It's gonna be a sad, sad day when we lose Tom. I can't even imagine how the series will pay tribute to him when he passes.
I'm getting that the current mess will ignore it.
I don't always like narrations from the Doctor's perspective because they never feel as alien as him. Tom however, nails it in Scratchman. Every description makes it sound like you're inside the fourth Doctor's head.
Ngl I can see Baker having a working knowledge of SJA, given how close he was with Sladen, and when writing a book starring her and specifically a scene depicting her future, I could see him reading up on the show for it
Also if you haven't already, listen to the audiobook version of Scratchman. Baker reading it in his do alien yet so familiar voice is the definitive version
I’m so happy you remade this this to include Scratchman and Well mannered war since those are two of my favorite stories of all time (Scratchman being my favorite story ever)
I’m reading _Scratchman_ right now. It’s so bloody good, and you can hear Tom Baker narrating everything in your mind.
The directors of the horns of nimon intentionally asked all the actors to be as panto and as melodramatic as possible, i think it is a great example of cheese in doctor who and I cannot help but love it. Its objectively bad but its really fun just like Timelash
Graham Crowden’s Soldeed is a true homage to over the top villains in Doctor Who (and science fiction in general). It works in the classic series.
I want them to bring them back somehow
Breaking news "JNT comes back from the dead and is now joining forces with current show runner Chris Chibnall to be a head show running duo"
Anyone else hoping we get a new Eleven retrospective at some point so it’s more than ten minutes long?
Aaaaaaah, there might be time for it in 2021 when you put it like that
@@SamyulDavis ok, 100% confirmed
*Cries in 11*
@@SamyulDavis one 2021 and 2022 later
So glad you talked about The Well-Mannered War. Never read the book but I ADORED the audio adaptation of it. I know Gareth Roberts is...well, you know. But if there is any Doctor Who writer that most successfully captured the style, tone, and overall sense of fun that the Graham Williams era had while also improving upon it and making it his own, it's Mr Roberts.
Thanks for recommending. I'll check it out! Also never read the book
Tfw you've been attracted to Tom Baker since you were five and know it's stupid and silly but continue to crush on multiple Doctor actors.
It’s not stupid, I’m a straight guy and I have a crush on Tom Baker.
I’ve been watching through the Key to Time and I’ve found myself feeling much like you do! I think it’s the voice :P
@@rockisheaven Yeah. He, Pertwee and Troughton I all find attractive.
Tom Baker is brilliant in the
Golden Voyage of Sinbad
I don't know exactly why but the epilogue with 4 and 13 on the beach at the end of Scratchman actually brought me to tears. This book is heavily responsible for bringing me back to DW, even if it took me several months to get through for no reason.
City of Death just has the best vibes. It just makes me so happy.
Wasn't expecting to see this! But I'm not going to complain!!
@@WithScienceAsMySheperd What?
You better not complain lmao
an interesting idea for a video topic that's not been done to death is analyzing the panto of Dr.Who specifically the panto humor tropes light hearted episode that old and new who used and the weird ways they shaped the lore. like dr.who is so saturated with stories that have a very English kinda sensibility that there's all sorts of strange and wonderful things floating around and I'd be curious how much of that whimsical wunderlust was informed by panto tropes
Romana II is the best companion. I always feel that Romana is unique in that she's really the only companion who is pretty much the doctor's equal. Sure she's younger and more inexperienced, but she's just as smart, cunning, and charismatic as him and they have a great chemistry.
I prefer Sarah Jane and Romana 1.
Leela, not only could she protect you handy with a knife and ready to cut the throat of anything but she was hot in her severteam outfit! But yeah Lalla Ward (Romana II), Liz Shaw, Jo Grant (Katie Manning) are definitely up there with Romana I (Mary Tam) , Ace (Sophie) is cool too and Rose in the newer series....
Oh hey mate- As an April Fool's Joke, you should do a: '2021 version,' of a Doctor, but literally just have it as a complete re-upload of the previous version! 🙃
i'd watch it
Bought the Scratchman book off your recommendation, looking forward to listening to the man himself narrate it.
"wHy iS ThE DOcToR So MeAN tO THe DisABLeD mAn?!"
Hardly anyone covers classic Who so well. Bravo loving the channel
I recently got the E space trilogy second hand and discovered that I had not seen State of Decay and Warriors Gate. Watched those two episodes in one day and... mwa... some of my favourite Doctor Who TV stories.
Full circle as well for me. Just 3 excellent stories.
@@SamyulDavis Yeah, I bought Full Circle second hand like 3 years ago and watched it. It was good.
Series 18 as a whole is probably one of my favourite full series in Classic. Don't think there's a story in there that I don't enjoy at least a little (yes, I enjoy The Leisure Hive, Meglos, and Logopolis)
The E-Space trilogy and Keeper of Traken are definitely the highlights for me (and the Big Finish audio that's a sequel to Keeper is pretty good too, though that's a 5th Doctor thing)
@@SamyulDavis Full Circle is not very good. I like the other two though
I'm pretty sure that, for a moment in time, Adric couldn't help but think "Geeze... I shoulda stayed in e-space!"
Tom is like the Beatles. He may not be your favourite but you can’t deny his impact and genius.
Tom is my favorite.
Tom is THE definitive Doctor. My favorite by far. No one else comes close.
Two of yer "worst" are two that I enjoy. However, I will agree: 'Warriors Gate' is one of the best (and VERY underrated) Fourth Doctor stories.
The only flaw I can identify in warriors gate is when romana automatically held the tharels hand they both teleport and she gave no reaction. Apart from that it's a masterpiece.
Honestly top 10 stories for me
Honestly I love your longer videos, my regular binge. Keep em up!
And I’m glad to see that, like me, your getting more into James Goss who NEEDS to make the jump to tv who!
Happy 57th Anniversary to the best show!
I live for these vids, thanks friend, happy Who day!
Imagine a conversation between Tom Baker and Jeff Goldblum.
Also, I'm stuck in a time loop between 4:36 - 4:40... thanks for that.
5:21 well it happened to Captain Jack to, and that was with Keith Lemon.
And then gene wilder and bill bailey join in.
I love Destiny of the Daleks... to be fair I watched it years ago and so it’s one of the first classic episodes I watched.
2:55 one of the raunchiest scenes in doctor who history. Can't believe the BBC got away with it.
I admit, I was expecting a clip from The Creature of the Pit...
I don't know. The "bouncy castle" line was quite shocking for me... _New Earth_ 15 April 2006 as _Rose_ is possessed by villainess _Cassandra O'Brien.Δ17._
Great time to visit this doctor again
The Horns of Nimon contains the greatest camp villain of all time. Graham Crowden may not have invented the meme, but he certainly personified it...
Most of the Doctors were walking in the shoes of Troughton. He wasn't the first, but he was the first doctor to be a "madman with a box". I think Baker took what Troughton brought to the character and elevated it further. I think that Smith channeled that with 11 quite nicely, especially incorporating the darkness inherent in the character. I think that the 7th Doctor also tried to channel this energy, and was fairly successful most of the time. I get that 10 still the most popular Doctor of them all, and I think he probably deserves that even though he isn't personally my favorite. I would say he was an effective mix of Doctors 2, 4, 5 and 8 (mostly 8's darkness).
Now this is a treat!
I remember last time all the entires were just from the show- None from audio comics or books- Not complaining, but I wonder if this will be different :)
The Armageddon Factor is the Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos of its day
Have you listened the most recent series of Fourth Doctor Adventures earlier this year? It took place during the E-Space Trilogy and is honestly some of the best stuff Big Finish have put out this year. I know how much you love the E-Space Trilogy so I highly recommend it! Especially Chase the Night, it's honestly one of my favourite Big Finish stories of all time.
5:49 LOL! 🤣 I've seen this episode twice in the past week, for I often go to bed with either *Doctor Who* or *MST3K* on my TV (via *Pluto TV* live stream). And you're absolutely right, *Graham Crowden's* performance is so. . . _kooky._ I keep wondering if he thought the show was for very young children (versus a family show).
But as with such performances, I lay it all at the feet of the directors and producers. Because apparently they thought this was _just fine._ 🤣 And hey, I'm kind of glad we have it too! 😆
_"Lord Niiiiimon. It's meeee, Soldeed…"_
Before my experience this week with the *Horns of Nimon,* I really thought the pirate captain from *The Pirate Planet* earned the _over-the-top_ award. _"Mr. Fibuli!"_
16:09 *_MAKE IT STOP!!!!_* 😫
And, ugh. . .yes, *The Invasion of Time.* 🙄 Everything you noted.
As I continue to watch so many episodes, I was instantly annoyed at the 'misunderstanding predicament' which reared its truly ugly head virtually each and every time the *Doctor* first arrives somewhere. _"You murdered them!"_
_"You must have sabotaged the ship!"_
Speaking of things. . . I would have liked to have seen *Dylan Moran* as the *Doctor.* Although, I can pretent a bit as I watch *Black Books.*
When I grow up I want to be a cross between Tom Baker and DAVIS
My Best and Worst 4th Doctor Stories.
WORST
5: Terror Of The Zygons (An Utterly boring romp through a Scotland ending with a goodbye to an honesty forgettable companion.)
4: Destiny of the Daleks (Mostly Dull with the only saving graces being Lalla Wards performance and The 4th doctors interactions with Davros
3: Nightmare of Eden (An episode where you could tell Tom Baker didn’t get along with the director and a messy, unorganized story)
2: The Masque of Mandragora (Disappointment: The Episodes. Featuring a spotlight, A dick-ish Fourth Doctor, and a setting and concept that could’ve been so done with some improvement.)
1: The Armageddon Factor ( An episode that felt like someone was forced to finish a loose story arc and hadn’t see any of them up until the point of writing.)
BEST
5: The Talons of Weng-Chiang (A Great gothic mystery with interesting characters and showing Tom Baker could play a decent Sherlock Homes. Brought down by some not good special effects, action scenes feeling like filler, and uncomfortable yellow face.)
4: The Foe from the Future (Same great gothic mystery, Interesting villain and settings and one of my favorite endings to a Doctor who stories.)
3: The Face of Evil ( To put it simply, Iconic. Iconic settings, Pretty cool concept, A great introduction to a classic companion, and has probably my favorite Fourth Doctor moment.)
2: Genesis of the Daleks (The go-to Fourth Doctor adventure. Giving the show’s most iconic villains a dark origin and a creator almost as sick as them was fantastic. Great performance from all of the cast and I can see why people say it’s the best Original Doctor Who episode.)
1: Scratchman ( A story that feels personal to Tom Baker and his past. A amazing, If surreal story with on point characters and setting with a unique monster for the Doctor to face. In the end, It’s what I think to be the perfect epilogue to the 4th Doctor time.)
Comment what you think of my list.
I'm still peeved that I didn't get to include Face of Evil. Great list.
Pyramids and Robots of Death?
Perfect analysis 😊👍
What on Earth was that fake Gareth Roberts eulogy piece 😂 I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help but laugh!
It's no laughing matter. RIP to the late Roberts.
@@SamyulDavis RIP. May he not be missed.
Surprised the Daleks weren’t in the Scratchman book considering they would have been in the movie if it was made.
I listened to Scratchman before I did a full watch through of the classic series, so I had seen maybe 2 Baker stories at the time. The premise of it was too up my alley to wait until I had watched it, and it was so good that it made me love the fourth doctor before I even had a feel for him from the show.
I genuinely liked Armageddon Factor and Power of Kroll. They have their flaws for sure but like they did a great job of making Kroll seem huge.
HOW DARE YOU DEGRADE NIGHTMARE I LOVEEEEEEE IT
So I agree with everything you said here and you explained it well, except that-probably an actual hot take- _Nightmare of Eden_ is one of my favorite Tom Baker episodes. I just really enjoyed the plot. The Mandrels are terrible, but I've seen enough Classic Who to get past them. I see your faults with them but I guess I'd say of the "Doctor arrives on a ship" episodes, I think it's one of the better ones.
Also, I must add, if anyone here read _Scratchman_ and enjoyed it, or didn’t yet, listen to the audiobook. I started reading it and had trouble staying interested, but once I started reading along to Baker's narration, I greatly enjoyed it. It's a great story for Four, and is better yet with Baker's voice.
Most of my classic Doctor stories have come from the BF line of stories and there are some great ones, but oooh boy are there some stinkers. Have you heard Planet of the Drashigs? Its litteraly Jarassic park. Within 10 minutes you can tell whos gonna die, who created the problem and how its going to be fixed. I only finished it because its part of a collection.
Thanks for the Scratch man recomindation. Definatly going to check it out now.
How did Gareth's trouser legs get attached to the grey hound?
Some of the best moments of the show were the hide and seek games the Doctor was playing with the Sontarans while running around inside the insanely spacious TARDIS
The real tragedy of _Revenge of the Cybermen_ is that they made Kevin Stoney wear that ridiculous mask that completely negated his acting talent. Yep, the actor who played Mavic Chen and Tobias Vaughn, two of the most captivating, entertaining villain performances in all of Doctor Who... and I'll bet you didn't even know he was _in_ Revenge of the Cybermen.
Oh, and my favourite 4th Doctor story (and one of my favourite Doctor Who stories for that matter) is _The Ribos Operation._ Not because it's especially good, but because it's the story that I can always enjoy watching, no matter what mood I'm in. It's flawlessly adequate, low-effort fun, and it's the one I always come back to when I want to kill a couple of hours with some casual Doctor Who.
That was genuinely a surprise, yes.
Excellent video. Just as an aside - drollest means wittiest not dullest. :)
YES! Condemn the Horns of Nimon! CONDEMN IT!
Do you think you'll do this with most of the Doctors you reviewed at the beginning?
My 11 video is bad, but the list aligns with my opinions still. The lists for 7, 8 and 9 aren't perfect, but nothing so pressing as this and the Tennant one.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
So how many pot brownies do I need on hand, too marathon horns of Nimon? Davis it looks like mairijouna whould be a great help for this.
Remember that 1 time in Destiny of the Daleks that a Dalek shrugged
One Tom Baker was worth a cartload of Tennants. Tom was the best incarnation of them all.
Feastival of death is also a amazing 4th doctor and romana story. I would put it on my top 5
Tom is basically to England what Adam West or Shatner is to the US. The show’s silliness is an acquired taste.
Hello Davis Tom Baker is such an ICON but towards the end due to a failing relationship the Audience can feel his pain as his co star didn't think this kid show was serious work..hence hurting Tom and making him doubt his Genius
Does anyone know what book the doctor is reading at 2:01
Oddly enough, its Scratchman
Will you be redoing anymore of these. I love them and will take as many as I can get.
Unlikely! 4, 10 & 12 were the three that really desperately needed maintenance. Just rough videos and outdated lists. The others are usually just one or the other. Thanks for watching :)
@@SamyulDavis Well I'll just have to go back to re watching this series every few months. Appreciate the response.
@@shwenty1734 maybe I'll expand 11's in 2021 :)
it got sillier as the hammer horror of Hinchecliffe and Holmes got killed off by Mary Whitehouse!
The City of Death did get good ratings, but ITV were on strike so don’t be fooled by this, it’s an over-rated tale in my view. The other selections I agree with except for Invasion of Time which I have a soft spot for, the Sontaran reveal blew my mind when I watched it as a kid. Deadly Assassin is my absolute favourite, while I remember it upon first broadcast, I came to love it later.
Thanks for this, keep up the good work.
City of Death is cool - the best theory to creation of life on this planet!
I'm sorry I love nightmare on Eden because I remember watching it as a child 😄
Has he reuploded the same video
I feel like people really quickly looked over this story but uh..
Genetics of The Daleks is easily top 5 Dalek stories of all time and it’s one of the best Baker stories ever made!! I will not be hearing otherwise.
If I get round to my Timelord Victorious video, it'll rank very highly indeed.
@@SamyulDavis woo! Hyped to see you talk about TLV. I’m waiting a little while to get around to it all because I’m currently trying to listen to 8s run in chronological order. But I’ve heard Genetics obviously, watched Daleks! and I own the two 10th doctor novels (knight fool and dead & all flesh is grass) plus the three (currently) released 8 audios. Still need minds of magnox and echoes but then I’m set!
My 2 favourite doctor's will always be jon and tom 2 favourite companions jo and Sarah Jane cheers Stephen 🍀🍀✌️👍
can someone explain the gareth roberts thing
I just bought the 1981 annual, the artwork is markedly less trippy than previous annuals of Tom's era, I guess they were easing down on the illicit substances
Entering the crack era and leaving the acid era behind 😮
At the start of the video me be like
Hmmm deja vu
7:34 Why is The Chase there?
I’m curious if you’re joking because apparently Roberts is still alive. Was the mention of the greyhound racetrack a joke that’s not translating well or what?
Nightmare of Eden is such a guilty pleasure of mine.
It's 80% of the way to being a 4 part classic, but just doesn't quite make it and is let down by some questionable set and monster design. I do genuinely like the story though.
The worst was the second season, there was Sarah Jane fatigue, the worst companion: K9
Worst single episode: Underworld
Best season 16 and 18
Best episode Deadly Assassin
Horns of Nimon is the first Companion story led story.
The 4th Doctor/Romana era is the best part of the Baker era
OMG you put in the TLV music!!!!!!
very good ear!
I would’ve loved a us/uk crossover in the 70s starring Tom baker directed by Mel brooks
I started off watching Josh Snares Doctor Who videos because I just stumbled across them and thought, "Eh, what the hell." Josh is quite funny and knows how to make comedic, entertaining stuff. Then I saw your vids being suggested and I gave them a try as well. Josh has dry wit and sarcasm but you seem to amplify it to the power of "Oh holy fuck!" leaving me almost passing out laughing, and grappling with my computer desk as if it's the 60s TARDIS console and "The 2nd Doctor" has just said, "Everybody hold tight, here we go!"
21:39 Is that really you? Holy crap, you're adorable... 😍😍😍😍😍
No. I won't take it back, not even if you totally trash Sylvester McCoy once I get round to watching his your "best and worst" of his 7th Doctor!
But please... DON'T FREAK OUT! *_People find cars attractive/sexy that they'll never, ever get to ride (in)..._* 😏😏😏😏😏
21:57 - Some Full Circle peeking through the list, eh?
Its trying to break back in

Bro why are you so inconsistent with Gareth Roberts death? I come to this channel for consistent cannon.
For legal reasons I cannot state what Mr Roberts was doing on the track in the first place. He could've had any intentions.
@@SamyulDavis maybe his dream was to become a racing dog. He could have been the champion of dog racing but he just wasn't hairy enough

Robots of Death was cool 😎
what's not to like about D84 ?
Such a good fucking thumbnail
Oh hey revisiting the big Baker, I guess it was inevitable given the sheer volume of 4th Doctor content is pretty intimidating even by usual Doctor Who standards.
DAVIS, would you be interested in hearing my draft of my Season 17B theory :)
Shoot
Huh?
DAVIS gonna try to make a doc link. A bit too long winded for a comment.
Please do a doctor who collection video showing all your dvds, books, comics, audios and so on.
I don't have many! And they're very poorly presented!
RIP GARETH ROBERTS
About to start this doctor with my partner, it's their first watch through of Classic and we're halfway through death to the daleks (I've seen all the episodes multiple times)
all 178 of them?
To be fair I was reared on Seals and Croft
Seasons 15b to end of baker in season 18 had some of the worst stories the production had gone down hill I could understand why baker was unhappy about his last few seasons for me there was only a few good episodes in this era a lot of silly creatures and villains in these stories I'm glad we got seasons 12 to 15a before the rot set in
Baker's last 2 are my favourites, but that middle quadrant with Leela and Romana 1....yikes
I'm quite embarrassed to admit it but I've never watched any Classic Who. I've watched everything from the revival and listened to some Big Finish but I've never had access to Classic Who media. Could you please recommend a good jumping-on point? Maybe a particular Doctor, maybe a particular season but any help would be greatly appreciated.
I suggest The Mind Robber first, 2nd Doctor story.
Carnival of Monsters and Remembrance of the Daleks are also good shouts, worked for me as a newbie.
@@SamyulDavis Thanks man! If you find the time a good future video might be best value Big Finish/ DVD box sets for the cash-strapped Whovian. God knows I could do with it!
I really recommend the new Timelord Victorious dvd set! Great budget for some great stories. Genesis and Fenric are labelled as some of the best stories ever and there isn't one bad story on there. Give it a Google!
@@SamyulDavis Thanks so much! Your help is extremely appreciated
whos your favourite modern doctor? 9th is quite a bit like 7th but nowhere near as manipulative.
10th is a lot like 5th, the gentle pacifist who can be as ruthless as hell when needed.
11th claims great influence from 2nd (but many of his stories are missing) if you want the inhumanness of the doctor its 4th.
but the best jump on is 3rd. Its in colour there are no more more missing stories and he had the best, most constant run of the classic doctors.
or go right back to the beginning, first doctor, first story, An Unearthly Child, it is sooo worth it
K9, THE AMAZON WOMAN, GREAT TIMES 😂😂😂😂
Has anyone made a Doctor Who iceberg meme?
Gareth Roberts looks like a Thumb Thumb from Spy Kids. Tom Baker is pretty good.
Is this a re-upload cause I’m getting severe deja vu with the opening
An update of half of the video :)
Thanks bruv
he's not even a real baker
LMAO!
What about Colin?
Must not like the hats.
I feel like I'm missing something here.. Gareth Roberts isn't dead is he?

All your "worst" choices are stories I like with one exception but I'm glad you've dropped Robots Of Death - but your reasons for including it last time were objectively wrong. And you're wrong about Ribos Operation as well.
It's hard to pick a "worst of" Tom but it would probably include Robot, Android Invasion, Invisible Enemy, Revenge of the Cybermen, and it would definitely have Underworld top of the list.
if the invasion of time is the worst sontaran episode, what’s the two doctors??
Second worst x

Its weird seeing my two first Classic episodes on this list. Destiny I still think is a lot of fun but even as a kid I knew Invasion of Time was garbage. Also while Revenge of the Cybermen is pretty mediocre (I put it on the same level as Destiny) the coolest weapons the Cybermen ever had were the Gatling Lasers on their heads
