Other topic. I talked to a couple of MB guys in northern Sweden some days ago at a Ionity charging station charging big prototype sedans at 800V and about 200kw. One guy told me they did not have preheating, and he was not impressed of charging speed of my cold EV6😂
The advice to use the correct rated TeslaTap is on point. Many don't appreciate the importance of this. I commented on one of Branden Flasch's ID.4 road trip videos that using a 40 amp TeslaTap was risky. He got all bent out of shape. Can't figure out why facts upset folks so much.
I totally love this video! It's always such a privilege to see Tommy @StateOfChargeEV behind the scenes whether it's with Kyle or Dave @OutofspecDave. Tom has so much knowledge to share and there's always so many stories to go with it. Great stuff as always guys!
I'm not in an EV yet, but this quick and dirty rundown on all the chargers is great! That Emporia unit is something that I'll have to consider when I eventually jump into an EV.
And this is how the first EV rock band gets started, I watched the whole thing ( not all in one sitting) but really nerded out and almost understood 75% of what you two were talking about all do to watching both your channels, awesome.
Same here - I watched the whole video over the course of my Saturday, understood about three quarters, enjoyed it all - most particularly the wall of L2 chargers.
Both of you were fantastic on this video! I listened to EVERY word, had a few laughs with you and learned quite a lot! Thank you Kyle and Tom! One of your best informative videos.....
Unbelievable video. The whole thing is worth watching, especially since it features two of my three favorite EV UA-camrs (only missing Tesla Bjorn). All the best.
Love this video! You two guys are the reason I watch Insideevs. I am looking to do something similar at my house (but maybe on a smaller scale). I definitely need to watch this several times! Thanks Tom and Kyle. Also, Tom if you could throw me in the mix for the next charger giveaway, I would appreciate it ☺️
Great video! Tom is a National Treasure for EV owners and anyone considering the best way to charge at home! Minor quibble: Nissan pioneered vehicle-to-home charging in Japan years ago so Ford isn't actually the first. Also, the tint on Tom's F150 light bar looks sharp!
Glad to see you guys hanging out together, you need to hang out more often. Excellent review of ALL of Tom's chargers. Wonder if Tom's ever going to Fort Collins Colorado?
Clearly, Tom is the guru of home EV chargers. Some day, I hope he reviews a few chargers supporting multiple accounts, direct billing, and pricing tiers. These are desperately needed at condominiums / apartments for home charging. I installed and manage an Enel-X Commercial Juicebox. What other brands perform well at a competitive price?
So cool to see Tom interviewed. I watch his content all the time. Great weekend morning coffee time spent. Cool to see a vid shot from him as the guest but in his lair. Thx. Enjoyed greatly. You two rock.
Loved this cross-collab between these two pros. Thanks for the insights and the tours. And wow, that's a lot of EVSEs! It was really interesting to watch Tom go through each one and talk quickly about pros/cons. That could be a great once-a-year video: Tom summarizes his charging wall in today's market context.
Excellent I love hearing about all you discussed. I'm very interested in home backup. I like the videos that both Tom and Kyle put out. It's very helpful. It was excellent to see both of you putting out this video. Put out some more together that cover in depth subjects like this.
Love the clipper creek units. Half of the ones I find in Minnesota or Wisconsin are covered in snow/ice this time of year and I have yet to be disappointed. I have a grizzl-e avalanche edition installed outside that is currently covered in snow and works great and has all winter. Tom had the only good review of it on UA-cam at the time I bought it. Great video guys
I know u wont read this kyle, but maybe a friend of yours will. Imo you dont talk to people - you compete your brain angainst others. Its no fun for us. Learn ti JUST LISTEN and add things at the right time, not while your hostage is still talking. I pray you improve. I really like you and your shows. Im studying for the certification to install chragers so this was perfect a perfect video
Great video for home owners. I live in a condo complex and we are planning an installation for 55 parking stalls. Can anyone recommend a smart charger that will be appropriate for us?
Ha! Made it through all of the video (in segments). Solar with battery backup is a great solution. The battery can be fixed like the Powerwall or any other fixed battery & portable battery backup in the form of a vehicle is a great solution to distributed power. At some point there will be 2nd life EV batteries used in stationary battery applications in homes. Thanks Tom for the through explanation of his get 1 system. Long, but worth it.
There is a small college close to my place that has a free to use Clipper Creek charger. That thing is 10 years old and never goes down. So reliable and sturdy.
Thanks for sharing your set up with us. I've got the same Sunny Boy inverter installed in 2007, still going strong. Neither of our EVs will do V2G, so I may go down the battery storage route.
Awesome video. Love the collaboration between two channels. The charge station pro is awesome. FORD really knew their customers would want to be able to charge their trucks to full every night even if it was just 8-9 hours at home. Also the Home integration system is very cool. Expensive for a back up system BUT if you are going solar anyway, any 10 kw inverter you will get is actually at least half of the whole cost of the home integration system components and you can opt to get a 10 kw inverter even though Tom only got a 4 kw. I know this because I have a lightning, I purchased the back up system, they sent me a 4KW inverter and I returned it for a 10 kw one.
Tom and Kyle, I am one of those that installed the Ford HIS via SunRun. I have existing SunPower solar panels that provide AC via microinverters. Realizing that our new Lightning would require more KWH, we added an additional eight SunRun DC panels(these run through the Delta bidirectional). Although the HIS does function when power is lost, it only does so if we manually disconnect the SunRun panels(via bottom switch of the Delta). If the SunRun panels remain connected, every backed-up circuit flashes with interrmittent power. SunRun has yet to figure out how to make it function properly.
Great content. I learn something every time. There will shortly be a CCS to J-plug adapter for those older vehicles I'm sure. My problem with mobile charging is always the FMC over heating. Am hoping Tom will start testing at 100 degrees F too. Hopefully most of the after market stuff handles it like a champ.
Thank you for the tour, the history is very interesting. Clearly, I have too much time on my hands... I am a future Rivian owner and since you both own Rivian's I was hoping to hear something about the Rivian charger. Can you share anything about the Rivian charger? Just wondering if I should purchase the Rivian charger or an aftermarket charger. Cheers!
I bought the Chargepoint unit on your recommendation Tom and I'm very happy with it. And I specifically remember your comment about the cord staying flexible in freezing weather. Thank you. On a different note, Kyle, you were going to buy a Lightning? And, if I remember correctly, you have a Taycan on order? Jeez, how do you afford to own all these expensive vehicles??? Do you have a side job you're not telling us about?
When power goes out it’s typically very regional, for example, if my power is out even for several days it’s typically not out at work in town and vice versa albeit for a much shorter timeframe. Tom you have touched on this before. So that being said the system we are building counts on a very small lithium battery 5-6 KWH that serves a critical load (refrigeration outlets and lighting) sub panel through an inverter charger. The Lightning is being set up through the 30A, 240 outlet in the bed to plug into a generator transfer switch that feeds the primary panel. By night the Lightning runs all loads in the house with some management, including the charger to bring the critical load battery back to full. By day the critical load battery keeps the food cold the internet on while the Lightning is recharging at work. If work is out also, we are still covered for three days.
I LOVE THIS episode! A quick walkthrough of so many Level 2 chargers. I'm all about Level 2 charging. Too much attention is given to fast charging in my opinion.
We have a Clipper Creek I put in for our 2017 Bolt. Great service & unit still servicing our Bolt & now I use it at home for the Rivian. It is outdoors under the solar panels. We charge during the lowest rate times.
Randomly dropping a 30 second safety tip 43mins into an hour and sixteen minutes video and then other one later on. XD Thanks for the non-hardwired charged tips! I've let Dad know he needs to replace the powerpoint yearly. He upgraded the powerpoint around the first week we got the car so at least it's easy to know how old it is.
Being retired and living in a community where we can walk to most of the services we need I put about 4-5,000 miles a year on our vehicle. There are days it never leaves the driveway. There are many in our community of 24,000 that fit my driving profile. I am pretty confident we will do just fine with level 1 charging thus I was strongly considering the Clipper Creek for it’s quality and safety ratings. The new Grizzl-e mini appears to be a step up from the CC.
I'd love to be able to sit down for a 3 hour geek out session with you guys about this set up as I'm very interested. Please keep videos like this coming.
A good solar controller reads the battery and cuts back on what it passes to the system. The nice thing about DC power is that many different sources can input at the same time if they match the system voltage. Great system. RV solar/ battery systems work the same way. Get a few Lithium batteries and build your own "power wall" type system.
I had one of the earlier Juicebox's that wasn't a smart unit. I plugged mine in to my welder plug and charged my 500e at 30A with it. No connectivity, but it always worked. I remember you set the max current with a potentiometer inside the unit.
It’s a long one but it’s for the nerds! Thanks for having us over, Tom. This was so much fun ⚡️
Long, but solid. I’ve learned a ton from you guys. Loving my MYLR 👍
I watched to the end. The solar generation back up power. I also have a 60 Amp Tesla mini tap.
Other topic. I talked to a couple of MB guys in northern Sweden some days ago at a Ionity charging station charging big prototype sedans at 800V and about 200kw. One guy told me they did not have preheating, and he was not impressed of charging speed of my cold EV6😂
Awesome show.
Watched the whole thing and now watching the state of charge video. Always love the videos and info. Keep up the good work!
Love Kyle's senior moment as he's looking at the Lucid charging and asks if it will charge a non Lightning :)
My two favorite EV nerds, nerding out together. Enjoyed every minute of it.
Man, this was the best team up since Batman and Superman!!! Really good work guys, great video.
This is one of the best EV videos to date in 2023 😂
Laughed out loud at 48:45 when you say "If you have time, of course you have time if your still watching this." Hilarious!
Thanks for the visit, Tom. amazing conversation. Sat through every commercial. You’re welcome, Kyle. Keep up the great content.
The collab I never knew I needed
The advice to use the correct rated TeslaTap is on point. Many don't appreciate the importance of this.
I commented on one of Branden Flasch's ID.4 road trip videos that using a 40 amp TeslaTap was risky. He got all bent out of shape. Can't figure out why facts upset folks so much.
two of my favorites, nerding out, and Tom what a garage and basement! great stuff!
Thanks for the tour of Tom’s Wall of Fame!
Love Tom!! He’s literally the reason I chose to buy a Lucid Air after he tested one. He’s awesome!
Thank you!
Woah, hold up now… @2:38 did you really just say NOS equipped with CRX, and twin turbo RX7?! I have a completely newfound respect for you Tom!👍
Yep - and I had a Delorean for a while😁
It was worthwhile watching just for the general feedback of EVSEs and then saving the home backup system for last. Really Cool
I totally love this video! It's always such a privilege to see Tommy @StateOfChargeEV behind the scenes whether it's with Kyle or Dave @OutofspecDave. Tom has so much knowledge to share and there's always so many stories to go with it. Great stuff as always guys!
I enjoyed the hell out of this. Thanks guys
I'm not in an EV yet, but this quick and dirty rundown on all the chargers is great! That Emporia unit is something that I'll have to consider when I eventually jump into an EV.
I don't own a house, I don't have an EV, but I watched this entire video... Congratulations for putting together this video!
This is the ultimate scooby doo and Batman crossover episode
Wow. I loved it too. Thanks gentleman. Happily been watching you both for about 2-3 year or more. All the best. Lotsa love to all ❤❤❤
Obviously I dont know Tom but from watching all his videos he seems like one of the nicest guys in the world
Thank you
This is my new favorite UA-cam video
camera work was done really well
Tom's wall is a museum of home chargers. He will be able to charge admission in years to come to all EV geeks.
Really enjoyed this one.
Great episode guys! Lots of good honest information
And this is how the first EV rock band gets started, I watched the whole thing ( not all in one sitting) but really nerded out and almost understood 75% of what you two were talking about all do to watching both your channels, awesome.

You and Tom make a great EV media duo (and Martyn and Dom too of course). Great video and hopefully you guys get to collab more often.
Learned quite a bit for those of us just getting into this sphere - Thanks!
Unbelievable video. The whole thing is worth watching, especially since it features two of my three favorite EV UA-camrs (only missing Tesla Bjorn). All the best.

I reckon this is my best 1 hour 16 mins and 23 secs ev education...
thank you so much and keep up the excellent videos...🎉
That wasn't boring at all. Watched every minute
The Ford Lightning Frunk is such a great design. Lower load in.
Glad to see you guys hanging out together, you need to hang out more often. Excellent review of ALL of Tom's chargers. Wonder if Tom's ever going to Fort Collins Colorado?
I will when Kyle opens up his new garage.
I must be weird because I love every minutes of it especially when kyle ask if he the Ford charger would work on his Rivian Truck. that was funny .
Clearly, Tom is the guru of home EV chargers. Some day, I hope he reviews a few chargers supporting multiple accounts, direct billing, and pricing tiers. eMotorWerks is right here in my home town of San Carlos, which is also the founding city of Tesla. I also have an early JuiceBox EVSE too.
I guess I’m officially a nerd. Thank you guys so much !
Great tour, the length was appropriate for the content! 👍🏻
Do love my Emporia charger. Also, really feeling the tint on the Lightning.

Great video, loved it! Great looking basement,
Fascinating overall review
I am still rocking my OpenEVSE. I event converted it over to Tesla. :)
wow, fantastic tour and explanations! Thanks to both of you!
You guys are having WAY too much fun! Great info.
Tinting on the Lightning looks good 👍
Great video Kyle. Love When you and Tom get together. Beautiful House Tom.
Great video guys!
Tesla should make a magic destination charger with J177

Yep. We got our JuiceBox for about 100 bucks. Our county paid for the rest.
This is one heck of a great video guys …… Thanks!
Good job on tinting the light bar. If I ever got a Lightning that is the first thing I'd do.
Thanks, this was my first intro to all these chargers. Great video!!
I bought the Chargepoint unit on your recommendation Tom and I'm very happy with it. And I specifically remember your comment about the cord staying flexible in freezing weather. Thank you.

You guys had influenced me to get an EV
Commendable Competence; Elaborate Multiplicity.
Tinted light bar 👌
Owning EVs has made me just as curious about electrical as I am about the cars now. Thanks for the video.
Geeking out on home charging, love it!! ⚡⚡
Just got the black emporia and it looks a lot better. Cable seems better than my Rivian brand charger.
We have a Clipper Creek I put in for our 2017 Bolt. Great service & unit still servicing our Bolt & now I use it at home for the Rivian. It is outdoors under the solar panels. We charge during the lowest rate times.
How about Lectron? They seem to have some nice stuff. Need to get one on you wall.
Their new unit is in one of the boxes we show as upcoming reviews
Excellent Episode. Really appreciate the detail!

If you use your truck for backup, after a few days, you can always go to a fast charger and pickup a few more days of electricity.
Saving this one to watch later- love the nerdy videos!
I'd love to be able to sit down for a 3 hour geek out session with you guys about this set up as I'm very interested. Please keep videos like this coming.
Tom has a geeked-out video on his channel “State of Charge”
@@lemongavine hi
J1772 is a great example of why you should never let electrical engineers design anything which is going to involve communications or usability.
This is the nerdiest video on UA-cam. Well done fellas!!

The nice thing about DC power is that many different sources can input at the same time if they match the system voltage. Great system. RV solar/ battery systems work the same way. It would be useful to learn about the 25W DC chargers that are popping up for home and business use.
I had one of the earlier Juicebox's that wasn't a smart unit. I plugged mine in to my welder plug and charged my 500e at 30A with it. No connectivity, but it always worked. I remember you set the max current with a potentiometer inside the unit.
I have one of those boxes also - I charge my EV using a NEMA 6-20 plug on a 20A circuit.
