That whole image change of theirs was diametrically opposed to what any metal fan of the time was doing in their personal lives, absolutely alienated the core fans even more than the music of the black album, and just completely made them look like sell-outs.
This is from the time period where Lars, Kirk, and James got cocky and got lazy with their skills. Jason at this time looked like an amazing musician though.
Made two great records and it was also very good live era for them. Lars was creating fantastic drum things while still being able to play all the old songs perfectly.

It captivated me. It was versitile and alternative. It attracted people with numerous tastes and styles. That's why it sold so well. Metallica, no matter the road they take, will remain my favorite.

They could all go with this guitar pro hack actually. Robert always crawls around like he has to pee badly, he'd probably love it too. James has the guitar so low he won't even need a tube. Lars has it the best, he could go for weeks before having to empty the containers if he uses his drum kit for that purpose. I don't how it would affect the sound of the drums, but can't be possibly worse than St. Anger.
