3:34 - I've watched "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" so many times and never understood what Spock meant when he said "(Khan's) pattern indicates two dimensional thinking" and what Kirk meant by "Z-minus 10,000 meters." I never thought Spock meant that Khan tended to attack at the same plane every time or that Kirk thought about descending to allow Reliant to pass over Enterprise. Thanks for the explanation!
2 D thinking, he thought like he was sailing a ship with left, right, slow or full speed. I always thought that Kirk doing the z minus 10k was also very 2D. like a sub driver dipping and waiting for a ship to pass over. There are so many more movements available in 3D that could have also cleared their flanks. After all, they weren't sure he was behind them, only suspected it.
Spock: Sporatic energy readings... portside aft. Could be an impulse turn. He’s intelligent, but not experienced. His pattern indicates 2 dimensional thinking. Kirk: Full stop. Z-10,000 meters... stand by on photon torpedoes.
Because Spock made a (quite accurate) guess as to Reliant's movements, I assumed Khan was doing the same with the Enterprise's movements. When the Enterprise stopped and moved "downward" along it's relative Z-axis, Khan might have (incorrectly) deduced about where they should be on a 2D plane (much like a map), but didn't take into account the Z-axis. I also assumed Spock would have been able to tell when the Reliant passed "above" them by continuing his sensor reading, then Kirk "rose" the Enterprise directly behind, timing its "ascent" perfectly with what Spock would give with the sporadic sensors. There are a lot of assumptions, but I only extrapolate based on what I saw over and over the many times I've seen this movie.
I commented on that before I read this. I was thrilled to see this because I couldn't figure out how they ended up right behind the Reliant. This animation explains all of that in great detail. I'm going to view again soon and listen for the "Z-minus" line more closely. It appears to be so subtle in the film that those paying attention to other things (like me) might not pick up on it. It only took me 7 years to find it. Thank you!

This is just fantastic. I particularly love the "rainbow" warp speed effect inspired by the posters. And for some reason it never occurred to me that what we were seeing in the movie was that the genesis wave was so powerful it totally dispersed the Mutara Nebula. Really excellent use of visuals.

This does a great job of showing the nature of Star Trek combat. It’s not about firepower or sheer number of ships, but about wits and intelligence. Strategy over strength. It’s a game of chess, with much higher stakes of course.
Problem is, large scale wars like this such as the dominion war, would never work that way. Taking the Klingon war also isnt a good example, since its more of a cold war than a full scale conflict.
Yeah you're right, and I seriously thought about adding it. There's a lot missing though, so it was definitely an exercise of what to keep/what to leave out.

Space battles in sci-fi have always been a bit over intensive on the effects. Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, all of these had 'lots' of lights flying around and that can often draw attention away from the drama, which the LAST thing the writers want. In my opinion, this is STILL the best Star Trek movie because they didn't NEED lots of phasers and photons going off to make it suspenseful. When Kirk ignored regs and let Khan get a cheap shot in, it almost physically hurt me to watch. He screwed up and it cost a lot. It cost Scotty his kinsman! And then... When Kirk gave the order 'Z minus 2000, stand by photon torpedoes;' he didn't 'know' what Khan would do. Awesome job! I can't believe you even thought to do this, but I'm glad you did. My nitpick: I wich Ricardo Montalbán's name was included. He contributed so much to Star Trek through his great performances in TOS and (obviously) this film.
A wonderful tribute to Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelly and James Doohan, this movie was very emotional, everyone felt the loss of spock as badly as kirk did, basically the same as losing a brother. It will also be a loss for us when Shatner finally goes to the big starship in the sky, but he will be with his brothers once again. No kind of love like this exists outside the Star Trek universe, all the fans come together through love. Great job with the music and voice samples, very evoking.
It would have taken no effort for Kirk to raise shields. In fact, Yellow alert automatically raises shields in TNG. Everytime I watch STWOK I hope he will raise shields before the attack. LOL
I laughed at that, I do the same thing sometimes! What gets me though is that photon torpedos are a very powerful weapon. Without shields (both TWOK and both ships in TSFS) the ships should be annihilated shouldn't they?
@@ansoncall6497 Star Trek The Motion Picture and 2 The Wrath Of Kahn are my favorite movies. The scene when you see The Enterprise for the first time I get chills down my spine.
This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Its perfection is only exceeded by the actual film itself, which is going on as soon as I have watched this again (I am 41 so while I was too young to see the film in the cinema I have been, and always will be, obsessed with it since I was 5 years old, the film at that stage being 2).
@@ansoncall6497 its awsome. I have to admit, I have always been more of Star Wars fan than Star Trek, coming to Trek not through TOS (which came out when I was minus 10) but through the 80's films and of course, TNG. I had my first cinematic Trek experience over the Christmas period of 1986 with TVH and have caught every subsequent release in theatres since, up to and including Justin Lin's STBeyond. As wonderful as most (if not all) of those movies were I still watch STIITWOK at least once every 6 months, considering it to be up there with The Empire Strikes Back, Ghostbusters, Back To The Future, Raiders and (as a more personal favourite) Joe Dante's InnerSpace.

Star Trek 2 Is THEE BEST Star Trek Movie EVER!!!!!!!
Very very beautifull job ! So 80s ! Like it very much ! 👍👍
Awesome job! I can't believe you even thought to do this, but I'm glad you did. My nitpick: I wich Ricardo Montalbán's name was included. He contributed so much to Star Trek through his great performances in TOS and (obviously) this film.
I agree. I should have included his name.

It's not to late, is it?
@@JGG1701 UA-cam doesn't have a way of swapping videos for a corrected one.
This is one of the best ones I've seen.
Truly fantastic. You somehow managed to capture so much of what made that film great in such a short piece. Loved it!
Incredible Anson Call. Your attention to detail was impeccable. Soo cool getting an overhead perspective like that. Thank you
A wonderful tribute to Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelly and James Doohan, this movie was very emotional, everyone felt the loss of spock as badly as kirk did, basically the same as losing a brother.
It will also be a loss for us when Shatner finally goes to the big starship in the sky, but he will be with his brothers once again.
No kind of love like this exists outside the Star Trek universe, all the fans come together through love.
Great job with the music and voice samples, very evoking.
I just watched this again on my 55" big screen and OMG!
So much greatness in this video!🖖🤯
super glad it looks good!
@@ansoncall6497
Definitely agree.
That was cool. I have often tracked the ship courses in my mind just like this!!
Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human.
This needs to go viral.
I'm tryin' :D
Already shared on Facebook by me. Come on guys share and share alike...
Gotta come back to this in 2024...

Cadet: Sir! The mains are back online.
Kirk: Bless you Scotty...Go, Sulu!
Well.. as they say, regulations are written in blood. Shields being raised on yellow alert could be as a result of this very event.
@@Penryn87 yep I was thinking the same.
By the same token, why wouldn't Kirk just finish off Reliant instead of trying to run away, surely destroying the genesis device would stop it?
@@jontiummorkimus7111 hard to say since Genesis was so unstable due to the use of protomatter in its matrix.
well done , I watched this years ago and just again today ...good stuff !
This is just the coolest thing - please post and do more. I would be happy to see more via Patreon
Why do I keep coming back to this video?
So very good! I come back to this video every couple of months ❤
Glad you like it!
3:53 the iconic music comes through as the Enterprise rises up, this is a real nice touch
I just discovered this after almost a year of it being on UA-cam.
I am both embarrassed and extremely excited.
Illogical.
lol. It's okay.
Absolutely stunning piece of visual and audible art - I am blown away with your creation!
Thank you adiblasi! That is very kind of you to say!
Very cool. Wondered how the battle in the nebula really looked.
Thank you for a great video. Please make more of these type of video.
I'm glad you liked it Jennifer Beyer.
@@ansoncall6497 Star Trek The Motion Picture and 2 The Wrath Of Kahn are my favorite movies. The scene when you see The Enterprise for the first time I get chills down my spine.
This is insanely great. If the afterlife is just this kind of treatment of all of my favorite things, I'd be fine with that!
Me too!
Seriously, amazing work. I've watched this a dozen times already today. Thanks for making it.
Wow .
Reminded me of playing on my C64 in the 80's .
Fantastic ' more give us more '
This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Its perfection is only exceeded by the actual film itself, which is going on as soon as I have watched this again (I am 41 so while I was too young to see the film in the cinema I have been, and always will be, obsessed with it since I was 5 years old, the film at that stage being 2).
I'm glad you liked it stee!
This is a brilliant piece of work. I can't even ... Well done!
Thank you!
Man, I was blown away by this! Such a great 'naval' battle in film history, and you captured the totality of it in this format. Nice work.
Thanks.
That is an amazing video!
It’s so good I can forgive the nearly 60 second intro
Beautiful video! Took me back to the vector graphic video games that I loved during that era (particularly Space War.) Terrific music (also appropriate for that era) and of course, telling one of the greatest science fiction stories ever told in under 7 minutes!
Bravo!
Thank you.
YES! I thought the same thing. I dropped a lot of quarters in the Space War arcade machine. Even bought a Vetrex game machine.
yea, and in Space War, you could even blow off little chunks of the ship and it moved slower and did not turn as well.
@@steveduerr6367 yes!! Loved that about the game.
I could watch this a hundred times and probably have.
Thank you!
My recommendations brought me here and this was absolutely beautiful. Instantly reminding me of the old vector arcade game.
I grew up in the 80's....can't shake the influence it looks like =)
Absolutely loved it! Excellent work. ST II:TWOK has a very special place in my life. I'm so happy to see how influential and popular it still is after all of these decades. 🖖

Thank you Caretaker. Mine too!
🖖🏻: “She can still Outrun us, and outGun us, but there is Mutura Nebula at 1-5-3 Mark 4”
Wow, that was hypnotic, from beginning to end. I especially like the tributes at the end.
Extremely well done sir. I assume you are employed in the creative visual arts. If not, you should be. Fantastic. Great tribute to our favourite sci-fi franchise. 👍✌👌
I am. Thank you!
From the movie the Enterprise was hiding at the bottom of the Regula planetoid, and then speed towards the Mutara nebula.
I gotta say I love the music. I always thought the soundtrack of the reliant bearing down on the Enterprise was one of the greatest in Star Trek history
Thank you, and I agree that the soundtrack is one of the best of trek.
All these years later, this still hits the spot. Good work! Happy Anniversary Star Trek!
Kirk "Engine room. Well done, Scotty!"
Bones "Jim ... I think you'd better get down here."
Lots of great voice work I couldn't grab due to the loud background music.
Anson Call Excellent work. It brought tears to my eyes
Holy gum drops! This was amazingly well done. Everything about it was top notch. Thank you for sharing this with us!
So cool. Thanks for the hard work
I do not comment on UA-cam often but, Brazo Zulu!
This was amazing! Thank you!
You're welcome!
We tried it once your way, Khan. Are you game for a rematch? Khan, I'm laughing at the superior intellect.
Completely great, I really enjoyed that, thank you.
You're welcome Jim!
good lord that was awesome.
awesome. loved the Mutara Nebula. imagine if they made a game with graphics like this - wishful thinking i guess as Star Trek doesn't get the love it deserves in video games. thank you Anson, really happy i found this video.
Even the music sounds particulate.
😂😂👍
This video should be preserved for the art that it is. Absolute pleasure to watch. Great job.
Would love to see a Star trek VI version!
This video is an amazing work of art and a brilliant tribute to my all time favorite film!!!
I am glad you like it Mark!
