V-log, it's a bit grainy, that's the only problem. V-log at 4000 iso on lumix s5II, it is grainier than sony a7sIII Slog3 at 12800 and my opinion is that Slog3 is flat enough. And that Arri thing on the gh7, it sounds good, but I think only in good light. Many Mumbo jumbos have lumix, it's nice to work with them, but the best image is from Sony, eg (a7sIII, Fx3, Fx6). Maybe if an S1HII comes out, with more advanced stuff and a more advanced dual iso, it could surely beat the Sony Alfa and FX line

Some of the points not talked about are the vast E-mount AF glass options, Cine EI / S-Log workflow (FX series), and the higher upgrade path ceiling (i.e. Venice). Most of these features appeal exclusively to professionals. But they come at a cost. I think Lumix is a W for the prosumer and below markets but there's a reason most professionals (especially video) pick Sony over Panasonic by far.
This is true. The upgrade path for solely Sony videography or even photography is great for professionals, which is why I do talk about Lumix needing to offer more here as they are very appealing for the prosumer/hybrid market, which is currently where I am. But yes I sincerely hope they develop the high-end niches further. In fairness to Lumix, I think their lens selection is expanding rapidly, they do have some incredible glass in L-mount from Sigma and Leica, plus you can basically mount anything on it with an adapter, and V-Log has been around for years with no complaints, so fingers crossed we see some competition in the high-end bodies in years to come. 🤞
Sony's interest is not to have a device that does everything at the best quality at a low price. Otherwise, everyone would buy it cheap and their super professional cameras wouldn't be sold anymore. One camera takes good pictures, but it's cropped on the video, another takes 8k but it heats up and almost catches fire. One can do 4k 120fps, another has 4k 60fps but it heats up after 20 minutes and stops....they release a firmware to make you buy original batteries, etc. That's the trick. You do your job, but don't be happy too much. Lumix on the other hand is struggling to come back to the market, but using sensors from other manufacturers, they will never be above Sony
I've been shooting with the Sony FX30 since it was released. But, recently, I too have been looking to go back to LUMIX. I shot a feature film with the GH5. So I am familiar with the LUMIX system. It wasn't an immediate switch to Sony. But, it was the AF that lead to my switch to Sony. But, since the S5ii/x with its open gate, Pro Res internal recording, and fantastic stabilization, shutter angle, and now reliable PDAF, I am looking to pick up the S5ii as well. It does mean a switch to a completely different system. But, from what I've seen of the S5ii/x, I think it's a good switch. When I make the switch is still in the works. Thank you! Appreciate that! I've heard really impressive things about the FX30, I will have to get my hands on one as admittedly I've had less time with crop sensor cameras over the recent years. I think it is a good switch too as you can probably tell, it was a big deal for me to do that as it was my first system switch, and it is a bit nervy when you're used to certain things and comforts from your daily driver after so long, but I have to say it's definitely paid off for all the pros, some of which you've mentioned, and any quirks or things I didn't know about, I got used to, but I'm planning on covering those in the next vid as I definitely would have appreciated the heads up on some of them. The autofocus is definitely more than usable now especially for video, compared to a GH5 or S1, for talking head interviews I just leave it on human detection and it does a great job. But definitely not Sony level of reliability, especially if there's lots of people in a frame for a shot. However, I'm still experimenting with the af settings to see if it can be a bit more to my liking.
@@thatjakegriffin Speaking of AF, I had the S5 for a bit. One technique I learned that helped, was when the yellow AF box was over the head of the subject, nudge the joystick on the back and you should see short lines on each side of the yellow box. Doing this helped the AF lock onto the person's head. I'm not sure if this works on the S5ii/x, but you might give it a try.
I use Lumix cameras. My friends had the Sony a7iii or a7iv. Always saying for me to switch. I always said if Lumix had cameras that had the same AF as Sony they would switch. So when Lumix added the PDAF I smiled as I'm saying more and more Sony users switching. Lumix is one of the most talked about brands over the last few years. So naturally any UA-camr who wants to do views and sub will pick the Lumix brand to grab some views. And make the 'why i switch video ' . Sony is being talked about less and less. I also said that Lumix would one day be the brand UA-camrs will switch too due to how they make great cameras for a price that can be afforded. The firmware update are always outstanding too. Now seeing top UA-camrs who sold the Sony or Canon brand now selling the Lumix brand to grab them views 😅😅😅
@@DirtyHarryCallahan44Magnum yes as those who talk about it just use the camera to talk to it. They don't fully get an experience of using it for shooting a wedding or an event. That's when they will know just how good lumix is.
I own both an S5 and S5ii they are both amazing cameras but the auto focus and extra features on the S5ii are simply incredible for my needs. The fact I can shoot videos without a gimbal when needed is amazing. I do most of our videos with my wife ( we are currently honing our skills for our business ) and tomorrow will be the first day using the S5ii on a gimbal for extra stability. This video is an amazing resource for those making the choice. Filled with great information and insights. I would recommend the S5ii or the S5iix to anyone looking to get a new or even starter camera.

Thanks Jake. I’m thinking about an upgrade from my A7R3. I similarly thought I should stay with Sony, given my lens investment but the only one that appeals is the A1 (too expensive) or the A7S3 (lacking in features such as crop mode which I like). I used to have a GH4 previously and liked it very much for travel hybrid shooting, so the S5 range appeals. I’ll need to check out the lens range, but your video gives me food for thought. Thanks

If you're invested in Sony like I was, my best advice as ever is to try the A7RIII and A7IV out where possible, rental etc, as well as the S5II, and see. I shoot Nikon and Panasonic. I've found that Panasonic cameras, and lenses, retain their value on the used market... surprisingly well. My old GX85 sells used, for what I paid for it new a few years ago.
Not really,Panasonic loose value very fast and you can see that with the new cameras like the s5ii wich I saw for 1400 euros and it will still go down. If you check Sony they still have the same price like the fx30 even in second hand still selling at high price
Panasonic needed to bring out the successor to S1H. Which is now 5 1/2 years old. Panasonic need to make a camera to take on the Canon 8k Camera which have been around for 3 years.

This Lumix is great if 24MP is your hybrid sweet spot, you get to enjoy the best of two worlds. the S5IIx and GH7 are also great as Swiss army knife's that can be used in much bigger productions scenario's, and save you time and money with little sacrifice on quality (choose your own battles wisely and you will be OK) . in the end it's all about your Eco system and needs. I think that you've made a great decision with your S5iiX. As someone who owned and used the S1H for several years I totally agree to your points! And even after I sold it and had been using the Canon R5 for quite a while (but just as a rental for a few months) I am kind of in a similar position like you were until you pulled the trigger. Future proofness, feature richness and cost effectiveness are huge points - the S1H kind of failed on that regard because of its high price, its lacking of a modern autofocus solution and last but not least its value in comparison to even the original S5. But: Panasonic is still cooking, it takes them a while, but they keep going strong. The S5ii is definitely the best bang for the buck at the moment, and then there's the GH7 which is great, I am just too much in love with full frame that I truly consider MFT at the moment. And I'm still invested in quite expensive Canon EF L-glass, which makes my decision for a new camera even more difficult. In that regard I am missing three things in the S5ii-series at the moment: Full sensor readout for 4K/60 (Canon R6ii e.g. downsamples from 6K which looks awesome), an option for 4K/120 (with audio and autofocus, but not necessarily in full frame) and maybe an adapter for Lumix L to Canon EF like the variable ND-adapter from RF to EF which is quite awesome. The alternative would be built in electronic NDs - this might be something which the successor of the S1H will feature. On the other hand all modern Panasonic cameras feature at least 4K/60 10bit HLG which is my favorite profile for quite a while now (before, with Rec 709 as project output I used V-Log a lot but at the moment I just love the comfort of HLG in HDR workflows). This is something which was missing on Canon cameras for quite a while apart from the R5C - and now R5ii is finally the one which got it and it's an awesome camera, but it's uncomfortably expensive - even more than the S1H when it was released and I lost more than enough money on that camera. Sooo... 4K/60 10bit HLG, in best case also 4K/120, preferably full frame, great autofocus for photo and video, at least 24MP for photos - this is my wishlist for a new camera. And in addition there is the question what to do with my EF-L-glass... (24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4. and the RF-EF VND adapter). Your decision shows me that it might be best to wait for a camera which fulfills my needs sufficiently but also meets my price expectations. I did get to try the S1H and I have to say I loved using it, but I can see, especially when it was launched, it definitely didn't tick my 3 criteria you highlighted as much as the S5II did, even though I really enjoyed using it. I really can't wait to see what they replace it with. And yes, the GH7 is impressive, but once you're in full frame, you're in! 😅 Your perspective on the Canons is something I admittedly don't have yet. I will be sure to try and get my hands on them soon for balance, especially the recently announced R5II, but yes, it's a pricey one! @@thatjakegriffin I'm honestly not sure whether HLG is even comparable to V-Log since they differ so much from each other. On the one hand HLG of course gives you that kind of baked in natural-to-vivid look (like a standard picture profile, just for HDR - which makes for me all the difference) while on the other hand with V-Log you maintain your most freedom for color correction and grading in post. But: of course both are picture profiles and you can just choose one for catching the shot. For my Rec709 projects I loved the freedom and the editing comfort V-Log gave me. But since I started working with Rec2020 HDR projects I was continuously hitting borders - you don't find any conversion LUTs from Log profiles (neither Panasonic, nor DJI, etc.) to Rec2020, so things begin to get complicated or just start falling apart quite quickly. And for that reason I just love HLG. It delivers these realistic / natural vivid colors - a look which I want to achieve most of the time anyway - it still uses sufficient dynamic range of the sensor and you utilize the beautiful luminance of HDR footage. If you edit with a modern MacBook Pro or on an HDR monitor with at least 1000nits brightness this makes all the difference. Theoretically "PQ" would be the more professional HDR-profile, but apart from Canon most of the consumer brands just utilize HLG as standard and it is by far sufficient for delivering an outstanding quality in my opinion. And I just like the idea of filming with the exact same profile on my Mavic 3, my Osmo Pocket 3, my iPhone and my main camera. Whatever this new main camera will be... 🤔
Nice video, I've used the S5ii and S5iiX for a little over a year now, and for the most part they are great cameras, although the new Nikon Z6iii has tempted me with what it has to offer. L mount definitely needs some more lenses in the line up, when it comes to wildlife photography!
Hi Jake. Looking forward to your long term review. One question though: do you ever have clients who INSIST that you use a Sony camera instead of Panasonic or another brand? It seems that here in the USA, production agencies want camera operators who shoot Sony. Or to put it another way, some camera operators who vlog talk mention that the reason they got hired was because they own an FX6 (or FX9). I am stuck between upgrading my S1 and S5 (original) to an S5 IIX or move over to Sony.

So personally, no I've not experienced that myself yet, however I know of the odd person who has, in fact another British UA-camr I watched a few weeks ago talked about how a client specifically requested the Sony Burano! Now there's an argument that you can just hire a specific camera if a client requests it on a one off project and you don't own it, but perhaps agencies would prefer it all being under one brand when regularly outsourcing operators, and that makes sense. But generally as a freelancer, my clients know nothing about cameras and so don't care what I use, as long as I know what I'm doing with it! 😅 As for your upgrade decision, definitely test out the S5IIX. I used the S1 the other week actually and I preferred the build and ergonomics, but feature wise the S5IIX has the edge, and definitely over the S5 as well, although I know of some Lumix pros on here that say they prefer the sensor of the S5 to the S5II range as a personal preference. As for Sony, definitely try out one or two bodies and lenses you'd consider purchasing and see how you get on, it's a small cost for such a big decision but it'll help 😊👌

Unfortunately, here in the USA, they Panasonic doesn't have the loan program where you can try out an S5 IIX for a few days (at least I don't think they do, will have to double check). The Sony camera I would be LIKELY to get (if I do get a Sony camera) would be the a7S III because of the full frame 4K 60p, the 4K 120, and the ability to have timecode in (and also, because it is Sony and they have that name-brand recognition, at least among agencies here). May I ask who that other youtuber was that got the request for the Burano??? In the USA, I think that owner / operators charge a rental fee to their clients for their equipment, even if they own it. Not sure how it works in the UK though.
Oh really? That's weird! That's such a good thing here I'd assumed they'd launched it in the US first, if not eventually. I can't deny that the A7SIII is a brilliant camera, and whilst I love my S5IIX, the things I do wish I had was less erratic autofocus subject detection, and that 4K120 ability, that is killer. And again, for that client I referenced in the video, it was essential, as they wanted 4K slow motion and choices were limited for that last summer. And yes the channel I'm referring to is called OBP, he has an S5II and has talked about it a lot, but recently replaced his Blackmagic Ursa for a Burano for work and has talked about it a bit now, really worth a watch 😊

Every negative that you will listen to or watch in a video will be what the user will like. Faster Af better this or that. For the price of the S5ii/x the camera is top notch. I have the S5ii and personally I don't find any negatives with it. I could be that 'I want more ' guy but know that if I wanted more then I would have to spend more. Recommend you try out the S5ii/x and see for yourself and make your own opinion
This is true. When I release my review, it will be purely based on what I get out of it and what I personally don't, and hopefully any viewers can take from that what they can relate to, but TLDR, I still love it, and the good outweighs the bad by far, hence why it's still with me today 😀 and yes, there's a point of diminishing returns where you spend more and don't get enough for it, it's all a balance. And definitely agree with you, my biggest help was trying one out for myself before buying 😊

Great video, I am also looking at buying a Panasonic S5ii to adapt my manual Zeiss Milvus lenses. Panasonic has by far the best focus assist modi! The shutter sound is also music to my ears. It just is a lot of fun shooting with this camera.
I have indeed! But I am eagerly awaiting to get my hands on one to test it out! Sadly however I think redundant video recording still isn't something they've implemented which would rule it out for me as a daily driver, but nonetheless I'm very hyped for Nikon right now 😁
Hi Jake, will you be making a video on “periphery” items a noobie getting into Photography and/or Videography would need/use? Plenty of videos on cameras, lenses etc, but I’m stuck on tripods?, lighting, light meters ( do you still need them 😬!) and for video I know from my youngest son capturing vods from game play… storage! What recommendations are there for data storage etc! As you are starting your channel I’m sure you have lots of ideas! Here are a few from someone who know nothing about the world of Photography/Videography. And one more! How can you share or even make a modest income from either!
Great questions! These are definitely some things I'm thinking about now as I plan out future content! I'd say there are some great videos out there by people already who have tested a lot of tripods and lights etc. but I would be happy to look at things I haven't seen discussed much or that I've had experience with. Also I want to have more discussion pieces about things we face as videographers and photographers, including costs and client management, so yes all valid questions! hello, it was normal to switch to Lumix from the A7III, this S5II is much better and more versatile and does not heat up. I have a Sony a7sIII and I can't say that the Lumix S5II is much weaker. I think the price difference is bigger than the performance difference. (compared to a7sIII).
Yes I'd agree with that pretty much. A7SIII does offer uncropped 50/60fps and 100/120 fps at 4K which is a big step up, but for day to day video features the S5II offers a lot!
I love Panasonic but they really need to refresh the gx85 gx850 lineup. Panasonics stability is exceptional and I honestly think they need to go back to their roots, small cameras with great video and picture quality that fits in your pocket. The S5 is certainly the best value for your money.
Lovely picture! And although I wasn’t interested in the subject too much (I already have S5IIx), the way you talked was so… nice(?) if not ideal, so I watched the whole video with a great interest.
Interestingly I have noticed some slight audio hiss, however I assume it's because of the quality of my wired lavalier mics which are quite cheap, and not necessarily the camera or the XLR adaptor, but truthfully it needs more testing with more types of XLR devices.

I actually touch on this in my newly published review video so check it out, but in summary, it's definitely been more erratic than my Sony A7III was, and certainly not as sticky or reliable as an A7sIII, so it's been an adjustment. I don't believe it's a problem though. It needs some finessing to get it to work the way I like and to avoid missing focus, but it's definitely more than usable. All my videos have been shot with its autofocus so hopefully that's a good indication. But even when it's not as good for some things, the linear manual focusing really makes up for some of its shortcomings when you're able to use it. 👌
Everything in this life is priced for a reason. There's no free cheese. And why fx3 is not dropped in price as S5ii orS5iix? Because fx3 has better value for most professionals.
Yes, it is priced for a reason. The FX3's build quality, and specific video and ergonomic features are in the $3.5-4k bracket of cameras, i.e. budget cine level. But that isn't the bracket of cameras and pricing I'm discussing in my video. My comparison was around the $2-3k bracket, essentially hybrid workhorse cameras, and there, the A7SIII has more value competition today.
mine stopped half shutter click focusing . it may be a setting that I changed but I cant seem to undo the issue, Does your still have focus at half shutter click?
Admittedly I use back button focusing so I don't use the shutter. If you have a look in the Setting Cogwheel Menu > AF Menu > Page 2, there should be a Shutter AF setting either on or off, have a look and see what it says. That's the only reason I can think of that it wouldn't be shutter button focusing.
the problem with this video, a lot of people are switching to Panasonic? you base that one a couple of UA-camrs that switched. sales on the other hand say differently. Sony is selling more every year. feature rich is nice. but when features are not 100% worked out, they are not features. Yes Panasonic is is one to look out for. but they are not there yet. there is a reason why a photo camera en video camera are different ones in the Sony line up. you don't speak about that. the video you post in your video which you made in England doesn't show anything. make a video unedited and show differences.
So my point was that a lot more people have made the switch over the last few years, not a comment on sales. You're right, Sony still dominate given their length of time in the mirrorless market. As for features, I can tell you that they are worked out. Trust me, I would not have left Sony if they hadn't, they had to at least match Sony in most areas before I would've spent the money. There are compromises of course, because there's no perfect camera, but the compromises were heavily outweighed by the features I've mentioned. I do mention about the point that Sony, at least on the photo side, can't be rivalled by Panasonic yet, they're rather similar and Sony mainly dominates there because their autofocus is better, that's true also. This video was me explaining months of testing and research for my use cases and needs, not necessarily to convince or suggest to anyone anything or argue one company is better. I hate the brand wars debate. What I love is being able to discuss all cameras and brands with people as they all do different things and in their own way. Hope that explains.
@@thatjakegriffin This guy is insufferable. You made a great video! I'm really just wondering about the rolling shutter feel. I've used M4/3 GH5s for years and they've always given me great rolling shutter performance. I know it'll take a dip switching to a full frame.
Thank you! Really appreciate that! 😊 Rolling shutter would definitely take a dip yeah, Ed Prosser and Gerald Undone have done some testing of their own and it's clear that it's one of its drawbacks. Although Gerald did point out that it was better than the S1H or A7IV in comparison. Personally, I haven't noticed it enough for it to bother me with the kind of things I shoot, (usually a lot more b-roll and static or slow shots) but definitely does have it. However, at least if you do need better rolling shutter, the APS-C mode, which you can also use for 4K50/60fps, is much better for that and you can get some slow motion footage out of it.
What does sales have to do with it? For the most part, Panasonic has ALWAYS been there. Their main issue for most was literally singular... their AF system. That's pretty much it. Well, now it's been addressed. Better late than never. ... and since I feel pretty confident that the AF system is more than capable now, I went out and pre-ordered a GH7. It will be able to give me everything I need and want out of a hybrid camera.
I just finished grading a wedding shoot on the FX6 and all I can say is that v-log from my s5IIx is way better than slog-3

For now, both systems excel in different areas, so the best choice depends on the specific needs of the project.
Some of the points not talked about are the vast E-mount AF glass options, Cine EI / S-Log workflow (FX series), and the higher upgrade path ceiling (i.e. Venice). Most of these features appeal exclusively to professionals. But they come at a cost. I think Lumix is a W for the prosumer and below markets but there's a reason most professionals (especially video) pick Sony over Panasonic by far.
This is true. The upgrade path for solely Sony videography or even photography is great for professionals, which is why I do talk about Lumix needing to offer more here as they are very appealing for the prosumer/hybrid market, which is currently where I am. But yes I sincerely hope they develop the high-end niches further. In fairness to Lumix, I think their lens selection is expanding rapidly, they do have some incredible glass in L-mount from Sigma and Leica, plus you can basically mount anything on it with an adapter, and V-Log has been around for years with no complaints, so fingers crossed we see some competition in the high-end bodies in years to come. 🤞
Sony's interest is not to have a device that does everything at the best quality at a low price. Otherwise, everyone would buy it cheap and their super professional cameras wouldn't be sold anymore.
One camera takes good pictures, but it's cropped on the video, another takes 8k but it heats up and almost catches fire.
One can do 4k 120fps, another has 4k 60fps but it heats up after 20 minutes and stops....they release a firmware to make you buy original batteries, etc.
That's the trick. You do your job, but don't be happy too much.
Lumix on the other hand is struggling to come back to the market, but using sensors from other manufacturers, they will never be above Sony

I've been shooting with the Sony FX30 since it was released. But, recently, I too have been looking to go back to LUMIX. I shot a feature film with the GH5. So I am familiar with the LUMIX system. It wasn't an immediate switch to Sony. But, it was the AF that lead to my switch to Sony. But, since the S5ii/x with its open gate, Pro Res internal recording, and fantastic stabilization, shutter angle, and now reliable PDAF, I am looking to pick up the S5ii as well. It does mean a switch to a completely different system. But, from what I've seen of the S5ii/x, I think it's a good switch. When I make the switch is still in the works. I think it is a good switch too as you can probably tell, it was a big deal for me to do that as it was my first system switch, and it is a bit nervy when you're used to certain things and comforts from your daily driver after so long, but I have to say it's definitely paid off for all the pros, some of which you've mentioned, and any quirks or things I didn't know about, I got used to, but I'm planning on covering those in the next vid as I definitely would have appreciated the heads up on some of them.
The autofocus is definitely more than usable now especially for video, compared to a GH5 or S1, for talking head interviews I just leave it on human detection and it does a great job. But definitely not Sony level of reliability, especially if there's lots of people in a frame for a shot. However, I'm still experimenting with the af settings to see if it can be a bit more to my liking.
@@thatjakegriffin Speaking of AF, I had the S5 for a bit. One technique I learned that helped, was when the yellow AF box was over the head of the subject, nudge the joystick on the back and you should see short lines on each side of the yellow box. Doing this helped the AF lock onto the person's head. I'm not sure if this works on the S5ii/x, but you might give it a try.
I use Lumix cameras. My friends had the Sony a7iii or a7iv. Always saying for me to switch. I always said if Lumix had cameras that had the same AF as Sony they would switch. So when Lumix added the PDAF I smiled as I'm saying more and more Sony users switching. Lumix is one of the most talked about brands over the last few years. So naturally any UA-camr who wants to do views and sub will pick the Lumix brand to grab some views. And make the 'why i switch video ' . Sony is being talked about less and less. I also said that Lumix would one day be the brand UA-camrs will switch too due to how they make great cameras for a price that can be afforded. The firmware update are always outstanding too. Now seeing top UA-camrs who sold the Sony or Canon brand now selling the Lumix brand to grab them views 😅😅😅

@@DirtyHarryCallahan44Magnum yes as those who talk about it just use the camera to talk to it. They don't fully get an experience of using it for shooting a wedding or an event. That's when they will know just how good lumix is.
I own both an S5 and S5ii they are both amazing cameras but the auto focus and extra features on the S5ii are simply incredible for my needs. The fact I can shoot videos without a gimbal when needed is amazing. I do most of our videos with my wife ( we are currently honing our skills for our business ) and tomorrow will be the first day using the S5ii on a gimbal for extra stability.
This video is an amazing resource for those making the choice. Filled with great information and insights. I would recommend the S5ii or the S5iix to anyone looking to get a new or even starter camera.

Completely agree, I can see how much of a jump the S5II was compared to the S5, and it really helps not having to use a gimbal all the time. It doesn't eliminate the need for one of course, but really does make it a lot quicker when you just need to get the shot nice and stable on the fly 👌

I similarly thought I should stay with Sony, given my lens investment but the only one that appeals is the A1 (too expensive) or the A7S3 (lacking in features such as crop mode which I like). I used to have a GH4 previously and liked it very much for travel hybrid shooting, so the S5 range appeals. I’ll need to check out the lens range, but your video gives me food for thought. Thanks

If you're invested in Sony like I was, my best advice as ever is to try the A7RIII and A7IV out where possible, rental etc, as well as the S5II, and see. I shoot Nikon and Panasonic. I've found that Panasonic cameras, and lenses, retain their value on the used market... surprisingly well. My old GX85 sells used, for what I paid for it new a few years ago.
GX85 is a beast and so is its cousin the GX850/GF9 my god the quality is exceptional for the money.
Not really,Panasonic loose value very fast and you can see that with the new cameras like the s5ii wich I saw for 1400 euros and it will still go down. If you check Sony they still have the same price like the fx30 even in second hand still selling at high price
Panasonic needed to bring out the successor to S1H. Which is now 5 1/2 years old. Panasonic need to make a camera to take on the Canon 8k Camera which have been around for 3 years.

This Lumix is great if 24MP is your hybrid sweet spot, you get to enjoy the best of two worlds. the S5IIx and GH7 are also great as Swiss army knife's that can be used in much bigger productions scenario's, and save you time and money with little sacrifice on quality (choose your own battles wisely and you will be OK) . in the end it's all about your Eco system and needs. I think that you've made a great decision with your S5iiX. As someone who owned and used the S1H for several years I totally agree to your points! And even after I sold it and had been using the Canon R5 for quite a while (but just as a rental for a few months) I am kind of in a similar position like you were until you pulled the trigger.
Future proofness, feature richness and cost effectiveness are huge points - the S1H kind of failed on that regard because of its high price, its lacking of a modern autofocus solution and last but not least its value in comparison to even the original S5. But: Panasonic is still cooking, it takes them a while, but they keep going strong. The S5ii is definitely the best bang for the buck at the moment, and then there's the GH7 which is great, I am just too much in love with full frame that I truly consider MFT at the moment. And I'm still invested in quite expensive Canon EF L-glass, which makes my decision for a new camera even more difficult.
In that regard I am missing three things in the S5ii-series at the moment: Full sensor readout for 4K/60 (Canon R6ii e.g. downsamples from 6K which looks awesome), an option for 4K/120 (with audio and autofocus, but not necessarily in full frame) and maybe an adapter for Lumix L to Canon EF like the variable ND-adapter from RF to EF which is quite awesome. The alternative would be built in electronic NDs - this might be something which the successor of the S1H will feature.
On the other hand all modern Panasonic cameras feature at least 4K/60 10bit HLG which is my favorite profile for quite a while now (before, with Rec 709 as project output I used V-Log a lot but at the moment I just love the comfort of HLG in HDR workflows). This is something which was missing on Canon cameras for quite a while apart from the R5C - and now R5ii is finally the one which got it and it's an awesome camera, but it's uncomfortably expensive - even more than the S1H when it was released and I lost more than enough money on that camera.
Sooo... 4K/60 10bit HLG, in best case also 4K/120, preferably full frame, great autofocus for photo and video, at least 24MP for photos - this is my wishlist for a new camera. And in addition there is the question what to do with my EF-L-glass... (24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4. and the RF-EF VND adapter). Your decision shows me that it might be best to wait for a camera which fulfills my needs sufficiently but also meets my price expectations.

I did get to try the S1H and I have to say I loved using it, but I can see, especially when it was launched, it definitely didn't tick my 3 criteria you highlighted as much as the S5II did, even though I really enjoyed using it. I really can't wait to see what they replace it with.
And yes, the GH7 is impressive, but once you're in full frame, you're in! 😅
Your perspective on the Canons is something I admittedly don't have yet. I will be sure to try and get my hands on them soon for balance, especially the recently announced R5II, but yes, it's a pricey one!
And completely agree with you on the 4K60/120 also, fingers crossed we see some positive steps towards that in the full frame market, and not just MFT.
And also really interesting to hear about the HLG profile, I'll have to give it a look, as admittedly I've gotten so comfortable with V-Log I haven't wanted to leave it alone! 😏

@@thatjakegriffin I'm honestly not sure whether HLG is even comparable to V-Log since they differ so much from each other. On the one hand HLG of course gives you that kind of baked in natural-to-vivid look (like a standard picture profile, just for HDR - which makes for me all the difference) while on the other hand with V-Log you maintain your most freedom for color correction and grading in post.
But: of course both are picture profiles and you can just choose one for catching the shot. For my Rec709 projects I loved the freedom and the editing comfort V-Log gave me. But since I started working with Rec2020 HDR projects I was continuously hitting borders - you don't find any conversion LUTs from Log profiles (neither Panasonic, nor DJI, etc.) to Rec2020, so things begin to get complicated or just start falling apart quite quickly. And for that reason I just love HLG. It delivers these realistic / natural vivid colors - a look which I want to achieve most of the time anyway - it still uses sufficient dynamic range of the sensor and you utilize the beautiful luminance of HDR footage. If you edit with a modern MacBook Pro or on an HDR monitor with at least 1000nits brightness this makes all the difference.
Theoretically "PQ" would be the more professional HDR-profile, but apart from Canon most of the consumer brands just utilize HLG as standard and it is by far sufficient for delivering an outstanding quality in my opinion. And I just like the idea of filming with the exact same profile on my Mavic 3, my Osmo Pocket 3, my iPhone and my main camera. Whatever this new main camera will be... 🤔

Nice video, I've used the S5ii and S5iiX for a little over a year now, and for the most part they are great cameras, although the new Nikon Z6iii has tempted me with what it has to offer. L mount definitely needs some more lenses in the line up, when it comes to wildlife photography!

Hi Jake. Looking forward to your long term review. One question though: do you ever have clients who INSIST that you use a Sony camera instead of Panasonic or another brand? It seems that here in the USA, production agencies want camera operators who shoot Sony.
Or to put it another way, some camera operators who vlog talk mention that the reason they got hired was because they own an FX6 (or FX9).

Hello! So personally, no I've not experienced that myself yet, however I know of the odd person who has, in fact another British UA-camr I watched a few weeks ago talked about how a client specifically requested the Sony Burano!
Now there's an argument that you can just hire a specific camera if a client requests it on a one off project and you don't own it, but perhaps agencies would prefer it all being under one brand when regularly outsourcing operators, and that makes sense. But generally as a freelancer, my clients know nothing about cameras and so don't care what I use, as long as I know what I'm doing with it! 😅
As for your upgrade decision, definitely test out the S5IIX. I used the S1 the other week actually and I preferred the build and ergonomics, but feature wise the S5IIX has the edge, and definitely over the S5 as well, although I know of some Lumix pros on here that say they prefer the sensor of the S5 to the S5II range as a personal preference. As for Sony, definitely try out one or two bodies and lenses you'd consider purchasing and see how you get on, it's a small cost for such a big decision but it'll help 😊👌

Unfortunately, here in the USA, they Panasonic doesn't have the loan program where you can try out an S5 IIX for a few days (at least I don't think they do, will have to double check). The Sony camera I would be LIKELY to get (if I do get a Sony camera) would be the a7S III because of the full frame 4K 60p, the 4K 120, and the ability to have timecode in (and also, because it is Sony and they have that name-brand recognition, at least among agencies here).
May I ask who that other youtuber was that got the request for the Burano??? In the USA, I think that owner / operators charge a rental fee to their clients for their equipment, even if they own it. Not sure how it works in the UK though.

I can't deny that the A7SIII is a brilliant camera, and whilst I love my S5IIX, the things I do wish I had was less erratic autofocus subject detection, and that 4K120 ability, that is killer. And again, for that client I referenced in the video, it was essential, as they wanted 4K slow motion and choices were limited for that last summer.
And yes the channel I'm referring to is called OBP, he has an S5II and has talked about it a lot, but recently replaced his Blackmagic Ursa for a Burano for work and has talked about it a bit now, really worth a watch 😊

Every negative that you will listen to or watch in a video will be what the user will like. Faster Af better this or that. For the price of the S5ii/x the camera is top notch. I have the S5ii and personally I don't find any negatives with it. I could be that 'I want more ' guy but know that if I wanted more then I would have to spend more. Recommend you try out the S5ii/x and see for yourself and make your own opinion
This is true. When I release my review, it will be purely based on what I get out of it and what I personally don't, and hopefully any viewers can take from that what they can relate to, but TLDR, I still love it, and the good outweighs the bad by far, hence why it's still with me today 😀 and yes, there's a point of diminishing returns where you spend more and don't get enough for it, it's all a balance. And definitely agree with you, my biggest help was trying one out for myself before buying 😊
The only negative is 4k60p is cropped but the crop is downsampled from 6k. Besides that panasonic is by far the best for the money.

Great video, I am also looking at buying a Panasonic S5ii to adapt my manual Zeiss Milvus lenses. Panasonic has by far the best focus assist modi! The shutter sound is also music to my ears. It just is a lot of fun shooting with this camera.

Plenty of videos on cameras, lenses etc, but I’m stuck on tripods?, lighting, light meters ( do you still need them 😬!) and for video I know from my youngest son capturing vods from game play… storage! What recommendations are there for data storage etc! As you are starting your channel I’m sure you have lots of ideas! Here are a few from someone who know nothing about the world of Photography/Videography. And one more! How can you share or even make a modest income from either!

I'd say there are some great videos out there by people already who have tested a lot of tripods and lights etc. but I would be happy to look at things I haven't seen discussed much or that I've had experience with. hello, it was normal to switch to Lumix from the A7III, this S5II is much better and more versatile and does not heat up. I have a Sony a7sIII and I can't say that the Lumix S5II is much weaker. I think the price difference is bigger than the performance difference. (compared to a7sIII).
Yes I'd agree with that pretty much. A7SIII does offer uncropped 50/60fps and 100/120 fps at 4K which is a big step up, but for day to day video features the S5II offers a lot!
I love Panasonic but they really need to refresh the gx85 gx850 lineup. Panasonics stability is exceptional and I honestly think they need to go back to their roots, small cameras with great video and picture quality that fits in your pocket. The S5 is certainly the best value for your money.

What about the known audio hiss issues...you noticed?
Interestingly I have noticed some slight audio hiss, however I assume it's because of the quality of my wired lavalier mics which are quite cheap, and not necessarily the camera or the XLR adaptor, but truthfully it needs more testing with more types of XLR devices.

Great question. I actually touch on this in my newly published review video so check it out, but in summary, it's definitely been more erratic than my Sony A7III was, and certainly not as sticky or reliable as an A7sIII, so it's been an adjustment. I don't believe it's a problem though. It needs some finessing to get it to work the way I like and to avoid missing focus, but it's definitely more than usable. All my videos have been shot with its autofocus so hopefully that's a good indication. But even when it's not as good for some things, the linear manual focusing really makes up for some of its shortcomings when you're able to use it. 👌

Yes, it is priced for a reason. The FX3's build quality, and specific video and ergonomic features are in the $3.5-4k bracket of cameras, i.e. budget cine level. But that isn't the bracket of cameras and pricing I'm discussing in my video.
My comparison was around the $2-3k bracket, essentially hybrid workhorse cameras, and there, the A7SIII has more value competition today.

mine stopped half shutter click focusing . it may be a setting that I changed but I cant seem to undo the issue, Does your still have focus at half shutter click?
Admittedly I use back button focusing so I don't use the shutter. If you have a look in the Setting Cogwheel Menu > AF Menu > Page 2, there should be a Shutter AF setting either on or off, have a look and see what it says. That's the only reason I can think of that it wouldn't be shutter button focusing.
the problem with this video, a lot of people are switching to Panasonic? you base that one a couple of UA-camrs that switched. sales on the other hand say differently. Sony is selling more every year. feature rich is nice. but when features are not 100% worked out, they are not features. Yes Panasonic is is one to look out for. but they are not there yet.
there is a reason why a photo camera en video camera are different ones in the Sony line up. you don't speak about that. the video you post in your video which you made in England doesn't show anything. make a video unedited and show differences.
So my point was that a lot more people have made the switch over the last few years, not a comment on sales. You're right, Sony still dominate given their length of time in the mirrorless market.
As for features, I can tell you that they are worked out. Trust me, I would not have left Sony if they hadn't, they had to at least match Sony in most areas before I would've spent the money. There are compromises of course, because there's no perfect camera, but the compromises were heavily outweighed by the features I've mentioned.
I do mention about the point that Sony, at least on the photo side, can't be rivalled by Panasonic yet, they're rather similar and Sony mainly dominates there because their autofocus is better, that's true also.
This video was me explaining months of testing and research for my use cases and needs, not necessarily to convince or suggest to anyone anything or argue one company is better. I hate the brand wars debate. What I love is being able to discuss all cameras and brands with people as they all do different things and in their own way.

Rolling shutter would definitely take a dip yeah, Ed Prosser and Gerald Undone have done some testing of their own and it's clear that it's one of its drawbacks. Although Gerald did point out that it was better than the S1H or A7IV in comparison. Personally, I haven't noticed it enough for it to bother me with the kind of things I shoot, (usually a lot more b-roll and static or slow shots) but definitely does have it. However, at least if you do need better rolling shutter, the APS-C mode, which you can also use for 4K50/60fps, is much better for that and you can get some slow motion footage out of it.
What does sales have to do with it? For the most part, Panasonic has ALWAYS been there. Their main issue for most was literally singular... their AF system. That's pretty much it. Well, now it's been addressed. Better late than never.
... and since I feel pretty confident that the AF system is more than capable now, I went out and pre-ordered a GH7. It will be able to give me everything I need and want out of a hybrid camera.
