    That special vibe you mention is something U2 only has. You can listen to their music and it takes you to a different place. The human emotions you get from listening to u2 is something special. As Bono always says “ the goal is soul “
    This song was a big song for the band and America after 9/11 it became americas anthem. The album all that you can’t leave behind came out in 2000 before 9/11 but it for whatever reason is written as if 9/11 has already happened. Such a huge album for them and it was huge in America because the nation was grieving. Music especially U2’s music is ridiculously powerful.
    You have to react to every breaking wave live from the EMA’s 2014
    Great review , always enjoy your u2 reviews

    I also loved your review at the end. You are so right. Nowadays, especially in politics, people distance themselves more and more, even so much more could be done if they would work together. At the vertigo tour Bono gave a speech about the “One-campaign “, which fight against extreme poverty. Bono said that there is no reason, that anyone in this world is hungry. His speech was so inspiring for me and many more. He said that even so you don’t have money you can share, everyone can do something to make this world a better place, if you just open your eyes and pay attention what’s going on around you. I’m very absorbing about my surroundings. Sometimes just a smile or friendly word can mean the world to a stranger. Bono’s speech inspired me to cut hair for the homeless, that I’m doing since 2014 in my community. It’s so rewarding the change in peoples faces afterwards. Not even because of the haircuts, but about the attention they got and conversations we have during the haircuts. It’s so rewarding and I feel very humble to be able to give a little part to the ones who are less fortunate. Don’t ever judge, every single person has a story to tell

    The drummer's name is Larry and he actually founded the band with a notice at school to start a band. He's the youngest having been just 17 when their first album was released (the others being 18 lol). One of the reasons they're all so good is that- that they're like family..
    One of the reasons I have such a problem with what song to request each time is I that I want you to see the heart of what they're about, and it's really hard when their catalog of really good song is so huge. The other thing that makes it hard is that as good as their studio versions and videos are, their live performances blow these out of the water. I know everyone keeps saying to listen to this and that live in the comments, and, although I already have in mind what to request (for a really long time to come lol) I'm always going 'oh yeah, got to have that one too'.
    You're so right that Bono has got a very special magnetism about him, very much so. But, there is a version of Love is Blindness- a solo by Edge that is just beautiful. Surprisingly, he has a similar tone to Bono's. Funny enough, when they showed up as 15 year olds to Larry's kitchen none of them wanted to sing, but when Bono opened his mouth it was all over (according to Edge). Larry is a very precise, and very good drummer as noted, and Adam is an excellent bassist. Edge is very creative, and uses a thick plectrum with dimples upside down to get his chimey, lightly distorted sound (as well as pedals I'm sure). But overall, it is Bono that just has something about him. You've picked up on that from the beginning. Some of that special quality may just be his genuineness about needing a connection to the rest of the world, a human connection to community. In concert he makes it feel small and intimate even with 80,000 people like at Live Aid.
    Very insightful point about how Edge's sound and Bono's mesh so perfectly with one another. They all know each other so well - and did by the time Live Aid came along - already together since 14-15 years old and getting a record after 4 years together.
    Another insightful point you make- that they use their money to make their vision for their videos. You should see their stage setups some day! They've always tried to have those designed with walkways and scaffolding and so on to make the audience feel more a part of what's happening with them, to bring them in. Bono has said from before they made it big that he never liked performers who stay distant, but likes them to get up close and personal with the audience. And, that's what he's always done. He gets up close and kneels down to people and has been known to just fall backwards into the crowd and still singing the whole time as they hold him up.
    I chose this version because of what happened with the original dedication to the woman and how they updated it. It was for her. The situation over there is complicated and I'm afraid we don't know the whole story. I thought it better to go with this version about 'walking on' from domestic violence.
    Your comments about change needing to come on a social level - interesting because the band always felt that and from early on were influenced by bands who did the same - incorporating that into their music. U2 has always felt it important to incorporate a lot of social ideals as well as political issues, or world issues into their music.
    What it means in the beginning: the only baggage you can bring is all that you can't leave behind. They've said it's love is all that you can bring. The outro part that you really like (I do too) is even longer on the record, and lists everything people build or make, fashion or break, and on and on - all this you can leave behind, but not love. 'Home, I don't know where it is, but I know I'm going home. That's where the hurt is'. He's got a way with words. His voice is not pitch perfect, but it's got something about it that many find extremely pleasant.
    Regarding all of us making changes rather than one hero, the One campaign is what that's about for ending extreme poverty. They started it 18 years ago. Bono has sought to and met with all kinds or world leaders about it, and about ending the debt in Africa. He is/they are quite the activist and humanitarian. All of us adding our voices to it. On the site it says something like 'we don't want your money if you don't have it to give, but we want your voices, everyone has a voice'.
    Okay, my thoughts on this one - still haven't shown you hardly any of my favorites LOL! Like you, love the bridge, outro, chorus but not my favorite melody. Of those I've requested or that you've seen, Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own, Mysterious Ways, Vertigo and One are amongst my favorites. I've been requesting some of their big songs, but what I think are their best are mostly going to be live versions still to come.

      Yeah Bono said the band is like a 4 legged table if u took one leg away it would collapse ..that's how important each other are to each other and I think all their income is divided 4 ways no matter who wrote songs etc. Somthing that destroyed other bands ie like Queen or Take That..they are just 2 I can think off but yeah they are all childhood friends..They actually well Bono and Larry lived within a mile from me..Larey still does but Bono is on the other side of the city now..But they seem all good guys...🙏🏻✌🏻🙏🏻

    Bono has the charisma, the voice. But the edge made the U2 sound. You know a song is a U2 song because of the Edge's guitar. And everything goes so smoothly because of the absolute link between Larry and Adam, they make the frame of every song.

    • @lauraallen55
      @lauraallen55 Рік тому +3

      Good points, really. Each one of them make the whole what it is in some important way. Adam and Larry are nothing short of a stellar rhythm section that anchors everything Edge and Bono do. Edge leads it and Bono has the charisma and nuance of emotions. I think Bono and Edge fit with one another so well. A unique group of people and talents. Knowing each other since they were literally children has something to do with it, but the raw talent has to be there of course.

    One of my many favorite songs. I can see that you totally get them. They capture your mind with their lyrics and the music is just hunting. What is also absolutely amazing, what you might don’t know, their fan community is also something very special. I made so many friends all around the world, we meet up at concerts, create events for meetups and we are “ONE “
    When I go to a u2 concert I always feel home. Even if I would go alone, it’s like you’re meeting up with family. U2 inspired so many to do good things in the world. They’re just so very special for me, my medicine for the soul ❤

      I've read about and know some people who had similar things happen - this song/album having a profound effect on their lives. Beautiful Day is so uplifting, Kite is so profoundly sad, this one is hopeful, and so many other songs on the album have some deep and profound effects. It's like Anton said - they are special in the effects they have on people without seeming to try. I don't think that's what they're trying per se, but it's more that they have genuine feelings of love and desire for connection with fellow humans.

    Very, very, very well said. I really think you hit what makes U2 so great and special right on the head. Great commentary in this video because this is why U2 as great as they are and the number of fans they have , can also be so easily dismissed. What they do greatly is not heard on the surface. Once digested properly one can begin to recognize that there is only one band in history like U2. They are very special.

    • @lauraallen55
      @lauraallen55 Рік тому +1

      You mentioned something that's important about appreciating this band in that what they do greatly is not immediately noticeable there on the surface. You have to really listen to them, like whole albums or concerts. Once you do that even just once, it kind of all becomes clear. I think it's because they're so nuanced in much of what they do, every one of them. I mean we see the flamboyance of Bono for example, but the little things he does with his voice, expression, ad libs and so on are really only truly appreciated for all they are when you submerge into their music.
      Anton said it may just be Bono, and that it would be interesting to hear them without him. I've seen a solo by Edge and solos by Bono and they're magical. I saw one solo of Larry singing and it was incredible too. I haven't heard Adam sing solo, but it's kind of amazing that three of them have voices along with their other talents. He's right too that they're very meticulous with every single detail of what they do.

    As THE WAR started Bono & The Edge released an emotional acustic version of this deep song on internet dedicated to all people in Ukraine. Later both did a concert in a subway station in Kyiv, also on internet.
    For me the brilliant not to be underestimated drums+bass give the driving rhythmic plattform for Bono and The Edge, if Mr. David Howell Evans wants to play guitar at all (very very cynical allusion to the last few years, especially to the last radio "songly" album).

    • @lauraallen55
      @lauraallen55 Рік тому +1

      I watched that performance by Bono and Edge in the subway recently for the people of Ukraine. Brilliant as always and to be expected. A resounding yes, to Larry and Adam (drums and bass) being the driving rhythmic platform or backbone for guitarist and vocalist here. They don't ever get enough credit or recognition. These guys are four very talented and skilled people who happened to stumble upon one another as children, and now formed a lifetime bond as bandmates and still think of one another as family.

    Great job dhearthair 🇮🇪🤝🇺🇸 my uncle was a man called John Hume, he was our MLK, if you could try the live version of U2's 'Please', MTV version or Rotterdam are incredible, it was written with John in mind, John being the Edge's hero, I've met Bono, the Edge, Larry through John, never met Adam except once backstage but it was just a 'hello', uncle John (actually my father's uncle my great uncle, God rest him but he was just Uncle John to us), it would mean a while lot, thanks a million, God bless ye. Edit - Mofo is a mental U2 song, try the studio version, U2 were very brave musically in the 90's, btw I could send you one of Edge's beanies or a pair of Bonos sunglasses, I have four, one Bulgari pair from about 2009, got the Popmart shades (I'm keeping them though because I love them), the big Fly shades and the round ones from 2015, I think that's when I got them, I was like 14 when I met them in 1997, I text Edge up and down the days, he's that much of a cool bloke and he never forgets anything, my 30th birthday a while back I was in the house and a courier turned up with two massive boxes, Edge got me a bespoke left handed (I'm a southpaw lol) Gibson explorer, which is on the wall in the man cave my wife allowed me, a Vox echo amp and effects board, I know of course people on YT will be people on YT and say I'm writing bollix but it's the truth, I've even heard two of their new songs, I hope they continue with this sound because Edge knows (everyone calls him the Edge btw) I loved their Pop album more than any other thing they've done, Edge can shred a guitar he just chooses not to, zero ego on a superstar, Bono I've spoken to a good few times and he a cool wee bloke, they are all really really funny, like side splittingly funny, the amount of times Edge has me me crack up is countless, he paid for me to get private mental health help, I never ask him for anything quite the opposite, although I did ask for a beanie and Bono's sunglasses tbf but I offered to pay , I don't have his kind of money but I did give the Edge a bottle of Tyconnell whiskey that had 'John Hume Nobel Peace prize winner 1998' that John gave me a long time ago for his birthday, he drove from Dublin to my house to thank me, we went out 'just for a few pints' up the Strand bar here, we were out until 10.30am next day, went looking for a greasy spoon to get a sandwich 🥪 🤣 no joke, Edge turned around to me and said as it dawned on him "it's ********** Sunday" so none were even open, that night we were on Karaokes the lot, Edge can sing, I can't ngl, 'Sweet Caroline' and he even did a Wolfe Tones song i never in a million years thought he would, when in Rome I suppose, he had the ENTIRE bar singing, he stayed at ours until the Monday morning, last time I've seen him in person actually, Morleigh his missus and my wife were going mental as they though something happened to us, one of the best nights ever, if any of you ever meet him call him 'Dave'....he..erm...loves that 🤣 i will pass on your compliment about his guitar playing, he knows he gets bad mouthed by not going mad on the guitar but he's so zen he doesn't really care, anyway, that went on longer than I expected so I'll leave it now, believe it or not I don't mind, I don't know any of you but I wish you all the best regardless, if not for Uncle John I'd not have met him, he's my wee ones Godfather, no better man, every birthday, every Christmas that man always calls or texts, I think he prefers texting because he once said and I quote "do you ever shut up? Bono is like a silent monk compared to you Bill" 🤣🤣🤣 he's not wrong.

      Wow, Bill, that is all so amazing! 'm like the biggest U2 fan in the place, and can't lie about how jealous I am. I'm the one who is requesting Anton to cover all of the U2 songs. I joined his rock patreon just to do so every month.
      Edge/Dave is so unbelievable as a guitarist, I know that! He is undercut regularly by people for using 'tricks' on the guitar to get his sound. Well, what of it - no one else thought of it, did they? No one else thought of using a dimpled 1.1 mm pick turned around the other way to get a chime-y sound on their strings did they? :D
      From everything I've read about - all four of the guys tells me they are all pretty awesome humans. It must be such an honor to know them, or at least have met them. I'd give my eye teeth to meet even one of them lol!
      Loved your story and anecdotes. That night out with Edge is one for the books, and your wives worrying - that's a time you'll not ever forget!
      I've got Live Aid Bad next up for Anton. After that, there are so so many more I want to get to. I also love Pop and know a lot of their fans don't. My personal favorite is another album from the 90s: Achtung Baby. Everyone cites Joshua Tree as their masterpiece (and it is) but I am astounded by what they did in the 90s, not just Pop and AB, but the ZooTV tour was insane! Two of my favorites of the Edge is his solo of Van Diemen's Land and Love Is Blindness from Zoo - that second one is absolute 🔥
      I can't talk enough about this band. Again, so cool that you've met them all and are close to the Edge!
      If Anton doesn't want a beanie or a pair of shades I'll gladly take one of them in his place! 😍

      Bill, I forgot to say that Anton is in Canada (I'm in the US though). I have a. lot of Irish heritage on all sides of my family and would love to go there someday before I die.
      Anton, if you see this, Bill addressed you as deartháir and it means 'brother' :)
      Again, it was awesome reading your story. Thanks so much for sharing! :)

    If you want to see a very thematic song for U2, try “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” (US Version)

    Would love to see you react to Every Breaking Wave (acoustic version or a live version that is only Bono and Edge on piano!!) and also react to Acrobat!!!

    There are video's of U2 on UA-cam with Chris Martin (Coldplay), Bruce Springsteen, Eddy Vedder.. instead of Bono. But it's doesnt like it's supposed too. I'm a huge fan of Pearl Jam too and Coldplay, but still.. Bono is awesome. He writes his own lyrics and you can hear it. He means what he sings, lots of emotion and passion in his song when he sings his lyrics.

    Hahaha! We always hear it...'The Edge is such an underrated guitarist'. But he's NOT, it's just that he's not over-rated. Think about it. One of the most loved bands in the world, and most of the people that love U2 love The Edge; He's rated just about right. One of my favorite concert memories was looking over to my wife, just vibing to a song with her eyes closed. I asked her about her experience, and she said...That's how the Edge was vibing; I wanted to feel the same. My wife's a genius.
