I've been watching videos, trying to find one on how to make a stencil for paint, for two days. I've been down so many rabbit holes I now know I don't want to make DFTs, screen printing is a pain, and sublimation sounds cool for mugs and tumblers. This is finally a video that makes sense of it.
to prevent paint from seeping under the vinyl...1st coat should be the same as the background, then continue with the paint color you want to use for additional layers.
@@Expressionsvinyls using something like Mod Podge as your "first coat" works well when you are applying over stained wood. I use a lot of wood scraps that are anywhere from fairly new to 80 years old that we have laying around our barn. I love the idea of using the base coat color as first coat when I can but the Mod Podge is a game changer when I don't want to alter the color of the wood.
I've had my Silhouette Cameo for 3 years and just now branching out and wanting to try stenciling. This video was very informative and you have a new follower! Thank you :)
We're glad it helped! The hardest part is making the first cut. Here is a link to some additional videos to help - ua-cam.com/video/eb8o5zY9EVI/v-deo.html
I so love your videos! They're so clear and as a new Cameo user, I appreciate how you explain why you do this or what will happen if you do it that way, and your voice is so pleasant to listen to. Thanks so much!
Fantastic tutorial thank you. I'm looking to get a cameo in the very near future and would love to try something like this but think I would struggle to get the supplies I need as I'm in the UK
Good morning Jessica, thank you for sharing your beautiful creation. I truly enjoyed watching you create that beautiful wood design, and learned a lot from it. I have a question, I just received my Silhouette Cameo 4 Plus and wanted to create some stencils for glass etching. I've been looking every where to see what is the best adhesive paper/material to use, but haven't been able to find the right item and I don't want to use the wrong one for my project. Would you be able to guide me to what type of papers are needed for different project, more specifically, for glass etching.
Thank you. You really taught that well. I'm about to do my first stencil so here goes .... :D I'm already a stenciler (is there such a word?) so I have the technique but totally new to Silhouette and very frustrated. Thanks so much for the tutorial.
Great video. We are a paint and wine studio that would like start making wood signs. We like the Cameo machine concept very much. Does anyone sell pre-made stencils so we can see if our customer base would be willing to pay for this type of project before we invest in the Cameo Silhouette. We have the wood part under control just need to see about stencils. Appreciate any feed back as this is all new.
Hello! I loved your project and the instructions in your video! I am currently trying to make a stencil using my Curio and am having some difficulties, to the point of wanting to throw in the towel. My project is much smaller and I am having trouble keeping the middle of letters in my stencil. My phrase is "Beach Therapy" The font I have chosen has centers in the "B", "e", "a" "p" and the bottom loop of the "y". Other tutorials say to make a small cut in the letters, but when I do that I can't remove the letter from the stencil. I have no idea if that makes sense.... Anyway, is there a trick to getting the letters out, but keeping the middle in? I wish I could show a picture to better explain, but hopefully you can help me. Thanks!!
Hi Jenni, That is basically the only difference. There is Oracal 651 and we have our brand which is Series 51. It is also a permanent with a gloss finish. expressionsvinyl.com/permanent-adhesive-vinyl/series-51/
I just followed your video and I complete fail lol the vinyl pulled up my paint. So I'm going to make stencil out of card stock. Thank you for the video tho.
Hi, yes, you can do that as an option as well. If you have the paper backed transfer tape then you would just cut it like normal. If you don't have the paper backing then you would just need to make sure you are able to peel it away from the mat without ruining you design.
Love your video. QUESTION: Can you upload your own stencil design in the Cameo software? Apparently you cannot with the Cricut. I want to use our company logo. Thanks in advance.
Hi Trevor, you can upload your own images in both Silhouette Studio as well as Cricut Design Space. We have great tutorials for both of those. Hopefully this helps. Silhouette - ua-cam.com/video/dwWilv-DyF0/v-deo.html Cricut - ua-cam.com/video/8kchO8moHfg/v-deo.html
Thank you, Jessica. I now have Cricut Design Space and I have successfully uploaded a couple of my own images. I'm impressed with the software so far. Lots of great tutorial videos here on UA-cam. Thanks again for your prompt reply... ready to begin my first couple of projects. I'm 72 years old and beginning a new hobby.
I watched your video and it is very helpful. I have a question. You mentioned that the permanent vinyl is not "permanent" since it is used for just a short period of time during the painting of the stencil . Instead of using transfer tape, could I just the permanent vinyl, cut out my stencil, stick the vinyl on my wood, paint the letters, and then lift it up. It seems like it would be easier. I just wonder if I am misunderstanding something in the process? Thanks.
The transfer tape is so that you are able to move the image over to your project. This way if you are doing letters all of the letter pieces can be transferred at the same time.
What type of Expressions Vinyl do you use? There are so many different ones on the website, and I want to make sure I get one that is as easy to weed as the one you used :) thank you!
Hi, it is very difficult to reuse the same piece. The vinyl isn't designed for that. If you have a small piece with a very simple design it might be possible. Otherwise, it is only designed to be used once.
Thanks for the video! I'm having a terrible time getting my stencil to stick to my wood piece. And I'm confused about the purpose of the transfer tape--why is it needed if the stencil is sticky? When I try to use it, it seems to make things worse, actually peeling the stencil up off the wood. Help :(
Kelly, if the stencil is a pretty tight design, you don't have to use the transfer tape. The transfer tape just helps keep everything straight and aligned. What type of stencil material are you using?
i noticed that with the cricut you have to splice(not sure that is the right term) before you cut the vinyl. I didn't notice anything of the sort on the studio, is that correct before i cut my stencil?
Hi Angelica, it depends on the size of your image. If you want it larger than what the Cricut will typically cut then you will need to do a few different things. IF your image will fit and cut on your Silhouette then there isn't anything additional you would need to do with it.
Hi Terry, on the Silhouette we recommend a Speed of 7, Thickness of 5 and Blade at a 2. As always, do a test cut before because all machines can cut a little different. We also have all the settings on our website at this link - expressionsvinyl.com/machine-setting.html Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Depending on the type of material you are using as a stencil it can vary. Here is a link to machine settings. expressionsvinyl.com/machine-settings/ You will want to do a test cut prior to cutting the whole design. These are just starting cut settings and they can vary depending on blade, machine and vinyl types.
How would I go about doing a stencil using the Jurassic Park font? I want to make the middle red/thin inside of the letters red and the outside/thicker part white??
Hi, depending on how small it is, you would just cut it out and then apply the vinyl/stencil material. Once you have it down, carefully paint each section the two different colors that you want. Another way you could do it is just cut out the inside that you are wanting red. Apply that vinyl and paint that color. Peel the vinyl off and allow to dry. Then cut out the thin portion for the white outline. Apply that one and paint it red. The vinyl should be covering the red that you already painted so it will not be a problem. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Hi, for this one we used the removable vinyl which can be found here - expressionsvinyl.com/removable-adhesive-vinyl/ You can also use Oramask which is a stencil vinyl - expressionsvinyl.com/removable-adhesive-vinyl/oramask/.
