I met Jesse Owens a month before he died. I was in Cincinnati in 1979 for a computer competition. After the convention, I was waiting in line to check out of the hotel. There was an elderly gentleman in front of me. I chatted with him for about 15 mins before he got to the desk .When he got to the desk, the person at the desk asked him. "Mr Owens, how was your stay?" I looked at him and asked... Mr Owens, are you the "Jesse Owens"? He simply answered, "Yes". I congratulated him on what he did in the 1932 Olympics. He told me thanks, and walked away. I will never forget that moment.

From what I understand, the Olympic committee told Hitler he was to either greet all the winners or none of them; he chose to leave early. Unfortunately, when JO and JR returned home, our country didn't treat them with the respect they deserved, but they're still legends and will always be a part of our history. They made Hitler's "superior race" theory look as lame as it was.

sorry for the long comment but hope this helps, it's from a biography of Jesse Owens
One popular tale that arose from Owens’s victories was that of the “snub,” the notion that Hitler refused to shake hands with Owens because he was an African American. In truth, by the second day of competition, when Owens won the 100-metre final, Hitler had decided to no longer publicly congratulate any of the athletes. The previous day the International Olympic Committee president, angry that Hitler had publicly congratulated only a few German and Finnish winners before leaving the stadium after the German competitors were eliminated from the day’s final event, insisted that the German chancellor congratulate all or none of the victors. Unaware of the situation, American papers reported the “snub,” and the myth grew over the years.

My Dad ran track and field back in the late 50's, his event was 120 yd high hurdles and 180 low hurdles. At State he ran a 15.0 for the 120 high hurdles but lost by a tenth of a second, however in the 180 yd low's he placed first with a 19.9. Not bad for a white boy from the Chicago burbs.

In fact, Owens stayed at the best hotels in Germany with all the other white athletes at a time when the US still had white only hotels and colored motels. When Owens was walking past Hitler's box, they waved at each other. Owens received a signed framed photo of Hitler (all the athletes got them). The German crowds loved Owens and cheered him wildly. Owens himself said he had never received such applause before or since. When movie producer, Leni Riefenstahl, was putting a documentary of the Olympics together, she included footage of Owens winning his events. Goebbels wanted it removed. She complained to Hitler and Hitler ordered Goebbels to leave it in. By contrast, FDR and the US as a whole ignored Owens success at the Olympics. Had nothing to say about it. Truman did likewise. Not until Eisenhower did a president finally acknowledge Owens's performance. No need to look to Nazi Germany for racism. We got plenty of it here and it ain't goin' nowhere.

Owens returned to New York City for a ticker tape parade. When he arrived to his hotel he had to take a freight elevator as the regular elevator was white only. Hitler sent him a gold plaque commemorating his victory. FDR wouldn't even shake his hand.

I use to run track in high school and I got what you were saying about the divide a couple minutes in. I ran sprint & long distance and long distance was majority white, sprint was majority black. Then the races in the middle like the 400 that is long for sprint but short for long distance were pretty evenly divided & mixed up. But track is such a unifying sport so it’s never really talked about when you’re at events. Not as much judgement in track as in other sports. I did notice that much.

There are sports like running where black people are better in general and there are other sports like strongman contests or weightlifting where white people are better or ping pong where asians are better etc..You can't say that someone particular is better in everything because there are many different fields and varieties..But yeah in general it seems that black people do better in activities that require good lower body strength and white people do better in activities that require good upper body strength..Of course this is not always the case and there are exceptions also.

    1) You're too young to remember "Jimmy the Greek" (real name Jimmy Snyder). He got fired in 1988 from his job on TV talking about the NFL for saying that it's because of breeding practices during slavery that so many African-Americans are superior athletes.
    2) You're absolutely right about track athletes. At the Olympics, most of the white people who win medals run middle or long distance races. As a white guy, I say "so what?" I just root for the Americans. It's the people who think this is a problem and try to figure out why that say stupid things or have hate in their hearts. On the other hand, as Bill Burr said, the "good" people can become so afraid of saying the wrong thing that they deny what is obviously true.
