The villain part annoyed me the most about the new film. I remember that when I watched it, I just felt this gnawing sensation that something was off, and that it wasn't truly Marry Poppins. I only understood why in animated section with the wolf. I just suddenly thought to myself, "Wait! This is an evil guy! There's a villain! Marry Poppins doesn't have villains! To quote another good “version” of Mary Poppins (aka Nanny McPhee): When you need me, but do not want me, I must stay. When you want me, but do not need me, I must go.
Interestingly enough, supposedly Nanny McPhee was closer to what the author had originally envisioned Mary Poppins to be like...
I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers Nanny McPhee. I hope the critic does a review of it at some point.

I was hoping Nostalgia Chick would come back for a cameo. Oh well.
The great thing about the original bank scene is that as a kid, Michael’s point of view makes more sense, but as you grow up, you begin to see George’s point of view more. In the new one there is none of that.
Honestly, watching it again today, that line about "feed the birds and what do you get? Fat birds!" is a little bit cringe. Feed the birds and you get _dependent_ birds, who keep coming back and begging people for food because they don't know any way to feed themselves. And if you feed them enough, they breed and you get more and more dependent birds and they become a nuisance, because they get in the way and poop everywhere. As a general rule, anywhere in a city where there's any serious number of pigeons tends to be a pretty bad place to hang around.
It would be nice if the writers had come up with an alternative activity to spend the tuppence on that actually did some good.

Amelia Beckley Glad to here that you enjoyed the movie, I'll admit the film itself is not as phenomenal as people make it out to be, but I was mostly just talking about how Disney is just controlling the media these days
I mean don't get me wrong I love Disney but it's becoming more and more obvious that they're making movies just to push their political agendas and are especially using them to influence the younger viewers and I'm not saying it's wrong to teach children that times and ideas are changing but when it gets in the way of the movies overall story, it's only going to result an just a plain movie that parents will mostly use to distract there kids instead of it being a movie where kids will actually be invested in

Hi, Disney? I know you'll never read this, but there are hundreds of fairy tales that haven't been adapted yet. Can you make movies about those? I like your movies about fairy tales. They're nice and pretty and they make me feel good and most of the better movies you've made recently have been about fairy tales. Like Frozen! Frozen was okay, I guess. But there are hundreds more fairy tales you could adapt into stories, so you would literally never run out. Please. I don't think you're as good at this as you think you are.

Kyle Morello I totally respect your opinion, I just consider myself an old soul and kind of a purist when it comes to films haha! Some remakes might be good, or continuations like the movie Christopher Robin, but I think if the original was received well in its time or perfect the way it was, it doesn’t need a remake(and Disney is definitely not the only franchise doing this). I had a long conversation with my friend about this and we agreed that there are some Disney remakes or continuations that are worth doing, such as two of my favorites The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Great Mouse Detective. Some of their new movies have been good like Moana, but quite recently I just don’t think they hold a candle to the originals.

I swear this is way superior to those many cash-grab remakes of Disney classic that I watch just once for the sake of nostalgia and then I'm like: "Nope! Back to the originals and never watching these live action remakes again."
I don't know if I can make you see the difference, but I can feel it.
"Hey, Mary Poppins 2.HO..."
Best pun ever!!!
I friggin love that first scene with the Poppins' meeting each other. Poppins 2.0 is so fittingly menacing.
“HEYA GEORGIE!”
That Pennywise joke was too good lol
11:10 for replay value xD
Pennywise vs Mary Poppins, I'm so down for that...
@FearlessAstridHofferson yep, so Autumn court fae vs Spring court. Both are terrifying inhuman monsters that feed off humanity, you just might survive one of them. XD
@FearlessAstridHofferson indeed.
I can’t wait for IT Chapter 3 vs Mary Poppins
19:36 THIS! I am really sick and tired of every single Disney movie being cgi now because it's cheaper to do. I miss these lovingly crafted masterpieces so much because they had far more heart in them and you could feel the artists in them. I don't think they have to do it every movie they make but every other movie they should go back to, well, actually being Walt Disney pictures :(
I also thought the Angela Lansbury cameo at the end was clearly reserved for Julie Andrews, but she wasn’t available, so they got ms Lansbury, but mrs Lovett in a Mary Poppins movie is hilarious.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention how standardly grey it looks. Saturation level to the minimum, while obviously recorded colourfully
Julio Toboso García, That's such a great description of what many recent movies look like.
The staff obviously put a lot of effort into making the costumes and sets look vibrant and colorful, but then when it comes to the editing room they end up draining much of the life and color from the movie.
Have you seen the video essay "Why do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly" by Patrick Willems? He talks about how following the switch from film cameras to digital cameras, a lot of movies have become pretty dull to look at.
It's just so clashing with the complexity of the environment and special effects. They managed to make CGI, something usually used to make grand and imaginative things, feel bland and tasteless
They think it will give them a professional look when all it does is mute everything, I am far more likely to sleep through one of these movies and it usually indicates that there is no grabbing storyline
It is great Britain
Poppins 2.0: the power of my snappy fingers
Original Mary poppins: on your left
Mary Poppins was my favorite movie as a kid. I even dressed up as her for Halloween. My mom made my costume for me.
on a side note "Saving Mr.Banks" utterly destroyed my emotions. That movie is waaaaaay too relatable for me... left me sobbing for days.
Critic: You have no idea what children want!
Mary 2.0: We are Disney, we TELL them what they want.
OMG that hit hard!! ...because it's true
Not in my home, will that be the case.

The villain bugged me when I saw this at the theater, especially at the end...because the head banker found his happy place or whatever in the original. Here they just shafted him.

If they do make a second one
I want something similar to the original idea of nick making a big amusement park for predators and ditching the collars that have to wear.
Like a underground spot for predators and nick has to hide it from judy
That's just about it, if it's just some sorry ass shit I'll riot
@@kanati1133 I just think that Disney should finally make something original again. Y'now, not a remake, not a sequel, an original idea. I live in hope.
@@tomascaldon1332 Disney is kinda what happened to Pixar (plus Google, but that is something different). Some of the creators still try to be creative but they get silenced because that's not what the big crowd wants/not as easy to do as the formula, and why should they care? They got the brand recognition already. They at most care if it is something new to show how great it is to start a franchise/Disney+ (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series). I'm not saying that the franchises/Disney+ will suck after they tried establishing they won't, but I am also not saying Disney cares enough. As for Pixar, they are still trying original stuff, some being good and some absolute garbage like A Good Dinosaur, and alot of sequels, some being okay and (Atleast for me, many think the following movie is good) some absolute garbage like Toy Story 4.
TL;DR Disney gone corporate.
No!!! It was evil!!! EVIL!!!!!!!!!
The scene in Guardians 2 of Yondu saying, "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!" was more faithful to the original than this high budget horseshit.
M M you got that right.
It wasn't but ok.
I would have bought Yondu as Mary Poppins... XD
2:53 when I Meet Mary Poppins.
Honestly, disney shouldve just left mary poppins alone, it was and still is a perfect movie. And one of the things I hate is when people take a show or movie and do what people like NC call a requel, a reboot and a sequel at the same time, for me you can only have one or the other, not have a character from the first film be older having us think it's a sequel, but then redo scenes play by play as if it's a complete reboot of the first film, it confuses people
"Honey badger dont give a shit"
Caught me off guard, now ive got tears in my eyes 😂
That opening with poppins 2.0 is terrifyingly accurate.

Disney isn’t actually replacing anything like in the opening. You just wanna be part of something that makes you some underdog, like all the others who call these things “terrifying” when there are bigger atrocities across the globe.
@@WhaleManMan Jesus Christ, this is a joke. Why the hell are you getting so butthurt
@@logicaloverdrive8197 I'm not. Just pointing out that you are wasting your time.
The truth is in a few years this film will be just another film while the original will still be a beloved classic
I just watched Marry Poppins Returns and like most the people here I have strong nostalgia connected to the original movie. So I was kinda scared to watch the reboot, after all I didn't know if they'd just try to make it modern. When the movie started and we got to "Can you imagine that" I felt my heart sink because I absolutely LOVE the 2D animation in the original. It's just super unique and totally holds up for me. So I thought all the magical parts were probably gonna be animated like that but Emily Blunt did such a great job as Mary Poppins and the songs had me bawling in nostalgia so I kept going. When the villain arc got stronger I really felt put off. I hadn't seen the original in a while but something didn't feel right about the fact that there was a villain. I remember having the original movie as a save zone as a child, this didn't make sense. And even though I've finished the movie and will totally re-watch it a lot, I definitely feel like it was unnecessary af. It takes me out of the Mary Poppins feel (just like some of the modern stunts and as I said CGI). I'm personally really glad that they kind of hit a lot of the same notes from the original. I think it's great if you already have established nostalgia with Mary Poppins! It definitely hits harder when you're a teenager or adult watching it. I also really love the songs.
When the original Mary Poppins looks in the mirror and her reflection speaks its fun and whimsical. When the reboot one does it, it's creepy and off-putting...that's some Oculus shit going on.
Well, somone has to be given a spoonful of sugar...
In reality, both movie were oculus. Still the first one holds up better for me.
Well, if we’re gonna get technical the actual Mary Poppins from the books was never fun or whimsical.
It’s s very obvious sequel
