My grandfather could only have conversations with people if he went on a walk with them. He rarely made eye contact with anyone. He taught me how to calm down by counting trees. My great uncle did the same thing. At family reunions we quite often spent a lot of time together counting fish in the pond. I count anything when I’m in shutdown. Sometimes I go to the restroom and count floor tiles. Piano is cool because it requires counting.

There NEEDS to be a video about haranging a person in shutdown, in their face DEMANDING communication, berating them, calling them names, attacking their ASD, abusing them of " using" their ASD to hide their "cowardice"

@alishaoverbay There is nothing wrong with you. I'm glad I could make you feel less alone. I've been taking really good care of myself, working out, yoga, bedtime and wake up routine, and walking my dogs every day no matter how I feel so I get out in nature. It's not always easy, but that on top of stimming and Journaling, while also working to drop my mask is honestly helping so much. It's a lot I know, but it's mostly little things that don't take much time. My favorite is the bedtime routine, it tells my brain to slow down so I can relax and actually sleep

I often carry a "worry stone" (a polished, very smooth rock) in my pocket. When I start getting those symptoms, or those of anxiety, I will take it out and rub the stone, focusing my concentration on the repetitive motion, how smooth the surface is against my thumb/fingers, etc. and that often seems to help me!

Usually I love having my cats near me and on me. Usually I love their biscuit making. But sometimes I can't handle having anyone near me and definitely not touching me. I just need to be left alone at those times. And I get really cranky if I'm not. I never realized that these are autism shutdowns. I guess they are.

Well, I just realised I used to have a shutdown every day after coming home from school. I used to count too and I find it really calming and entertaining. My dad was actually the one who introduced me to it (he had Asperger’s too, like me) and he told me one day in the car when I was really bored to count to a million. After that, I used to do it every time I was alone at school and it really helped. Also, thank you Dan, for making these videos. They have really helped me learn about myself and the things that I’ve always done but never knew why, since I was only recently diagnosed. So thanks.

I was diagnosed last year at the age of 40 after spending my whole life just thinking I was weird. I am just learning more about shutdowns. This is making so much sense and explaining so many things for me. I also have experienced depression at several points in my life so I mostly thought it was a case of good days/bad days etc. As a child if I felt overwhelmed I would retreat into myself. The best way I can describe it is like being a turtle hiding in its shell. It literally felt like my person shrunk inside my body and my body became just a shell to protect me. I would sort of run on autopilot if there was anything I was supposed to be doing but I wouldn't communicate or react to anything emotionally because I was hiding inside my shell. All of this is helping me to understand so many things and times in my life. Sometimes I just want to shut the curtains, shut out the entire world and pretend it doesn't exist for a while.

Really fabulous explanation and coping mechanism. I never thought about counting. I often shut down if someone is yelling or demanding some kind of response from me. It makes me lose concentration and break eye contact. Focusing on breathing or going on autopilot and considering the other person's feelings rather then their words has also (somewhat, atleast on the surface haha) helped the situation in the past for me.

I also really like ordering stuff, like making playlists and sorting pencils and pens in rainbow order. Playing games with lots of fetch quests and stuff are good to because they’re easy to understand and are often repetitive. Also, if you can, hang out with animals. Animals won’t ask question but they’re still a living thing your sharing the problem with and if they’re the kind you can stroke they’ll also fulfil the repetitive motion thing.

I had plenty of shutdowns in my day. I kind of still do.
First one *sometimes* works. I tend to get ghosted a lot though.
Second one I tend to do a bit differently than yours. It’s more of me trying to put puzzle pieces together trying to determine what someone else is saying. (Not that that excuses neurotypicals to use the puzzle piece as our symbol because it’s not)
The third one is new to me. I usually have to try and squeeze my head instead of my hand. And even that doesn’t always work.
    Thanks for the video Dan.

I'm glad to know someone who counts. I count everything, I also make lists of how many raspberries I harvest,.. Or anything. I have to count the steps since I was little, when I go upstairs or down stairs. If I really feel desperately bad, I count books, then how many pages, then the sentences on a page, then the letters on a sentence. I wrote them and make math to know the amount of letters in a pile of books, and I reagent them. It really soothes me. How many minutes or seconds before January for example . If I'm outside I count how many people are talking on the phone while riding, or tiles in a house... Sometimes I get very excited to know that book has x letters and I want to tell everybody. I don't know why people doesn't find that magic and beautiful.

Sorry for the book but I kind of word vomited here. I'm recently discovering that I fit a lot of the criteria for Aspergers and it's been sort of an epiphany of what the hell was going on my first 31 years of life. I always got the suck it up treatment which pretty much meant torture and depression and extreme anxiety because no one understood. I have become very good at coping and masking which are detrimental to my depression, especially in social situations I've been peer pressured into. I'm very good at mimicking. Voices, accents, other languages, songs on my guitar, hand writing, you name it. So now that I'm being vocal about what I'm figuring out about myself, my family and more Importantly my wife don't understand and say that I'm not on the spectrum, which is kind of soul crushing honestly. I say more importantly my wife because her brother is on the spectrum. A different amalgamation of the spectrum than I believe I am but I digress. So because I don't match him, I'm some how not on the spectrum. Can you do a video covering something like this? There has to be adults in somewhat similar situations and your videos on the different media platforms help quite a bit. Thank You.

Hi Dan. Love all your videos and I share them often with friends and on facebook. Soooooo..... what if you have counting OCD? And you are trying to use ERP to overcome the ritual of counting? Do you think this is a good recommendation for someone believed to be on the spectrum with counting OCD being one of their comorbidities, who is trying to use Exposure and Ritual Prevention to help their OCD? Love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance. And God bless you for all that you do to raise awareness for kids and adults on the spectrum. Much love. 🙏💕
