Man I love when Dave and Kyle take a road trip. Dave had me cracking up 38min in when he realized that they are only supposed to use to Tesla chargers…lol the whole point of the road trip.
I have to say that Tom and Pete really won this one. Kyle was driving like a maniac with no wipers in the rain and stalking vehicles bumper to bumper and was driving at questionable speeds. To add though, this is the first time I'm seeing Dave and he's awesome. You got a new subscriber Dave!
I was always eager to get back to this video after taking breaks needing to tend to obligations. The vid was immersive, entertaining and very informative. Really cool to learn so much about the F-150 Lightning, charging networks and the adapter. The conversations and discussions were delightful. Thank you all very much!
I can't believe I watched the whole thing over two days. Better entertainment than most shows. It's great to highlight the road trip capabilities of vehicles other than Tesla's.
I stopped at the 16 minute marked and noticed how disappointed Dave was when Kyle said "heated seats off" and turned them off.... HAHAHHAHAHAA . That was funny (to me).
45:11 Over time more and more Tesla drivers will acept and help drivers with different charge port locations. I helped an ID.4 driver in Sweden by moving my Model 3 to another spot just recently. I was using a charger with another spot available right next to mine and all other chargers except for one were in use, so I moved over like 4 spots to the only one left to make two chargers next to each other available to the ID.4 driver so that he was able to plug his car in. We are all just EV drivers so we should stick together as a team and help out others who need two spots for their car to plug in.
I think this was a limiting belief thinking Tesla drivers were giving them looks. They said everyone was nice when talking to them. But in any case people are upset they’ll adjust, and hopefully more charging stations come online.
@@zgdafzgdaf4264 while there's no doubt there are some Tesla owners who don't like that their exclusive network is being opened up to other drivers the vast majority I've met and talked to just see it as a positive for EVs as a whole
This channel is awesome! Just watched the whole thing. As a lightning owner, I will remember that 1 percent issue. Can't believe it let you get (nearly) over that off ramp. Great content!
I have been looking forward to this video ever since Tom released his video about this trip. It was so much fun watching all 4 of you laughing and enjoying your road trip. Just in the few days since your trip, there are now 3 NACS compatible Supercharger sites on I-95 in North Carolina. I have also noticed a V3 in Ripley WV that was not initially NACS compatible, is now listed as having been upgraded. This is an exciting time for road tripping EVs with so many new stations opening up with larger number of pedestals. Your first stop at the almost full location was a hoot, with you parking on top of the curb! Way to go Dave, with pushing the dead truck the last few yards to the Supercharger mid-trip!
When driving the lightning manually (no bluecruise) if you press the accelerator just enough on a downhill to prevent regen you can effectively “coast” without putting the truck in neutral. The power meter will show a blue line when you are using energy, and a geeen line when you are regening so as long as you see no blue and no green you are coasting! Pro trip from a lightning owner with 36k miles 😎
My wife and I left from Sebastian, FL to Central Maine over a three-day, 1,600 mile journey starting on March 4th, all on AE and it was extremely good. Even chargers that have been historic problems (Manchester, CT) were up and running well. I can't complain.
Hi from Denmark. Watch this video with a smile on my face. What a great race and important testing. That being said, I’m glad that every Europe charger is CCS 😁 then we easier can mix the different companies chargers.
What a great video guys. Appreciate the great content Kyle and Dave! I am happy to have the same type of relationship with my father and EVs, cherish these moments for sure.
Watched all of this 3 hour video, the banter between you and Dave was hilarious. You both have the ability to tell and story and it kept my interest the entire length of the video. I can’t wait for the the trip to California
i really enjoyed these 2 Race videos. Even watched Dave's Behind the scenes video. Thank you guys for the amazing content and for testing all this for us!!!
The father and son moments of this vid makes it a great addition for a slow weekend afternoon. Still amazing that the supposed "inferior" EA is only 6min slower than Superchargers with all things held constant, which can easily be closed had Tom not taken a wrong turn & if Dave had forced Kyle to charge a few % more after nearly stranding themselves. Fun trip. Thanks for the time and effort.
I loved these videos. They do highlight why EVs may never fulfill a common use case for vehicles in the Western US: they add too much down time to long road trips to be economically feasible. You showed that the Lightning was a great road tripper for someone who is vacationing in an EV. If that's what my use was, I think I might buy a Lightning, even though I hate pickups. With that boost, it is a much better casual roadtripper than anything anyone else makes that I have tried or seen so far. Unfortunately, when you talk about time spent charging, there were a couple of things you left out: 1) if you were not in a "race", each stop would have been extended by shopping or passengers deciding to use the bathrooms after the charging was complete, and 2) you only timed the actual charging process, not the opportunity costs of slowing down, exiting, pulling up to the chargers, plugging in, and getting back up to speed (you did talk about Tom & Pete's Google Maps debacle, but not the rest)--how much further would you have been had you kept traveling at 80 MPH for that whole time?. Our experience with driving a trip of 1091 miles one way in a Model S LR added 6+ hours to my normal with an ICE vehicle, and a Model X added 5:45. We tried a Model Y, but turned around when it was clear that the first charging was so soon that we would add about 7 hours. With a Fusion or a Camry we have 2 stops that total less than 30 minutes lost. With a Mercedes GLX 350D, it's 15 minutes faster than the sedans because we only have one stop for 15 minutes total ET loss. EVs just suck at long distance travel where time is money. And, even when I travel on vacation, I am not at all interested in the sights along the way. I have already seen them when the trip WAS the vacation. Now I just want to get to where my loved ones are.
It occurs to me that if you use more than one spot while charging you should carry an orange cone you can mark off the spot you are blocking. It would save confusion and possible confrontation.
48:41 I like how the illusion of taking up 2 spots at a supercharger will be just fine got shattered immediately. It’s all fun and games until there is a line waiting and there are open charging pedestals because some are taking 2 spots. That didn’t happen here, but if they arrived 10 minutes later it would have. Gonna be a lot of uncomfortableness.
I agree. I just took my Lightning from Palm Springs, CA to Vegas. I used a Tesla charger 3 times over the trip. It gave me anxiety pulling into stations with lots of cars. Thankfully they never got too busy. I was able to use the handicap parking spot 2 times which is wider and didn't take two spots. The 3rd time I was able to use the far end spot. In the future I will plan to only use the massive chargers (60+) where it's less likely. Either way, I wouldn't want to try this on Thanksgiving that's for sure!
Tom and Pete did great. Zero mistakes and EA stations that all worked perfectly (which is not exactly common) still lost to Kyle and Dave because the Tesla Supercharger network is so well placed for long distance travelling. Image a more common situation with problematic third part charging and the difference would grow dramatically as will the frustration of the driver dependant on third party charging infrastructure.
