    They also have quite a few "Other" songs that are completely different and undefined, and all in different ways: Lemon, Wire, Raised By Wolves, 40, Zooropa, Acrobat, Unknown Caller, Wake Up Dead Man, Fez/Being Born, Troubles, Please, Moment of Surrender, Miss Sarajevo, Red Flag Day, Numb, Wanderer, Shadows and Tall Trees, If You Wear That Velvet Dress, Exit

      They have entire albums that are completely different from the sampling of songs Anton has heard. Some of those would be a real trio for him. I always forget about Numb with Edge singing the lead. The video is awesome too. I read the feet in his face are Morleigh's :D

      All I Want Is You is such a gorgeous song by them, and a rare case where the lyrics are 100% about one thing, and it's the love for Ali. He dedicated it to her on at least some of the concerts on the Elevation tour. The transition between it and Where The Streets Have No Name on that tour is beautiful.
      The lyrics to Streets are pretty cool too. It's about how where the name of the street one lives on reflects their religion and their income in Ireland, especially In Belfast in Northern Ireland.

    I’d forgotten about this song. I always claim to only like early U2 stuff 🙄 but then I get reminders that they made some pretty good stuff after Rattle & Hum too.
    Vertigo is an absolute cracker too, great video as well.

    One Tree Hill, God PT2, Discotheque, Running To Stand Still, Exit, Every Breaking Wave, Ordinary Love, Hawkmoon 269, The Saints Are Coming (w/Green Day live reopening of the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina), All I Want Is You/Streets Have No Name live Slane Castle, Kite, I realize you won't react to all these, still do yourself a favor and listen/watch each song/video. Your appreciation for U2 will only grow stronger. When you are done with this list, let me know and I'll make you another. U2 has sooooo many great songs. PS. They were honored over the weekend by the Kennedy Center. CBS will air the ceremony Dec. 28 I think it is.

      Those are all great songs! Personally, I think he would enjoy immersing himself into one album at a time mainly because U2 are best experienced that way and he's heard a good sampling of songs. If he does it by album it will be a more cohesive experience. That's so cool about their award :)

    Every their album is slightly different. I am their fan since I know them (1986) and that was strage to wacht them from The Boy & War - which are raw - to Ruttle and Hum which is live to Joshua Tree which was complete bomb to Achtung Baby (mad in Germany), Zoo TV and Pop - which took disco and pop to more soul and melancholy afterwards... I love prefer Stay - Faraway So Long (beautiful balad from Achtung Baby) and Red Hill Mining Town (Joshua Tree). But Pride or Discoteque, Mysterious Ways and many others are great. They have no weak song.

  • @lauraallen55
    @lauraallen55 Рік тому

    They only had a plane in two videos that I know of lol! These are both from the same album (Beautiful Day and this one).
    What you're saying about them having so much in between fast and slow tempo and so much in the middle bleeds together is because they played music that hit in different genres, was a blend of different genres.
    You mentioned the song from Achtung Baby: Mysterious Ways, well, One and Love Is Blindness are from that album too. That was the first time they reinvented themselves, so that album has their punk influence (that you hear oftentimes in Larry's drums and Adam's bass playing), funk, industrial rock, techno, alt and so on. They took a lot of genres and kinda mixed them together essentially, and came up with a very unique sound.
    As for mainstream or not - yes, they knew how to do radio-friendly, but it was always still unique because of their blending of styles and genres. When they hit worldwide acclaim with Joshua Tree (I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and With Or Without You) Bono said they weren't ready musically for the success, Larry said they were biggest but not best.
    Their work with BB King on Rattle and Hum and their experience with folk music helped lyrically and in influencing the music on that album. Blend all the influences together with what they already were influenced by and having the band almost split up gave them their Rumors-type album. Achtung Baby had so much variation in style and genre plus it was dark and moody. There were 5 singles from that album and all successful.
    I honestly couldn't tell you (outside of One) which were the singles on the album without looking it up - the entire album is like Fleetwood Mac's Rumors - all worthy of being singles. You've heard a dozen singles and one non-single (Love Is Blindness was not a single). I've wanted you to hear some of their deep cuts for so long now because they are as good and sometimes even better than the real thing (the singles). LOL! Sorry, that's another song from the album.
    I wrote all that in the middle of you talking, and now listened again and you hit on what I explained about how the mixed and blended so many different things to get a unique sound. Most bands do not like to go outside their boundaries of comfort and U2 was always looking at how they could do that. You've only skimmed the surface of what they did too. :) When Love Comes To Town (Desire and Angel Of Harlem too) is the funkiest R&B song and just not like anything you've heard them do. Those songs came from their sessions with BB King.
    You asked about keyboards. Bono actually wrote One on the piano. Edge plays as well. There is piano in a lot of their songs. Oh New Year's Day! There is a very nice live one of that where Edge is sitting at the piano and holding his guitar on his lap and switching very seamlessly I might add back and forth between them in the song. That's a must-see, must-hear for you. The other must-hear song for you of theirs is Sunday Bloody Sunday. The drum beat is what starts the song. It's almost a military sound. If you asked anyone what's most memorable about the song, it's that drum beat. I saw them in concert as I've mentioned and they did Bloody Sunday, and even though all eyes are always pretty much on Bono, I don't remember a thing about that song in the concert as I couldn't take my eyes off Larry the entire song.
    I like that - groovingly! :D It is instinctual like you said. Larry's been playing since he was about 12 so he's got it down and is quite a machine. He needs surgery soon on either elbows or knees too, sadly.
    About the sunglasses: They actually rarely wear them, you just have happened to see a few videos where they do. Bono does wear them all the time though - he wears tinted shades all the time because he's had glaucoma since at least his early 30s.
    One thing I might add is that they early one were lucky to get an amazing person to produce their first two albums. Going forward, they managed to snag Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois to produce them and the band learned a ton from them I'm sure. The tech used to incorporate the band members into scenes from the Lara Croft Tomb Raider movie was pretty cool I thought.
    I love how you're really getting a feel for who they are and were. It makes me happy. :)
    And since I have to do it: It's Awk-toong Baby or you could just say Attention Baby ;)

    Oh, since you mentioned it I checked and found a website listing their songs by beats per minute and they have 70 songs with more BPM than Elevation. Elevation is just 110 BPM (though it seems like more) while With Or Without You is almost identical in BPM to Elevation o_o. They have songs as fast as 185 BPM (18 songs total over 150 BPM. They have10 songs slower tempo than One. One is 92 and their slowest is 68. I think some B-sides have been left off because I know of a few I didn't see on the list.
    That all illustrates very well your point that they play at every point from one end of the range to the other, and is something I never thought about. But, you're right, I would say that most artists keep their tempos pretty static (or do fast and slow, but stay away from all the middle stuff especially when talking about metal or hard rock; however, when talking about other genres they stay fairly in the middle most of the time).
    Oh man, Mysterious Ways is almost the same exact tempo as One. 92 versus 94. Elevation seems way faster and One seems way slower tempo-wise than does MW. They have an unusual way of making some of their songs seem faster or slower tempo than they are. Adam and Larry are a cracking rhythm duo. Interesting topic!

      Good options for heavy songs of theirs. Bullet is definitely one I'd love for him to hear. There are even more heavy songs - Exit, The Fly, Mofo, Acrobat, Like A Song, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me are all pretty heavy. Like A Song may be the heaviest with Adam keeping it all anchored to the ground while the rest are really getting it all out.

      Yeah, lyrically this is nowhere near their abilities lol! There are a couple clever things here, same with Vertigo. Both of them about being in a club lol! I think Ultraviolet (Light My Way) from Achtung Baby could be a reference to having been in a club too. The lyrics could get really cryptic with them.
      Elevation tour was the one and only time I saw them and it was 🔥

    • @MBeano
      @MBeano Рік тому +4

      I disagree on the lyrics. Everything should serve the song. This is a fun high energy song. It has the punch off of punk song, but the melody and groove of pop. The music is uplifting and playful. The lyrics should sere this, and they do. Here, it is more about sound, feel and emotion. Not overthinking. I've always considered this song to be their version of a Ramones type song - punchy, high energy, simple, playful, cheeky, catchy, chantable, and pogo-inducing. Not every song needs to be so serious or even deeply thought provoking - they have more than enough of those. I would be concerned if there were too many "Elevation"s, but at most, less than 1 per album

      Those aren't even the right lyrics!! It's:
      "a mole digging in a hole,
      digging up my soul,
      going down, excavation" get it right! 🤪😆
      I love those lyrics they're just really silly, fun and catchy and just don't really mean anything in particular - who cares?! Except I quite like the idea of a mole doing such serious excavation work🤷🏼‍♀️🤭 I always think the next line is "ionise" but apparently it's "I and I in the sky" is that really what he sings 🤷🏼‍♀️ If the lyrics were more deep and meaningful the song would be less fun!

      This was the result of a poll so others voted it in, and as he says he likes the studio first. He doesn't do requests based on YT comments. Some reactors might do that, I don't know. Have you requested Until The End Of The World before by chance? If so, he will probably hear it soon. We can both hope he checks out more live versions after having seen Bad and Love Is Blindness live. I can't agree more, and many, many commenters have recommended their live versions, so it seems it should be very clear to him by now that live is where it's at with this band. Any time I put on U2 to listen to but not watch, it's always live concerts/performances. I never listen to studio except for the 90s albums sometimes in the car because I have a car old enough to have a CD player. :D
