Funny story about Terry Molloy! I was at Whofest 3 in Texas and i was walking by a booth and I was greeted by this very kind enthusiastic old man. He asked if i would like to buy a print of davros. I thought that i would also have to go elsewhere to get him to sign it. I was so oblivious! I made the remark, "In my opinion Terry Molloy is the BEST davros." And then a VERY familiar voice retorted, "You know I think you are probably right." Then it clicked. I was so excited! I talked to him for about 8 minutes about how much i loved his performances, and when it came tim to finally pay for the signed print, i was $3 short. And Terry Molloy said, "It's ok, i'll give you an exclusive fan discount!" Best interaction with a celebrity EVER. I still have that print. It reads "AH! JEREMY... EXTERMINATE THE DOCTOR!!!"
That’s really cool. A few years ago I was at San Francisco comic con where Matt Smith was doing photo ops and autographs. Because I have a muscular disability I have a really hard time waiting in long lines. But when it was my turn to get the photo I got the photo said thank you and went on with my day. When I went to go pick up my print of the photo it didn’t show up properly. So I went back to the line where the photo ops were and got a second one. What I like about this story is they were wrapping up and Matt could have easily said no to a second shot as Bonnie Wright needed the space for her photo op. But he was totally accommodating and nice.
I'm gonna say it. I like the dalek trooper uniforms. If the eyestak on them is the dalek equivalent of a body cam, they make sense as an intermediate step between kaeld officer an dalek.

I know it’s for a commercial as a way of increasing sales, but could you just imagine the Time Lords literally just hiding a message for the Doctor in packages of Weetabix? Is it their way of relaying secret messages during the Time War like how in radio communications they would use code words so that the enemy couldn’t gain info? God I’m overthinking again.
I think the story gives a reason for why the troopers are there. Basically there aren't too many Daleks left because of the Movellan virus, so the Daleks have been forced to use clones to boost their numbers. As well as that, I guess the troopers can handle the Movellan virus safely, so the fact they've got a stockpile of the virus stored on Earth isn't really a plot hole, because the Daleks aren't actually on Earth, but have agents there. Presumably they were left there by the Movellans at somepoint and the Dalek clone duplicates are collecting these in order to destroy them all safely at a point before the Dalek invasion.

I used to have several ideas about Stein, and his confusing story. I think I've found a feasible explanation. When Lytton's men were duplicated, Stein was selected to be a further lure for the Doctor's capture. As well as his original memories, and his eventual conditioning, he was given false memories so as to create a backstory as one of the many captures prisoners. The Daleks were able to monitor the Doctor's progress through Stein, and they would guide Stein's actions through some form of subconscious suggestions, eventually leading him to travel in the TARDIS to the Dalek ship. As soon as he arrived, the Daleks deactivated his false memories and reactivated his Dalek conditioning, hence his striking change of character when he leaves the TARDIS. As for how the DALEKS could monitor Stein from inside the TARDIS and on Earth, I don't know, but it's just an idea I had.
This makes sense. Even in Nu-Who Dalek agensts don't know they're working for the Daleks until activated. Stein doesn't consciously know he was working for the Daleks until he reaches the ship. Before then I imagine the programming was just prodding him in the right direction here and there to gain the Doctor's trust. Stein was almost certainly also the unwitting reason the escaped prisoners were tracked by Lytton's mercenaries and gunned down. If the story is all based on a theme of failure, then Stein may actually be about the only figure in it who achieves a victory. He defeats his own Dalek conditioning, chooses the right side, and destroys the Dalek taskforce - taking no small amount of revenge for what they did to him.
In terms of elapsed time, Jamie (and Sarah Jane Smith) spent three years on the show, but Tegan stayed for four. In terms of episodes: Jamie (116), Sarah Jane (81), Barbara & Ian (78), Jo Grant (77), Tegan (65) NB: Classic Who only; I didn't count Lis Sladen's 4 episodes of Nu Who or Sarah Jane Adventures
@@ftumschk Tegan was only in it for 3 years...Logopolis was broadcast in March 81 and Resurrection of the Daleks was broadcast in Feb 84. Another way to look at it is 3 seasons bar 1 story. I had a proper crush on her growing up!! Haha
I'm looking forward to this one - if only to find out how depressing it really is. You make a strong case for it despite its apparent flaws, and it's interesting to see a generally nice Doctor get beaten down by the events unfolding around them; one wonders if 13 may suffer the same fate...
2:30 Stubagful: Let me remind you of a little decade called the 1980s which gave us 'gems' like Resurrection of the Daleks, "Agh, I can't stand the confusion in my mind!" Council of Geeks: Ah the 80s, I blame the cocaine. ua-cam.com/video/ZQlm23ZFvIQ/v-deo.html
This a personal favourite of mine, more because of nostalgia, admittedly (I had part 2 on video for years from when it was broadcast in '84). However, I wish it had been 3 x 45 minute episodes to flesh-out the plots better - it deserved it as there was some great ideas in it. Everyone is scheming in it apart from the Doctor and his companions who I feel are almost just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also, this is the story that scared the crap out of everyone in the BBC building when they blew up those doors on the station to reveal the daleks for the first time! :D
I'm constantly saying how much I would love to see Classic companions appear on Doctor Who again. And Tegan is right near the top of the list for me. Second only to Ace, and it's a close second. I would love to see how this experience with the Doctor changed her. What she's doing now, how she coped with the reason she left, and most importantly, how she would react if their paths crossed again. It could be a really compelling episode of New Who imo.
Thanks for the review; I only remember the Doctor threatening to shoot Davros and Tegan leaving in this show. Not quite a show I own. Kind of got tired of Davros returning over and over starting about with this story. Regarding favorite (favourite) Doctors, he's not been my favorite Doctor, but your summary of his character was very good, and I have an appreciation of the fact that PD found a new approach to the Doctor. My memories of if his era, however, are of a Doctor constantly overwhelmed by the circumstances and unable to do much of anything: "failure" may be the theme of this show, but it's also my memory of Doctor #5, unfortunately.
One of the goryiest episodes high body count . Ohhhhh lyton! So is it good that so many plots involved? Maybe no kinda . Exterminate exterminate that's basically the whole story and also a very gory story and the doctor also who is actually quite a good actor Peter Davison is actually pretty good in this story and I like the idea of a Dalek agents of the Roboman and the Dalek invasion of Earth basically if I would to rate this episode I would rate it a 7/10 keep the really good episodes up and I'm waiting to see Revelation and and all that good stuff bye
I had the biggest crush on Teagan as a kid, largely because of the outfit in this story. And so this story will always have a place on my nostalgia shelf.
Eric Saward and JNT have gone on record to say that they disliked this episode for a variety of reasons. With Peter Davison leaving the series, they needed to come up with a Dalek episode for his final season, a season which had been marred by a lot of stuff behind the scenes. A snap election caused production to be rushed on Warriors of the Deep, the airing clashed with the Winter Olympics forcing it to adopt a different airing format of two double length episodes, and the original director intended for the episode, Peter Grimwade, was also dropped after falling out with JNT because of an incident over dinner, being replaced with a director that hadn't worked on Doctor Who before. Plus, Saward watched everything Dalek before writing the story, but found the whole ordeal of research to be painful, save for Genesis of the Daleks, and didn't go into the project with the best of intentions. It was clear that no one was having a good time here.
This is a really good story, it addresses the dalek decline, uses davros well, has lots going on, sets up future stories and has lots of death with high stakes.
11:09. I mean at this point in the series the Daleks didn’t really go to Earth that often. There had only been two other Dalek stories where they attacked Earth (those being the Dalek invasion of Earth and Day of the Daleks)
Recently listened to the Audiobook on Audible, read by Molloy (With Dalek Voices by Briggs). I regretted it. They took one of my favourite Dalek stories & made it boring. * Before he even arrives on Earth in 1984, the Doctor knows the Daleks are involved, based on coding used in the Time Corridors controls. * Quite a lot of uninteresting exposition thrown in about minor characters. * Saward spent way too bloody long talking about all the fancy shit in the TARDIS. "There's a Private Cinema & a Restaurant with a Robot Chef- I DON'T F*CKING CARE! WE GET IT! THE TARDIS IS MASSIVE! SHUT UP AND GO BACK TO THE DALEKS!!!" … Ahem. Sorry. * Saward also kept bringing up the Terileptils for some reason. * The Supreme Dalek speaking like the Dalek Prime Minister. * The Grey Daleks having designations, like Alpha, Gamma, Delta & Epsilon. * Somehow, after leaving the TARDIS, Tegan gains metahuman abilities like dropping from London Bridge into a barge & not even getting a scratch.
I really like the story and it’s bleak tone, but I keep getting distracted by the weird lump on top of half of the dalek domes. What is that? Looks like a fault in the mould or something. It drives me crazy every time I see it, I want to climb through the screen with a handful of sandpaper 😂
I think that's why I liked EARTHSHOCK better than this story there was way to plots to follow. EARTHSHOCK plot was straight forward and easy to follow. If you have to much of plot or plots it makes story to confusing
You should do a ranking the doctors video afterwards as hearing your thoughts on why 5 is the best are very interesting. I’d also love an update on your top 10 stories of all time.
There are parts of this story that make me cringe. The opening scene for example. Davros is great and I like the white domes on the Dalek Supreme. Tegan leaving is sad at the end too. I love your critiques, it is like getting an early Christmas present.
I always thought of Resurrection of the Daleks as one of those middle-of-the-road (in terms of overall quality) Dalek stories alongside Planet of the Daleks and (sorry!) Asylum of the Daleks where it's flawed and either doesn't live up to its full potential or relies on contrivances, but I enjoy enough of the episode (the themes presented, the characters and their arcs, the atmosphere...) that I can't hate it. I think it's a good watch if you aren't in the mood for something amazing and don't want to subject yourself to something you hate. Also, Terry Molloy's Davros mask reminds me of Donald Trump's face, and that makes him all the more terrifying!
I think it works just as well in four parts as it does in two. I will give it credit that the cliffhangers for the four-part version at least feel like cliffhangers. Unlike the syndicated American version of the next year where the episodes are split up and the credits just start to roll whether there is any dramatic tension built up or not.
I’m not so why they couldn’t bring Roy Skelton back to voice the Daleks for this story, But if I have to guess two possible ways is they haven’t thought about him, or that Roy Skelton was too busy doing Zippy and George’s voice on Rainbow for Thames Television at the time, At least in the next story Revolution they got him back again as well as the last Dalek story of the classic series Remembrance.
Bumblebee-127 First of all my bad for the incorrect word, And second as I said in my other comment, Both Daleks in this story are played by Brain Miller ‘Elisabeth Sladen’s husband’ and Royce Mills who sadly passed away 7 months ago, Royce Mills plays them again in Revelation and Remembrance which Brian Miller also returned to voice them.
@@SegaNintendoGuy64 Thanks! Didn't see your other comment. Yeah, they did a good job in Skelton's absence, but it was nice to have all three on board for Remembrance of the Daleks.
I would have assumed that it would be Jaime since he had been a companion from the Second Doctor's second story until his last. Apparently Tegan had 19 TV stories.
Hey, don't mind me asking but i vaguely remember an old video of yours which was a review on a book called War of the Daleks. What ever happened to that video?
Fun fact. Even though you cant see it on screen, the Supreme Dalek had a unique design to its skirt section. The rear of it extended outward exactly how its front did.
I might need to give this story another watch. I saw it years ago but barely remember it, and hearing Saward's comments that he reckons it's the worst DW story ever written put me off. But it doesn't look too bad.
i had this on vhs taped over something or other and i shoved it on as a young child and was scarred for life after the chemical weapons scene, seeing that guy begging for help while all deformed just to be shot by his own crewmate was terrifying. it made me think doctor who was terrifying and full of body horror. it doesnt help that my only 2 other vhs tapes of doctor who at the time were pyramids of mars with the creepy mummies and good ol donkey face himself as well as ark in space which is still my favourite doctor who episode
Davros was right when he said to the dr you hesitate if I were you I would be dead and Davros is right in millions of ways the dr cannot bring himself to kill off Davros
I ALSO remember the sound effects had issues when the episodes were shown on American PBS back in the eighties 🧐 like NO SOUND EFFECTS when the Daleks exterminated people for example... REALLY HAPPENED I swear 🤞
I would say, in doing this plans at the same time, it would cement their victory. To do just one would risk retaliation. The Daleks invade Earth (again), the Doctor will stop them. The Daleks rescue Davros, the Doctor will find out, and stop them. They kill the Doctor and the Gallifrey High Command, a new High Command will be elected and annihilate the Daleks.
Never seen this one before until today. Bought it off of Amazon amongst others to watch during the lockdown, personally it's one of my favourite 'of the Daleks' episodes due to how muchaction there is, I certainly prefer it to the rather more boring Day of the Daleks which I saw for the first time the other day. Remembrance of the Daleks is still my favourite though.
tegans had her aunt killed, a friend fall off a mast and literally change his face after thinking he was gonna die, she had another friend get blown up by the cybermen, got possessed by a snake, the events of resurrection, seen countless horrid looking creatures plus all the things in episodes i havent seen yet. she must have so much ptsd and gone through so much therapy. AND on top of that she had the guilt of bringing cybermen into units base by no fault of her own. poor tegan.
The one thing that annoys me about this story, well the main thing at least is it has the perfect setup for a story even more interesting. Suppose the Daleks duplicate plan worked, the Doctor, Tegan and Turloughs duplicates are sent in the captured TARDIS , head back to Galifrey and the real Doctor and companions have to figure out a way to escape, get to Gallifrey and stop the assasination of the High Council. Remember the Doctor is still officially President. Anyway they somehow manage this (time corridors?) and manage to prevent the assasination, buyt fail to prevent (OMG) the sabotage of the transduction barriers and as they manage to rise them , a few Dalek ships manage to get through. A Dalek invasion of Gallifrey, in 1984. Eric Saward set up a premise for a Dalek story way more interesting than the one we got. How irritating. Then as the dust settles, Tegan asks to leave, and the Doctor, after the bodycount of Ressurection, plus this story, reluctanly agrees. It also allows reuse of Gallifrey sets that were made for Arc of infinity and Five Doctors to be reused, keep budget down for this epic. Next story, Planet of fire, and then Caves of Androzani is the season finale. We are spared the Twin Dilemma and (if i had my way) Colin Bakers debut story is a slightly less fanwanky version of Attack of the Cybermen. Like how Troughtons debut was a Dalek story. Or am I crazy/ too ambituous?
In “Destiny of the Daleks” Davros was on life support for like centuries possibly even thousands of years. He probably developed brain damage. Nothing like being frozen in stasis clears up the mind like in between “Destiny of the Daleks” and “Resurrection of the Daleks”.
The duplicates were faulty that or done to well that they took on the personality of the original and well revolted and well exterminated Resulting in the daleks recalibrating the machine by the time the doctor is captured

I swear, any time people talk about this story, it's either about Tegan's departure or the Daleks' kill count.
Lytton could have been a good companion, a ruthless killer who learns compassion whilst travelling with The Doctor.
Next Time: Revolution is on the dark side on the Daleks, And a summer holiday in 84 while off contact is worth writing.
Davros goes from Nyder to Dirty Den as his right hand man 😁
Fairly sure that Jamie was the longest running companion...
Yes, I was pretty sure Jamie was too.
It can depend based on number of stories/episodes/years.
In terms of elapsed time, Jamie (and Sarah Jane Smith) spent three years on the show, but Tegan stayed for four. In terms of episodes: Jamie (116), Sarah Jane (81), Barbara & Ian (78), Jo Grant (77), Tegan (65)
NB: Classic Who only; I didn't count Lis Sladen's 4 episodes of Nu Who or Sarah Jane Adventures
@@ftumschk Tegan was only in it for 3 years...Logopolis was broadcast in March 81 and Resurrection of the Daleks was broadcast in Feb 84. Another way to look at it is 3 seasons bar 1 story.
I had a proper crush on her growing up!! Haha
@@Diskono303 81, 82, 83, 84 = four years
I'm looking forward to this one - if only to find out how depressing it really is. You make a strong case for it despite its apparent flaws, and it's interesting to see a generally nice Doctor get beaten down by the events unfolding around them; one wonders if 13 may suffer the same fate...
No Dalek Kit-Kat advert?

Stubagful: Let me remind you of a little decade called the 1980s which gave us 'gems' like Resurrection of the Daleks, "Agh, I can't stand the confusion in my mind!"

This was the most terrifying Dalek episode for me, that mutation gas yikes!
this is my favourite of the 80s dalek stories and my second favourite dalek story. i’m glad that 5 is your favourite because he’s mine too
I'm constantly saying how much I would love to see Classic companions appear on Doctor Who again.
Well you got your wish
Great reviews mate. Since your a Cyberman fan, I think you should consider deeicating a month to reviewing Cybermen stories.
Just a suggestion. :)
It fits the Daleks that even in their weakest moment, they are simultaneously planning to destroy the Movellans, the Earthlings and the Time Lords.
I had the biggest crush on Teagan as a kid, largely because of the outfit in this story. And so this story will always have a place on my nostalgia shelf.
Yeah, leather skirt rules😅
Teagans leather skirt rules!
It's so badass!
A personal favorite companion costume
"fuckin' prick"
I laughed out loud
4:19 PERFECT 👌
You’re the dalek emperor.
Alex The mta and r179,r211 fan, weather fan DAMN RIGHT I AM.
Resurrection is definitely one of my favourites. The brutality of it is exactly what I expect from the Daleks.
Ah Tegan and her leather skirt. Some childhood memories never fade. 😉
Leather rules 🤘
Same.
I mean, in terms of Davros’ memory, he was in Deep Freeze for quite a while!
And he was conscious for that 90 years I think
As for davros well spending a 100years being frozen in a block of ice tends to have an effect on ones memory
"90 years of mind numbing boredom."
@@eddherring3088 ehh who cares getting ice for a century while conscious fucked his memory
@@eddherring3088 that's horrific, equally to the death experience in the torchwood universe of there being nothing and you can see it all alone
Imagine Terry Molloy's voice coming from the NuWho Davros suit...
Five was such a great Doctor.
This is one of the very best dalek stories.
I’m excited for revelation in like an hour or so and then rememberence tomorrow!
This is a really good story, it addresses the dalek decline, uses davros well, has lots going on, sets up future stories and has lots of death with high stakes.
I think it is that the clones knew what the daleks were doing and ran away before getting gunned down
Seek, locate,
Exterminate.
The Daleks shall sweep away
Gallifrey.
The Daleks do tend to rhyme.
It's how they manipulate time.
11:09. I mean at this point in the series the Daleks didn’t really go to Earth that often. There had only been two other Dalek stories where they attacked Earth (those being the Dalek invasion of Earth and Day of the Daleks)
Not only could Tegan not take it anymore... I think a lot of others agreed.
Saward turned out to be a bit of a bitter one-note writer.
Do we know why the Movellans guns couldn’t shoot lasers? Was that too much at the time or something?
I wouldn't say Teagan was the longest companion. Jamie appeared in all but one of Patrick Troughton's stories during the 2nd Doctor's original run.
SHUT UP AND GO BACK TO THE DALEKS!!!"
… Ahem.
The fifth Doctor episodes were very bleak.
I really have fond memories of this story, I think that all the Davros stories (except for Destiny) are great
I really like the story and it’s bleak tone, but I keep getting distracted by the weird lump on top of half of the dalek domes.
"The mask is a terrific prosthetic!" It makes Davros look like a granny!
You should do a ranking the doctors video afterwards as hearing your thoughts on why 5 is the best are very interesting. I’d also love an update on your top 10 stories of all time.
Love your channel btw! Haha
Just watching this one AGAIN having just watched resurrection again! And I needed help decoding what I saw again!!! 😉😂
Here we go
I think it works just as well in four parts as it does in two. I will give it credit that the cliffhangers for the four-part version at least feel like cliffhangers. Unlike the syndicated American version of the next year where the episodes are split up and the credits just start to roll whether there is any dramatic tension built up or not.
How come the daleks were never built with resurrection abilities? oh davros XD
Resolution/revolution of the daleks says hold my beer
I’m not so why they couldn’t bring Roy Skelton back to voice the Daleks for this story, But if I have to guess two possible ways is they haven’t thought about him, or that Roy Skelton was too busy doing Zippy and George’s voice on Rainbow for Thames Television at the time, At least in the next story Revolution they got him back again as well as the last Dalek story of the classic series Remembrance.
Revelation*
Also, out of curiosity, who did the Dalek voices is Resurrection?
Bumblebee-127 First of all my bad for the incorrect word, And second as I said in my other comment, Both Daleks in this story are played by Brain Miller ‘Elisabeth Sladen’s husband’ and Royce Mills who sadly passed away 7 months ago, Royce Mills plays them again in Revelation and Remembrance which Brian Miller also returned to voice them.
@@DalekTheSupreme Brian Miller (Liz Sladen's husband) and Royce Mills - they both provided Dalek voices in the 80's stories.
@@SegaNintendoGuy64 Thanks! Didn't see your other comment.
Yeah, they did a good job in Skelton's absence, but it was nice to have all three on board for Remembrance of the Daleks.
Bumblebee-127 While Admittedly I still like Roy Skelton as the Daleks The others did great as well.
Tegan was the longest running companion?
That doesn’t sound right... did I mishear that?
I would have assumed that it would be Jaime since he had been a companion from the Second Doctor's second story until his last. Apparently Tegan had 19 TV stories.
Hey, don't mind me asking but i vaguely remember an old video of yours which was a review on a book called War of the Daleks. What ever happened to that video?
No, longer available. I believe it was on The Whovians channel or something.
@@defrostedrobot77 oh ok
Been trying to find it for years
@@zakjaggs9761 same, i think i seen it around 2012 ish and i was trying to find it ever since
Malloy finally!
Maybe Stein was a method actor?
i had this on vhs taped over something or other and i shoved it on as a young child and was scarred for life after the chemical weapons scene, seeing that guy begging for help while all deformed just to be shot by his own crewmate was terrifying. it made me think doctor who was terrifying and full of body horror. it doesnt help that my only 2 other vhs tapes of doctor who at the time were pyramids of mars with the creepy mummies and good ol donkey face himself as well as ark in space which is still my favourite doctor who episode
Davros was right when he said to the dr you hesitate if I were you I would be dead and Davros is right in millions of ways the dr cannot bring himself to kill off Davros
My friend lent me this back in school as a means to introduce Dr Who to me. And I was like, God is it always this violent?
Always kinda loved this story, even if it is as depressing as a 3 hour Radiohead marathon when you're off your meds.
Terry Molloy makes it.
Literally the 1000th like on this video... so satisfying!
1:17 that cyberman is thicccc
Never seen this one before until today. Bought it off of Amazon amongst others to watch during the lockdown, personally it's one of my favourite 'of the Daleks' episodes due to how muchaction there is, I certainly prefer it to the rather more boring Day of the Daleks which I saw for the first time the other day. Remembrance of the Daleks is still my favourite though.
3:40-3:53 Oooh, so that's how to phrase my main issue with Frozen...
What?
Do a cybercember. That is all about all cyberman stories.
tegans had her aunt killed, a friend fall off a mast and literally change his face after thinking he was gonna die, she had another friend get blown up by the cybermen, got possessed by a snake, the events of resurrection, seen countless horrid looking creatures plus all the things in episodes i havent seen yet. she must have so much ptsd and gone through so much therapy. AND on top of that she had the guilt of bringing cybermen into units base by no fault of her own. poor tegan.
The worst of the 80's Dalek stories, but still a fun watch.
The black Supreme Dalek in this story is awesome and also better than davros who is half dalek and halfman
So the theme of this story is one thing.. Death!
In “Destiny of the Daleks” Davros was on life support for like centuries possibly even thousands of years. He probably developed brain damage. Nothing like being frozen in stasis clears up the mind like in between “Destiny of the Daleks” and “Resurrection of the Daleks”.
I like Resurrection of the Daleks
The duplicates were faulty that or done to well that they took on the personality of the original and well revolted and well exterminated
Resulting in the daleks recalibrating the machine by the time the doctor is captured
You forgot the part where the doctor shoots a cat
5:44 doesn’t Resolution use the same idea?
