  • Here are some reasons I use micro four thirds cameras instead of full frame sometimes. Some obvious reasons, some not so obvious. Crop sensors definitely have a place in this world, and my heart.
    If you buy today's gear through my affiliate links, micro four thirds will make a comeback, the likes of which will shock and destroy your life. A low megapixel sensor that does raw 1080p 480fps that looks like oversampled ARRI footage.

      As long as you are stable in the video, most people do not look at the coners, don't care about coner gymnastics... Us non UA-camrs don't care. As a photographer (loser) I have 4/3rds cameras, crop sensor and full frame, couple of years back on a foggy morning, went out early and tested all my cameras (didn't have a full frame then though) and the one that focused in the fog and given the very low light gave the best results was a Panny GF7, great bit of kit, lightweight and great for street photogography.

    Kasey, you're right. One of the last few camera stores local to me, don't carry anything recent for Panasonic mirrorless cameras. Everything is special order. Truth be told, it is the same for Fujifilm, OM Systems and certain Nikon mirrorless camera models. Something has to be said that being a camera store business owner today isn't the most fruitful venture. I try my hardest to shop locally, but sometimes I can't because I am primarily a Panasonic video shooter.

      It comes down to shooting to the strengths, and avoiding the weaknesses, of the gear you have. At least with documentary shooting, you can fill in a lot of shortcomings with good lights. All good observations and reminders. I’m not sure why camera stores you note aren’t carrying Panasonic. When Wolfe’s Camera was still in business the owners mentioned to me that Panasonic is historically more difficult to work with for resellers than Olympus and CaNikon and Fuji. But that was a few years ago (pre pandemic). So far I have good experience with the new ownership of the OM brand so we will see. I also borrow FF Sony A9 and 200-600 for some events and I think Olympus lost their minds making the 150-400/4.5 for that exhorting price KNOWING that Sony had created and brought out the 200-600/5-6.3 for $2000 two years before they would finally have the 150-400 getting into customer’s hands. I’ve used the lens and it’s a great lens. Just not worth the price in this system IMO.

    What you need is a 2/3 inch sensor professional video camera with the Fujinon super zoom lens giving you the capability to shoot wide and close from 12mm full frame equivalent to 2000mm full frame equivalent, the 2/3 inch sensor gives you the benefits of doing professional work without sacrificing quality allowing for depth of field when needed but also maintain subjects in focus when required, the mighty 2/3 inch professional video camera sensor allows for amazing low light capability and impressive dynamic range great for Saturday news story on BBC.

    Even as a pixel peeping Tom, I'm okay with MFT. My Canon APS-C stuff has not been taken out of the bag in almost two years. MFT with a prime and a zoom is hard to beat for portabilityismness. Really good on more gruelling mountainy hikes.

    Actually this is what I do: I carry two cameras. I own two Canon M6 MK II just to put a wide and a long lense on them. Now recently I have moved over to RF with the R7 for the long lens and the R5 for the wider shots.

    • @WSS_the_OG
      @WSS_the_OG Рік тому

      I used to do this when I was getting paid for wedding shoots. It's too much like work though. For funsies / leisure, just one lighter kit is more than enough. A well chosen APS-C setup can be pretty light too, but not quite as portable as a well chosen chosen MFT lineup for a mountain hike, or something along those lines.

    • @simpletraveltech
      @simpletraveltech Рік тому

      @@WSS_the_OG Between the R7 and R5 there is almost no difference in terms of weight, lens sizes, etc. Especially if you use a speedbooster on an older Sigma 24-105 like I do. The RF 24-105 is smaller and lighter at this point. Also the 70-200mm F2.8 is incredibly small. I have like a small pouch from peak design which is just big enough to hold the two R7 and R5 each with the two RF lenses mentioned above. Of course I'm not a professional and I don't cary my tripod, lights and mics with me. I just grab that pouch and it's enough . They also share the same type of battery which is useful to me. I still can't get rid of the Canon M6 MK II. I absolutely love them but I rarely use them :)

That 75-300mm you mentioned sounds promising as a 600mm equivalent at the long end, regardless of aperture. Is that Oly the best *long* telephoto that you can get reasonably priced on the system? I just picked up a GH6 to replace my garbage a6400 and Sony apsc seems to be all but dead so I've given up on an A1 specced apsc. So far I'm very happy considering it's Panasonic with the usual caveats. I've owned the GH5 and GH5s before so I knew what I was getting into.
    The good:
    5.7k 60 and downsampled 4k 120 are gorgeous. Love it.
    Overall ergonomics, usability, menus etc are fantastic.
    The bad:
    AF still sucks. You have to work harder to keep things in focus. Not like Sony where you can just point the camera and forget about it. Though I really like the focus limiter. That helps.
    I don't like the position of the 2 front fn buttons. You have to jam your fingers awkwardly between the grip and lens to press them.
    The tilt up screen doesn't tilt up far enough to be usable for me so it's still flippy screen all the way.
    The battery life is slightly worse than the A7S3 which is a bit embarrassing.
    I had a tough time choosing between the 100-400s from Olympus and Panasonic. In the end I went with Panasonic (again) because of better stabilisation. Honestly it's such a shitty lens to use because of the zoom and focus ring. Such a shame. Please Panasonic make a 100-400 that's a carbon copy of the Sony 200-600 design but lighter and cheaper.

    And you keep forgetting one of the most important things about the Olympus is its low light capability
    If I wanted better vlogging I'd use a GoPro except it doesn't have low light abilities and no lens switching ability

    Wouldn't this be the smallest possible wildlife set-up:
    G100 with Panasonic 100-300 OIS (get the ii, much better). This lens is better than the Olympus 75-300.
    G100 has 120 fps 1080, and also a kinda neat fast motion mode, to catch hyper lapse. It's built into the mode dial too.
    Usually you get the tiny 12-32mm ois.

She says it changes with the seasons, and also that if you get there at the right time, the owner will be out playing some live music. You should have recorded that for us.

    Wow that GH6 is pricey Lumix are making a huge error abandoning smaller camera lines like the GX and G85/95 lines. The G100 is in of itself an okay camera that I’m sure is capable of nice images but it’s basically a G7 with an updated internal mic + 4MP. A Gx10 with G9/GH5 specs would sell big at around 1000USD be a good B cam for some and a reason for others to hang on for the GH6 to come down in price. There’s not really a stepping stone camera for the current generation like say OMD or Fuji have. Or Lumix could partner with a phone company and bring their video features there, some kind of plan would be good

    Boy that 75-300 is bad. Are you sure you did not film those ducks on your phone with a digital zoom? Decades ago I bought the first Panasonic 45-200, and it looked just like it. I could not believe they would release a POS like that at all. Then I saw on the web where people oversharpened those photos to the point where halos dominated, and they bragged what a sharp lens they bought, and then I understood blind people are a big market in photography. Why did you buy that 75-300? Was it the $99 price?

      I started wit a G7 as well. Its a great camera and still one of the best values out there. I have tried to save m43 all by myself and have since bought a G85 and a GH5. I love them all. The IBIS of the G85 makes it my go-to camera, and I still use the G7 on a tripod. Any of these bodies with the tiny 14mm/f2.5 makes a super compact vlogger.

    you should steal x-h2 from somewhere and quickly test it. 8k would get you 2x more reach when you crop to 4k , also higher resolution sensor could get you better video quality in 1080p240
