This is just how I find it easiest to do this and to make sure each letter gets the same amount taken out to look uniform.

I cant get my rectangle over my letters, it just defaults to the next psrt of the grid, is this option only in the paid version of studio desing?

Look under the edit tab and unclick "snap to grid"
