I have noticed that in the past, but I've never been 100% sure if that little light is meant to be the escape pod or not. It could always been a trick of the light. However, I would love to get official word from the production on it.

@@MrTARDIS The speck of light seems perfectly timed and placed just before the explosion, and the trajectory is congruent with an object shooting away from the mothership. Can't be 100% either, but I'm 99% sure it's meant to be Davros' escape capsule.

Remembrance of the Daleks is not only my favorite Seventh Doctor story, despite the deeper themes of his last few episodes, but it's a serious contender for my favorite Dalek story. I mean, it's between this and Genesis of the Daleks, but Remembrance of the Daleks is truly a story to remember.
Also it made my youngest brother a Seventh Doctor fan. Also also, it might have been my first proper Dalek story that I watched. I can't remember if I had seen the Peter Cushing Dalek movies first. Definitely my earliest memory of Davros.

After his first season in the role, but before it aired stateside, I met McCoy at the Whomobile in San Jose. At the time, I wanted to know if he'd done a Dalek story yet and he said not yet, but he wanted to and would go back and tell the production team that a fan in America had asked about them. Weeks later, the cover of Doctor Who Magazine proclaims the Daleks are coming back. While I know McCoy was being kind to a young fan, I still like to pretend he went back to JNT and demanded a Dalek story to satisfy a young, enthusiastic American fan.
Needless to say, I was predisposed to love this story when I finally got to see it. I was completely SPOILER free on it and went in fresh. I remember running around the living room, shouting, "It's going u the stairs! It's going up the stairs!" when the cliffhanger for episode one appeared. If that was all this story had going for it, it would be more than enough. But it's incredibly good and a highlight of classic Who. I can understand why Moffat chose it as the 7th Doctor's entry for the 50th anniversary overview of Doctor Who for BBC America.
Hot damn...I want to break out my DVD and watch this one again now.
And the novelization if you can get ahold of it was REALLY good too. The audio version read by Terry Molloy is worth the price of admission as well.

My favourite Doctor Who story ever... Just amazing. When I first watched it back in 1988 and that Dalek levitated up the stairs... well. Mind blown.
All the nods to the past. Weaving this story into the tapestry of Who lore. Expanding upon that lore. Hints that The Doctor was around back in the days of Rassilon and Omega and worked with them on The Hand of Omega. "And didn't we have trouble with the prototype..." Love the direction they were taking with The Doctor. Manipulative, dark, controlling. A man that deliberately goes after his enemies and nails them. There was an interesting line that was edited out of the final story that went to air. "Oh Davros. I am far more than just another Time Lord." Mysterious.
I very much like that Davros was hardly in the story and relegated to the last five minutes of the serial. Gives the Daleks themselves time to shine without being overshadowed by their creator.
I could go on, but Mr TARDIS has pretty much said it all. 10/10 from me.

Just everything about it is great : great side characters(the sort of UNITesque military, Ratcliffe, Mike, etc.), the in-jokes hinting to the program's past(with the TV transmission), the continuation of the Dalek civil war, the great action sequences, the infamous "stairs" cliffhanger, memorable dialogue(the unlimited rice pudding), great chemistry between Ace and the Doctor. It's a Dalek story that is effectively turned up to 11 - and a truly great way to start the show's 25th season.

Visually it's the most amazing and well executed Dr Who story during the classic era considering the limitations of the budget. I love the subtle references. One of the things that bothered me about this story is how useless the white daleks kind of are?
During the iconic scene with the white dalek going up the stairs, why doesn't the dalek just shoot the doctor from below the stairs? It didn't need to chase him up the stairs. He's not holding a knife, he's got a gun.
The second cliffhanger with Ace and the group of white daleks, they're just surrounding her and shouting exterminate without actually shooting. They could've exterminate her like 50 times by the time the doctor arrives.
And she evaded like 2 or 3 daleks before that too.
I'm just gonna chalk it up to the transmat maybe messing with their ray gun somewhat. Maybe they have to 'charge up' their weapon or something like that.
Then later when the grey and white daleks first face off in the streets, there were four white daleks and two grey daleks, and both group are shooting at each other, and no one got shot for like 5 seconds, which is forever in a gun fight. And they were face to face, it's not like they're across really far away or anything like that.
And then in the end the TWO grey daleks somehow able to defeat the FOUR white daleks?
Same thing with the final battle at the junkyard. A bunch of daleks shooting at each other and no one gets hit.
The only useful white daleks seems to be the special weapons daleks. Without them, the white daleks basically shot NOTHING this whole story. They had a better design, but they're kind of useless.
The grey Daleks were a lot better. They killed a bunch of humans, and destroyed a few white daleks. They had the little girl in control who could shoot lightning out of her hands (super cool), and they're the ones that found the hand of omega.
I wish the story would've focused more on just the grey Daleks, and only show the imperial white daleks in the later parts of the story. Maybe even have the doctor be the one to contact them down to instigate the civil war conflict as it kicks into the third act. The story would be a lot more focused if we only have one dalek group to follow. The grey dalek group with the neo-nazi subplot and the mystery/twist of the little girl would be enough to support the story. The white daleks didn't really do anything until the fourth episode.
The story would've flowed a lot better if they only found the white daleks half way into the story in eps 2 or 3 instead of so early in the story. Put the discovery of the transmat at the end of ep 2, leaving ep 3 to deal with the white daleks. Have eps 1 and 2 deal with the hand of omega and the neo-nazi association, maybe leaving the headmaster as a mystery before revealing the imperial daleks at the midpoint of the story.

Ace is fucking awesome. Name one other companion who the first time she met the daleks would just would grab a 1960's RPG and blow a dalek to bits, Beat multiple daleks with a baseball bat because they called her small and make explosives in her spare time?
Oh and big Ups to Sophie Aldred. That was a real Rocket launcher, yes it was a stunt but a damn good one with the actors doing it.

This has to be favourite episode of doctor who. I think this story is the very early stages of the time war alongside genesis being the start of the time war. I have watched this so many times and it never gets old great writing and a great story

Was Remembrance really the start of the Time War?
Like in Resurrection of the Daleks the plan is to clone to Doctor and companions to assassinate the high council.
An Genesis of the Daleks was technically the Time Lords trying to make a preemptive strike....

I can remember watching these episodes.......the "Heavy" Dalek was a cool addition. Sylvestor McCoy did a good job and Ace was always a sharp contrast and foil. Ace was also the object of a decent story arc that concluded in "The curse of Fenric" which gave insight into who Ace really was, and why she was unique.

@@crimsondynamo615 Politics has always been a part of Doctor Who. I agree. It's just that the show knew how to present it very well so it blended with the story more naturally. Unfortunatley, Chibnall isn't a good writer.

Thanks for the review; I missed several references; I recognized some of the more obvious ones.
I really didn't like the Doctor being mysterious -- at least, not the way they did it with Sylvester McCoy... he wasn't so much mysterious as just withholding information for no reason whatsoever, which seemed just silly.
I remember watching this, probably when it was first on in the US, and being amazed at the Dalek going up the stairs.

I was shocked by how good this was when I first saw it. BBC sfx explosions had a bit of a reputation of being literal damp squibs, but not here. Ace as a bat wielding no nonsense hero was amazing and the doctor trying to be clever but perhaps too clever was compelling to watch. This may be a minority viewpoint, but I do feel that Who's unusual format was definately keeping out new viewers.
