The Mercury Cyclone is an automobile that was marketed by the Mercury division of Ford from 1964 to 1971. Introduced in 1964 as the Mercury Comet Cyclone, the Cyclone replaced the S-22 as the performance-oriented version of the Mercury Comet model line. The Cyclone became a distinct nameplate for the 1968 model year, as the Mercury Montego was phased in to replace the Comet.[1]
Within Mercury, the Cyclone was positioned between the Cougar pony car and the Marquis/Marauder full-size two-doors. Though largely overshadowed by the Cougar, the Cyclone was positioned as a muscle car, representing the Mercury brand in racing and was a clone of the Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt.
Four generations of the Cyclone were produced, with production ending after the 1971 model year. For the 1972 model year, the Cyclone returned as an option package for the Montego; only 30 examples were produced. Within the Mercury line, the Cyclone was not directly replaced. The Cougar XR7 was repackaged as a personal luxury version of the Montego for 1974.
The 1967 model was produced with several engine options. The standard engine was the 289 cu in (4,736 cc) V8 with 200 hp (149 kW). The GT's engine was 390 cu in (6,391 cc), but was quoted with 15 fewer horses at 320 hp (239 kW).
Neither the 1966 Cyclone nor the 1967 Cyclone used the 427 cu in (6,997 cc) Ford FE engine that went into the standard Comet officially from the factory. For Comet Cyclones that were modified by Andy Hotton of Dearborn Steel Tubing with the optional 427 Ford FE 410 hp (306 kW) engine there were no changes to the body work similar to the Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt. Only a small, chromed badge with the designation '427' located on each front fender reflected the larger displacement engine under the hood (bonnet).

I'm soo excited about this kit being reissued because it's 1 of my top 10 favorite model kits. I bought 2 of these kits online about 10 years ago and paid $9 each but now the prices are ridiculous, and yes I understand prices have gone up for all models. This kit is soo incredibly detailed, the fit and finish are top notch and you will be stunned that this is an AMT kit.😊

This looks like another one of the mid to late 90s Amt/ertl kits. They had lots of separate parts for the interior, engine and chassis. Might have to grab this one.

I know that Ford and Mercury had "duplicate" models into the 80s. My first car was an 82 Ford Fairmont, the Mercury equivalent was called the Zephyr. The most obvious cosmetic difference was the tail light lenses. On the Fairmont, the lenses had a vertical pattern, on the Zephyr, they were horizontal. Excellent build Chris.

Another fine memory flogger. By the late 1960's Ford and Mercury, shared bodies and engines. Colors, outside trims and interior differences were the tools that Ford/Mercury engineers used to satisfy the marketing and finance folks at FoMoCo for DIFFERENT cars. Years later when GM sold re-trimmed Chevys as Cadillacs, they were sued (by Johnny Carson among others). This is a fine example of Comet's re-badged Fairline. Chris your build is impressive. Your color choices are just right. Thanks for sharing.

Indeed, from '66 to '69 the Comet was based on the Fairlane. Previously, they were based on the Falcon. They didn't produce Comets in '70, but they returned in '71 up 'till 77, this time sharing their body with the Maverick.
I almost bought a '67 Comet Calliente 286 as my first car. It was my uncle's and it needed lots of TLC, so my folks discouraged me from buying it. I got to say, I regret it to this day. But then again, I wouldn't have been able to fix it back then.

Very nice build, Chris! Your paint looks great. 1:02:01 1:02:01 This kit is every bit as nice a kit as the AMT 1967 Ford Fairlane GT/GTA or the Fairlane 427 kit. When I built the Fairlane GT/GTA back in the late 1990s, I purchased an aftermarket front spindles kit, which lowered the stance. I believe the kit as designed sits a bit high in the front. I have a 1990s edition of the AMT 1967 Mercury Comet kit in my stash and I need to build, it now that I see yours!

Another great build Chris. I love the Mercury muscle cars myself; I have always loved the Mercury Cougar since I was a kid as I had the matchbox car of it and I always thought it was cool. I want to get this kit to compare it to the AMT Ford Fairlane GT/GTA Ertl version I have in my kit stash. The red does look good and the Tamiya dull red is a nice contrast to the body colour. Always enjoy the show and really appreciated the look at the Revell 71 Mustang, I had heard about it and now you have confirmed it. I have built the MPC version and have the last release of it from round 2 which they did improve. Any way you can never have too many Muscle Cars!!!! Looking forward to the next build. Stuart.

  • @johnjohnson1709
    @johnjohnson1709 Рік тому

You commented about how detailed the engine was, would you ever consider building the car as a curbside and displaying the engine outside the car as a kit of its own? It would be much easier to admire the detail work that you put into it that way.

You are correct Chris, the Commet/Cyclone is a rebadged Fairlane/Galaxie. Ford was doing exactly what GM was doing at the time, sharing underpinnings and chassis among divisions with division designers making their differences really only in badges and the front and rear clips.

I owned a 1967 Cyclone just like what you built. I bought it off of the Ford resale lot - it was in the Detroit Auto Show. I had to sell it because I got drafted (wish I hadn't). I don't have the skill you have to build one and I would like one as a memory keepsake so let me know if you ever wanted to sell the one you put together (assuming the price is something I can afford and justify).

    Nice car, nice kit.
Unfortunately, just one more example of Round2 reissuing a kit that is commonly available at a modest price, while they reserve their new tooling efforts for modern cars that will interest few modelers.
Apparently, the people in charge of their product development have a very different set of marketing data and objectives than long-time modelers do.
As always, of course, your craftsmanship is superb. Well done, again, Chris.

I don't for sure, but my old boss, had a 67 Fairlane, back ,1979, with 289, it was a transmission shop, if I had that carb off once I had it off 25 times, trying different things to get better gas mileage! Epoxy screen under carb, fuel lines inside heater hose vs for atomization, nothing really helped, it was a fairly small car with a tiny engine! It got pretty good mileage for the time, but that was the first time gas got over a 1. 00 a gallon!!

You always put a Holley carburetor on backwards. The vacuum dashpot is supposed to be on the passenger side when the float bowls are front to rear. If the instructions show otherwise then they are wrong. Always liked the early Cyclones, sister car to Fords' Fairlane body/chassis.
