Iron Maiden’s version of Alfred Lord Tennyson “The Charge of the Light Brigade”. “Ours not to reason why. Ours but to do or die. Into the valley of death rode the 600.” Mandatory reading for British students
Thanks for posting this. Many people don't know that this song was based off a poem about the Crimea War between Britain and Russia. It's an awsome poem and song.
Bruce oftern starts the song by quoting that bit of the poem, too. "Into the valley of Death rode the six hundred. Cannon to the right of them, cannon to the left of them, volleyed and thundered: THE TROOPER!" 🤘🤘🤘
“Ours is not to make reply, ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die.” This is supposedly the answer given to a Lieutenant begging his superior officer to call off the charge that was clearly suicidal (though it was likely added later as an embellishment). The Crimean War started over trade routes, essentially. The light brigade was an obsolete unit of cavalry who misunderstood an order given to them. They were meant to scout in some hills to locate artillery positions, but confusion about their orders led them into a killing field in front of the guns they were meant to scout. It would be Britain’s greatest military blunder until Gallipoli in WWI. The only thing cooler than metal is history! Keep rockin dude!

For hundreds of years the biggest weapon on the field of battle was the armored knight on a horse. A close second was the longbow. And in this battle on one side you had men on horses, and on the other you had entrenched men with guns. The men with guns obliterated the men on horse. And this presaged how WWI would be fought.

So many of their songs have historical references. The stories some of them tell is delivered by their sonic perfection both vocally and instrumentally. Their music transcends normal songs.
In the book World War Z, "The Battle of Hope. The battle itself lasted for hours, from one day through the night and then to dawn the next morning. Sound speakers played the song "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden loudly to lure zombies from all across the countryside via the chain swarm effect; the moans of these zombies attracted more zombies, and so on, until all of the zombies from a large swath of the region were descending on Hope. The music served the secondary purpose of getting the solders "pumped" and ready for battle, increasing morale (for the troops who liked "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden)."

The Trooper is based on the novel taught in all public middle/high school English classes, "The Charge Of The Light Brigade". It was a tiny war between the British Empire and the Russian Empire in the mid 19th century. The British Empire tried to seize the Crimea peninsula out of Russian hands because it sat on the Black Sea, the only ice free year around port the Russians occupied at the time. The British had the best skilled, trained, and armed soldiers in the world and even though the Russian's were poorly armed and trained they had the shear man power to repel the British invasion and won the tiny little war.
bro, you are absolutely rite this band is amazing, and you've only scratched the surface, you really gotta check out some more do another block because this was awesome, but there's so many more iron Maiden songs out there that you would just lose your mind on

I love this song so much, he touched on it near the end but the song is about the charge of the light brigade in the Crimean War (1853-1856) in where the British light brigade was mistakenly ordered to charge into the middle of the Russian defensive lines instead of their actual target, an exposed flank. The men knew that it was a death sentence, a virtual suicide mission that was likely to result in complete annihilation but chose to follow through with the orders as it wasn’t a soldier’s duty to question orders, it was their duty to follow them to the letter. It was one of the greatest military blunders in the history of the British empire, it was immortalized in the poem “the charge of the light brigade” I’d highly recommend giving it a read, it’s not too long and it really knocks the situation home.
You are a likeable dude and funny too. Your observations are astute and you understand music , I can see that clearly. So many genres have great music! Hallelujah !

MORE IRON MAIDEN! Paschendale, The Empire of the Clouds, The Clansman, Aces High, Flight of Icarus................just getting started!!! Master songwriters.
Great reaction mate. Try Maiden's Passchendale, another classic about the futility of war.
I play this song repeatedly and loudly every October 25th. Also Iced Earth's "Declaration Day" on July 4, and Tarja's "Ave Maria" on Christmas Eve. Neighbors think I'm crazy. And that's a good thing.
Mate, love watching you react to Maiden. Reminds me of how I felt first hearing them when I was about 10 years old (37 years ago). Keep listening, keep enjoying. Peace from Australia.
Hell, yeah, bro finally got to the goat. 👍👍👍
Rime of the ancient mariner Should be another iron maiden song.
One of my favorite songs of all time!!!
He’s soooo hooked now !!!
Major IRON MAIDEN FANBOY!!!
Liked and subscribed this is the ultimate galloping riff metal song.keep the great videos coming
This is from my favorite Iron Maiden album "Piece of Mind". Great memories of my friends and I listening to this and just being blown away.
Great reaction, Jamel. I'm not an Iron Maiden fan but I absolutely love this song. The "gallop" of the bass and the drum beat is awesome and the dual guitars just add to the epicness of this song. Me and my guitar teacher tried to play the opening one time but we were terrible (mainly cos of me) but we had fun trying.
Just saw them live in Vegas 2 months ago. Still as good as ever.
REAL MUSICIANS at their finest !!
I'm loving your choices in tracks and bands you're reacting to. :)
The British had the best skilled, trained, and armed soldiers in the world and even though the Russian's were poorly armed and trained they had the shear man power to repel the British invasion and won the tiny little war.
bro, you are absolutely rite this band is amazing, and you've only scratched the surface, you really gotta check out some more do another block because this was awesome, but there's so many more iron Maiden songs out there that you would just lose your mind on
Rhyme of the ancient mariner! Long story you’ll love.
As a hood 90's kid, my CD player stayed spinning the wildest shit, my backpack had Maiden, tupac, biggie, pink floyd, slayer, metallica, pantera, and led zeppelin discs. And ain't shit changed almost 40 years old and still listening to these same damn records. CLASSICS never die.
Steve Harris and Bruce Dickinson we’re both avid readers as you can see in the lyrics of many of the songs were inspired by English literature. Rush is similar Neal Peart writes most of the bands lyrics inspired from English American and modern lit. “Tom Sawyer”
Love how with older maiden you can tell whether its Dave or adrian playing each solo just by listening. Amazing talented band
Steve Harris’ bass is like the thundering hoof beats of the four horsemen of the apocalypse!’
A LOT of great tunes in their catalog for the workout playlist! 😉🤘🏼😎
Trooper is a jam for sure I like the duellists, back in the village, 22 acacia avenue, die with your boots on just to name a few.
The moment you realize that Iron Maiden is a Heavy Metal history lesson.!!!!!!!
One of my all time favorites!
Saw them in August and all these years later they still sound this tight
