- Did you know the Reliant in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was originally designed in reversed orientation?
The nacelles were above the dish and there were two torpedo launch pods below the dish.
I wanted to see how this original design would have looked on screen. So I edited the following together. Enjoy!

Yeah glad they reversed it as in this orientation the Reliant looks silly as opposed to intimidating.
Placing the nacelles at the bottom was the correct choice
You should have khan and crew upside down as well 😂
Haha
🤣🤣😂😂😆😆😀😀
They aren't Australian
Should have renamed the Reliant as the U.S.S. Poseidon
it gives an idea, but the saucer and nacelles would be flipped back over, with pods where the phasers are on the sides. overall tho, the nacelles on the bottom looks WAY better. the other brass loved it also, cause you could clearly see which ship was which, one had them on top, one had them on bottom.
Maybe... but this way looks pretty cool too.
The Reliant looks more menacing in its original right side up configuration. This was well done!
Prefer the original but this is amazing work.
I heard that the Reliant was at first before this was a older Constitution class with a little difference in the script . But the producers felt the audience would not be able to tell the difference between the two ships in battle you had to see which ship you were looking at so they changed the Reliant to Miranda class .
they Also gave Reliant RED Running lights , while the Enterprise had White/Blue lighting.
@@markplott4820 they did that so you can tell it was no longer a friendly ship anymore .
I read somewhere that the constitution refit model was a pain in the arse to set up, move, etc, whereas the Miranda class model was a lot lighter and easier. I expect the special effects crew was relieved.
Watch “Wolf 359 and Beyond: A Preview” by JTVFX, it has the original (Constitution class) Reliant’s encounter with the Enterprise
@@doqas Just seen it .
The original orientation of the Enterprise was with the nacelles and secondary hull "underneath" the saucer section and bridge located in front of the main deflector. This made more sense since the model with mounting bar on the secondary hull (side opposite the camera) would be bottom-heavy and thus more stable for filming. Roddenberry liked the inverted version as did the NBC executives so that was that.
Both look fine. Obviously being similar we prefer the version we are used to. That said, I actually lik ethe way the used version differs from \enterprise. It differentiates the two opponents. Awesome film. And well done to CaptRobau for making this edited version. Lays the matter to bed for me.
Although the nacelles are upside down compared to how they would be in the reverse orientation. So with that change, the design would be much improved. Same with the bridge and other saucer section components.
I think the design was very nice and cool and very effective in the clip. I have the model and I was also thinking of placing the nacelles on the top as well. Nice work.
Reliant look way more aggressive, i like it.
Thanks!
@@CaptRobau : I like it too. Though Reliant isn't supposed to be... with Kahn at the controls, there is a pretty sinister look to it here. Very nice job on this. Thanks for doing it.
I love it. I had hear this story, too. Thanks for giving us a glimps of what might have been. Does anyone know if there's a kitbash of this online somewhere?
Excellent! Love your work! Remako is amazing!
Thank you!

Now that would be impossible for the Reliant to fire her phasers from that position at the Enterprise' secondary hull where they were aiming for the engine room from it's position the phaser fire would most likely have hit the cargo bay area or the arboretum it would have been impossible for it to hit the engine room of the Enterprise if she was filmed upside down like this and the same with the photon torpedoes that was fired at the Enterprise hitting her on the underside of the saucer section that torpedo would have taken out the Reliant's bridge as the torpedo launchers were right behind the Reliant's bridge so technically Khan would have done a lot of serious damage to the Reliant in his twisted need for revenge.
While I still prefer the Miranda's design, I must give the original design credit for intimidation. The original just looks scarier.
I actually prefer this version. It looks way more Starfleet like.
I think most ppl. prefer the official one, because they are just used to see it.
Having the engines mounted low certainly helps with making the two ships more distinguishable.
Mounted high, I think they might be difficult to tell apart from certain angles.
Great video!
definitely more aggressive this way; looks more like a harmless scientific vessel the way they did it nacelles-down. So I guess I'm glad to see this, but happy they chose the way they did
Just as exciting as ever. the music just kills me, especially when they pass each other within just 10's of metres.
The nacelles down version is much better. Glad they went with it.
Sir you did it!
CaptRobau - Good Job. Excellent work.
So the Rollbar and Warp Necelle placement is right, but the Megaphasers should have been Relocated to the Dorsal Saucer.
and the Saucer Section flipped and the Bridge located ontop of the Saucer.
Otherwise Great Job.
Thanks. This is just a mirroring of part of the image. In the future it's be cool if someone could sub out the Reliant and add in an new custom model.
think in vonda mcintyre's novelization of the movie--reliant was actually in this configuration from the way it was described,

And the same with the Enterprise if the Reliant was built to be shown upside down like this the Enterprise's phaser fire would be hitting the underside of the Reliant or it would have worked if Bennett wasn't looking at the drawings for the ship upside down.
Have you heard the Reliant theme music that Horner composed but never recorded? Would love to see your Reliant footage with that music playing in the background.

2:23 Kirk's wondering why the Reliant is approaching them upside-down... not that there's an up or down in space.
Interesting thing is, the same thing happened to the original 1960's _Enterprise._ Her original design had the secondary hull on top, with the narcells and the primary hull at the bottom.
At certain angles it kind of looks like a Romulan Bird of Prey
I'm used to the USS Reliant the way they built it for the movie, but thanks for finding this out and taking the time to show what it would have been like the other way.
The film clearly would have had the same drama both ways, but I think that the original upside-down design does make it easier to spot Reliant.
Did you have any thoughts about what the Mutara Nebula damage would have looked like?
The movie had Spock talking about "two dimensional thinking, but there seems to have been a basic assumption that blowing up the top of the ship does more damage.
Glad you liked it. I don't know what the Mutara Nebula damage would've looked like. The specifics of that scene were probably planned way later than the design itself. I imagine that was step 1.
Given that exposed bridge hitting the top is deadlier
Nice, but I feel the nacelles look upside down on this rendering.
I prefer the original but this is good work.
Excellent. I prefer the design that was used.
I prefer the look of that we got in the movie. It doesnt look bad the other way but i think looks best the correct way.
It's cool. I like it.
Should have done a CGI model of the Reliant
Reliant's alternative design looks more aggresive than the one selected and shown in the movie as a scientific starship . Watching Reliant attacking the Enterprise passes the message not to underestimate the enemy by its size
The original designer was like: " No no no no NO NO NO NOOOOO ! They fucked up my ship ! The bastards read the blueprints upside down." For some reason I hear this in Walter Matthau's voice.
well done,🎉
Good work! Thanks! I am glad they screwed it up and did it upside down,. Maybe they should have done Spock's ears upside down too!
I think I like the other way cause it looks more balacned. And here is something people forget, while in space you don't to worry about aruodynamics these ships do occationally land, and they do have battles in the atmosphere at these times aurodynsmics come in to play heavily.
It looks ridiculous upside down.
That design would make an excellent design if cbs decided to make a show in that era and needed kitbashes
The inverted Reliant reminds me of a TOS Romulan warbird.
The nacelles need to be flipped upside down to look.right.
Correct. This way it's still not 100% correct.
Somehow it looks smaller in the originally intended orientation.
I see no alternate design. Just flipped over and reversed film clips.
The original from the movie is best.
It does certainly look like a weaker Constitution class when inverted and I believe that's what they're going for. But that exactly why I don't like it, the ship looks more balanced and combat capable with the nacelles down and the torpedo launcher overlooking the ship.
I think reliant looks way better the way they did it in the movie. This way makes it look stupid. So much more bad ass with it inverted from the origional design they sketched. It was stroke of luck they gave him the design upsidown like that.
Looks better the way it ended up. The original concept is too similar to the Enterprise.
This is a poor indication. This merely flips the existing design upside down. The original had the nacelles sweeping back in swan like Federation fashion, no roll bar, and twin weapons pods. Along with the Phase II Enterprise, the Reliant concept is another example of a concept I like better than what was used.
Good thing it was changed because it represents the Enterprise Upside down 🤷♂️
It’s upside down
The alternate looks very graceful. Far less blocky than the Miranda class we got.
That looks WAY BETTER. More aggressive, more Starfleetish. I like it a lot!
Still Like the original
I like it this way better but the roll bar has to go.
Not sure what the big deal is, there's no up or down in space anyway. Spock even criticizes Khan's "two-dimensional thinking".
So ein Unsinn!
I don't like it 👎
Star Trek ships are so 2 dimensional. Space is is 3 dimensional
