The notes in between are actually Dave Mustaine.
I see what you did there 😂
XDD
i got it
No way... It's you again
LMAO I love Kirk and Metallica but this was hilarious!! XD
Anyone who has played guitar has had a moment like this one lmao.
Nolan Brown Fuck off.
Nolan Brown i think its a dope riff, whats your fav metallica riff tho?
Mine is in Creeping death when DIE DIE DIE kicks in
I have had one of these moments for sure but he doesn't need to be a wahmett
Hammett has these moments 365 days a year. He should hire a lead guitarist. He can with all the money he's made off of retarded Metallica fans.
yeah when i was a beginner
He would have gotten it instantly if he had the wah
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
🤣🤣 this comment just made my day 🤣🤣
If he had wah, he would've hide every mistake with it🤣🤣
😂😂😂😆
Lmao
When you're stuck and everybody is looking at you to get it right, you're NOT going to get it right. Add shyness to the mix and you have this. I've had moments like this during presentations.
+Ceyda Charming I know
I felt this way many times too. Embarassing. :/
+Ceyda Charming Oh god, been there. I always try to have my s**t nailed down before we ever rehearse for this very reason. I'm not much of an improv guy, I have loads of respect for people that can do that.
I kind of got used to it when we have rehearsals in my band. I'm always the one holding back.
TRUE
This is what happens when you don't let your lead guitarist solo
Brad Ballanger lmao
You v made my day)
Brad Ballanger song
I think Kirk got shit on the most when they were working on St Anger.
So true!
So funny how James is referring to the frets as "this one" and "that one." Like trying to teach a child lmao
@The Saint Y r so wrong
He is a child
The Saint of course he know. That’s basic music theory.
@@muhammadirsyazman8389 Actually He doesn't. Nobody in Metallica ever did except Cliff Burton. Which is a weird I admit, but this is raw truth about these guys.
@@elbagrau
Wrong! Research Kirk's music history thoroughly please! 🤘😈🤘
You know you're screwed when even the bass player gets it and the drummer starts to mock you.
What's even worse is that the bass player is actually mainly a producer, and the drummer is Lars.
@@mdnblues lars Ulrich? The average drum player who's the reason why metallica is the "greatest metal band"?
@@godloveszaza I think he mentioned Lars in a condescending manner too
Remember. These riffs are being written. The reason it’s easy to learn is because you know how it’s meant to sound. The riff is like 5 minutes old at this point. It’s not like Kirk can listen to the recording to get the feel for it.
Not to mention the rhythm on the studio version loses the fudity-dudity feel. Kirk is human like the rest of us.
True, add to that the fact that a camera is rolling too, easier said than done!
IT'S A JOOOKKEE
We can hear James play it "correctly" though.
@MetConcerts100: If the tables were turned, there's NO way James is able to play ANY of Kirk's solos...not even if Kirk took the time to walk him through it!
Lars has no right to be annoyed at Kirk for having difficulties learning a new song.
He wasnt
Louder
Lars is a tool.
when did he look annoyed? I think he was enjoying it.
@@thedarksideofthemoon9195 yeah exactly like he would die to see him practice that riff for another single hour I feel
I don't feel so bad when I have trouble learning certain songs now
bob dylan me neither man. This inspires me to keep going, Ha!
I mean you shouldn't feel bad man it's not like you can pick up the guitar and play nothing else matters without alot of practise I'm trying to learn nothing else matters right now and I'm doing pretty well but I did get stuck on some parts and after a day I got it and i keep doing better so dont give up man and keep doing what you are doing.(Note that I'm 15 lmao) have a nice day.
Well try and learn that riff. It's harder than you think lol
@Nemesis 86 shut the f up not everyone picks things as quickly
@@dales616 Yeah I'll second that. Because there aren't many notes people think it's an easy one but the rythmic signature and the "notes in between" can fuck with you.
This is awfully comforting and reassuring to see (as a guitarist and bassist myself) - To know that even the best of the best sometimes struggle when trying to grasp something new, or have their "off" days.
We're all only Human after all! \m/
I wouldn't say best of the best but he does kick some serious ass
Well don’t forget that Kirk isn’t a rhythm guitarist. This isn’t what he’s used to
@@shiramizrachi5838 I mean he plays the rhythm section just as James but also the solo so he should be pretty much used to it. Nonetheless we all sometimes make mistakes and that's perfectly fine
@@psinaa- well typically when recording in the studio he only does solos.
best of the best? he's not even in the top 20 for metal... you have a very skewed view of skill
I feel for Kirk. Learning riffs like that drive me absolutely nuts. It's one thing to know the notes being played, it's another thing when you're having to pick it correctly and in time
Somewhere dave mustaine is laughing
ya, I bet he does, he got kicked of the greates band of metal for him. He is probably laughing, ya
Domcio Online You do look high
Of course, right. And in order to be good, you have to do metal, right?.....besides Kiss, I doubt there could be another american band which lasted 40 years non stop of fame. And even Kiss suffered multiple members changes. If Cliff Burton didn't died, the band will probably still have its original formation.
And if Mustain would not have been kicked out, probably they all will be dead by now. The reason he got kicked out was because he almost killed all the band while driving totally drunk and crashing the van on the road.
You guys done yet?
EZPZ
Kirk:Is that right?
James: no
:D :D :D
That face at 1:03. I can so relate. My face literally every time I have to sit through guitar players learning their parts during rehearsals. 😂
That is the face of absolute fucking boredom 😂
Soooo vocalist or drummer? Lmao
@@becciwiththegoodhair5687 that's a drummer face 100%, I have the same one :D
Everyone that's played any sort of instrument has had moments like this
bingbing BONG!
No we havent
@@My_Lacrimosa lmao so you never made mistake and struggled playing chords when you first started??
1:19 "Hi my name is James and I will be your teacher"
That would be the best teacher in the fucking world
this really made me laugh, thank you!
Actually he wearing glasses really looks like my english teacher.
Since when did the youtube comment section suddenly turn into the most “professional guitar players on earth”? ..
Yes or like kids laughing at something they can't even do
I don't know but I do know what it's like to go through this kinda thing I am no great guitar player by any means but this was painful to watch because it's so easy for you to look and be like "oh yeah I can totally do this I know I can" but then your hands are like "oh I get it you want me to do the James brown here right?" and before you know it your fingers are MC Hammering all over the damn place wrong strings, wrong frets so you slow it down and you find cooperation so you practice a bit and you're thinking to yourself okay half speed is nailed let's take this back up no but nope your fingers still won't have any of it but the relief you feel when you rejoice in the moment your fingers and hands snap right into position and play it correctly because you've developed the muscle memory is a great feeling
Yeah, I would like to see all this "pros" grammys, platinum records and masterwork music.
@@DarkEtherealRhythm Thing is though this riff is super simple and any intermediate player could easily pick this riff up in a matter of minutes. So everything you mentioned is irrelevant really.
@@misterniceshoes2888 I’ve played professionally and though I would agree it isn’t a hard riff, the in between notes is what he said were getting him which is understandable due to them changing pattern a little but yes I would agree. No I’m no Van Halen nor claim to be
Come on, guys. We've all been there!
Really, shit talking just to make themselves feel better
I love this, he can match James on songs like dyers eve and battery but this he struggles with. I suppose it is quite a silly riff with odd changes that throw off guitarists who are trying to play it for the first time, pretty hilarious but this is just a good representation of human error.
I recently listened to BMTH's There is a Hell and it's so fucking
So much different changes, really impossible to keep up even after a second listen-through
after a while that pingy snarless snare becomes addictive to hear
I know right
+Kevin Carey Addictive like blowing your face all over your desktop
Imagine if Lars kept that double bass drum line for the song? It would have made it UNPLAYABLE.
ProtoDrumanoid Why should it be...?
One thing is for sure. It would have been the most annoying song ever played.
go listen to john bonham do triplets on the bass drum with one foot on good times bad times
I have and I'm sure Lars could do that lol Lets see Bonham play Blackened.
john bonham could play anything on a bass drum. of he could do triplets with one foot, im pretty sure he could do blackened. im a big metallica fan but i have to be honest here, everything bonham did on the drums is more complicated then anything lars has done...
Riff at 1:42... and Kirk goes..."Holy Shit!!..." I rolled on floor laughing there..:-P :))
I was literally goin through the comments to see who else caught this 😂😂😂😂
I loved that too, how many others said it too!? HOLY shit...
Same
LEL
and lars actually luaghed on that !! hahaha
Legends says that if lead guitarist won't do any solo for some years that makes him can't play this notes in between
Its funny how people judge metallica on 2 minutes of practice video, "Hey kirk sucks he cant play anything.....he needs wah wah" ummmm yea honestly if your all so amazing why you commenting on UA-cam, not touring the world? Its funny how people who don't even know kirk and will never meet him can be so jealous, funny and pathetic
bingbing BONG!
Welcome to the internet man!!
Its ok bro. He will be ok.
Add these 2 minutes to the countless hours of Kirk's and Lars' amateurish playing. Fails after fails. They got lucky to be attached to the Metallica name in the 80's. Now Metallica got stuck with them for decades now. "Metallica isn't Metallica without them"... Yeah no shit, but Metallica would be a better band with better musicians
@pedro santos did my last comment offend you lol the truth hurts!
Holy Shit was the best part xD
For anyone who has been in a band and has written original music - *this is not uncommon.* If you do not have a groove or anything to work off, remember that the riff is only in the mind of the writer. So, the timing could be the confusing issue and if you overthink it, you will cause yourself to fuck it up. It can even happen with simple 4 chord songs with a simple embellishment for the accent. I don't know how many times I have said "Wait, so it does that 1 time or 2 times? Ohhh, the second times is different, and the third time it is the same." Or something like that.
Totally agree. I used to play rhythm guitar in a band where the lead guitarist was insanely talented, one of a kind shredder and yet he could not record a simple clean arpeggio using a D chord with the sus4 pinky note. The timing was tricky. We (the band) actually had to step out of the room so he could lay down the part
1:44 when he says “Holy shit!” After those few simple notes.... dam I can’t stop laughing
James is just better riffer than Kirk. Hetfield is really one of the great rhythm players ever. Kirk must have a little off that day.
James now does about half of ALL lead guitar stuff in Metallica songs on albums and live!!!!!
Everyone knows kirk socks at guitar
Goji84 It's just a case of it's so simple yet so hard.
maybe because james literally writes 90% of all their songs
VIGO Recording Studio u re right that's the reason rolling stones has regd him as the 9 the best guitarists
Nobody can blame at Kirk for had a hard time doubling James... there was´t any "ultimate guitar" in that time
lucky dominguez It existed before the movie came out. I use to get most of my tabs from it.
Virgil G yeah but this guys came from a era witouth tabs, that´s why they was such "gods" back in the day
lucky dominguez I'm sure guitar tabs have been around for a long time. Sometimes I need them play things more accurately if I can't figure out certain notes. Sometimes I learn by ear.
lucky dominguez Guitar Tablature has actually been around longer than 5-lined staff scoring, believe it or not.
Yes. Yes, we can.
Kirk's "holy shit!" gets me coming back to this video every once in awhile. Hilarious.
0:49 the part you came here for
nah its 0:50
😡
The best annotations I've seen, i'm dying
I just love it because we get to see a really great guitarist who is after all, human.
And how long it takes someone who's great at something to learn something new
so in the end it sounds like they simplified the riff so he could play it lol
+nickDOTbloc No. Thats only in a especific part in the song.
EZPZ
No
No
Kirk can't play triplets on rhythm guitar for shit lol. Many metalcore, and progressive metal bands do triplets all the time. Kirk is old school so I get this type of playing doesn't come easy to him
Lars is annoyed yet he can't keep a beat himself. Lol
that´s why the riff got less chugging and less bassdrum
I love it, it shows their flaws. And we all know, whoever here is a musician knows best how tough it can be when you're learning a new song.
It's not fair to teach him without a WahWah ;-)
yeah hahahahaha
That moment, when LARS makes fun of You... 😔
That snare drum sounds like a garbage can
A fucking awesome trash can sent directly from god
Hayden Hensley Yeah, a god that doesn't know how to tune a fucking snare drum.
+axsylum17 its a snareless sanre. It wasn't tuned different Lars took the snare chains off the bottom so it wouldn't crack, without the chains it goes PING! PING!
Lance Rogoschensky good one bro!!!
and its dope \m/
Nice to see that EVEN the best ones get stuck once in a while! LOL Kudos to Kirk, I think he's one of the coolest guitar players ever! Always so cool on any comments he's done on air that shows how humble he really is!
Sometimes its so simple but, you think too hard what makes it difficult.
When you got how to perfectly perform that riff it feels like heaven tho.
"He (Kirk) makes good use of the talent that he has." - Dave Mustaine
Actually love the snare sound! still prefer the snappier sounding snare but this snare sound is fucking dirty and raw, love it.
And thus the ultimate metallica meme was born
1:44 LMAO the way Kirk says “holy shit” like he just approached a Slayer solo or something
The music that they played in the 80s rocks, but the music that they have written since rocks as well. They are held to such a high standard that was set by themselves. If any other band were to produce even one album that Metallica has, they would be huge.
Everyone needs to shut up. Every guitarist has had that day where you can't play shit right and you're just like AHHH. Kirk Hammett is one of the best guitarists of all time and he's given us amazing riffs and solos. He couldn't play one riff and they decided to record it, big deal. You guys don't comment this shit when he's rocking the one solo live.
Most over rated Metal guitarist ever! I mean... who has ever heard of a Metal guitarist who can't play triplets? Me.. and his name is Kirk.
scott henderson you are so stupid... have you ever tried to play the guitar?
you are so fuckin right
Every guitarist goes through these days but Kirk isn't even close to being one of the greatest
Clara Anindya Stop being a fan boy
My garbage can gives same tone with this snare drum.
Any “true” guitar player has had moments like this. It’s all apart of playing the instrument.
It's all part of learning anything for the first time
i love videos like this because it shows that these guys are still just like the rest of us, fans of great music still just jamming in a garage trying to make it happen, even though theyre in a studio and they already made it happen haha
I admit he says "YEAH!!!" alot haha but he can sing well too, He has good tone, stays on pitch, has good control, and alot of power...he is a great vocalist
If you've played guitar, you've been there. It's the worst when it happens in rehearsal though, because everyone's watching.
james plays the riff
1:14 Kirk plays mission impossible theme. Hahahaha
0:54 James's saying: We should call Dave Mustaine
So what do you get when you take Kirk Hammett and subtract finger tapping, a wah-wah pedal, and the pentatonic scale?
Lars.
Harmonic menor scale
I think in the end, Hammet still didnt get it. They had to remove the "notes in between".
It's the unnecessary notes that are fucking with him.
The captions are hilarious!
The way James is just standing there looking at Kirk at 0:53 always makes me crack up
🧍♂️
Mom I frew up
I’ve been playing for 10 years and I recently had a moment like this learning bridge on the Foo Fighter’s “Learn to Fly”. It happens
U can even see Kirk go a bit red he’s always had that inner child. I hate how Lars is looking at him that’s his bro. He obviously just had never played something like that. I love James so much but Kirk is overrall a better player. Then again who could imagine to sing and play riffs like James. Hell I don’t think James has not played a riff to perfection live. There all amazing I just wish it wasn’t always just James supporting Kirk it’s like Lars gets jealous just let them chill and jam and learn the riff together. All starring at him like he’s gotta do it right there and now.
When I first saw this, I was actually impressed that I managed to learn something within minutes that Kirk couldn't seem to grasp.
Granted, anything he plays solo wise is well beyond me, but for that moment, I was happy as a rhythm guitarist.
Probably, maybe he just was asked to play that on the spot and never had a chance to practice beforehand, which caught him offguard. Kirk played some of the most memorable lead guitar in metal music, and I will always respect him for that. He(alongside the other guys) made Metallica what it is.
The note that is accented changes with every repeating of the lick, so you can see why it’s fucking with Kirk.
I have been playing hair guitar for a very long time and I do this exact same thing, and it's always on some simple repetitive thing. I play it right and then I fk it up and that goes back and forth until I just have to stop and be finished. After a few hours, I can come back to it and it falls into place. So glad to see that even the most experienced players do it, too.
It’s sad but true Kirk is still unforgiven about this 😔
Death is creeping on him.
I see what you did there lmfao
Lars at 1:03
*I sure miss Dave*😁
Said no bandmate ever
"It's the notes in between that are fucking with me! >:(" lol. Kirk is awesome.
Legend has it this was once a riff recorded on Kirk’s phone, but when he lost his phone, he forgot everything.
This clip makes me feel like maybe I actually WILL be able to play guitar like Kirk one day.
yes, you will, keep going \m/
No me canso de ver la cara de Lars de "No puede ser"
hahaha, I've seen this like once a year since it came out. Never gets old
0:38 when daddy takes wah wah away
I don't see how learning a riff he hasn't played before is so wrong?
its the internet everyone here perfectly picks up a song after 10 minutes of practice.. if you cant you should just quit.
I always thought that Metallica handled themselves professionally, writing the music and reading the corresponding sheet music, but I see that they handle themselves like me with my rock group in adolescence ..
Yep. Neither James nor Kirk know how to read music.
legend has it that Kirk is still practicing.
Brilliantly choreographed!
I’ve been in a band before it’s hard when someone writes a riff and wants you to master it so you can play the song in 5 minutes.
Nice to see someone who can shred like Kirk Hammett still gets noteblind at times.
I struggled too for a minute, somehow didn't realize that those are simply triplets.
I wish they kept the 16th note triplet double bass on the drums in the final song, it would be a little muddy (not saying that St. Anger isn't muddy already), but it sounds *really* cool.
kirks just trolling to delay the album and hope they change their minds
Lars looking at kirk like "how hard can it be?"... Kirk thinking "shut up lars, you play the same loop on the entire album" 🤣
hahahah
that snare at the end sound awesome !
Happens to me too... I hear rhythms differently instantly want to improvise
1:02 me at 3am
I was never a fan of Metallica, but I'll at least say this for them. You can't confuse them with any other band.
I'm learning how to play. And it's notes in between that are really fucking with me. I'm not kidding.
So nice of James Hetfield to let a fan visit him in the studio for a day!
every guitarist encounters such a moment
metallica has got enough balls to admit it
1:03 lars face
Lars was like "Meh." 😂
"Yeah, I got THAT... It's the notes in between that are fucking with me."
This literally is what they call practice&learn process in music.
what i like about this is it exemplifies everything there is about being a guitarist. every guitarist knows this feeling and even who you would consider to be geniuses are rly just like anyone else. james feels like the supportive dad in the situation, haha, but this is very relatable and i love to see this idk why.
I've been in several bands and every new song will start like this regardless of the ability of the instrumentalists
Why is Bob Rock holding a guitar? There is literally no reason for him to be anywhere near a guitar.
he played bass on st. anger
I'm sorry to hear that.
Steve McCord Not as much as I am when I listen the album :D
Steve McCord What an awesome answer bro!
because bob play guitar in the album, not hammet, hammet din^t play guitar well
When he says “HOLY SHIT!” Has me dieing mab
I love that James picks the wrong number of muted notes when he slows it down.
