I love the idea of the Scientist Dalek coming to the same conclusion as Sec and Caan and suggesting that maybe the Dalek goal of exterminating everything is a bad idea, and the Supreme Dalek just giving him a look before exterminating him on the spot, before declaring science illegal in the Dalek Empire.
It would explain why they gradually devolve back into using older models and lose their menace under Moffat's run.

I actually love the Paradigm Daleks, I really just don't get the issue with the colours. It makes sense that they would use bright colours to easily identify each rank. Honestly I think they would have been a lot more accepted if they stuck to it and explained the rankings of the different colours more.

Considering how the Daleks show up every series, and are very rarely as powerful as they were back in the time war, it’s understandable that the Doctor would stop reacting so dramatically to their comebacks. I mean the sixth doctor didn’t even bat an eyelid when he learned that the Master had survived being burnt alive because the Master had already been surviving ridiculous shit for the previous 3 seasons.

Screw the cracks and retconning 2 fraking Dalek invasions! And Waters of Mars along with the said 2 invasions, now that I think about it! Humans actively knowing about them with no way to hide their invasion could have so much potential...
Honestly, Moffat clearly doesn't want to write Daleks in any shape or form, except for street cred. The best Dalek story in his run is actually Davros' story.
I think Paradigm designs are ok-ish, but red being the drone (and thus, the main face of the daleks) was a bad decision. Also, straight up having no plan for eternal.

    • @calumbishop7082

During Moffat’s run the Dalek really took a back seat. And whereas the Cybermen got to shine by the end of his run.
Ironically this has left a situation where for the first time since the 2nd Doctor, the Cybermen feel like a bigger deal than the Daleks.
Despite all the criticism (some right, some wrong) I do think Chibnall understands the Daleks better than Moffat (just the scene of a single Dalek single handily taking out a UK army division was a better representation of the Daleks than Moffat’s run).

Something you brought up in a previous video on this episode, I wonder if this would have gone over better had it been expanded into a two parter. The second half is very rushed and if they had a whole episode perhaps the new Daleks could have made more of an impact.
On another note, I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but there’s a really well done fan video called The Dalek That Time Forgot that connects this episode with Journey’s End and some classic Dalek events as well very well in a very timey-wimey way and fleshes out Caan’s story just a bit more, and sets several events in motion. It’s really very well thought out and makes for a great addition to the New Series Daleks’ story.

The problem with the updated Daleks design isn't the design itself, it's what it represents. The Daleks are already a credible threat and don't need updating to be slicker and more dangerous. It's like the constant upgrading of "threat" in place of narrative content. End of the world < End of the Universe < End of Reality itself etc. It doesn't make the audience any more engaged with the characters. The creepy Daleks silently gliding around are much more sinister than the bigger, deep-voiced "new paradigm" because of the writing. Long exposition monologues are just lazy writing.

I genuinely love 80% of this episode, the crayola dalek sequence is goofy as are the space fighter jets, however even the part with 11 and the jammy dodger redeems that somewhat. I think the scenes in the war base were good and had serious potential for an isolated dalek story.

I'll be honest, I still really like Victory of the Daleks. I still like the story it's trying to tell and the new status quo for the Daleks it tried to establish. There are a lot of fun and memorable moments, and I do enjoy the new Dalek designs. While the bronze ones are in my opinion the most timeless, the Progenitor Daleks have kind of an organic aesthetic, particularly with the eyestalks, that really does work for me. I even like the color-coding because I did watch the Peter Cushing Dalek films when I was younger.
I feel like this episode could have been great with one alteration - instead of the Oblivion Continuum in Bracewell's chest, the Dalek Drone is sent down to exterminate everyone in the bunker if the Doctor doesn't back off. They could have the Breem character trying to protect Amy while the Doctor and Bracewell combine their knowledge of Dalek technology to build a weapon capable of destroying the attacking Dalek. Breem would get some character development, Bracewell's character arc still gets to end on a triumphant note, and the new Daleks would get to do something.
As it is, I do still think this episode is okay, but it does mark the turning point for the Daleks mostly devolving into a less credible threat in the New Series under Moffat's run. I'm personally still sad we'll probably never get to see the Progenitor Daleks in the series again.

If Jast or Thay had secretly survived in the 1930s, then Caan could go off and do his thing with Davros, while the other one spends 10 years finding the projenator and setting up this confrontation. Plus it would make more sense that it isn't considered to be a pure dalek because they were specifically designed to be different and "think as the enemy thinks." It doesn't involve time travel or have the "how did they survive a genocide that literally targeted their Davros cells" plot hole, plus the reason the projenator rejects them actually makes sense.

This is a great episode... until the Paradigm reveal themselves. Then it gets really silly and rushed. Which is a shame because everything else up that point is great, and I love the scheming Ironsides and Eleven getting genuinely mad and frustrated at their continued schemes.

I have very fond memories of watching this episode for the first time with my family. Absolutely loving the first half for everything you mentioned, then laughing together at the new Teletubbies Daleks. It's a shame, because for the most part the new design does look good, but the very vibrant colours just made them feel childish. I remember really liking the way it looked after 2000 years in the final episode. I feel if they had much less extreme colours they would have been received a lot better.

The NPDs were badly served in the first, mainly because the concept design was badly translated when the props were built. The neckbin being altogether too tall and set forward, the hump being too big, the plastic colour scheme etc... There are numerous fan images showing the original concept design translated faithfully and it works so very well.
They get a small redesign in Asylum which is hardly ever noticed, a smaller almost non existent hump, the new colour scheme... Shame they were discarded so quickly.

There's a theory floating around that the Dalek Paradigm led by the Dalek Supreme were in a war against the Time War Daleks led by Davros.
Basically the theory says that the reason Davros attempted to steal the Doctor's regeneration energy in The Witches Familiar is because he knew that his Daleks would never be able to win against the superior Daleks.
The Parliament of the Daleks (as seen in Asylum of the Daleks) was established to create a peace between the two factions and to stop the Paradigms from wiping them all out.

I like the Paradigm Daleks. Although only as high ranking officers that command forces of standard bronze Daleks.
Drones: lead squads and command ships.
Strategists: strategize new ways to conquer.
Scientists: experiment with technology and genetics.
Eternals: lead time travel schemes and are engineered to preserve the continuation and purity of the Dalek race.
All these having three to five Paradigm Daleks leading a room of the standard Daleks.
That’s what I thought they were going to do, but they show up two more times and then never show up again. We only had one episode where they were seen coexisting with the standard Daleks.

I quite like the New Paradigm Daleks, but "paradigm Dalek" doesn't add up. Paradigm is a noun, not an adjective, and it means an example, model or pattern. "Paradigm Dalek" just means "pattern Dalek"... which makes little sense. It needs the word "new" in front of it, to distinguish the new look from the "old" paradigm/pattern/model that it replaced.

Ahh...Victory of the Daleks. For what is essentially a remake of The Power of the Daleks, I still have a real soft spot for this episode. Churchill and the WW2 setting work really well and while redesigning the most iconic villian of the show's long history isn't necessarily a bad idea the fact they are so underutilised and only appeared again as glorified cameos really wasted their potential. That being said who doesn't want to see spitfires shooting at a Dalek ship.

So this story was written before Matt was casted, so this could have been a David Tennant episode. And also the Paradigm Daleks, do appear quite a bit more. It's a bit of a mess but it was nice to see the daleks actually out place the doctor for once. So disapointing that after the adventure game they failed to do anything with this design.
It might seem a weird thing to reccomend but immediately following this episode there was the kids comic the only good dalek and the free pc adventure games. The game has full (if woefully directed) audio from the cast, it explores the restoration of the daleks and skaro and gives you a lot more experience with the new dalek designs. It was certanly my reason for being really disappointed by this new series relegating them to being an officer class and then dropping them all together.

I can't believe they kept asking Mark Gatiss back to write more scripts after his dreadful track record. Apparently he can write for other things pretty well, but his televised Who material is DIRE. This episode starts well and I actually do like the humanity stuff, but overall his scripts for the show were spotty at best. And he just kept coming back. It all culminated in the monstrosity that is Sleep No More.

Its a shame some of the props were looking a bit worse for wear when you look at the vent panels on the three time war daleks, the state of the eyestalks (discs being dirty or out of order/shape) the gap between the eyeball and the discs having a metal ringer to patch up the eyestalk that had been battered by years of explosions and the dome being lopsided in some shots. The paint too on the skirt looks a bit rushed or done my hand, you can see flakes of gold on the neck rings and beside some of the orbs. No wander mof wanted new daleks. Weirder the eyestalk seems to have carried over the silver bit between the eyeball and discs when in RTDs era it was all black and shorter onto the new batch of props built for asylum.

This was a great story. I feel like it’s because people expect the Daleks to kill a bunch of people and be conquering tanks all the time that dislike stories like “Daleks in Manhattan”, “Evolution of the Daleks”, and this story.
The Daleks were originally portrayed as manipulative strategists in their original story. They weren’t advanced enough to be the unstoppable tanks most of Davies’ run portrayed them as at that point.

  • @timaustin2000
    @timaustin2000 4 роки тому +7

Yeeeech, nothing really redeems this story for me. So much doesn't make sense.
The design or creation of Spitfires in Space is not talked about at ANY POINT before it happens, nor is there ANY evidence that Bracewell has actually created ANY of the technology needed to produce them beyond sketching blueprints. And yet, AND YET, they're able to cobble together THREE of them, train pilots to fly them AND THEN launch them into space (a vehicle of that kind not heading directly up at supersonic speeds would take nearly an hour to reach space!) for a space battle all in less than 6 minutes!!! I just couldn't suspend that level of disbelief. It might look cool but it's utter bullshit and that was my over-riding reaction to them. Not "Cool!" but "Oh fuck off."
Then it seems that the story runs out of stuff to do. It stops dead for the bomb nonsense. The plot literally halts for 10 minutes. It's jarring in the extreme and shoddy scriptwriting.
And then they let a DANGEROUS, PLANET DESTROYING HUMANOID BOMB just walk out into the world unsupervised without any evidence that he couldn't reactivate due to "the feels" - I mean if warm feelings turn it off, what's stopping him blowing while watching a sad film? Or a Radiohead marathon? It's astonishingly irresponsible.
By the end I just wanted to turn it off.
It's crap. It's lazy. It's unfocused and sloppy.
And I've not even said a word about the paradigm.
It's a terrible story that was rock bottom for me,... Right up to Sleep No More (the second worst Doctor Who story since The Twin Dilemma - ask me what's the worst.)
Hey,... Who wrote that one again?

I really think this episode needed to be a two-parter so that the new Daleks could actually get the chance to do something. I know that Dalek two-parters had already become commonplace and it might be a bit eye-rolling to see another one so soon, but the alternative was going an entire decade without any good Dalek stories because the entire flow of their continuity was destroyed when they had to be retconned. I’m sure they had some good plans of where to take these Daleks, but since they were so poorly presented they had to be scrapped, meaning all future Dalek stories felt contrived as you didn’t have the single inkling of why or how the Daleks were at this stage in their life.
