Canon RF 24mm f1.8 Shows Canon's Flawed Lens Strategy

- Reviewing the Canon RF 24mm f1.8 Macro IS lens. A lot of youtubers are going to choose this over the 15-35mm f2.8. Much cheaper and lighter, more Toneh, what's not to love? I will find something not to love :) We'll compare it to the legendary Voigtlander 20mm f3.5 to see if this lens has any "character". 3d pop, micro contrast etc. Canon EOS R still holding up in 2022.
We'll also talk about Canon's flawed lens strategy for the RF mount. Huge, expensive L lenses, and super budget f1.8 primes, and what I would do instead of I was president of the world.

The German lens maker contribution would be great, but not so sure about the Russian. Sure, we would have beautiful swirly bokeh even at f2, but the lens would attach to the camera with a light-bulb screw-in socket.
Besides which, the Nahansicht-Телефото lens would eventually declare war on the shutter.

The Canon R with 24/1.8 is actually the nicest setup you've used in a while. Colour, contrast and sharpness are very good, it pops in its own way.
You can't deny. Totally agree. Some of the best looking slowmo crosswalk he's ever done 7:00
Gotta agree. Footage was quite good.
It looks oversharpened and gross
@@davidm5790 You don't know what you're talking about. The sharpness comes from the lens, not software sharpening.
@@davidm5790 lol
man, the outdoor test made me love the Canon look all over again....
Really? He shot it at high noon and it looks over sharp and boring in my opinion.
@@davidm5790 Canon is amazing !!! In my opinion !))
@@davidm5790 You sound stunned that someone has an opinion that differs from yours. lol
At the risk of countering the primary point of this video, I have to be honest and say that 24mm looked quite good. Better than the Voight and the GoPro IMO.
The peasants will see sharpness as better :)
@@cameraconspiracies Let them eat Canon....! 😏
@@cameraconspiracies Of course sharpness is better. As you can make it unsharp in edit whereas you can't resharpen an unsharp photo.
(Yes, I know, AI - yadayada)
That's the best looking vlog footage in recent memory....
I think it's the wider angle contributing to that 3D pop, the way it distorts objects and still have toneh.
I feel like it's a combination of the focal length, vignette, and maybe even some barrel distortion on the voigtlander that's making the 3d pop.
No it's the low element count not attenuating the gain of the light signal. Modern lenses are filled with 15+ element prime lenses compared to the old 6 to adjust for distortion and chromatic aberrations but it comes at a real cost. Also affects the t-stop which no one talks about.
You are correct. Wide angle lenses have less compression and make things appear further away and smaller. Objects appear more spaced apart too. It's simply a perspective thing.
No 3D pop is operating at its best in 50mm and 85mm 1.4 lenses (And in some 35mm lenses but you're getting too wide at 35mm). Its harder to to produce a lens with the 3D in the wide angle, because you've got to let the Chromatic Aberrations fly. Its the 24mm that should have had the 3D pop at least been similar in 3D pop.
Hmmm….but can it 3D pop the zit on your ass?
Canon's decision to not allow 3rd party lens development, and insane pricing, makes them a non-starter for me.
It actually makes me regret getting an RP. Should have bought an older 5D
For ordinary man r8 + 24 1.8 (r8=1330$ in Russia ) + (rf 24 1.8 = 490$) = 1820 is OK. So,it almost the same price as new iphone.
Yup, makes me regret my R6. It works with my Sigma art lenses with adaptor, but makes them even bigger.
@procesgnilny Hmmm sigma ???? Why ?? What for ????? There are MANY RF lenses !!! And size will be minimum !!!
"Your budget options as a UA-cam criminal have now increased." - true my man. 😀
One gotta love him
I am actually using this on my R7. It's effective focal length is 38mm on this camera which makes this lens very close to human eye normal. If you haven't tried it on a R7 give it a shot and see how you like it. I am very much enjoying your channel btw. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip. I added an R7 to my arsenal 3 weeks ago.
Been saving up for this lens. I use the EFS 24mm 2.8 currently on my R7 and it's my favorite lens. The RF 24mm reviews have shown it to be as sharp as the 24-70 2.8 L which is good enough for me for the price. 24mm 1.8 with around 7 stops of IS? crazy. im going to shoot sharp images in a pitch black tunnel
“Not bad… I hate it.”😂
This lens actually looks very good and with great contrast and separation.. light, sharp, not too expensive.. super good
I was thinking the same thing, I thought it looked great haha. Especially for that price (considering it's an RF lens).
It is obnoxiously expensive when you compare it to lenses of the same focal length that you can buy for E Mount
@@davidm5790 They are expensive, yes. But the E-mount has been out since 2012/2013. If we're going back in time, EF mount is also quite affordable for the same focal lengths. Also, take new products with their new inflation into account when comparing prices from a decade ago to today. If we're buying things that now cost roughly double (like GPUs) and easily 20-40% more for everything else, why not apply the same logic?
@@KentSpain85 The difference is that e-mount isn’t phased out like EF, with no new cameras and lenses.
Also, fair or not, you can go out and get better lenses for far less right now with arguably better camera body’s all around on e-mount. RF has to compete with that, not go up against 2013 Sony.
@@marc.ristau There actually aren't many cheap E-mount 24mm lenses. There's the Samyang. That's it.
It looks fine. Not 800€ nice though.
490$ in Russia
That vlog footage was better than a lot I’ve seen people doing with an R5 and L lens. The IBIS wobble is hard to watch on the R5/R6.
The colours especially the greens is the best so far. Man my Sony really is shit eh at colours. This is the only regret when I switched
It looked so good that man @08:50 got off the porch to look!

Even through my aging eyes , viewed on my phone , in portrait mode , the Canon is far superior . I was very impressed with the Toneh at the beginning defore you stopped it down .
I thumbed up that comment because I thought it was sarcastic irony.
Pure gold - 6:09 to 6:48
Which reasonable priced Canon lenses have 3d pop or I need to choose sigma or Tamron?
I love this channel. It’s like the Hoovie’s Garage of camera channels🤣

Yes
Love your videos. Your humor is great. Subscribed!
Ha! Through in a "field theory" reference for Ken in the aether! :-) "You know this is good...." LOL! Halloween directions? Nice jump back into lens strategy.. I don't know, that XF56mm f1.2 is quite nice. Fun video. Have a great week.
The R with the 24 1.8 looks really, really good here. Damn.
This channel makes me so happy. The humour, the familiar Canadian accent that surely must sound like Terrance & Phillip to non Canadian ears, the constant references to Toneh… how did I even have happiness before this channel?
Your 3D POP is all about contrast beacuse toneh is very similar :).
yeah.. the only difference i see is the blacks are more rich on the voidi.. just crank the contrast up a little and it will pop much more on the canon.
@@MikedieONE exactly. It’s just a little more contrast that’s it
I love you so much. I wish you would do more squirrel and close wildlife stuff. That seems to be your wheelhouse to me. Your music is so good, too!

Getting into that point and shoot game I see 👀📷
First of all--that Clog 3 looked REAL good in the CU. Nice job with the grade, there. 2ndly: You are correct that the 3D pop exists and is apparent on the Voit. The comparisons you did illustrated this very well--but, you were also correct that the focal length was affecting the perception of depth (the main factor in the things you mentioned like the keyboard and chair distance perception). The differences that I saw were contrast, light fall-off, and wider color & luminance values, almost like the Voit allowed more dynamic range. That, I believe, is what 3D pop is. The Canon lens washed everything out, like a flatter grading curve.
That’s not how lenses work
@@davidm5790 different lenses absolutely have varying degrees of contrast and color saturation/registration. Comparing it to a flatter grading curve was meant as a sort of metaphor to explain the lens behavior that equals a similar result.
It's halloween times and the event at 7:14 prooves the presence of a vampire! 😳🤣
That said, yeah, great light-mooded point of view about current positioning of Canon with its lenses on the R system. Being a canon User for more than a decade and having recently moved to R, these have been my impressions too, sadly.
This footage looks fantastic.
This felt more like an advertisement for the Voigtlander 20mm 🤣 My first time on your channel. Awesome video. I just bought the R50 to replace my M50 and am looking for a replacement to the awesome EF-M 22mm lens I used on the M50. Though I'm still not sure if the RF24 is worth it, I enjoyed your video.
Remember that time when you filmed early in the early morning, and NOT high noon?
You need to check out Alik Griffin's blog. He's obsessed with 3D pop and micro contrast too.
I've been using the Nikon Z 40mm F2 lately which has a really nice classic rendering. Nikon decided not to go for perfection and it really does have nice character, and doesn't feel cheap at all considering it's all plastic, including the mount.
Agreed! Have that lens too and like it. Hopefully they will make some more classic rendering lenses
@@Someone_Else1 there's a 26mm FX pancake on the roadmap which could be interesting. He asked why no one is making f4 pancakes for vloggers but Nikon might be about to do it 😅
@@SamGrimes93 yes ill keep my eyes on that one
Funny as hell lol . good video dude!
Last June I was at a huge family gathering and the event photographer was sporting that 28-70 T2 Canon monster of a glass. It looked imprude...
Wow! For the first time ever I actually see a difference in the color and stab. It’s very natural. And as I’ve said in the past I don’t shoot video. At all. Ever.
Those Canon colors….
The problem with Cannon lenses you are discussing happens often with older established companies. The upper management is usually older, and not in touch with what younger customers in their market segment need or want.
Business Class 101 should include timelines to retire upper management.
Love your content but I wonder if the UA-cam algorithms know that I click on videos and watch a few seconds so they'll be in my history for later.
Hi Kasey, i have to say, the eos r looks pretty good.. for an ancient camera with a cheap ass lens…. lol Fitzgeralds hair was obviously ironed with a cripple hammer…
I shoot with Radioactive glass. I also enjoy licking the back element of Super Takumars.

Much like hotdogs, I keep coming back to this channel, knowing full well what I'm about to consume 😑
can you try it for astrophotography? been thinking of buying it mainly for that reason. What do you think?
That 24mm RF lens looks great and the 35mm f1.8 is even better. Sharp, and with a nice 3D pop!
The 35mm f/1.8 has some of the worst astigmatism and LoCa I have seen on a lens in recent memory...
@@ryankwan1934 Tsss... It just has character ^^
"I wear masks in a grocery store, but not now?" 🤣🤣
My man, I am nobody, however I would consider it a personal favour if you would test this lens with the Fine Detail profile, with the sharpness turned down, the contrast at -1, the colour and colour tone at +1.
I'm thinking of upgrading from the G7XII to this set up. ✌️
Why?
@@unbroken1010 That looks good on my G7XII. I'm curious how different the look is on this comparatively.
This is epic!
Perspective doesn't change from the same distance. Just the crop. You can't move your rocking chair further away just by changing lenses.
Great lens. I love shootin with it on my GoPro 10
Looks super good, when its not overexposed
Who has more 3d pop lens, zeiss planar vs voigtlander on 50mm f1.5 for both lens?
Haven't tested either.
''Agree with the importance of character and 3d pop, nowadays all sharp but flat.... could you compare the old 28mm EF 2.8 or the 24mm L with the new RF 24mm?
The background/horizon is more stable on the GoPro -- since that is what it stabilizes for, but the subject (you) are more stable in the Canon....
Love this lens so much.
All those inexpensive primes are the reason I sent back my canon. They all have a focus element that moves and protrudes out the front of the lens. Not even my M43 lenses did that. For me canon is either super cheap or super expensive if you need a decent lens. Canon also the only company to cripple hammer the histogram in video.
Canon is the best !!)
So great video again🌴🦜🐘🙅👍😀!!! You teatch us so mutch again!!!! Thank you! Allso you make great B&W monolog short movie Clip. Im huge fan of your movielike acting!👍
FIsheye confirmed best 3d pop! I carefully await the fish vlogs to come
The main difference in the photos is that the voightlander photos are a bit darker, it makes them look a bit nicer. That and the wider view, of course. I can still clearly see the depth in the canon images as well though. The contrast is slightly nicer on the Voightylander because it's a bit darker. Also, I get this sense of depth from edited raw photos I take with my Xperia 5 II as well. On my a7III I even get it with the sony 50mm T 1.8 FE lens. It's much more about what you're photographing then what lens you're photographing with.
But please ignore this post and keep chasing the 3d pop, it's entertaining... as are your videos in general. Never change.
8:53 THE PERSON IN THE BACK
I had the 24-70 F2, for like 4 days. Sold it again... R6 as well as the 24-70, both are just super heavy, totally not worth the "universality" if it comes at the cost of a telezoom lens with its weight and size!
But the 3D pop is a thing... as much i hated to repair my EF 50 1.4 "USM" all the times, as i switched to the RF 50 1.8, i really liked the much better sharpness and barely CAs... but something is really missing in the RF 50 images which the EF 50 1.4 was great at (also at 2.8+....).
Sadly, as much i liked the interesting look of the EF 50 1.4 images, going for a "better", sharper lens is still a good thing. Especially the RP and RF 50 is a full frame beast combo but tiny and light. Just because of the weight and size i would prefer the RP over the R and a modern RF lens over an old "3d pop" lens.
I tried btw for fun the EF 16-35 2.8 (no optical stab) on the R7... the IBIS is really great with this lens, anything between 16 and 25mm is also great for vlogging on APS-C, would be the EF RF adapter and EF 16-35 just lighter... completely front heavy and heavy at all, just too ridicilous.
Im wondering how the RF-S 18-45mm IS STM would perform? Im really thinking about this lens, not for vlogging not my style but as small general photography and videography lens on the R7 it could
Btw, why did you call it 24mm T1.8? It's not a cine lense, and T and F are not the same, T is usually a bit worse than the F number.
Toneh 1.8.
Can I purchase the slo mo music that you use and how?
My entire discography is here, 20% off vegetablepolice.bandcamp.com/
Truly a honest review Casey. Thanks
I wanted to get this but Canon files are impossible to edit. Once transported to the editing program the laptop fans take off and the laptop catches fire. I ended up getting a Sony instead, that is doing great. I have no idea what PC on earth can handle a 50GB 2 minute Canon video.
Any MacBook M1 😂
I think 3D pop actually has to do with LESS toneh, ironically. JUST enough of it. Enough that the edges of your subject (you) are sharp, but enough toneh to blur the background otherwise as much as possible. You should see if there is a "zone of maximized 3D pop" PER LENS. I dunno
Wow I do see all the pop it does look 3D big time.

3D pop is a myth just like "wider scene" among the audiophiles who buy $5000/foot cables

It actually looks really good! haha
Hey do you wear that necklace 20:15 on the outside of turtlenecks?
You are imagining the "flatness". Especially with the keyboard. It just looks a tiny bit closer.
It almost sounds like Homoeopathy.
Stick with the Voigtländer - More Cucoloris (tree shade shadows)
If anything had 3D pop it’s when you where in cLog. You looked very separated from the background.
I figured it out. 3d pop is vignette
The camera corrects the vignette and flattens the lens
So am I to understand that 3D pop is just a function of being wider? Because that's the only difference I see. You shoot from closer up to frame the subject the same size. The laws of 3D perspective in action!
I do wish Canon made a 20mm prime but they didn't even make that in EF mount.
Dam..., I see it. I see the 3D pop. It's true...
I will never retract my turtle again! 🐢
