He is not grumpy. He is Just Cool , Old Captain Like me. 64 Years Old and still kicking, myself. Only 26 years my Elder. Still Honor and Respect. Capt. Morgan Retired.
Bill, they're not doing impressions of you, they're doing impressions of the way you portrayed Captain James Kirk. Kirk's speech inflection and cadence was unique, to say the least. That's why you've had more impressions done by other actors and comics than any other Star Trek actor.
This plus the fact that impressions and parodies are not the same. I have known so much BS in my life, I am pretty sure he is flattering his ego by imagining he is being funny when doing this tryhard self-mocking routine while also mixing in serious critique. It's basically as funny as any fake just-kidding approach.
That's the thing, is most people, when they do a Shatner, what they're impersonating is Kevin Pollack's impression. I've long thought Belushi's take was closer to the mark than people acknowledged, because he's not doing the cliched take everyone does. Mostly because at the time of the sketch, the cliche hadn't been established.
yeah, it had been established. spent my youth on star trek, before snl existed, the cliche was there all along. one of the things that make STOG better than anything that came after.
These impressions are not meant to be accurate they are meant to be funny. They deliberately exaggerate facets of speech and acting for comic effect. That Shatner does not appreciate this is quite funny in its own right.
I always loved that Bruce Campbell Shatner impression. Funny watching Shatner himself viewing it. He looked a bit confused/not happy with it at first but by the end you can tell he sees the humor and appreciates Bruce's wit. Shatner's stylized acting/over-acting isn't for everyone, but its unique and memorable. You can pretty much do an impression of him saying anything and people will immediately recognize it. That's an amazing thing.
The thing is, if you go back and watch multiple Original Star Treks, Kirk very rarely emotes like that. It's worth noting that Shatner was trained as a stage actor, where exaggerated emotions are necessary to convey to the audience, who never gets a close up of their faces. So, in some circumstances, Kirk does have an exaggerated emotion, but I think that's mostly the character. It was intended as a foil to Spock's usually stoic delivery. I really think William Shatner did a magnificent job as Kirk. Chris Pine does a great impression, too, because he doesn't resort to caricature.
Daniel Day-Lewis was also trained as a stage actor. However, William Shatner is no Daniel Day-Lewis. I've always enjoyed his performances, but he is. let's say limited: ua-cam.com/video/DAs-HYLdfTg/v-deo.html
Most of Shatner's hammiest acting happened in Season 3, generally regarded as the weakest season of TOS. Watch an episode like "The Enterprise Incident" or "And the Children Shall Lead" or "Turnabout Intruder", Shatner's off on another planet half the time. I think he knew he was getting substandard material at that point and was just like "Screw it, I'm at least gonna try to have fun with this" 😆
There are a few times where it was obvious. One episode he is giving the star date and he seems like he forgot it halfway through before completing it . another example is in Opperation--Annihilate. Where he says " some, kind. Of creature. "
He kind of evolves into that style as the series went on. I just watched the original series again, and what surprises me is how few times Bones says, "dammit Jim, I'm a doctor"...and how little the Klingons are actually in the series. As I thought I remembered it, Bones was always saying that and the Klingons were in virtually every episode!
“Chris Pine can do no harm.” ☺️ Love that Mr. Shatner said this! Chris is a terrific Captain Kirk in his own right. But no one is William Shatner, so glad he is still around and sharp as a tack! ♥️
For modern version of Kirk, Pine was the great choice, not 100% perfect but he did very well, especially back in 2016. Kinda wish Shatner was in the movie as future Kirk cameo like Nimoy did.
Chris will always be in Shatner's good books because of how respectful he was to Shatner when he was first taking up the role. Chris wrote Shatner a letter asking for his blessings, and in midst of a bitter tussle with Paramount, Shatner really, really appreciated that. ❤
I'm really starting to love Shatner. His reputation for taking himself so seriously, for such a long time, has gone full circle , such that he's recognised that reputation and now plays on it and as a result definitely doesn't take himself too seriously...he's gone interstellar and worm holed life.
He did a great skit on SNL in the early 90's telling Star Trek fans to move out of their parents' basements and to get a life. He's always been in on it.
👍Yeah - I agree. Seems like a lot of the time he's having fun with pretending to be offended or whatever, but is actually just running with it. "Max - You're beginning to annoy me."
The Kirk character was a believable threat, in all situations. Like the character Jim West. He wasn't some muscle bound behemoth, he was a credibly build for a wrestler. The action was always gritty and realistic which helped ground the fantastical situations of the show. People tease over his cadence but fail to notice the subtle fact that the alien beings he's interacting with, don't speak English as a first language. Shatner was a true actor, and played the role of Kirk like few men could.
I'll be honest he had me in the first half. His criticism of MacFarlane seemed almost defensive but afterwards it's obvious he's hamming it up for the camera. Good one Bill!
I agree! I can't tell if the comments on this video are real or not, or if people really don't get that it's tongue-in-cheek. The line where he's like "I don't like Belushi as me but [this thin handsome guy] does it really well." haha!
William Shatner looks younger in this interview than Patrick Stewart did in the new Picard series, who is nearly ten years Shatner's junior, and yet looks about 20 or 30 years older than him. Weird!
@Stiff Limp Noodle my dryer has more abilities than Joe. That being said Joe would be an excellent president for a senior retirement community or an adult softball league commissioner

A great “tongue in cheek” analysis of these impressions of one of Hollywood’s most iconic characters. Must have been fun for him given he knows many of the actors off screen. Shatner’s a good sport and funny!
The best impression I've seen is Chris Pine in the Kobayashi Maru scene in the first Abrams movie because he's doing Shatner's inflections but doing it within a role as opposed to a jokey impression.

Is he though, seems like he is getting a little short. I give him credit for discussing the impressions.
He is a good man. He looks just like my uncle. Without the $$$$$ of course.
@@americansfirst1095 Well, let's hope for the best. Maybe someday William Shatner will have as much money as your uncle.
Shatner is a treasure. He's literally sitting there enjoying people parodying him. And playing along. There's only one.
Captain Kirk was an iconic character. William Shatner was James Bond in space.
James Bond of space?! Dear God, that's perfect, hahaha! Especially with his womanizing skills!
Which one?
@@beauxr.benoit1374 mainly referring to Kirk. Because it’s about him and I was saying that he gets lucky like Bond.
@@WCLCooke That would also be Q's gadgets.
No, he was William Shatner in space.
Bill, they're not doing impressions of you, they're doing impressions of the way you portrayed Captain James Kirk. Kirk's speech inflection and cadence was unique, to say the least. That's why you've had more impressions done by other actors and comics than any other Star Trek actor.
He knows. He's having fun with it
This plus the fact that impressions and parodies are not the same.
I have known so much BS in my life, I am pretty sure he is flattering his ego by imagining he is being funny when doing this tryhard self-mocking routine while also mixing in serious critique. It's basically as funny as any fake just-kidding approach.
You've said it so well. That was the way he played Captain James T. Kirk.
My Shatner impression will now include the phrase, “Max, you’re beginning to annoy me.”
"Max.......your.......beginningtoannoyme"
"Max....you’re.... beginningtoanNOYme"
Haha, yes!!
4:15 😄😄
That's the thing, is most people, when they do a Shatner, what they're impersonating is Kevin Pollack's impression. I've long thought Belushi's take was closer to the mark than people acknowledged, because he's not doing the cliched take everyone does. Mostly because at the time of the sketch, the cliche hadn't been established.
If you rewatch that Belushi's skit, he actually does drop in the exaggerated pause cadence a little further in.
Yea but nobody is really interested in the impression of the actual man anymore. The Shatner impression has become its own living entity.
yeah, it had been established.
spent my youth on star trek, before snl existed, the cliche was there all along. one of the things that make STOG better than anything that came after.
These impressions are not meant to be accurate they are meant to be funny. They deliberately exaggerate facets of speech and acting for comic effect. That Shatner does not appreciate this is quite funny in its own right.
The fact that William shatner is trolling this entire thing is gold because he is self aware but acting not. Love this man.
This corroborates what Grace Lee Whitney said in her autobiography, "The Longest Trek." She pointed out Shatner's training as a stage actor.
I love William Shatner. This guy has incredible genes, doesn't look a day over 65, yet is 90 + years of age.

@@gadielhernandez6113 nice!

His complete denial of the blatant similarities between his real voice and the impressions is amazing. I love this treasure of a man.
Shatner's sarcasm is always entertaining. He delivers it with such a straight face and dry wit some dont even recognize it.
I’d love to see him and John Cleese take a few jabs at each other lol
Thank you, It wasn't looking like too many were truly getting how playful he was being during this.
He gets it alright he was on have I got news for you in the UK and was bloody brilliant
I'll be honest he had me in the first half. His criticism of MacFarlane seemed almost defensive but afterwards it's obvious he's hamming it up for the camera. Good one Bill!
He was brilliant in Columbo. 2 episodes.
Shatner was one of the most entertaining guests a talk show could have on. He's witty and very insightful.
At first I thought he was in denial, then I was questioning if it was a joke, and then he started praising the bad ones and I knew that he knows
Love it. Can't go wrong with William Shatner's analysis of himself.
“His interpretation of me, lacks a certain masculinity.” 🤣
"Chris Pine can do no harm". Literally the only impression he had no problem with whatsoever
and Bruce Campbell...he laughed cuz he nailed it..and got the reason behind his rhythm too
That's because he sees Pine as a young, fit, good-looking version of himself.
He liked Jim's impression too.
Pine has a lot of small, subtle Shatner mannerisms that he works into the character. I'm sure Bill sees and likes these.
Because Chris Pine is handsome and "masculine" pretty much.
I could watch another half hour of people doing impressions of him, and him not realizing that that is exactly how he came across. HILARIOUS.
It was fun to see a more tongue-in-cheek version of these "expert gives their opinion" videos.
ikr. i love how he just insults or gets angered by anything or anyone.
I agree! I can't tell if the comments on this video are real or not, or if people really don't get that it's tongue-in-cheek. The line where he's like "I don't like Belushi as me but [this thin handsome guy] does it really well." haha!
