From the mid-1950s, the gasser class was one of the most popular categories in drag racing. Small cars with short wheelbases were perfect for hot rodders to convert to gassers. You stripped them down, jacked them up, replaced the engine and off they went. The small size of the Henry J made it perfect for a gasser. The Henry J was manufactured by Kaiser-Frazer Corp. and was only available for 4 years. The Henry J was named after company president Henry J Kaiser and was sold from 1950 to 1954. Its small size was not what consumers were looking for and only just over 7,000 were sold. The Gasser class started around this time and were built until the mid 1970s. They were named Gasser because they ran on gasoline rather than methanal or nitromethane. They were not as fast as nitro cars, but were very popular with spectators.
Features
Detailed 427 SOHC engine.
Opening doors and opening hood
Complete gasser racing suspension and optional wheelie bars
True to original Ansen wheels & Simpson drag chute pack
The Henry J was an American automobile built by the Kaiser-Frazer Corporation and named after its chairman, Henry J. Kaiser. Production of six-cylinder models began in July 1950, and four-cylinder production started shortly after Labor Day, 1950. The official public introduction was on September 28, 1950. The car was marketed through 1954.
A compact car design proposal was made by Howard "Dutch" Darrin that utilized the already approved future Kaiser, but with a shortened wheelbase.[5] However, Henry J. Kaiser wanted an entirely new car and decided on a design developed by American Metal Products, "a supplier of frames and springs for car seats."[5] In an attempt to improve the appearance of the car, Darrin contributed a "dip" to the beltline, windshield, and rear window as well as adding little tailfins.[5]
To accomplish the low price objective, the Henry J was designed to carry the fewest possible components, and built from the fewest parts. To save body stamping costs, early Henry Js did not have rear trunk lids; owners had to access the trunk by folding down the rear seat. Another cost-saving measure was to offer the car only as a two-door sedan with fixed rear windows. Also lacking in the basic version were glove compartment, armrests, passenger-side inside sun visor and flow-through ventilation.
Power for the Henry J was delivered by a 134.2 cu in (2.2 L) four-cylinder 68 hp (51 kW; 69 PS) engine.[2] Later models were available with a 161 cu in (2.6 L) L-head six-cylinder engine producing 80 hp (60 kW; 81 PS) .[6] The engines were supplied by Willys-Overland; the four-cylinder engine was the same engine used in the CJ-3A series Jeeps, with only slight modifications to component parts; the block and internal components were interchangeable with the CJ-3A engine. The Henry J production provided a substantial revenue source for Willys-Overland.[7] This standard engine could achieve up to 35 mpg‑US (6.7 L/100 km; 42 mpg‑imp) when driven conservatively.[8]
Before the Henry J was released to the market the first production models were taken to Arkansas for road testing. Experts computed that driving 100 miles (161 km) on the roughest roads would equal 5,000 miles (8,047 km) of normal driving.
Gassers are based on closed body production models[clarification needed] from the 1930s to mid-1960s, which have been stripped of extraneous weight and jacked up using a beam axle or tubular axle to provide better weight distribution on acceleration (beam axles are also lighter than an independent front suspension), though a raised stock front suspension is common as well. Common weight reduction techniques include fiberglass body panels, stripped interiors, and Lexan windows (sometimes color tinted).
The 1933-36 Willys coupés and pickups were very popular gassers.[4] The best-known would be the 1933 Willys 77.[4] While neither cheap nor plentiful, it was a competitive and lightweight choice satisfying the rules of the era (which required a ladder frame). At least one gasser incorporated a Willys frame in a Ford body to placate their sponsor while keeping it track-legal.[5] [4] Keith Ferrell's Dogcatcher, for instance, was a 1936 delivery with a fuel injected small-block Chevrolet, built for the class; in 1967, Ferrell deliberately left something off to run it in B/Altered (later, with a supercharger, in BB/A). - Авто та транспорт
Seeing the name Orange Whip makes me think of John Candy in the movie The Blues Brothers. "Who wants an orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips."
Paint with music. It has become one of your signatures. :)
Pro tip: In your editor set the original audio at 75% and the music score at 25%.
Blues Brothers is the answer to the orange whipped
I like the music. Sometimes I can hear it , while I’m working on my models.
orange whips? you want an orange whip?- John Candy in the Blues Brothers!
I think I've said it before, but this channel is costing me a fortune in cool models lol!
In the past few weeks i've bought four MPC stock car kits because of this channel, waiting on the GTO super stocker to arrive, not cheap here in the UK either, about £35 a pop : /, it's a great hobby though and i'll be ok with builds for a while.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SAME HERE
Henry Js were built by Kaiser Motors and named for the company's founder, Henry J. Kaiser. They were also sold at Sears stores under the Allstate name. Kaiser only lasted for eight years,; it started in 1945 and merged with Willys-Overland in 1953.
A little further back in history....Henry Kaiser's company built ships during WWII. He developed a health plan for his workers in the shipyards because he felt
that a healthy employee would be more productive (of course, he was correct). The resulting health care company today is known as Kaiser Permanente.
After the war, the company also built home appliances like refrigerators and (I think) washing machines. The appliances were sold (by Sears) under the Kelvinator name.
The original engine used in the Henry J wasn’t a powerful engine. It used a Continental flathead four cylinder, possibly 134 cubic inch, and related to some farm tractor and industrial engines of the time. They came with a three speed column shift transmission.
The Henry J was built as an economy car, as was Willys, and very light as compared to what GM, Chrysler, and Ford were doing. The Big Three didn’t follow the economy idea of that time to that level.
These Revell gasser kits are reissues of kits from the late ‘60’s, when it was common to see Ohio George, Big John, SWC, Pittman, et al, in Hot Rod magazine, and similar magazines, until NHRA quit gassers and altereds due to funny cars and evolution of dragsters, and ?safety?.
Yes, I am a member of Kaiser Permanente Healthcare here in So Cal
@@robertmann7277 I was also a member of Kaiser Permanente Healthcare when I lived in Denver. Unfortunately, they are only in a handful of states.
This is sad because I felt it was one of the best plans I ever had. It should be a model for what national healthcare should be.
@@urbanurchin5930 I agree- they have been extremely good to me over the years
I like the background music.
The Blues Brothers. One of my all time favorites.
Yes, please continue music during the paint segment. I thought something was wrong with my computer until the text came up!
I remember those Henry gassers back in the day. Always crowd pleasers because everyone else was running boring old Fords and Chevies.
Loved the Orange Whip reference to the Blues Brothers! Great build too!!
Ya get me ma’ cheese whiz boy? Lol nice build Chris.
Yes!
I like the music , but it usually puts me to sleep, when I wake up the video has long been over!
Painting while listening to music, especially : Fresh Fallen Snow, Morning Mandolin & Jincheng Zhang - Discussion Background Instrumental. Is very calming 🇬🇷
Great job.,liked video with music on
i dig that crazy music, man
Excellent Chris, hey bring back the music, you're my source of calming office music when I am pouring through too many needless and boring Emails! I used to just play jazz or soft rock, now I look for HipGuys, B R I N G IT BACK PRETTY PLEASE :)
Sir,
Painting with your signature tune in the back ground please.
Falling Leave's Pretty please.
Suits your style indeed.
Nice build. Hmmmm...this goes in the gotta have list. Thanks
Yupper..!! Very cool .. I likey.! So many schemes could be done too.!!
Well Chris I prefer to hear music when you paint but I do like hearing your cans Rattle 😃. Love the build as always 👍
Very nice build! I’m glad they brought this kit back, always wanted one. A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile. I miss the tunes 🎶🎵
Very nice build, gassers are my favorite drag cars. I like the music I listen to music when I build.
I’m used to hearing the same guitar , banjo song . Kinda miss it . 🙂
Of all Revell's gassers, I built them all except for the Henry J. My loss-- that monster Ford SOHC 427 is awesome!
These cars are often run with tinted glass now. With the printed templates this is easy to do using stationery report covers for acetate -- blue, red, or even smokey gray look cool.
If you mount the seatbelt decals on aluminum foil and then cut them out, it's easier to drape them on the seat and without the decal snuggling into the sear texture.
I like painting those headers VHT flat white -- they bring out the other colours in the engine bar.
That red REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT tag on the decal sheet would look great hung off the parachute pack.
Nice job, Chris. I think I'll go looking for this one!
I'm Dan, Martha's my wife. Most of the Henry Js and Allstates were built at the Willow Run plant in Michigan, the same plant Ford built to build more B-24 Bombers, the plane my dad piloted in WW2, that any other F-24 plant.
Got both of mine yesterday and can't wait to build mine. I bought the Model King version a few years ago and there are a couple differences like rims and decals but this reissue is still in fantastic condition. GOOO REVELL
And I'm going to have to get this one next month I really enjoyed the review on it I got the Godzilla's go-kart all I have to do is start painting and assembling it now I want to get this one great job I love the way it turned out
I do miss the music when you are spraying paint.
I heard your voice again Wednesday, and I enjoyed that.
I love your build, but always build for you!
Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Love Henry J. If you are intimidatined by flash- you're in the wrong business
Orange whip. John candy in the blues Brothers
It's now winter here in Oregon time to get back into the hobby. Just bought a 40s Willy gasser truck.
I like these old kits. These make perfect hot rods.
Super Sweet Drippin Styrene Goodness Chris!!!!
Oh yeah! Thanks!
I build recent the Revell Thames panel truck gasser. The kit was ahwsome! everything opens and the fit was "Tamiya" quality! That was a big surprise to me!
The Henry J you are building is in the same style. Nice build!
Back in the day, when I bought my first copy of this kit, it came with a 78 rpm vinyl record called "Jumpin J" which was a conversation by 2 guys at a drag strip seeing and explaining what a gasser and Henry J was. Revel did a few of these records but the Henry J was the only one I ever had.
AMT's 1968 Shelby Mustang came with a 45 of Dan Gurney giving commentary as he drove one around Riverside raceway. THX
Three Orange Whips all around .... John Candy in Blues Brothers!
Thank you!!! You are awesome 👌 just got back into building and have watched your videos on the builds you are doing. As they are the same models I've bought and are building or going to build. Great stuff your putting out there!!! Thank you again!!!!!
That kit just entered my must have list, tks for this demo vid.
Blues Brothers!
This is a win-win. It’s a Henry J, and it’s orange. Nice job, Chris.
I love ALL of the builds you do, but I like'em better with the music!
I vote for the music. I always enjoy it, except that, at the end of this vid, I had the sudden urge to run out for tacos!
Nice job, got mine last week over here in Scotland, radiused the rear arches so it rides lower at the rear, fitting the 396 Hemi from the 32 Ford kit and color will be jade green. Great little kit, will buy another.
On my build list!!!!!!! 👍
It's a go with the music.
This ALMOST gave me the "Willis" (also made by Kaiser Motors, like this Henry J). But the Henry J could ALSO be bought from the Sears Catalog and delivered by freight train as the "Sears Allstate Coupe". This Henry ain't THAT. With A GIANT HEMI and a B&M Hydro Stick trans I'd bet THIS one could get past the stock Henry J's top speed of 60 just a few feet beyond the start line. It must have been a rush...
A GREAT build, Chris. Again, your detailing is amazing. Thanks for doing this!
You did a great job with that kit; especially, your assembly of that multi piece hood. Very nice color choice.
Nice to see you using super glue gel, which I think is the best invention for modelers since Testors silver. Lol.
Big shoutout to Revell for the dash gauges and the seat belt decals. They are doing the dash decals in a lot of their kits now.
Please don’t cut out the “rock video” section. I like the music. Just maybe talk about the small cans of spray paint you used, and be sure to put up graphics on all of the brush paints.
3 orange whips! - The blues brothers.
I kind of like the spray paint scenes without music it's very relaxing just hearing the spray..lol. Maybe you can hum us a tune while you're doing it.😃
Super cool I don't recall ever seeing this one before. I really like yellow cars and orange. Can you do an orange one sometime soon. That's if you take request lol. Looked more yellow when spraying turned out like butterscotch still cool maybe cooler. Now it looks orange lol. I gotta get my eye's checked but the VA takes forever to get anything done. I just heard you say orange.lmao
Can never go wrong with a gasser ✌😎
(24 & 25ttf18th scale in metal & would be cool ! )
That car with a blown 427 ......
talk about a handful ... but what crazy fun !
Thank you for the build😎🏁
Painting, DEFINITELY NO MUSIC is much better!!! Auwsome model.
Thanks one of my favorites.
You are the master of modeling
I have the original model that I built a few years ago. Love how some of these older kits are reappearing. Keep building those kits. The hood on mine fits nice and snug with no problems.
Cool, thanks!
“Orange Whip…” that comes from the Blue Brothers!! John Candy said it!! :)
The painting works better with music, it helps cover up the white noise the exhaust fan gives off. Other than that, great video.
awesome kits👍🏻👍🏻 What I love about revell. And amt kits they they always have some chrome parts for old classic cars
Every few years I come back to building these kits, always a pleasure to build along with you and I often use your colour schemes 👍 Do u ever want to have a break and start a different hobby like RC cars/boats or planes..? That's what I do it keeps it fresh and exciting for me 👍👍🤘✨
He actually did a bangood boat a few years ago that was rc. He took it out and ran it. Very highly recommend you check it out !
Wow what a paint job
Back in the '60's this kit was molded in a Metallic Green, it was the second model I built when I was young. The Tarantula Dragster was my first build, oddly enough BOTH kits were molded in the Metallic Green, the Tarantula's green had more yellow in it though.
Another enticing review but having the Willys Gasser, I have to draw a line somewhere 😏 One thing I am looking for more and more is the tyres in the kit are either pre-painted or have the decals if shown on the box artwork. Most of the time they do. Cheers
Built this as a kid, I remember using alot of glue lol She was all Testors Gloss light blue. Awesome Build and Reveiw as always Chris! And I love the music!
"Three orange whips" Classic movie, The Blues Brothers.
Great job friend!
Yeah glad to see this one back, tried building it as a kid, omfg those doors! Hope to get the much better reissue
Nicely done
MAN SIR ,. YOU DO FINE MODELS , ❤ , "" GREAT JOB ,
NICE BUILD "" ❤ !!!
Thank you so much 😀
Great build
Keep the music 🎶 it fits your style
The Allstates had no trunk lids, plain interiors and I believe no rear seat. Cool little cars. The Vega was the Henry J of the 70's. LOL!
The Chevette Scooter even more.
Definitely music during the painting! Too bad u tube won't let you use something really cool classic rock
sweet little gasser! I have always wanted this kit and now its been re released !
Great donor car! I’ll have to get one. Nice update on this old kit.
Another awesome job a definite must have thanks for sharing 👍🇦🇺 and I do like the calming music
I ordered two of those and received them today. I've been wanting a Henry J gasser since I got back into model building. And, the no music option is just strange!
What can I say, just fantastic Chris, absolutely fantastic! 👍👍🎄🎁🎅🏻🤘
orange whip! john candy in the blues brothers.
That’s awesome Chris! Havnt done a gasser yet but after seeing yours I’m definitely going to invest in one. I love the music while you paint, always a relaxing tune going on and Thankyou for all your hard work filming and the amount of time you put in mate. Great appreciated ☺️👍
Awesome job as well, I'm working on this one as we speak
This is really kool
Thanks, that was a fun build for sure.
Our Florida Dragstrip Riot event, has a few of those, on hand to wow the crowd.
Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thanks, you too!
This one came together nicely, and TBH, I always find the music you use very relaxing. Got me through lockdown when I first discovered this channel last year and rekindled my interest in building model kits again.
I'm the kinda goof ball that would buy cars from this era and try to make a "close to stock looker". I think they had flat head 4 cyl. Take one from a Jeep. Close enough for my shelf.
Keep your great model builds coming!...I enjoy your site!
Great donor car! I’ll have to get one. Very nice update on this kit. Looks clean.
Reminds me back in High School one of us ran across a Henry J, we all chipped in and bought it. Cleaned up the body, got a Chevy engine running on the stand. Never got the suspension set up and not a good interior. No money, we let it go. Learned a lot about engines and body work though. Always wondered what it could have been. Thanks for a great video.
I like the builds you complete. I know this is going to sound funny but I really like the mellow music you picked. Really adds to the program. Thank-you. Sometimes I build a kit at the same time. A cool way to pass the time.
Glad you like them!
Very cool kit. I have got 2 of the original issue kits. Yes I enjoy the music, it is different and the music seems to fit the job at hand. Thanks for your great videos.
Hey Chris,I have finished AMT's GMC Astro 95 cabover a few months ago,I have yet to get the Fruehauf FB beaded panel dry van trailer or the Fruehauf exterior post van trailer for it;to use the trailer decals that came with the kit,to match the decals that are on the truck;and the truck is super detailed as well.
Nice! Looks like a great model Thank You
Got my two yesterday can't wait to build one of em great job Chris looks good buddy
Hobby Lobby is getting tons of kits in stock and they are 40% off! End of year heaven! I am stocking up for 2022! Great video, awesome content! Orange whips, john candy, blues brothers!
Like this one a lot - so cute. Thanks again.
Youa the master of modeling
Nice Work! Glad revell changed out the wheels on this particular issue.. Looks great!
great kit, same mold as the old "saints" Henry j gasser kit. worst part of whole kit is the front axle. it's just not beefy enough and will bow/warp with weight of vehicle assembled.
Another nice video and presentation! ! :) I built one as a kid years ago. I wish Revell would of updated the 427 engine a bit. Looks more like a 427 wedge motor. The 427 SOHC ( Single over head cam) looks completely different, from the front timing chain cover. The valve covers are not accurate, The real ones have 427 SOHC casted in the cover.
Any way, still a great kit and great build!! :):):) Happy Holidays to you!
Maybe Santa will bring me on!!
The engine is a let down in the kit, the real cammer is very wide, not really captured with the Revell motor, the MPC cammer in the Ohio George Mustang is a better depiction, i'm fitting a Revell 396 Hemi in my Henry J.
Sick!
enjoy yhr video, I want one because of your built
Gosh I love this thing! You did such a beautiful job.
Thank you so much!
Remember when I doing these back in the 60s a 57 ford custom and a 48 ford the best one was dodges Little Red Wagon always enjoy your videos looking for an Autocar tractor for oil field build.
