Best line: The Doctor "No arm in trying." to Davros after his hand has been shot off. Also the moment Davros is removed and the Doctor makes to shake his hand, Terry manages to portray a D'oh! moment in all that get-up.

The Knights of Oberon intrigue me... particularly how Saward writes them up in the novelization as a kind of multi-species evil thumping task force of genetically enhanced badasses. All the times Davros offered the Doctor command of an army of modified Dalek peacekeepers to set the universe to rights? The Knights are pretty much it and all they have to do with the Doctor is beating the shit out of him and threatening to kill him.

I really like this story. It's dark and spooky. My one real complaint is that the Doctor is a bit side lined, I haven't watched any more of this era, but I have watched Clever Sick Films' series of documentarys (check out his channel! It's great) on his Colin Baker era, he said about how Eric Saward arguably sabotaged the show and how his stories had the Doctor doing pretty much nothing. The Doctor does almost nothing to advance the story in this episode, damn shame because Colin Baker can do great work, his "Power mad conspirators" speech in Trial of A Time Lord is brilliantly acted. In short, good story, I like how they make the Daleks feel threatening, as they should do, by having a large cast, it makes room for the Daleks to have more kills, it literally takes place in a funeral home.

Anyone else notice Davros little microphone is on the opposite side to what it was in 'Genesis', 'Destiny' and 'Resurrection', also the red wires that are normally attached to his blue eye, are attached to his head brace instead. if you listen to the 'Dr.Who' audio 'The Davros Mission', it was the grey Skaro Daleks themselves who replaced his hand that was shot off with a robotic hand, (the robotic hand was first seen in 'The Stolen Earth').

I was a teenager when this and Resurrection came out. There's a host of guests stars in these episodes that you've missed - stuntcasting was a feature of the JNT DW era. The DJ is Alexei Sayle who was a well known stand-up comedian, William Gaunt was concurrently starring in a BBC sitcom called "No Place like Home" as a middle-aged dad - so to see him here as a ruthless is contrast and a half. Eleanor Bron (Kara) had a quick appeared in 1979's City of Death.

Having just watched Resurrection of the Daleks and this recently, I also recommend Big Finish fans listening to Davros (I think it's Main Range 48) between the two stories. I think it helps bridge the gap in Davros' state of mind gives context to some of his plans/choices in this episode when he is shown issues facing the galaxy through Space Capitalism. It's free on Spotify if anyone wants to listen to it although I do recommend listening to it on Premium.

I also relistened to The Davros Mission as a continuation of the Daleks taking Davros back to Skaro (and yes, they give reasons for him being put on trial beyond "He is not a Dalek" and based it on his treachery from Resurrection)... I don't recommend it as much.

Don't know if you've listened to the "I Davros" audio series, but they write it so the "trial" the daleks refer to is more a trial in the sense of a test rather than legal. Essentially after everything he has done which the daleks consider to be crimes against them they are unsure if his continued existance is a benefit or detriment to the daleks cause and so are trying to determine if he is still useful enough to keep around.

Like a lot of season 22, this story has some issues when it comes to storytelling in a 45-minute episode. A large part of part one is spent with the Doctor and Peri journeying to the scene of whatever conflict is taking place. In other stories these are endless scenes in the TARDIS, but here it's them walking into the trap Davros has set (I guess that is all part of his plan)
Yes, it's grim as all get out. It was probably one of the final straws for Michael Grade to take the show off the air as he did....well, that and the Two Doctors. But yet, I still like it.

Is it just me or are the Dalek voices a bit off in this story? Like they have a cold?

They don't really have much modulation on their voices this time around. It is just pure voice performance from Roy Skelton and Royce Mills.

Human based Daleks have a more human voice, the gray Kaled mutant Daleks should have had a traditional Dalek voice.

This is a good Davros story but the Daleks are kinda an afterthought. But with a story and setting this bonkers I really don't care. Easily one of Six's best TV stories and proof that Eric Saward could reach Holmes levels of crazy and bizarre.

Everything about this story was head and shoulders above so much of the rest of the era. The atmosphere, production values, characters, strong cast, setting and gory idea etc were way better than much of DW of the time.

For as little as he does in it do do like Colin Baker a lot in this tale. It's easy to see how it would be story edited to make it more modern and what you would over lap. It all starts with the death trap. It should have been real and while Davros could plan for the Doctor he wouldn't plan for Peri, her ignorance of the daleks would give her separation from the Doctor an intresting edge. The doctor having survived because of the over complicated mechanism of of the trap would end up being mistaken for the Assassin who I feel is given far too much screen time. He is centred in the story in a huge way, having the doctor mistaken for the assassin in the second half because Davros has allready killed the assassin would give him some fun play with the squire as they push to discover the reason for the assassins death while peri teams up with the DJ to solve the same crime from the other direction.
