The Plymouth Road Runner is a mid-size car with a focus on performance built by Plymouth in the United States between 1968 and 1980. By 1968, some of the original muscle cars were moving away from their roots as relatively cheap, fast cars as they gained features and increased in price. Plymouth developed the Road Runner to market a lower-priced, basic trim model to its upscale GTX.
Plymouth paid $50,000 to Warner Bros.-Seven Arts to use the Road Runner name and likeness from their Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons (as well as a "beep, beep" horn, which Plymouth paid $10,000 to develop).[1] The Road Runner was based on the Chrysler B platform (the same as the Belvedere and Satellite), as a back-to-basics mid-size performance car.
The earliest of the 1968 models were available only as 2-door pillared coupes (with a B-pillar or "post" between the front and rear windows), but later in the model year, a 2-door "hardtop" model (sans pillar) was offered. The Road Runner of 1968-1970 was based on the Belvedere, while the GTX was based on the Sport Satellite, a car with higher-level trim and slight differences in the grilles and taillights.
The interior was spartan with a basic vinyl bench seat, lacking even carpets in early models, and few options were available - such as power steering and front disc brakes,[1] AM radio, air conditioning (except with the 426 Hemi) and automatic transmission. A floor-mounted shifter (for the four-speed) featured only a rubber boot and no console so that a bench seat could be used.
The standard engine was an exclusive "Roadrunner" 383 cu in (6.3 L) B-series V8 engine with a 4-barrel Carter Carburetor rated at 335 bhp (340 PS; 250 kW) at 5200 rpm and 425 lb⋅ft (576 N⋅m) at 3400 rpm of torque.[4] Its extra 5 hp (4 kW) rating was the result of using the radical cam from the 440 Super Commando and a .25 raise in compression to 10.5:1 (vs. 10.25:1 with the 330 hp (246 kW) 383). When air conditioning was ordered, the cars received the 330 hp (246 kW) version, as the radical cam specs of the 335 bhp (250 kW) version did not create enough vacuum to accommodate air conditioning. A $714 option was the 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi with 2X4 Carter AFB carburetors rated at 425 bhp (431 PS; 317 kW) at 5000 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft (664 N⋅m) at 4000 rpm of torque.[5]
The standard equipment transmission was a 4-speed manual transmission with floor shifter, and the three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission was optional. Early four-speed 1968 Road Runners featured Inland shifters, which were replaced by Hurst shifters during the course of the model year.
Plymouth expected to sell about 20,000 units in 1968; actual sales numbered around 45,000. This placed the Road Runner third in sales among muscle cars, with only the Pontiac GTO and Chevy's SS-396 Chevelle outselling it. Dodge debuted the Road Runner's cousin, the Super Bee, as a mid-1968 offering after seeing Plymouth's success with the Road Runner.

This is one of my favorite AMT kits. The chassis, with a little modification, can be put under a lot of older Mopar kits that are less detailed.

Agreed. The AMT body is horribly proportioned. But the chassis and running gear work nicely with the JoHan ‘69 body. I’ve built a few and they turn out awesome.

~beautifully done~I remember as a 14 year old kid when this kit came out I believe in 1968 I bought it and was not disappointed in building it~I did not have any paint at the time to make it look super-duper but it was fun in building it~I believe that it was an AMT kit not MPC but I do not remember but it had the tabs to align the tub and glass and the tabs and holes for the screws to hold the whole model together~I still see a few of those kind of models out there but the ones that do not have them are just as good~
~I bought all my models back then in Woolworths and a place called Two Guys~

BTW love Your Body color While not intended to Replicate a Factory Color it appears Close to Q5 Seafoam Turquoise for 68 1/2 and 69 Roadrunners which were My intended 2 Builds. i love a 68-70 plymouth gtx or road runner i got 2 68 plymouth gtx model cars one is painted blue like b5 blue and the other i painted yellow with a black top and black stripes along the bottom of the car and and i did the matt black that went on top the hood and fenders and i got a 70 plymouth road runner model car i got from a friend whos father passed it had two in one box their wasnt enough to build both but i finished one the details that had already been done was insane he had made break lines and gas lines under the car that looked real and some how he had painted the blower on it to look like real cast iron and he actually made a little spring for the carburetors i finished the cat by putting wheels on it and finishing the interior i decided to go a bit further and cover some parts of the interior like the seats with a soft cloth material thats sticks it made for models but i never understood how he painted the blower to look like cast iron or how he made the little spring for the carburetor i mean it looked like a 1:1 replica of the real thing i wish it had been finished because the wheels i had to glue on because he had clipped on the end pieces on the suspension for where the wheels snapped off not sure why but i wish i knew im guessing he was gonna make realistic looking breaks for the car or something but i can do that much detail myself i can only do the wires from the disrupter to the spark plugs but that guy even made a little distributor for the motor that looked like the wires were plugged into still better looks that something i could do

A note about the rear quarter windows of cars of this era: many of them were either fixed, or if they did roll down, they would always be at least partially visible. I want to say they were fixed on the Mopar B bodies. Glad that Round 2 is springing for the Roadrunner licensing on this latest release. Some "Belvidere" versions of this tool in the past were missing this important component of an iconic car and marketing triumph: a fun more affordable muscle car.

There's the '69 GTX by AMT. It's not a Road Runner per say, but as they are kinda "trim levels", I guess it count? I know you did the prostreet version of that GTX, but didn't you do a stock version of it as well? I think I recall you doing one?
That said, really awesome build. I still think that Round2 can up the game a little by making certain modifications with new tooling like making a grill that use transarent head light lenses (even tho your Modge Podge trick made it look as there were some lenses in there) and the finding a way to do similar with the taillights, which would just improve an already solid kit.

One issue. The frame rails on an unibody cars were always body color if under body was painted or black for undercoating.
Actually, what Mother Mopar did was dipped the car in primer then if body color got on the frame, it got on the frame. The dealership was the guys spray tar based undercoating on the car.

They don't come in a terribly large amount of colors but I think I will pick up a can or 2 next time I am at Hobby Lobby and try it. I am looking to achieve the look of the 60's era Hot Wheels cars on a few models where the color was transparent over the bare metal of the car. I loved that look.

I haven’t built a model of any kind in nearly 50 years and seeing your channel has made me remember how much I used to enjoy it. May I ask what kind of glue you are using? Back in the day the most prevalent choice was a tube of Testor’s which seemed to get everywhere and usually ended up gluing the pieces to your fingers rather than to each other. Your glue seems to be very liquid, you use it very sparingly and it seems to dry very fast.

    Great work man. She’s gorgeous.
    MOPAR or NO CAR!
It seems like every Dodge and Plymouth model kit comes with the Hemi, usually as the only option. There were only ~1000 Hemi Roadrunners, in 1968, out of ~45,000 built. The backstory you have created for your car makes sense, but I wish Revell, Round 2, etc, would add some realistic variety. By far the most common motor was the 383.
Anyway, nice job, I look forward to you next project!

I'm kinda sad to see they've changed nothing since this came out in the early 90s....
Some extra drag parts and slicks would have been a great addition
Options to build it as a 69 RR would have been cool
That's y I'm glad I have the original Jo Han one from 1969 mint in box
It is cool though they expanded the decals.

I'm thinking about getting into models as a hobby. I've watched several videos now and today I came across yours. I noticed that unlike other videos that you don't sand down your models. Can I ask why? Thank you!

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  Рік тому +2

Correct, I build them as-is for the review.
I may sand down a big issue or correct a short shot of plastic, etc. but for the most part I leave them as is.
I'm personally big into building from the box as-is and just enjoying the hobby in my way.
Others are welcome to spend as much time and energy accurizing, sanding, polishing to their hearts content if that's what they enjoy. I never cut others down or say they are doing things 'wrong'. You'll never get that negativity here.
      Thanks!

Just like to say how much l enjoy your channel, I've watched hours of hpiguys and learned a lot along the way. I can never catch the glue that you use, you always use it and it's brushed on, but l can never catch the brand. Would you be kind enough to mention the name of it.

Plastruct Bondene, modelroundup.com among others sell it.
All the modern liquid brush on glues work well, even the clear Testors liquid in the pink glass bottle works nicely.

For me, I'll look at Revell, Tamiya, Hasegawa etc

it's funny i started , well , got into it back in '09... i thought it actually would be nice if people woulld show collections, building processes or galleries / dioramas. And n now it's all there. i can imagine that in another ten years every second one got a online shop and the other half run such a channel or similar. it's insane who ever talks about clima issues, should picture that every year 40000 YEARS LONG of video-/clip material got uploaded to utube just. And I read that already a year or two ago. very paradoxal.

    @michaelbukowski3416 5 місяців тому

How do you get the body over the engine compartment? I tried test fitting it and it’s tight. Do you put the front end on first or put the back end of the body on first and then slide the body over the engine compartment? Also did you glue the body to the chassis and if so, where are the glue points you applied glue?
