Years ago, my local PBS station ran a Dalek marathon, showing a Dalek story a week on Sunday nights from the beginning. So, you have my respect for going through these daily and not weekly as I did back in the day. By this point, there is a pattern to the Dalek stories that is becoming clear: tease them in the title but then they won't show up until the cliffhanger of episode one when we're all supposed to be surprised by this development. And you're right that Terry Nation loves to use elements of stories over and over and over again...but that did lead to us getting Genesis of the Daleks. The DVDs tells us how Barry Letts called Nation out over turning in the same script as twice before and challenged him to write something new. The result was one of the greatest stories in all of Doctor Who. Pertwee was pretty much not a huge fan of the Daleks either. And given his three Dalek stories ain't exactly home runs, I can see why.

I have to give my vote to Tom Bakers Genesis of the Daleks especially as it clears up a bit more of how Davros came up with them, plus I always preferred Sarah Jane Smith to Jo Grant. Jo always seemed to whine too much in my opinion. There have been few female companions who were not just screaming and running damsels in distress. During Tom Bakers time the stories got a bit darker with a victorian age Hammer House horror feel. I'm from the US but I believe this was about the time that one old woman and her group really began to attack the show. I believe this is what caused it to be canceled not long after. On Toms departure they decided to make the show more kid friendly this led to number 5 and then 6 being toned down and having to wear rediculous clown clothes with number 7 McCoys being the worse, he was a idiotic imp dancing around. It wasn't until right at the end around the time of the Fenric episode that they toned down his dumb outfit and the plot became a bit more like the old days. Number 12 and the last ones all seem to be trying to get more kid friendly again. They don't seem to understand how to let the show be more adult. Here in the states no one thinks Who is for kids. If it doesn't have kids in the cast then it's for teens and older. I'll just say one more time Tom Bakers Doctor was the best until number 9 ushered in the new era.
This story is kind of a defining moment in Jo's character arc before her final adventure. You kinda have to have watched all of her time since Terror of the Autons to get it, but she's a lot braver and confident than she is in her first season. The moment where she resists the Master's hypnosis via a nursery rhyme really shows the strength of her character and how much she's grown from how easily he took control of her on their first meeting. Also her venturing to go outside on her own to get help for the Doctor and survive most of the story without him and find him by herself, again compare that with how terrified she is on her first trip in Colony in Space.
That’s true. Near the end of season 9 and the whole season 10 was so strong portrayed and well written for her. I liked her at first but now I love her. I get why she was tired in the end and just wanted home
While I do enjoy Planet of the Daleks, it always felt like there was some problem with it I had that I just couldn't figure out what it was, and I think you've hit the nail on the head. There should have been some invisible Dalek moments, and the Supreme Dalek should have shown up a lot sooner. End of Part 5 cliffhanger at the latest. It also would have been nice for it to have shared a scene with the Doctor.
at the end of episode 1 i dont think that the doctor is surprised to find a dalek on the planet, i think its more played that he is surprised they can turn invisible
I feel like by the end of episode one, everyone has forgotten that the universe is on the brink of war and has instead turned the focus to whatever plot the Daleks have come up with this time.
I read thar Terry Nation hated the Dalek Emperor seen in David Whitaker's Evil of the Daleks and Terry also refused to use the Dalek Emperor seen in the comic TV Century 21 that Dalek Emperor was gold with gold spheres and also that Dalek should IMO have appeared more frequently in the classic Dalek stories
The thing that sucks about Frontier in Space is that when the story is two and a half hours and most of which is spent with the Doctor and Jo just sitting in different prison cells, there's no excuse for the ending to be this cluttered and rushed, and the fact that it's the last image we get of Delgado's Master just makes me resent the story all the more
"before planet of the daleks in 1963" you could make a challenge out of spotting all the misspoken wrong years in these, I feel bad for you, I guess having to get these done 2 months in advance is going to do that to you.
Thanks for the review! I really enjoyed Frontier in Space; wished the Draconians would return. Really liked Roger Delgado. Would have loved to see a proper sequel. I wasn't really that interested in "Planet of the Daleks" -- the invisibility theme didn't really grab me, and it didn't really really seem like a sequel except just at the beginning (like you said). The ice flow was not really that believable.
Did the Doctor at 1:50 just throw a person standing next to him preparing to shoot whatever comes out of the door at the the Ogron that came through the door in order to run get away with Jo? Never knew this Doctor to one to sacrifice someone.
Agreed! Which did you love or hate? For me, that landing dalek spaceship was especially yuck, it looks so so crude, particularly the ‘rocket fire’, oh my god, is this 90s CGI!? I thought the daleks decanting looked ok but so did the original effect. I loved the new shots of the animal eyes at night, though, they looked superb, the new sprayed invisible dalek was a nice correction, and I thought most of the dalek army on ice shots looked fine (but lacking in atmosphere), until after the explosion, then that ice flow was a bit... hmmmm. Did I miss anything?
Terry nation wrote the Daleks as a devious, scheming , malevolent force who could think for themselves. Also, the Dalek voices were all done by Michael Wisher .
I think you can attribute the fact he is surprised at the end of Episode One at the reveal of the Daleks down to A)The fact they were invisible and I don't think he expected that invisible thing to be a Dalek or B)He is post-coma, its possible he was still a bit out of it
The pairing gives me an idea for a serial where the doctor is caught in the middle of a war between the master and the Daleks. Probably wouldn't work in the current canon though.
It was alright. 7/10… Idk something was lacking. Especially when the Doctor thought Jo died. No emotion whatsoever there which was out of character for the 3rd Doctor. (I blame it on his coma state from episode 1 of this serial).. ofc it was quite the remake of The Daleks from 1964.. I enjoyed it but it’s pretty forgettable. U can even tell when Pertwee is hating a serial. He stated himself he hates the Daleks and it’s showing in his acting whenever he is around a Dalek. Only thing I really loved how mature Jo was and fighted back. I even felt sorry for her. She was tired of being hunted and I understood why she wanted home after so many adventures. I was quite shocked that Jo and The 3rd Doctor didn’t interacted for TWO whole episodes. That’s insane lol
I respectfully disagree. I adore Planet, the characters just make it such an enjoyable watch for me. I prefer it leaps and bounds over The Daleks. One of my all time favourite Who stories and my favourie Nation script.
I know what you are implying, but saying that "The Daleks master invisibility and we never SEE that coming into play again" is really fucking funny to me.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who found Fruitier in Space interminably dull! The Draconians look amazing, but its..soooo....slooowwww....and by the time the Daleks show up I was still laughing at the belching beach ball. And the whole scene where the Master...shoots the Doctor? Or he falls and Jo states very hard at him? I swear that scene has always looked like it's missing footage or something. Love Planet of the Daleks, except for the ridiculous notion that the TARDIS could be smothered by something in the outer Plocie Box shell - I mean what happens when it's in space? Or on any planet without a breathable atmosphere? That is writing straight out of Rian Johnson's "How to Write Utter BullShite that Makes Zero Sense". Still an enjoyable romp for the most part, and love the collection of old style Dalek action figures as the Dalek Army! The powerful speech where the Doctor tells the Thaks to not make war seem exciting or fun for the next generation is the sort of reason and sober consideration of consequences that we desperately need in the world today. Good stuff, even when it has parachutes made from plastic wrap! :-)
The Draconians are awesome villains and they were the main villains in Buck Rogers 25th century in the first series and they were Jon Pertwees all time favourite dr who enemies and Jon Pertwee hated the Daleks and hated the Cybermen he was not fond of the Ice Warriors he found enemies like the Cybermen Daleks and Ice Warriors less interesting and less easy to interact with and he preferred humanoid enemies instead
I know Frontier in Space is padded but I've personally always enjoyed the padding as its really comedic at points. I would definitely take an endearing political story with a great villian and great moments over a story with a generic atmosphere, bland sets and great villians being very basic any day. The tonal shift from Frontier to Planet is pretty much night and day in my opinion.
The Dr says he abhors violence yet when he first meets Wester, not knowing that he was friendly, the first thing the Dr does is to pick up a stick to bash Wester with.
So perfectly James Bond. Sounds like perfect Third doctor fodder, and they didn't follow through? I do wonder how many times they were tasked to find a new way to make a cheap prison. Weird to go 6 episodes and have no real conclusion. Planet of the daleks part 1 was my first experience finding part one of a doctor who story after years of only ever encountering part 3 or higher. I never found part two of this as a kid though. This is long before the tv movie or the reboot. It really worked a lot better for me then some of the later episodes I'd seen. Was the lack of the invisibility for the daleks down to sharing the video mixer machine with top of the pops? Also... How are you producing so much content?!!?! You must be exhausted.
Yeah, 'Frontier in Space' really does drag along... At least 'Planet of the Daleks' was a lot more fun, and it had me sitting on the edge in many moments!
I don't think you quite grasp the dynamics of watching these episodes once a week, no rewatches. Something like Frontier in Space comes across a lot less tediously viewed that way. For example, the spacewalk while annoying and diversionary AF when binged....would actually be the highlight of your week. Suggestion: pick a 3rd or 4th Doc story that's considered a classic that you've not seen, and watch it on a 70s tv schedule......teatime saturday, one episode, ideally with your mum asking whether you want peas or beans with your tea at some point.
Yes I'm a few years late on the comments. Everyone is too deep on this. It was just a bit of late Saturday afternoon tat for the kiddos imaginations. And viewing figures fight (daleks) against the only competition ITV.
Pity nWho never did a version of "War of the Daleks" a novel that follows this story up by revealing the future of Thal society where they basically become a mirror of the Daleks. That was freaking heartbreaking and even Tennant and RTD couldn't screw it up.
@@ItsButterBean1020 Mine is still trying to work out how a species that barely had functioning Time travel at its height managed to win a war against a civilisation that could delete them from history in 2 minutes and 30 seconds even with the most incompetent leadership possible.
Ian Warner to be fair they did spend a lot of time getting ready Plus even early on they had tech that could keep with the TARDIS (in the Chade) The main thing holding the Daleks back was then not focusing on a specific race (thru fought literally everything else at some point in time) and the Time Lords forbid themselves from using half their weapons early on (and they were utterly decadent from 10 million years of absolute power)
@@ItsButterBean1020 Its still the equivalent of the Spanish Armada picking a fight with a modern type 45 destroyer whatever way you look at it. The Daleks are not and never have been the Doctor's most dangerous enemy that would be a toss up between his own people and the Eternals.
Ian Warner except the many occasions the Daleks have been reinforced as right up there which we see proved by the Time War, the fact the Time Lotds predicted it and other stuff Also you missed a few with the Guardians and Sutekh
You criticise this Darlek story for its lack of originality - which is fair enough I suppose in hindsight. But do try to remember that, unlike the relatively spohisticated contemporary series, 70's Doctor Who was aimed squarely at a school age/family friendly audience and those kids were mostly far too young to remember stuff that was broadcast back in 1963 - I know this because I can vividly recall watching this story on the day it was first broadcast at the age of ten. No story line is hackneyed to a kid on first exposure. Furthermore, back in the day we obviously didn't have the internet and DVDs available to us and consequently had to consume our 'Who' literally one episode at a time on the day it was broadcast - while never expecting to be able to enjoy them again - the past is a foreign country they say. So stories that now seem obviously 'padded' when consumed in one long sitting were perhaps not quite such a laborious watch when taken in half hour instalments - as they were originally intended to be seen. But putting a old man's grumpiness aside I do genuinely admire your deep knowledge and intelligent criticism of this wonderful old series, and if I seem a bit defensive of the Pertwee era it is only because this was very much peak 'Who' for me for all its faults ... not that 'The Demons' is anything less than perfect you understand!
Yes this is one of those stories where the ambitions are hopelessly let down by the budget. It looks cheap and a bit tatty throughout. The guest cast don't exactly set the world alight either.
The entire plot of Frontier in Space could be solved if they put in some cameras in the Doctor and Jo's cell like seriously so much could've been revealed there and they have the technology for it but that would have been too simple wouldn't
Honestly Planet of the Daleks is my least favourite Classic Who Dalek story. Other messy and hokey ones had interesting stuff going on but this didn't, it's one great episode followed by five episodes of complete dullness and Nation on autopilot. It's also my least favourite Pertwee as it lacks everything that makes his era great and I dare you to find a story where the leading man gives less of a shit about being in it- you could tell Pertwee HATED the Daleks. This is a weak link in the otherwise excellent Season 10, and it gives Frontier a bad rap too when that's an excellent story. The Draconians are a fascinating race, the world building and parallels to politics at the time is great and the idea of a space war brought about by giant power blocs is a brilliant concept.
I used to like this channel because it stood up to the fandom menace types, but the more reviews I listen to the more I find you actually just seem to dislike most Doctor Who stories and I'm confused why you specialise in Doctor Who them at all when you're so critical of them all. I know some people say critics have to 'critique' but your reviews are so negative by and large I have to wonder if you ever liked the show in the first place.
@@MrTARDIS This happens every time I click on one of your reviews. I've not listened to all of them, but I suppose after feeling fairly upbeat broadly speaking about the most recent series with the only one I didn't like being Space Babies, and finding with this channel it felt like the only one you did like was Space Babies (or at least that's how the review came across to me), I guess I just feel like we live in opposite land even though we seem to share very similar views about the world in general. I'm probably being hyperbolic, but I did come away from the last few episodes of the most recent series really fulfilled and saw that you felt the exact opposite and it kinda dampened my spirits because 90% of the Doctor Who reviews I stumble across seem to just outright hate the show now and want it to fail. So to see a show I'm enjoying being widely demolished by critics it feels like they are willing on its cancellation. I understand you just want it to be better but I feel differently and feel that a lot of critics don't seem to understand this is more polarising and isn't as objective as it is made out to be. Maybe there are some stories you like from the classic series as well but I can't think of many, but Planet of the Daleks was one of my favourites growing up and this feels like you're totally trashing it.

The script: No. But actually, yes.
remember watching the planet of the daleks for the first omg it was the best dalek story ever still is in my book today
I have a soft spot for this story too but then I love the Pertwee era as a whole & all his Dalek stories.
“No other ship would be on a course for earth at this time
*we are on a course for earth*
Well NATURALLY BECAUSE WERE CHASING THEM”
8:26 - Haha, that got quite a chucke out of me XD
R.I.P Michael Wisher & Roy Skelton.
Can you believe it’s 50 years since Jon Pertwee came into Doctor Who? Wow!
at the end of episode 1 i dont think that the doctor is surprised to find a dalek on the planet, i think its more played that he is surprised they can turn invisible
The thing that sucks about Frontier in Space is that when the story is two and a half hours and most of which is spent with the Doctor and Jo just sitting in different prison cells, there's no excuse for the ending to be this cluttered and rushed, and the fact that it's the last image we get of Delgado's Master just makes me resent the story all the more
Anyone else notice that in episode one, The Doctor finds time to change his jacket while he's dying of suffocation?
I know of the legendary Jon Pertwee private cocaine party!
5:55 I can only assume it took hours for those Daleks to get up that hill.
"before planet of the daleks in 1963"
you could make a challenge out of spotting all the misspoken wrong years in these, I feel bad for you, I guess having to get these done 2 months in advance is going to do that to you.
How can the Dr not recognise the Thal was actually a timelord , the very timelord infact that gave him that face after making him feel giddy.
The new effects they did for the Blu-Ray were a very mixed bag this time around. Some I really liked others I hated.
@@Lumibear. The ship landing was by the far the best effect in the original show!
@@harrynewiss4630 yeh I was fine with it, save for the model was a tad under detailed, but that somehow suits the daleks.
Terry nation wrote the Daleks as a devious, scheming , malevolent force who could think for themselves. Also, the Dalek voices were all done by Michael Wisher .
I think you can attribute the fact he is surprised at the end of Episode One at the reveal of the Daleks down to A)The fact they were invisible and I don't think he expected that invisible thing to be a Dalek or B)He is post-coma, its possible he was still a bit out of it
Wow, 'Planet of the Daleks' sounds better than I remember. Another great video!
The pairing gives me an idea for a serial where the doctor is caught in the middle of a war between the master and the Daleks.
Probably wouldn't work in the current canon though.
THERE is NO CURRENT canon! We go with the flow
I bought the novelisation of this story second hand when I was about 7 and it scared the tiny piss out of me.
The comic Doorway to Hell gives this Master a good send off
Frontier in space and planet of the daleks alot and I am looking forward to seeing it on DVD at some point in the future
“John Pertwee’s private Cocaine party”,may very well be one of the top sentences spoken on the internet😂
This was a great serial. Blake's 7 season 1 seemed to take many cues from it.
Same writer.
5:11 got a good chuckle out of me.
I'm pretty sure that the Doctor was saying 'Daleks' in disgust not surprise.
I feel like it was surprise in that the Dalek was invisible. He knew they were there, but not that they had this ability.
“Jon Pertwee’s private cocaine party” ha that cracks me up
Also a story called story called Planet of the Daleks involving the Daleks no f$*king way!
I know what you are implying, but saying that "The Daleks master invisibility and we never SEE that coming into play again" is really fucking funny to me.
it's my birthday today :)
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday Master Of Dreams
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday!
Private cocaine party!!! Genius Lol
Can the Supreme dalek use it's eye as a flashlight by screaming?
15:21 Prepare for earrape. EXTERMINATE FOR WHAT?!
16:56 the second dalek bumps into the huge boulder and it moved, polystyrene boulder me thinks?
I will NOT COMMENT on this video no matter how many times you beg!!
Only just realised the masters badge on his costume looks like a dalek ahaha
14:00 the supreme dalek didn’t give the dalek another chance.
Yeah, 'Frontier in Space' really does drag along...
At least 'Planet of the Daleks' was a lot more fun, and it had me sitting on the edge in many moments!
This was the first story of the lord victorious
I don't think you quite grasp the dynamics of watching these episodes once a week, no rewatches. Something like Frontier in Space comes across a lot less tediously viewed that way. For example, the spacewalk while annoying and diversionary AF when binged....would actually be the highlight of your week.
Suggestion:
pick a 3rd or 4th Doc story that's considered a classic that you've not seen, and watch it on a 70s tv schedule......teatime saturday, one episode, ideally with your mum asking whether you want peas or beans with your tea at some point.
It probably would’ve been a bit of a better reveal if the doctor said they beat us here or something
Yes I'm a few years late on the comments. Everyone is too deep on this. It was just a bit of late Saturday afternoon tat for the kiddos imaginations. And viewing figures fight (daleks) against the only competition ITV.
There's something funny about us never seeing the Daleks use cloaking technology again
I like Planet of the Daleks
Pity nWho never did a version of "War of the Daleks" a novel that follows this story up by revealing the future of Thal society where they basically become a mirror of the Daleks. That was freaking heartbreaking and even Tennant and RTD couldn't screw it up.
My geadcanon is they end up becoming the Skaro Degradations
@@ItsButterBean1020 Mine is still trying to work out how a species that barely had functioning Time travel at its height managed to win a war against a civilisation that could delete them from history in 2 minutes and 30 seconds even with the most incompetent leadership possible.
Ian Warner to be fair they did spend a lot of time getting ready
Plus even early on they had tech that could keep with the TARDIS (in the Chade)
The main thing holding the Daleks back was then not focusing on a specific race (thru fought literally everything else at some point in time) and the Time Lords forbid themselves from using half their weapons early on (and they were utterly decadent from 10 million years of absolute power)
@@ItsButterBean1020 Its still the equivalent of the Spanish Armada picking a fight with a modern type 45 destroyer whatever way you look at it. The Daleks are not and never have been the Doctor's most dangerous enemy that would be a toss up between his own people and the Eternals.
Ian Warner except the many occasions the Daleks have been reinforced as right up there which we see proved by the Time War, the fact the Time Lotds predicted it and other stuff
Also you missed a few with the Guardians and Sutekh
Daleks are crazy!
15:20 mlg dalek lol.
How dud Skaro become the daleks home planet? That was the most confusing part of Planet of the Daleks.
But I am a noble of draconia.
What if he forgot that they were on spiradon
When he had that coma he forgot that they were there in the first place
I'm lean as fuck and when I pressed the like button it was number 420. 😳👀👨🚀
why is there no sequel of planet of the dalek.
DALEKS WILL NOT BE DEFEATED
See? This is why Daleks need more unique voices, at least pitch shift a few.
Pertwee didn’t like the Daleks. He said they were silly
I loved frontier in space but found planet of the Daleks so boring, really missed the space politics 😢
I think that story would have better as four parts than six. It was too drawn out.
Most of pertwees stories were fillers. They need to be re cut.
6:52 is that a fucking uruk-hai
I think it's boring.
"As the Dalek supreme is rocking some really awesome design..."
Ok I hard disagree here, I find the Dalek Supreme's color scheme ugly as hell.
@@lloroshastar6347 of all the reviews of mine you could have posted this comment to...
