- Beginning Boogie Woogie Licks with Flint Long is the starting point for you to get your hands working together. Blues piano players, gospel players, r and b players, as well as rock and roll and country players have used these licks for years. They are standard in the boogie woogie repertoire, but they are not that difficult to master. Flint Long explains turnarounds, pick-ups, scrape-offs, and other techniques in this video and other videos Flint has created for the beginning piano student. It is important to practice a little each day, until these techniques become easy for you. And they will! Also, use these licks your own way! Change them if you like. They are to be used as building blocks as you develop your own right hand boogie woogie style! And you will! Love to all Boogie Woogie Piano Players!

As a 71 year old with arthritic fingers and not played piano until a few years ago, I'm trying hard to get the boogie woogie rhythm. Hard to get it right but your teaching is brilliant to inspire to keep going!
Hey there Keith! I just happened to be on the computer just now and saw your kind comment! Getting the boogie woogie rhythm IS hard sometimes. But I have faith in you! You'll get it! And pretty soon it will become second nature. All of us players have had to go through the stage that you are now going through! One tip - It''s better to practice a little, ( even five minutes) every day than it is to lay off for four or five days and then practice an hour and a half on Sunday, if you know what I mean. The brain needs to be reminded daily, what you're telling the fingers to do. I'm thrilled that you find my tutorials helpful! It's a boogie woogie world, baby!
Me too... I'm 71 and some stiff fingers, only played a year as a kid 9 year old... didn't learn my notes ... an havn't played since... got the wife a Donner 88 key piano and I'm going to play some now...

Thanks, Kelly. Turn arounds are cool, aren't they! If you like these scrapes you might consider my video "101 of the Best Blues and Boogie Woogie Licks." It's thirty bucks at FlintLong.com. It's me demonstrating all 101 of 'em. Also, when doing scrapes remember - most people scrape ''up" from Eb to E natural or from Gb to G natural for example. But you can also scrape "down" from say, Gb to F while hitting the C note above with your little finger. Then it sounds so bluesy and great! And you can do that particular scrape on a C chord, F chord or G7!

I forget to mention that I am 65 years old and I begun to practice piano recently. At this age is not easy, but is good for maintain the brain clever
Thanks for writing! I practice two hours per day. but I used to sometimes practice more. And then when I was gigging, in addition to the practice I would be playing in a club or something at night. Here's my strong advice If you can practice an hour on some days, that's great. But even if you can only practice for 5 or 10 minutes, do it everyday. You'll make faster progress than if you skip days and then play an hour.
Sorry for the delay. After a week of digging the content, I subbed. Your teaching style is great. Your patience is amazing, 63 y/o and took up the piano about a year ago. Slow, but noticeable improvement. Boogie woogie blows me away. I, also, need to be patient. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

Hey Miguel! Please forgive me for not replying one year ago. I apologize! Thank you for writing. I pratice at least 2 hours every day of the world, but when I was younger I would practice up to 6-8 hours per day. But I have students who are really good who can go from beginner to advanced in one year by simply practicing one hour per day. And Miguel, this is important - it is better to play a little bit each day, even if only for five minutes, than it is to not practice for four days and then practice for 3 hours on Sunday for example. Don't do that, your hand and mind connection will be better it your play at least a little each and every day. You will make faster progress if you play a little each day. I can play left and right hands separately but, not together. Is it best to get the left hand steady first?
Yes, your instincts tell you right. It is better to get the left hand steady and solid and confident first. Are you right handed? I'm right handed, so I can't speak for left handed people, but I mostly keep my eye on my left hand while playing. It helps me keep the left hand going even and smooth. You want all your left hand patterns to become second nature, and they will! And remember Stephen, as you go forward, it's better to practice a little every day, even for five minutes, than it is to lay off for three or four days and then practice for two hours on Sunday, if you know what I mean! Daily practice sessions, even little ones, will get you there faster!

The right hand does not always need to fall on the 1a 3a. You can put the right hand down whereever it sounds good to you. If you like the way I'm showing it, then slow it down until you can do it that way. Sometimes you have to slow it way, way down and repeat a hundred times! You'll get it! I had to learn it the hard way too!
