Turning The Impossible - Wood Turning
Вставка

- This piece of American Sycamore is the perfect opportunity for me to explain how I go about deciding how to hold a piece, how I might determine a shape and why and then progressing through the different phases of turning it to it's completion. I've always said I'm not a teacher and that will become woefully obvious as you watch. Still, I may have eeked out a few tips along the way. I hope you find this video helpful and can appreciate the nature in this beautiful wood.

Not a teacher??? What??? I’ve been a turner longer than most have been alive, but you teach me every week. You turn things most of us would put in the pot belly stove...and you make the piece suitable for display in a museum. And you make it fun to watch. My Thursday treat. Thanks Phil!
Wow, what a great comment, Jay, thank you! 😊
Totally agree 👍
Phil-I have been watching your videos regularly for the last couple of months. You have provided me great insights and confidence to take on a burl and turn it like you have demonstrated. I just finished my first such piece and submitted to a juried art show. Wood was a Buckeye Burl. I want to thank you so very much.
Great to hear, Eric! I hope you get in. Once you start turning stuff like that it's hard to go back to plain round bowls. Thanks for letting me know! 😊
Quick little story Phil, when my dad was quite old I spent as much time with him as I could, he loved going to a little restaurant nearby where he would have a steak. Each time I asked he would say the last one he had was the best one he had ever had! Your videos are the same, each one is better than the one before. So for now, this bowl is the best one I have ever seen you do. God bless you Phil, stay safe. Rick
Oh, gosh, now I miss your dad, Rick! 😊
Don't kid yourself, Phil. You are a teacher, an artist, a standup comic, and an entertainer. Thanks for finding all of the beauty in the sycamore. You're the best!
HA! You are too kind, Crystal, thank you so much! 😊
L
Wonderful piece Phil. Natures choice but I’m not sure what I see in it. Beautiful none the less. I still say you are one of the best teachers out there. If we would just listen. 🤩
Thanks for listening this time, Kid! Now get out there and DO! LOL! 😊
I love it! This one is awesome.
I've watched this over and over trying to see the bowl in the raw wood. I think you must have the soul of an archeologist.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Phil, there are several reasons why your channel is so popular. Among these reasons are these three most important ones.
1. you are a real person, no pretense.
2. you take the time to explain what you are doing and why, even though you have done it many times before.
3. you are honestly entertaining.
These and a whole bunch more is what makes you a real expert, whether you thinks so or not. Again you are not just a wood turner, but an artist. ;-)
Gosh, thank you so much for your kind comment, Robert! 😊
I totally agree Robert. Huw
Awh, Robert, he won’t listen to you. People been telling him for years that he is special but it just rolls off his back like water. I guess he is just a shy one. But I love him anyway! Hardheaded or not........
Love it💙
Very well said @Robert Weldon.
I love that it's important to you to have the natural look of the wood be part of the overall design.
Absolutely essential, Bobby, I'm glad you can appreciate the nature in a piece, too! Thank you! 😊
Thanks Phil! This was great and I always learn from you. Quite often, I find myself looking at a piece of wood, and say, "What would Phil do...?" Keep it up.
Very welcome, Garry, thank you for taking some time and spending it with me! 😊
Im in my 70's, female and wish i had been able to get into woodworking as a young woman ... another time and place then. Love your work and so enjoy watching what you make out of wood, what others can't see. You see the beauty that lies within, thank you.
I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to get into woodworking 50 years ago, Susan. It's not too late, ya know. I got serious about woodturning at 69. 😊
This piece is indeed more of a sculpture than a bowl. That said, Mr. Anderson, you have created something very visually striking, robust and yet refined.
-Doc
😊
I love that you save as much of the natural wood as possible! The “giraffe” looked more like a mountain goat to me.
Cool, thanks Chrissy! 😊
Beautiful piece Phil, today has been the day for me to catch up watching your videos and as always never a disappointment totally enjoyed them all.
Many thanks, Tommy!
Gosh Phil, you are so brave. All those wild animals lurking there just awaiting to take a bite out of you, and over 90% of the time you don't even wear gloves. As I said 'so brave'.
Joking aside I have turned a few pieces as danger filled as that lovely example you have there and have felt that bite when suddenly, mainly due to my own carelessness, the spinning jaws of some even maybe extinct animal, takes a chunk out of my finger.
Must admit I love these challenging 'art' pieces as much, if not more than you do. Thanks so much once again. Stay safe Sir.
Yeah, this one was more like turning a zoo than a piece of wood, Alan! LOL! I''m glad you enjoy the same type of challenge!
Phil this is one beautiful bowl! You are a teacher! Give yourself credit for the information that you display. 😀
Thank you very much, Theresa!
The wilder they look the better I like them. You really are an artist Phil.
We are of the same mind, Heather! Thank you! 😊
Wow, just wow! Gorgeous result. Have to mention, I too am a wood burner that can longer just throw a piece of "firewood" into the flames without first giving it a sharp eye for what may be a hidden treasure if given the chance to spin on my lathe. My building now has over 150 specimens awaiting their chance to show their better self. LOL I hope I can eventually get to them and make a treasure for someone to enjoy. Keep up the great videos. I enjoy being in your shop and learning from one of the good guys.
Wow, you're all set, Larry! Enjoy your turnings and thank you!
I echo the teacher comments here. To me the most inspiring thing is watching how much enjoyment you get out of turning. It's infectious. Also I catch myself looking at a hunk of wood and asking WWPD "What would Phil do?
Phil would turn it, Rick and he recommends you do, too! Let me know how it goes. 😊
You are so right. I ask myself the very same question. He is such an amazing Woodturner and an artist doing so. The fascinating craftsmanship he has already a vision of how the piece of log , crotch, or a burl the size of his fist, will look like. Isn’t amazing how quickly he finds his centrées just by eyeing it??
Phil, you are turning ART. I say that because what you turn can in no way duplicated. A typical bowl can for the most part be duplicated. Didn't know you are a wood turning artist.
Thank you for that, Gerald! 😊
You find beauty in some of the most difficult looking pieces.
It's usually in there, somewhere! Thank you! 😊
How could anyone not watch all your videos
That's what I'm wondering, Robert! LOL!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your beautiful work! I'm looking forward to wood turning , you are an inspiration !!!
Wow, that's great, Patricia! It's a great hobby but addicting! 😊
I like how you take scary pieces of wood and turn them into art!!!
Me too, Dan! Once you turn a few of these, it's hard to turn something round. Thank you! 😊
I learn something new in every video I watch of yours Mr. Phil
So good to know, Jeff, thanks for telling me!
Couldn’t believe that such beauty could come from this piece, complete with enough animals to populate a zoo. Wife now doubting that there will be enough fire logs left to see us through a cold Scottish winter!
LOL! That is the worst side effect of turning, Kevin, no firewood left! 😊
Awesome job of turning and instructing, Phil. If you don't think you're a teacher I'm sure a lot of us would disagree. There was a lot of great information in this video, my friend. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Wow, thanks, Gord! I did try a little harder in this one, I'm glad some of it came out. Take good care and stay healthy, buddy!
Phil, you are the master of the Franken-bowl..
Haha, I'll take it, Greg, thanks! 😊
Another beautiful piece of art. Thank you for your wisdom. I am 70 and getting a lathe something to keep me busy, looking forward
Wonderful! 😊
I just love your organic piece.
I'm so glad, Jennie! Thank you! 😊
Absolutely gorgeous piece yet again Mr Anderson, I would give it shelf space in my house any day. You are quite wrong about not considering yourself a teacher, but even more than that, you are an inspiration. Please keep doing what you do so well.
Wow, thank you for that! 😊
Phil, amazing, you left Mother Nature in her. Can't tell if that's a bear or a wolf. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, Marilyn! A lot of what is to be seen in this piece depends a lot on the angle of the viewer. You kind of have to pick it up and handle it to see what all it has to offer. Thank you for watching! 😊
I got your thinking and it was fascinating. Speaking as a teacher, if you're not one you'll do until one comes along. Good to see you enjoying your work and the bowl is lovely. A joyful splash. Thank you to Tuffy for sending and to you for sharing and see you soon.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much!! 😊
Phil, I agree with the previous post. I have learned so much from you. I try to watch every video you put out. I am a beginner and I have a 10 x 18 harbor freight lathe so I can't do the large pieces but I have a couple of Indian Hawthorn root balls that I saved when removing the shrubs. I am going to start on one of them tomorrow and see if I can put some of your lessons to use. It may end up the size of a shot glass before I am finished but I am still excited to see what I can do with it.
Thank you, Dana! Stop and look, often. You've got this! 😊
Beautiful piece Phil. Can’t imagine someone giving it a thumbs down. But there are negative people everywhere.
Thank you, K 2!
Phil, I don't know if you get notified of comments on older videos but I started watching you about 3 months ago. Now, among a few other channels, I'm going backwards to watch all the projects. I am just amazed every time! You spent time pointing out some features that we wouldn't have time to spot in the beauty shots and that's really cool! Until I get the nerve to try this myself, you will continue to amaze me. If I try a few times and fail...or succeed but find out how difficult it doubtlessly is, you'll amaze me even more. Your ability to read the rough piece in front of you is a natural, God given gift. I just love them all! And...you are a natural teacher. Maybe you don't realize it but your presentation is articulate and makes perfect sense...that makes it easy for us to learn by watching...only a teacher could accomplish that.
Wow, I don't know what to say to all of this, Max. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated! 😊
What a great imagination. From a Girrafe to a Crocodile! Never the less, it's a wonderful piece.
Thank you! 😊
Hi Phil, Another Masterclass from a Master craftsman. The bowl is just amazing and I saw the animals you were talking about except the Giraffe, it looked like a Hyena to me. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw
Well, giraffe or hyena, same ol, same ol. lol! Thanks, Huw, hope you are getting well.
Thank you Tuffy Marginez for giving him that absolutely gorgeous piece of wood. Phil, thank you for another stunning project and the lessons. I don't have the tools or a place to do this, but if I did I would probably be working in the shop anytime I wasn't working or sleeping.
Many thanks, J'Lyssa! Maybe one day you'll get the chance to turn some natural beauty. Let's hope for that! 😊
With a steady hand…… you do and I’ll watch!
😊
I do appreciate that you give more of a 'how and why' approach, versus some of the other channels that are more of a 'watch me make pretty'. You do a great job of teaching and encouraging. Thank you
I appreciate that, Rob! I'm glad you could get something useful from the video. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop if I heard right from the olive wood video, you're in Washington state? I'm in Thurston CO
@@robertbryant1204 Yes, I replied to your comment on that video. I'm in Bonney Lake.
Well Phil you did it again! Another beautiful piece out of the campfire wood pile. I love your work and your ability to see the potential beauty in all those cast off scrap pieces of trees. You are a teacher whether you consider yourself one or not and a very good one. Describing your thought process and plans for how to make the bowl are very helpful and educational. Thanks again for sharing! Well done!
Awesome, thank you, Scott! I appreciate your great comment!
You’ve done it again Phil you took a chunk of coal and turned it into a diamond, that bowl is beautiful I love it😻
Thank you so much, Maria! 😊
Phil you have the touch your eye sees the magic in the piece.
Thank you, Michael! 😊
It's hard sitting through the explanations but your videos teach as well as entertain.
I'm glad you stuck with me, Ivan, thank you!
Nope. Not ugly, not ugly at all. It's the kind of peice you could just sit and watch. You know ? Like a beach. You just never get tired of looking at it. Thank you Phil.
Cool, I feel the same way, Kevin, thank you so much! 😊
Beautiful unique piece Phil!! Always fun and a lesson watching you address unusual starting pieces.
Thank you kindly, John, for your time watching and commenting! 😊
The piece has multiple critters…owl, camel, bird, and more. It’s an imagination piece. Well done.
I'm glad you can see them, Nancy, thanks! 😊
I have really enjoyed watching the video I'm in bed with covid at the moment and it's been great to watch and kill the boredom I watch every week thank you phil
Oh, gosh, I hope it's not hitting you too hard, Roy! Feel better, soon!
Your vision is remarkable. Thank you for teaching
So nice of you, Wile, thank you!
The more intricate the piece of wood looks, the more you see the beauty in the rough and determined to unveil that treasure. Sure enough Phil we see the gradual beautiful transformation of this natural wood creation piece of art. An interesting conversation piece of art or to simply contemplate on it’s beauty. Phil always my mentor, my inspiration, my go to for my questions. Thank you for you sharing your work, talent and tricks of the trade.
I appreciate your time, Sylvie, watching and commenting on my videos!
Phil I wouldn't have thought to make the top of the bowl like you did. Turned out great! I do more and more natural turnings any more because of you. Thanks for all of the many hours of videos you have put together.
Cool, thanks, Doyle! 😊
My neighbors are always bringing me interesting shaped or or colored wood. I keep them all and initiate them into my decor. Love what you do.
Cool neighbors! Thank you, Peggy!
It always amazes me how you take a gnarly old burl,(which are pretty cool on their own) and turn them into beautiful pieces of art.
I feel the same way and that's what makes it fun! Thank you!
This is one of those pieces that amazes me to see what you see in a chunk of wood. Another beautiful job!!!
Thank you so much, Greg!
Very interesting ending to a mean piece. I love the way you teach without teaching
I'm glad you like it, Garth, thank you!
I like watching a real craftsman my husband was a builder I lost him 3 years ago, again I love your work no drama because you are a craftsman. ALOHA
Thank you, Nancy! 😊
You’re a real natural Phil, in many ways.
A piece of Ark? I can see all kinds of animals. Lovely work. Thanks for sharing.
HA! I'll take a piece of Ark, Aranka. I wish I would have said that in the video! 😊
Phil, you may not consider yourself a teacher, but there's a load of education in this one. Well done, sir. Happy New Year!
Thank you so much, James and a Happy New Year to you, as well! 😊
I agree
Ух Ты Фил! В твоих руках невозможное становится возможным! Wow Phil! In your hands, the impossible becomes possible!
HA! Thank you, Ivan! 😊
Simply stunning....you are one of the best teachers I have ever come across..so much to learn from watching your videos.
Wow, thank you, David!
New subscribe here, you know they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all I see in your work is beauty. Now its time to start binge watching your videos thanks.
Wow, thank you, Mike! I will try to be worthy of your subscription.
The weirder the wood, the happier the result. I just can't pass up working on the same sort of pieces that you seem to enjoy, so it is a real treat to watch you do your thing. My Dad was an engineer at 3M, and he used to work in abrasives, so I still have boxes of stuff squirreled away from the "old" days when everything wasn't so tight. That's been a real help, as everything costs so much now, even sandpaper that used to be worth pennies.
You are lucky to have that stash, William! Thank you!
Stunning piece phil, you have also inspired me to look at wood in a different way,you are a great teacher
Awesome, thank you! 😊
Phil. Your videos are a joy to watch. Plenty of comments and education guidance. Yet not too much. You are my favorite. You don't juat turn a piece but you are always answering the why quedtion. You are talking like we are standing right beside you. Always looking forward to your next post. Someday I would love to purchase one of your works and meet you in person. God Bless.
Awesome, thank you, Alan! Wouldn't it be great if we could all meet up? I'd love that! 😊
That piece is just gorgeous. Rustic with all the elements you would want in a show piece.
Glad you like it, Mark, thank you!

I love your videos! They are so satisfying to watch. I would never attempt doing this but enjoy the heck out of watching.
Glad you love them, Jan, thank you very much! 😊
You have surpassed yourself sir.
Greetings from Victoria, Australia.
Thanks and welcome all the way from Australia! 😊
I love how it turned put! So much character. I do see the giraffe, koala and wolf. Very nice.
Wonderful, thank you, Karen! 😊
Thank you, Phil! My favorite so far! Your "I'm not a teacher...." statement made me smile! You're a great teacher and I appreciate your detailed "thinking out loud". Very helpful to this beginner. Cheers, Pete
Wow, thank you, Peter! I'm glad I can help. 😊
Phil you are a wizard with these unusual / fascinating pieces of wood. The result is a work of art as well as a wonderful piece of turning. Thanks for inspiring and entertaining us blokes who aspire to produce wonderful pieces. IAN
Many thanks, Ian! 😊
Want to thank You, have been looking at a bunch of burls sitting in my shop and was puzzled at best on how to proceed, You have made my day! Thanks so much for all your input, You really have done some incredibly beautiful pieces! Thanks Again
You're very welcome, Robert! So good to know you will be trying new things. These type of pieces are so rewarding, I'm sure you will feel the same way.
I have been watching other "turners" and I admire their talent and some of their work but unfortunately they just don't add up to you! You are so far above them as far as I am concerned.
You teach, you inspire, you bring out the beauty in each piece of wood you are working on.
And you are simply a joy!
Thank you!!

Oh my gosh, thank you, Colleen, you make me smile this morning! 😊
I applaud your tenacity Phil, I for sure would have thrown this one away. Nice work pulling it from dire straights!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Gary, thanks for watching!
Absolutely stunning Mr.Phil, sorry I missed some of your videos been down with my back since January 1st , take care my friend god bless
No worries, Donald, I know how that can be. Hopefully you are on the mend. Take good care, my friend! 😊
Of all the projects of yours I have seen so far, this one is the best. It fits my personality.
Outstanding work.
Wow, thank you, Paul! I'm so glad you like it, me too! 😊
Phil I never turned a live edge bowl until I started watching your channel. I've now turned several
Excellent, this makes me so happy, thank you, a b! 😊
I love watching your videos, they are quite relaxing and educational. Thank you and God Bless!
So nice of you, Nathan, thank you!
WOW Phil, I see the same things you did and I LOVE it. A very interesting bowl. 💖
Thanks so much, Marge! I'm glad you could see some of the menagerie. 😊
So many animals in this piece of organic! Amazing!
This is certainly one of the most irregularly shaped pieces, which I have seen turned! Well done on preserving so much of the original, while shedding light on the hidden!
Thank you, Stephanie! 😊
You seriously should have a million subscribers. 👍
You are too kind, thank you! 😊
PHil, I just have to say that you take the improbable and make it possible. What a wonderful art piece. When you are cutting lots of air, you get way less kick back or bounce with your gouge than I get. I have tried to match your angle, be open to about 1:30, and go slow. Is there a secret that I'm missing. Of course if it's a secret you can't tell. My shop is colder because my woodpile has become an "opportunity". Thank you so much for being willing to share you knowledge and help some of us to be willing to explore.
Thank you so much, Tom! I can only guess you are trying to take too much wood at a time. Going slow is good but try taking a lighter cut. I find it amazing how quickly the wood comes off, even at 500 rpm but still with a light touch. You only want to use that sharp edge, not the whole gouge. You've got this! I love your comment about the cold shop. I've done my job! LOL!
What an unusual piece but beautiful in its own right. ♥😺♥
I think so too, Joalla, thank you very much!! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Tuffy....WOW Phil I seriously NEVER EVER thought that obnoxious piece of Sycamore would ever end up on your lathe. Now I see anything is possible. NOTHING is off the table in Phil's shop. Phil you really shine on those unusual pieces, I could feel your enthusiasm. Looks like I should have included a "bark collar" with this piece. This throw-a-way piece of American Sycamore spent its entire life looking up at the UC Berkeley Bell Tower. I think you gave it a wonderful second life Phil.....TM
Thank you, Tuffy, for the wood, the labor AND the history! That makes each piece more important and interesting to me. I have to be in the right mood to handle a piece like this, especially the bark, but it's sooo worth it in the end!
It's another WOW! Phil. You never cease to amaze me!
Cool! Thanks, Tom!
Wow, again a fantastic piece! 🙏
Thank you, Thomas! Cheers! 😊
I really enjoyed this. I like looking at wood turning as art and letting the wood tell me what shape it should be. You knocked this one out of the park.
Awesome, thank you, Matt!
A true master. An inspiration to us all.
Thank you so much, Steve! 😊
Phil
Wow! This is the type of work I want to learn to turn. I have learned so much by watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills.
Great to hear, Rocio! Nothing much to learn, just mount it and start turning! 😊 Learn as you go.
Phil, that looked like a challenging piece but you have the patience and skill to turn it into something beautiful with tons of interesting features and undoubtedly a real conversation piece.
I'm glad you see all of that, Neil, thank you so much!
You have an absolute talent for seeing inside the piece. Absolutely amazing.
Thank you so much, Todd!
Not something I’d want in my home but only because it wouldn’t suit my decor but man I can certainly appreciate the beauty of it.
Cool, I'm glad you like the unusual nature of this piece, Ellejay.
Yep a Wolf howling the Moon .. great ! Beautiful Piece !
😊
I thought it was beautiful before you turned it! Afterward well, I thought I could see it as a centerpiece on a living room table or something.
That's a perfect use for a piece like this, M F. That's how I see it, too!
Phil, I just love the way you enticed the beauty of the wood from this gnarly piece of Sycamore. In awe of your skill and vision.
Thank you very much, Barry! 😊
Phil I just recently found you and you don't shy away from any piece of wood that's what I enjoy about you and your very informative on what you're doing.
Thank you very much, Tom! 😊
Phil, I am a turner who really appreciates unusual pieces. This is for sure fitting in that category and I love it. I find myself watching one of your videos and then going to my wood pile and trying to see what I have to simulate what you have done. I admire your work so keep up the good work!!!
Wonderful, Charles! There are all kinds of jewels just waiting to be turned. Thank you for watching! 😊
Phil you are a great master in doing rough turning, this is a magnificent and spectacular piece of art. Wow just awesome and stunningly beautiful.
Thank you very much, Kobie! 😊
THanks PHil. Great job again. LOve the finish. LOts to see on this one.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ron, thank you so much!
Bravo Phil, you show me again one of these nice pieces I love. 👍
