The Pontiac GTO is a front-engine, rear-drive, two-door, four or five passenger automobile manufactured and marketed by the Pontiac division of General Motors over four generations from 1963-1974 in the United States - with a fifth generation by GM's Australian subsidiary, Holden, for 2004-2006 model years.
The first generation of the GTO is credited as popularizing the muscle car market segment in the 1960s.[2][3] The Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.[4][5]
For the 1964 and 1965 model years, the GTO was an optional package on the intermediate-sized Pontiac Lemans. The 1964 GTO vehicle identification number (VIN) started with 22, while the 1965 GTO VIN started with 237. The GTO became a separate model from 1966 to 1971 (VIN 242...). It became an optional package again for the 1972 and 1973 intermediate LeMans. For 1974, the GTO was an optional trim package on the compact-sized Ventura.
The GTO was selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968.
The GTO model was revived from 2004 to 2006 model years as a captive import for Pontiac, a left-hand drive version of the Holden Monaro, itself a coupé variant of the Holden Commodore.
General Motors redesigned its A-body line for 1968, with more curvaceous, semi-fastback styling, which was a revival of a streamlining on all GM products from 1942 until 1950 as demonstrated on the Pontiac Streamliner. The wheelbase was shortened to 112.0 in (2,845 mm) on all two-door models. Overall length was reduced 5.9 inches (150 mm) and height dropped half an inch (12 mm), but overall weight was up about 75 lb (34 kg). Pontiac abandoned the familiar vertically stacked headlights in favor of a horizontal layout, but made hidden headlights available at extra cost. The concealed headlights were a popular option. The signature hood scoop was replaced by dual scoops on either side of a prominent hood bulge extending rearward from the protruding nose.
A unique feature was the body-color Endura front bumper. It was designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at low speeds. Pontiac touted this feature heavily in advertising, showing hammering at the bumper to no discernible effect.[16] A GTO could be ordered with "Endura delete", in which case the Endura bumper would be replaced by a chrome front bumper and grille from the Pontiac LeMans.
Powertrain options remained substantially the same as in 1967, but the standard GTO engine's power rating rose to 350 hp (260 kW) at 5,000 rpm. At mid-year, a new Ram Air package, known as Ram Air II, became available. It included freer-breathing cylinder heads, round port exhaust, and the 041 cam. The 'official' power rating was not changed. Another carry-over from 1967 was the four-piston caliper disc brake option. However, most 1968 models had drum brakes all around. The 1968 model year was also the last year the GTOs offered separate crank-operated front door vents.
Concealed windshield wipers, which presented a cleaner appearance hidden below the rear edge of the hood, were standard on the GTO. A popular option, actually introduced during the 1967 model year, was a hood-mounted tachometer.

Chris, I agree- NO PINSTRIPES!!! 2 classmates got brand-spank in’ new Yorktown Blue Metallic GTOs. 1 clean body w/ some different aftermarket wheels/tires, the other got pinstripes- white + blue vinyl top!
Not really sure which looked worse- the stripes or top…. both contributed to ruining the ‘goat’ lines to that ‘68….. the other 1 WAS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

I have a method for painting that I think works...before painting, I put the parts and the paint can I to the oven. Then I turn the over to WARM (It's a gas oven) for around 60 seconds, then I turn the oven off and wait a few minutes . When I take the paint and parts out, they are warm to the touch but not overheated. After I finish with either primer or color, I put the parts back in the oven, turn it back to WARM for a minute then to OFF to "bake" the parts.

Beautiful build, mixed feelings on the kit. Yes, it's a new tooling, but it's a "nostalgia made" kit. They could've done a new curbside kit of that car that would've been on par with Tamiya's, Aoshima's or Fujimi's curbsides kits. But they chose nostalgia and emulated a tooling from the '60s. And that attitude of "nostalgia sells" that Round2 have annoys me. Mostly when we KNOW they can do such cool kits as their 2021 Charger or their 2017 Camaro, or their soon to be released curbside Bronco. I gotta admit that I said that if Revell was to sell a kit of the Bronco with an engine, I'd buy Revell's over Round2. That said, it's only because I LOVE building engines. There's nothing wrong per say with a curbside. But if I can choose between a curbside and a kit featuring an engine, I choose the one with the engine.
So, mixed feeling on that kit. It's not that it's not well done, it's that it looks like it is a kit that was made out from a promo back in the 60s.

    • @MrModelworx
      @MrModelworx Рік тому

It looks like a kit that is made from a promo in the 60s.... That's because it is!
It's a copy of the MPC promo tooling from 68. As much as some people don't care for it, nostalgia sells and it sells very well!.

Watched the whole vid, and as a longtime fan I gotta say this just isn’t one of your better builds.
Panel line tint works REALLY well in the panel lines.
The pinstripes were used on the lower body character lines.
Pontiacs ‘Morrokide’ vinyl interiors had an almost flat gloss finish. Same with the dash top.
Just a little research on the real cars-two minutes on any GTO page-would work wonders in helping you impart your goal of great modeling for your audience.

Chris, You're not alone with the paint problems. We've been having the same wacky weather patterns here in Michigan. The last three or four kits that I have done went together with zero problems but I had to strip and re-paint all of them due to one problem or another. I am currently working on one that has had to be re-painted three times. After I finally got the paint right, the clear messed up on me. I think I finally got it right tonight though. I hate putting out a poor looking model on my channel but I am about ready to move on with this one. Not to long ago I did a 64 1/2 Mustang convertible in the Colorshot Speeding Ticket and it turned out beautifully. Have you tried the Colorshot clear yet? It shines almost as good as 2k at a fraction of the cost and mess. Spring weather is right around the corner. With any luck so are the decent paint days!

Had a problem with paint on a 66 Chevelle station wagon by Revell with Rustoleum paint and primer which actually orange pealed the plastic not the paint, go figure. Problem with the paint. I was able to fix it with a LOT of sanding and a fog on two tone paint scheme 🤬🇨🇦

Too cold and too much humidity could cause this. Spray paint results work better when the can itself is warm and warmer outside. That's from my experience. Probably going to switch to an airbrush soon.

You did a great job on the build. I'm very disappointed in Round 2 lately. The people at Round2 are doing new tooling kits as if they are tooled in the 1960s. I understand they are trying to save a buck making curbside kits, but if that is what they're making I'll be taking my hard earned dollars for a kit that looks like it was actually tooled in this century.

Yeah the pedals molded into the tub really speaks to the (lack of) effort they put in.

That's the thing that annoys me with Round2. And per say, I wouldn't call that a proper "curbside". I mean as an example, Tamiya make curbside kits, and while the engine is molded in the undercarriage, they DON'T mold everything else in the undercarriage, suspension are more detailed, exhausts are normally their own parts, and so on. As you said this kit is a new tooling, but it look as if it had been done in the '60s. And that's because Round 2, STILL think that what's selling model kit to adults today, is nostalgia. And this kit was engineered with nostalgia in mind, not curbside in mind. And we KNOW that Round 2 could've done a curbside kit that would've been on par with anything Tamiya, Aoshima or Fujimi! But since they still go with "Nostalgia sells", it is new tooling that emulate toolings of the old. I actually would be fine with such a kit, if it was AT LEAST 10-15 buck less than, for exemple, their AWESOME 2021 Charger R/T kit! But as it is now. Nah. I'll pass.

I agree, Round 2's decals may look good however, they are brittle and often fall apart when applying even with decal solutions. The AMT Surfer Van is one example. Plus removing the decals is another story. I have many years of building experience. I have kits that are 20 years old and the decals are easier to apply without any problems.

Why don't model manufacturers make more kits like the old Hasegawa or Johan kits where there were only the main pieces? Don't need to waste time on all the small front end assembly and motor assembly.

The HPI guys are great, but this kit is a joke, poor tooling for a new kit, and skimping out on the motor, watch them issue it again in a few months with the motor just like they did with the chevy II wagon
