon network.
