With the spalting and grain pattern, that turned out to be one sweet bowl. The deep bowl and a fantastic grain pattern really made this bowl sparkle!!!! It was a real joy to watch you turn it. KEEP ON TURNING
It is pretty cool, Stewart. Not sure where this one is, it's here in the house, somewhere. But, when someone comments on it and I see that picture, it reminds me that it is kinda pretty! 😊
Phil - for the past 18 months I have done nothing but watched Wood Turning UA-cam videos - you are one of my top 5 turners I tune into. Well, in a few weeks I will start building (actually re-building) my shop and will start on first time bowl/box/hollow vessel turning. My story (to fill in some answers) is not really good so the short of it is that I had a shop built and had just received my new Nova Galaxy Lathe and my new Jet Band Saw - when (the same week) I suffered a serious accident that included broken body parts, brain damage and a coma - it has taken this long to relearn a lot of things and I am just now getting up the courage to re-build my shop. Due to the brain damage I probably have watched your videos a number of times and I have always learned something small and new. I greatly appreciated your tempo/pace of your videos and really enjoy your patter to what your doing. Please keep posting - I still have a long way to go in terms of re-learning. Always could be worse - I could be on the wrong side of grass :) Thanks and “Once An Eagle Scout, Always an Eagle Scout”
You've been through a lot, Robert and now you have a lot to look forward to. I cannot know what you have been through but I do know what it's like to rebuild the shop and have a place to go each day to create. Best wishes and thank you for taking your time to watch and comment! Phil
This really is a beautiful piece, Phil, and maybe even more interesting because of the spalting which I’m a big fan of and it finishes the overall bowl superbly. It’s a sort of bowl that feels very tactile because of the soft edges.. another fantastic creation and I look forward to the next one :-)
You are NOT the only one, but I'm so glad you chose my video to watch. We do need more women turners, though there are lots of very talented ones out there. Thank you for your comment and I think, by now, it's 2019 in Australia so Happy New Year! Phil
Phil, this is a beautiful bowl! One of my favorite things is old maps... well, all maps I suppose, if I'm honest. I find them fascinating. On many of the pieces that you have turned I have seen ancient maps of distant worlds. This one took my breath away when you put it on the turntable at the end. I could sit and look at that for hours, just imagining all of the places shown on that beautiful bowl. Thanks for beautifying our lives with your art, and warming our hearts with your humor. Blessings, Donna
In before you finish it I have to say that’s amazing because it looks like someone’s dented it LOL. Can’t wait to see what you do with it and as always it’s going to look fantastic no matter what :-)
Gorgeous bowl. I love the shape and the wood is beyond gorgeous. When you 1st showed the bowl on the bottom it looks like a seascape. There's the horizon line and waves coming in to shore. And the outside of the bowl a globe comes to mind with some continents on it. Must be my art imagination. LOL
How did I miss commenting on this turn when watched it the first & the second time? I love turned Spalted Maple, it just seems to have a special presence when turned, in particular when it is turned by one who displays such empathy with the wood that he works with. You are a delight to watch Phil because of the way you share your thoughts with us in tough turnings & easy turnings alike, you allow us to be drawn into your thoughts & feelings with every piece. Great piece wit quite stunning spalting shown up beautifully by your choice of finish. Thanks for sharing, I just wish I had commented much earlier. Regards, Don from South Aust.
Some folks think this one would be a good yarn bowl. I've never made one but I guess this has the natural void without need to enhance it. I agree with you about the Spalted Maple, it's wonderful. Thank you, Don!
Thank You Phil....always a pleasure....I appreciate your technique of turning, explaining, stopping and evaluating....starting again....I am able to understand your direction and why....very nice....tm
You know Tuffy, that is all anyone could ask for and I'm super happy you can understand what I'm trying to do and my motivation. My feel good comment of the day!
I really enjoy turning spalted timber, Mother Nature can do some amazing work on our behalf that makes a nice piece at the end. Bowl looks great. All the best from the UK Geof
Great vid, Phil! Thank you for the inspiration. I have a round in back, 18" dia, 24" length, butt of Norway maple tree trunk. It's been sitting on the ground out back for since Sept, '17. Am hoping for wonderment once I slab it out sometime next month. Excitement abounds!
Beautiful piece of wood ,the turning wasn’t bad either,I have been turning wood for some years but I didn’t know the little tip with the scraper, well done, stay safe.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Arturo! Yes, that tip can save a little metal and is quicker than sharpening. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you! Each bowl is different, of course. I go through several grits, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 240, 320 and 400. I would say it generally takes at least an hour and up to maybe 3 hours. I just don't keep accurate numbers for how much time I'm spending on a piece. I am pretty picky about getting it right so I'm sure I spend more time sanding then some folks do. Phil
That is a beautiful bowl and some wicked wood! Nice haul you had dropped off! I was wondering if you ever turn them while they are still really wet and dry them afterwards at all? Also I think your reasoning behind using tailstock pressure to get the front face of the jaws to seat really firm is more than grounded. And good save on the bottom by keeping your hand on the switch, you have some good reflexes there! It would have probably bounced twice on the floor before I would have hit the switch Lol! Happy turning Phil, keep em' coming! Kyler
Thanks, Kyler, for your great comments! I haven't turned but one or two wet pieces. It's fun but messy! LOL! As far as reflexes, well, you'll have to watch the video I'm editing, now. Not so much!
It depends on the size of the wood and how wet/dry it is, Gerald. Typically, about 1 minute on high, wait 20 minutes to cool down and repeat 2-3 times.
Hi Phil ....Spalting maple is so nice ....watching on You Tube many times and wish I had some ...then... ....friend next door give me a 12 foot log 12 inches dia !!!!!! couple weeks back all spalted maple !!! cut down last year . I have made 2 bowls , just cut a piece right before I watched you , turn it tomorrow . Still very wet but I super dry it very fast no cracking at all . That Howards stuff , just look at it on Amazon ...how good is it for direct food touch , how long for curing ? I know what you mean about the tool steel not holding it edge , from overseas ....I am going to make my own out of Cobalt tool steel , do not think there is any better tool steel . I have used in turning steel many times for many , many years , use it in milling too Beautiful bowl Phil , any shape looks so nice with Spalting is there
Hi Bruce! Wow, 12 feet of spalted maple! Good going! I don't know how the Howards is for food, but my guess is, it's fine. It's all natural ingredients. Dry time is about a half-hour. Curing time I don't know but it hasn't been an issue. Making your own tools is a real skill, congratulations on that!
Product info says don't use it on food prep surfaces, but use Howard Butcher Block Conditioner or Howard Cutting Board Oil instead. Not sure you'd want to ingest carnauba wax, not knowing how it was processed
I understand that, Phillip. First I said "it's going to be a natural edge" and then I cut it off! Hahaha... But, what do you think, now? It's still pretty natural, I think. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I truly appreciate it! Phil (Phillip) with two LL's, too!
With the spalting and grain pattern, that turned out to be one sweet bowl. The deep bowl and a fantastic grain pattern really made this bowl sparkle!!!! It was a real joy to watch you turn it. KEEP ON TURNING
Thank you very much, Howard! 😊
This is one of my favorites. The grain is so sweet looking. So dramatic overall. Again, you show your true talent in this.
It is pretty cool, Stewart. Not sure where this one is, it's here in the house, somewhere. But, when someone comments on it and I see that picture, it reminds me that it is kinda pretty! 😊
I love turning this type of wood. Spalted but not really punky! Thanks for this video it’s been a pleasure learning from you!
Thank you, Madonna! 😊

Phil
Like spalted pieces and that turned out nice, you are lucky to have nice people provide you with wood but you use them well so winner winner.
Yes, Lewis, I have the best, most generous viewers on UA-cam and I am so appreciative! 😊
Lovely spalting, lovely bowl, Phil!
😊

Thanks for the tip about scraper brilliant piece of work love the video's
Glad you enjoyed it, Alan, thanks for taking your time to let me know! 😊
Love it Phil that is a great looking bowl
Thank you, Bobby! 😊
You never fail me. Nice 😮
Thanks, Michael! 😊
Lovely Phil. I really like spalting.
I'm glad you like it, Tom, thank you! 😊
Am I the only woman in love with wood and wood turning? Love from Australia xx
You are NOT the only one, but I'm so glad you chose my video to watch. We do need more women turners, though there are lots of very talented ones out there. Thank you for your comment and I think, by now, it's 2019 in Australia so Happy New Year!

Great inspiration again🍻
Thank you, Johan! 😊 Cheers!
Very nice spalted piece
Thank you kindly, Kandie! 😊
Such an interesting grain, good job.

Donna, you make me appreciate some of my work more than I knew. I look at it a different way after reading your comments. Thank you! 😊
Love ❤️ thanks for sharing
😊
Not bad at all Phil. The funky spalting looks pretty cool.
Very pretty spalting: Just enough ornamentation to satisfy, and complete the bowl!
Thank you for spending some time with me, Stephanie! 😊
That was a fun piece of wood to start with. indentations to include, prominent sparking and little punk. Nice job.
Thank you, Gary! Cheers!
Beautiful piece Phil 👍
😊
As that piece turned, many possible directions came to mind. I like the way it came out, much different then I expected.
When that black line appeared across the bottom I thought it had cracked! The patterns in the grain remind me of maps. This is one to covet ❤
And as you mentioned about another piece, this is a natural yarn bowl, me thinks. Thank you, Ruth! 😊
Beautiful piece Phil. I love the spalting and the irregular shape. See ya in the next one
Right on, Scott, thank you!
In before you finish it I have to say that’s amazing because it looks like someone’s dented it LOL. Can’t wait to see what you do with it and as always it’s going to look fantastic no matter what :-)
Agree, I've always seen that dent. Pretty cool. Thank you, Martin! 😊

Awesome! Thank you, Glenda! 😊
That is a pretty piece.

Beautiful grain, love the simple shape,
You’ve done another great job.
Thank you so much, Michael!
I think it turned out perfectly! It has lots of personality! It's a beauty Phil!👍😍😊

All the best from the UK
Geof
It's allll about the wood, isn't it Geof? I agree, it's hard to improve on Mother Nature, but still we try! Thank you!
Wonderful bowl in the end!
Beautiful bowl...I love spalted maple!
I'm so glad to hear that, Carol! I love it too but it can be hard to come by around here. Thank you so much for your time and comment!
Gorgeous
Thank you, Gerald! 😃
Always a pleasure to watch you turn Phil and that was a gorgeous bit of wood turned into a lovely bowl. Congrats mate!
Thank you so much, Andy!

Hi Phil,
That's a beautiful spalted maple bowl!
The bowl is very natural and you did a great job with it!
Thanks for the video,,,
Tom
Thanks for watching, Tom, and your great comment!
The spaulting (sp?) is amazing!
It is!
Thank you, CC! If it's been laying on the ground maybe it will be spalted. That could be cool!
Phil

Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Arturo! Yes, that tip can save a little metal and is quicker than sharpening. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I love spalted woods too, Phil! And this one would make a great "natural" slotted yarn bowl.
Billy
Hey now, Billy, I think you're on to something! I knew it looked familiar, but now I know why. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very nice job my friend 👍🏼
Thank you, Tomas, for continuing to watch and comment, much appreciated!
You are awesome!
Thank you, Jordan, I'm glad you like it!
Nice job 👍👍👍

So interesting and handsome!
😊
Good job my friend. Was a rough piece to start with all the checking you had going on yet you did it.
Thank you so much, Al!
PHIL, LOOK GREAT, YOU ARE GOOD, HELL AS YOU SAY, { YOUR GOLDEN }...6/3/21...
😊
Beautiful bowl. Question for you... Generally how long do you sand a bowl like this? Thanks,
Thank you! Each bowl is different, of course. I go through several grits, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 240, 320 and 400. I would say it generally takes at least an hour and up to maybe 3 hours. Kyler
Thanks, Kyler, for your great comments! I haven't turned but one or two wet pieces. It's fun but messy! LOL! As far as reflexes, well, you'll have to watch the video I'm editing, now. Not so much!
How longdo you microwave your wood for bugs?
It depends on the size of the wood and how wet/dry it is, Gerald. Typically, about 1 minute on high, wait 20 minutes to cool down and repeat 2-3 times.
Thanks Phil
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
❤️
Thank you, Dianna!
Phil
Do you ever sell your pieces?
I can't but would like to, Roger. I just don't have time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I'll have a helper. Thanks for asking! 😊

I though your piece part break an haft but not , just grain of wood ...turn out a nice looking bowl .
Yes, I felt the same way, but it's just the spalting! Thank you so much, RR!
I will admit that when you started to lower the height of the bowl edge, my response was "NO!"
Looks like a broken bowl made from rotten wood.
So, does that mean you love it as much as I do or?
Beautiful bowl! Nice work.
Thank you, Ralph, truly appreciated!
