I'm not fussy about my food touching but I do tend to eat food by concentrating on each item - eat all the meat, then eat all the peas, then eat all the carrots.
Same... I'll even dissect a pie and eat the filling then the pastry or pick stuff out of a chicken korma to eat that first the the chicken then rice... it's also called organised eating
the "difficulty socializing" I find is more a difficulty in socializing... with neurotypical people. I find it amazing how those difficulties start to go away when interacting with other autistic people, because we understand each other
I've decided that this is the year of me learning to be myself, to be comfortable with myself. Your vids help to let me know that some of my behaviours are acceptable and that I should feel less guilt. Thank you for that. Take care xx
Okie... 1) the whole same routine, seats and the like is so me 2) I may become too fixated on a certain series over other things, like videogame series 3) my parents tell me that I'm a picky eater and my mom noticed some weird things I do with food ( like I won't eat cheese unless it's mixed with something else like pizza ) 4) Conversation is my worst. Unless it's asking how someone is doing or talking about mutual interests, I'm at a complete loss over what to say 5) I had two meltdowns in my life: one two weeks after moving houses and another after my mom got into a physical argument and threw something ( I ended up fleeing and sobbing in my room ) ...And that's enough life sharing from the looks of it
2 meltdowns I cannot even imagine. I broke at 33 and have more meltdowns as an adult than I did as a child. It sucks. But I'm improving on it again. Thank God.
I was diagnosed with autism a adhd when I was 32 then found you chanel you helped me understand my diagnosis slowly leaning why I do things differently
I've gotten so good at managing the meltdowns since my teenage years. And i've "learned" social stuff to the point most people consider me a massive extrovert, but it's performative. Crowds and social interactions tire me out, but I've learned to make a good show of it. As for the others, I use the same glass for every drink i have. It's the one mug and when it breaks I buy a near identical one to replace it. I even took it to the office with me. There are so many elements of routine and habit in my life. But oddly enough, my routine focus is very productive. As i'm now doing you tube and being a Dad full time, it lets helps me get the work done. Food. Raw onions is me too, and lots of it is texture stuff. I joke about my food habits being that of a 12 year old. But i sometimes look at the kids menu at restaurants with envy. It can be a problem when we go to peoples houses for dinner and they cook a meal i can barely touch. That always makes me feel awkward. Obsessive knowledge. I'm literally a professional board gamer now. I loved board games as a kid, and yeah, 35 years of knowledge on that. My channel is just me venting that knowledge directly at people. I'm quite a bit older than you, so when i was a kid they thought i was "hyperactive", but i tested negative for that. So they called me "gifted", which came with a whole bunch of weird baggage. They could never get why i was super good at some things and terrible at others. And it was all about what i found interesting. If i added a skill to my sphere of interest, i got very good at it. But many many things i just didnt care for and would ignore. Drove teachers up the wall. I'm so glad we have more language and frames of reference for the kids coming up now. Hopefully it makes them feel less like "an alien", which i sometimes felt like at school. It's weird being the only one in a room who thinks one way. Thanks for making this vid.
Dan, you were instrumental in helping me get a diagnosis this year. Thank you so much! I feel so much more at ease with myself now. Keep up the great work!
First suspected I had Asperger’s when I heard about it ≈ 20 years ago, but I wasn’t stereotypical enough (I’m female) so I mostly forgot about it and accepted I “had traits”. It wasn’t until after my son was suspected of having autism, I learned about the female phenotype and then realized why my dad always tells about his latest coin acquisition and not noticing if people don’t care. A hobby he shared with his own dad.
Your experience is almost identical to mine! I was concidered odd I think but I never understood why until my son got diagnosed. Then everything became more clear when I read about the diagnose and my stepmother said it was true for my father as well. Thanks for sharing.
My daily routine for those who care..... 5 am wake up take a bath and drink my coffee till 6 eat a yogurt and banana get my cat water wake my daughter up at 6:30. Feed my cat, stare into space for 12 minutes smoke pack our lunches. Start the car 7:20 get work ready and leave at 7:38. Drop my daughter off at school arive at work 7:50 smoke start work. Morning prep finished by 11:15. Eat said lunch, deal with lunch rush. 16 min two cig smoke break 12:45. Finish the rest of my work day int the exact same order I always do. Clock out 4:00. Arrive home 4:11 finish any lunch remaining sit till 5. Wash dishes do a load of laundry concurrently. Take daughter to practice or cook dinner while wife does. Dinner has one carb one protein two vegetables. Only beverages consumed through day is constant coffee and water. After dinner write 1 page front and back of an ancient text. Started that 4 years ago now and I am over 2200 pages deep at this point. Watch something or play something with my daughter put her to bed by 10 spend 2 hours with my spouse asleep by 12:05. Daily I am soo easy to assinate lmfao.
The most of people talk about their daily routines so I cant keep a dialogue. 1-my daily routine or "lifestyle" is waaaay different of theirs. 2-I dont watch tv to talk about the news (tv is disgusting). 3- I am not interested in other people's life so I cannot gossip either. My food habits are eccentric. The only thing I avoid is the alphabet soup. I start to play and the soup gets cold.
@@50toinfinityatleast no, not the same! TV is a noise maker that pollutes the room, robbing my head of peaceful thoughts and concentration. It’s also flashing lights, and just plain annoying. UA-cam for me is earphones and listening/watching exactly what , who and when I choose. I also sometimes I just read the dialogue instead of listen.
@@50toinfinityatleast not the same. The comment below explains it perfectly. I feel uncomfortable watching tv, more nervous. So I choose the videos on internet.
About the socialising thing. It always confused me hearing that introverts only like “small, intimate gatherings”. To me that sounds like being trapped. I hate going to peoples’ houses, especially if there’s hardly anyone there, but I’m really happy to go to a large gathering in a pub/hotel etc that I can easily escape from and nobody will notice when I’ve left. Hiding in a crowd is really a thing. Also the routines thing. I don’t eat breakfast and have a protein shake for lunch and dinner is one of 3 or 4 meals I actually like, food bores me. I have a king size bed and sleep on the same side every day. I’ve moved house in the past year and it was a difficult move. Lack of facilities, and a massive change in routine. I lost all interest in my special subjects and that for me is a sign of depression. Now I will talk to anyone who will listen about my house renovation and feel more like myself now I have a new thing to be obsessed about. Maybe someone can relate 😅
Autism can have your back, but it can also drag you down. I know all about it. I eat two times a week broccoli and have my prossesions constantly located at the same place, sometimes in millimeters precise. I hope things are going well for you!
I am 25 years old. I have always been different. I’ve tried to do so many things in life but have always went back to old habits. Not even joined the marines when I was 20 and struggled with all the simple things in boot camp that everyone else found east and the other recruits even asked me if I was autistic. Like, they were not being rude but genuinely seemed concerned about my mental health. I joined as a reservist and ended up going awol instead of showing up to sign my discharge papers because I was afraid of the social interaction. In my life the only thing that I find enjoyment is is making music. I am a rapper and it took years of endless work to get good enough to actually do live shows at music venues and next month I finally get the biggest break of my life performing at a huge festival. I am not diagnosed with autism but my mom thinks I have it and I’ve ignored so many important things in life out of fear of social interaction. I ghost people and stay in my bubble making music and the only place where I feel connected to people is on a stage performing my well rehearsals songs. I am unable to freestyle. I have to write out everything and it takes typically 2-3 4 hour days to write a song that I am actually proud of.
My granddaughter has autism and exhibits most of these traits. We were confused about it for a long time and it is easier now that we know what we’re dealing with. She is very talented and channels a lot of her energy this way. Whip smart too. Can’t run any BS by her.
Just thought you should know that there's a clicking sound in the audio that may bother some people. I found it a little distracting. But, aside from that, great video! Could relate to all of these.
I just figured my speaker was blown. My ears sometimes do this weird clicking thumping thing when people are on one side of me talking. I hear the weird sounds in the opposite ear. It gets so bad I have to face them to balance the sounds and stop the thumping
My special interest is definitely professional cycling to the point that I will routinely watch a full 4 hour race then go spend hours after that talking about it with other people. (I cannot small talk but if someone brings up cycling to me they are gonna have to be patient because I'll talk for days 😂)

BEES. Honeybees specifically. If my friends want to coast during a get together, someone asks “Hey, how are your bees?” And since I’m a beekeeper, I just launch in to it for 45 minutes.
Same breakfast everyday ✓ Same lunch everyday ✓ Can't stand raw butter, raw milk or cheese ✓ Food can touch but has to be at a certain place on my plate ✓ It's comforting.
I do this a little bit. I don't have a full on meltdown if food touches. However, I do want to appreciate the respective flavors of each food item. My wife used to wonder about this.
05:06 I feel in a lot of cases it's like having to break the ice every time you join an interaction even if its with people you know. So if I go to the pub I feel awkward until either I or my mate "breaks the ice" and then I'm good for the rest of the night. It's also like I forget about certain things that I should ask people. When I'm on my own I can think of lots of stuff I want to talk to people about and when I meet up with them my mind suddenly goes blank or I say it in such a poor way that it doesn't reflect the detailed version that I can brainstorm myself when typing a paragraph in the youtube comments section, or on reddit or 4chan etc. We have a group chat for things like events and pub planning etc and the majority of the conversations are things like football or stuff I don't really follow so it's hard to find your way into an interaction with people that you know but don't have the same interest as the current topic. I guess one trick can be the old "I've no idea what's happening in football at the moment" or something. And also I feel like I'm overclocking my brain and it takes a while for my mouth to catch up with it to the point where I forget certain words that I want to use.
Wow!! As the veteran Mother of a very amazing now 18 year old son, I can say with 110% certainty that you know your stuff!! I will DEFINITELY see if I can find & download your free book (thanks for making it free by the way)!! I’ll be following your channel & watching more of your videos because of this one. Thanks again!! ☺️

Excellent vid. 1:41 Routines..2:37 Special interests, almost obsessive fixation on a topic…3:59 Habits…5:19 socially awkward…6:20 anxiety, easily overwhelmed.
I have autism and my brothers(who don't have autism) are the ones who are the picky eaters lol. I can eat almost anything but fish. I dislike the smell too. Makes me remember when I got car sick and ended up throwing up the fish I ate.
I hate fish too. Mostly because of the bones. I’m fine with sushi and boneless fish. I was just screened for autism today and I’m high functioning, with OCD and ADHD. 😢
@@theantianimeassociation7574 I'm from Trinidad and Tobago so my method may not work for you. look for an ADHD and autism foundation in your area and give them a call.
Yup, I'm on it with what interests me and lost with everything else around me and casual conversations I don't follow well. I know my 93 year old mom I care for goes on sometimes but it is really irksome when she's speaking of a thought out loud or something from off of the top of her head and I'm expected to engage when I'm having to have absolute concentration with something new I'm learning to cook for her.
I’ve suspected that I have high functioning autism for a while now and everything in your video applies to me. I think I’m going to find out for sure. Thank you so much for posting this.
I'm 31 and have known i was a high functioning autistic for years. apart from social anxiety and avoiding eye contact with people i have an intense interest in industry, anything you can produce, and transport. love the videos! very informative

I have an unfortunate heavy interest in politics which does get me into a lot of angry conversations with family members. I also like history and geography though and I may be one of the only autistic people that loves travel (Even when it isn't for vacation). Still hate flying though unless by the window.
The routine thing still confuses me a lot because isn't daily routine always promoted by just about everyone? Routine and traditions are such common human things? At this point diagnoses seems so pointless when it just comes down. Things are just so confusing at this point- Another interesting/strange thing I notice after getting into personality typing is how people joke about certain cognitive function stacks presenting just like traits that define as autism and adhd .-. I really wonder just how much do personality, genetics, and other physical factors have to do with things labeled as mental illness or mental disorder. How much difference is there between personality and things labeled as a diagnosable "disorder"?
first of all, not everyone relates to the symptoms of autism. you are on a spectrum, everybody is, but it depends on how far on the spectrum you are. also, most people don’t have a problem with doing things spontaneously, or maybe small changes doesn’t disturb you. but for most people with autism it does. some symptoms may be a part of just how someone is, and not because they have autism. it really depends.
@@blanka6038 Yeah, I understand that, I'm just confused about trying to define it at all if it always comes back to "well everyone is a bit different"- I hope to understand more but I know it'll take time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I can relate to your questions very well, i have asked myself for years and i also think "everybody has their special interests and habits" but the spectrum visualization makes it easier to understand for me aswell.
I know this is really old, but just offering a testament to the contrary. If my life depended on it, I couldn't do the same thing for two days in a row. Really wish I could tbh.
@@michellepackman1484I hope I don't offend u by this🙏 @leechboilychee I believe that could be like a disorder , when it's beyond preference and seem impossible or highly unable/ much difficulty.
My daughter is 12, she is currently diagnosed ADHD OCD dyslexia, developmental disorder, currently testing for Autism! I’m so sad I missed it! How did I not catch it! 😢
My symptoms have worsened with age. Fortunately my recognition and ability to manage them has increased dramatically. My Daughter is out of town for 2 weeks. I was to share childcare and household duties with another Gramma. Well, switching back and forth absolutely destroyed me. This stressed me to my limit. Then my Daughter announced she is extending her trip another week. I MELTED DOWN !!! So the other gramma is simply staying for 3 weeks and it was very public and very embarrassing. But is was an impossible situation to put me in. My apartment and routine keep me non suicidal and quite happy. When I deviate from it, I PAY !!
This basically describes my daughter. She is obsessed with football (American), and will talk about it non-stop, has to watch it all the time and will play Madden for hours. Also, with her food, she only eats Buffalo wings from a certain place and only with this restaurant's ranch dressing. No other brands of ranch will do, can't eat wings if she doesn't have "that" ranch.
Yea I cant stand things like mayo on my burger or salted chips (the salt makes my lips burn) and the schools food makes me sick and I just go hungry for the school day
@@solarwolf678 yes, that would be my daughter, she does not eat at school, comes home, and the first thing she does is grab a piece of chocolate cake from the fridge (real healthy)

Note: if you're speaking to an autistic person ask them if they mind the term high functioning and low functioning. Personally don't like it as it isn't really very descriptive of someone's intelligence and ability to function in uncomfortable places (loud noises, gross things to touch, smells etc..). It's also just not the preference of most people in the community. Just ask and respect what people want to be called, lol, we're all very different (that is very much coming from a place of spite)
The worst anxiety is when I have done something many times before but still feel that I can/might fail. Being a perfectionist in itselt may not be an autistic trait, but in my case it is a curse.
My obsessive interests include various movies. I can talk endlessly about a certain film for a while and then talk about a different film the next day.
I find I can't understand feelings so my brain gets confused and I'm bouncing off the walls when really I'm actually feeling sad and every emotion changes to anger
The term still exists, it hasn't just been stopped being used all of a sudden. It was just never a medical term (as far as I know, but now isn't) and some small group of people who misunderstand the purpose of it are offended and want to remove it even though it helps people like me who do understand and use it. It's nothing negative about it, you don't want to, that's fine. So it still exists, if it was even used in psychology it wasn't in a serious way or it was much longer ago. Not a real issue today, only issue is people having a problem with it. It's not that HFA switched to ASD for this reason, that has to do with Asperger's. So as a person with high function autism it does help me and I'm glad to see you not treat it as some offensive word just cause there's a group telling you it is, without no good argument. If there's an alternative and it catches on then great, just don't try to control what words people should use or punish those autistic people that find it helpful and ok. There's nothing wrong with it by logic, so don't let others tell you it's bad or get scared in to not using it, in it's actual meaning it has nothing negative, it's just facts about autism. And difference doesn't mean bad, that's the main point of autism, we're different but not bad. Yes some autistic people want to eradicate it as if it's the same as the "n-word". Sorry for the rant and thank you for coming to my TED Talk. I still hate the "YOUT need to see", yeah I don't, wasn't important enough for me...
It all makes sense now. My niece was diagnosed as autistic. We connected the dots and realized my dad is too. I and some of my siblings are on the spectrum as is my daughter. Social setting have always been challenging. I learnt to mimic others behaviour but always felt I didn’t belong. To be honest I have always felt I never belonged.
Im enjoying your videos very much. My son now 32 who id always thought was on the spectrum exhibits so many of these traits. Not so much the anxiety attacks (that I know of) but the obsessions. As a baby/toddler, he had every toy phone available and at friends houses, would search out the phone and would find ways to get to it. As a child he was obsessed with the Titanic and drew this massive ship with hundreds of portholes (my husband had it framed) and now he is into horse showjumping (never grew up near horses), flying (has a licence now), Ironman and marathan events (run 3 so far). He admits that he is an active relaxer.
There's no problem here! I eat the same foods everyday (vegetables, which are for supper only), may vary. They can't touch each other. Eggs must always be on the right side of my breakfast plate, oats on the left. Can we discuss prions? Prime numbers? For several hours? It was so nice of you to do a video about me. I blush.
I was completely obsessed with Star Trek to the point I could explain in detail exactly how the warp drive actually works. I knew every episode (of the original series) by title. Later I became completely obsessed with my Atari 800 computer. Many people bought this 8-bit computer as a game machine. I didn't play games on it but carefully studied every detail of how it worked. That little computer taught me everything I ever needed to know about computer science. I later transferred that deep interest to the Macintosh where I am now. In school I always only had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, small bag of potato chips and an ice cream sandwich with two half-pint cartons of chocolate milk. Every day for more than six years. I could never stand soups of any kind and it was a very long time before I would eat anything with tomatoes in it (pizza was first, when I was in college), though always I put ketchup on everything.

So funny. My son gets so completely obsessed with what he is doing and will talk non stop for as long as you will let him, going into incredible detail and stories. It is hard for him socialising because of this. The problem is, he has no idea he does this and it’s not easy to tell him for fear of making him feel bad, so waiting for some moment when I can use humour around it.
Im 33 and have never been diagnosed or even suspected ASD until my wife pointed it out. Every one of these symptoms is me 100%. It doesnt bother me or cause me any issues except its hard to make and maintain friends and I cant eat fruits and vegetables. Ever since I was little as soon as the fruit or veggie touches my mouth I get the urge to puke. Ive been trying to eat fruits for the last year or so but its slow going.
That's okay. It's now proven that a carnivore diet, with no fruit or vegetable, is safe and healthy, and very helpful for neuro-diverse people of all ages. And yes, proper human diet is my special interest. 😊
My obsession has always been music, I'll go deep diving random albums by random artists all day in my free time, and sometimes I find songs I love and I'll listen to the same song on repeat for weeks. In high school, I ate a strawberry pop-tart for lunch every day because everything else sounded meh, and I loved the texture of it. 😂Nowadays my lunches are a little more diverse
Omg Im the same with music. To the point I have over 4 thousand songs on my playlist! I have a deep passion for The Beatles despite being an eclectic goth/alternative person, I HAVE to buy anything Beatles related when I see it. It’s been this way since I was 14 and I basically own some pretty amazing memorabilia from the 60’s cause of it cause I used to work at a thrift store!
No spontaneous plans, ever, if I can help it. Food wise I make huge pots with all kinds of yummy veggies and some meat, spice it heavily and eat it for days or weeks till it’s gone and then do it again. I isolate at least 2 days a week, not leaving my apartment or speaking to anyone. I’m EXTREMELY verbal but particular about language and will correct others. I have an EXTENSIVE jewelry collection and know loads of facts and history of each piece. The kicker is the ZIT VIDEOS !! I stream pimple popping videos aaaaallllll day or I pick my skin bloody. I watch zit videos while I watch tv and then check world headlines obsessively as well. I listen to the same songs over and over. I have dyslexia. I will ALWAYS talk a the “elephant in the room “ to the horror of others and still don’t understand why honesty is so challenging to everyone. I’m dead loyal, have had very few friends but have a family that I go above and beyond for. I’m a fountain of love encouragement for those I love. I’ve been blissfully ALONE for the last 9 years and I’m happy almost every day, because I FINALLY honor my own needs.
The reasons with the communication part is that I lack and wanting to be engaging and inspiring or magnetizing people to me and aspire to have highly advanced social/communication skills.
I have been diagnosed with ADHD , OCD, Anxiety, PTSD, and dyslexia. My family is filled with people on the spectrum..I have all the traits but people say I don't look like I am autistic. I need a diagnosis
I've learned to love my autistic self and would never want to be anything else, but it took years to get to that point! I do better staying away from people with no awareness or tolerance for things I do that they can not understand.
I am the Sheldon Cooper of my seat on the couch I will move my children and fur babies out of my seat. I am obbssed with cooking crafting and Dr. Who. I hate a dirty kitchen yet hate doing dishes. I will mentally and emotional breakdown hearing an animal being slaughtered. I suck at forced conversations like what am I supposed to say hmm okay thats cool and nice about topics I do not know about. I have a massive meltdown and embarrasse myself almost everytime.
I guess we all get embarrass sometimes for no reason. No one should be able to make us feel uncomfortable. Is ok to feel awkward, embarrass, shame, guilt, sorry, sad, happy etc., etc. thank God we can experience these feelings.
I once knew a guy with severe Asperger's whose special interest was Disney movies. He told me that he knew all of the movies by heart, and I told him to prove it one day. He did an entire 30 minute scene from Aladdin word for word, while imitating all the voices and singing the songs perfectly. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. His level of recall and skill was fascinating. I could quote a random line from any movie without telling him which movie it was, and he could finish the scene. He was able to finish every single one I ever tried. I never stumped him once. He actually did know all of them by heart.
I relate so hard!! Communication differences have caused frustration, I’m obsessed with leadership (any and every concept) and have been told I’m too intense about it. Diagnosed ADHD and suspected autism 1. It’s hard to get ppl to understand where I’m coming from, like frustratingly difficult.
See... I'm slightly different on the food front. I don't know whether it's being female or the fact that I'm an anomaly since I've always been open about trying new food. I do have restrictions: couscous is a no-go because of the texture. I don't know why but no, I can't to very hot and spicey food probably for the same reason brushing my teeth is a chore. I'm sensitive to both chilli heat and peppermint (actual fresh mint is okay). I'm pretty good with most other food, although I don't eat a ton of red meat (it's expensive and not as delicious as chicken or a variety of fish) and the last point.... HAHAHA. Yes. I have a situation where that happens almost every time with increasing severity. It's called an 'Interview'. Seriously it sucks since I'm looking for a job yet I'm fighting just to speak so I know I'm speaking jumbled nonsense and making things worse. I'm on meds for it but I think I'm gonna perma-struggle with it. It's been years since I had to; I lost my last job as the company had serious financial problems and is on its' last legs.... and my interview for THAT I remember was a train wreck but went well; basically, I had a cat that was 20 years old and I'd had her all my life. She'd had a seizure in the night and bitten clean through her tongue. We went to the vet knowing that it would be it, and I had to have my interview after coming straight from having my cat put down. I was a mess but the staff made me stay and just get it over with. I think that's probably why I wasn't having a meltdown because I was too preoccupied with being sad.
The details of this video has helped me understand more of my habits, especially with food and always thinking I just have a childlike taste of food but really its my small section of safe foods and hating when foods touch on the same dish. Along with what me special interest is, i can not fully name it yet since its around the range of just video games.
You see me. Waiting for a later in life diagnosis following AQ50 and was advised to assume I am autistic pending a test and to learn more about ASD. I can honestly say this really resonates with me. Down to collecting vintage stickers 😂
My son and I are diagnosed adhd but autism runs I'm ym family too. I'm fairly certain we both are adhd autism but not sure how much difference a diagnosis would make. I mean we are a bit quirky sometimes very quirky, but we try to embrace it and being aware
1. I did not think I liked routine til I realized I eat the same 2 things for breakfast and watch funny videos with breakfast (either breakfast sandwich or fruit smoothie) and after dinner I watch autism videos or more informational videos. 2. My special interest is autism lol 3. I hate most sauces especially ranch (I mostly just like ketchup, mayo and honey mustard), I do not like my food or drinks warm and I love textures like Jello, cream of wheat, creamy soups, squishy or soft foods. 4. I try to communicate but sometimes I just either don't like the small talk or I don't like the things they do and they don't like the things I do (basically most people don't want to hear about autism or second life lmao) 5. I don't do well with animals or people running around fast or being too loud and repetitive, I tend to bawl or scream at them which is embarrassing. I am honestly nervous because I am scared my baby boy isn't going to be as calm as my daughter was. I don't want to be one of those moms that yell at her kids for no reason.
This video was very informative good content as always. You know for the past 7 months I've been studying astrology and zodiac signs of that nature. I read article where it says that capicorns are almost autistic. I'm capicorn born December 27th 1981. Capicorns have alot autistic traits. Capicorns are very routine rigid people. Were loners we like being by ourselves. We really don't mess well with others in social settings. We have hard time communicating with others. We suffer from anxiety and we over analyze everything way too much. Lol.
the thing is with routines, i tend to want a routine, (im not diagnosed with ADHD, but i show a lot of signs and getting evaluated soon, same with autism) but i never stick to it or follow through with making one, i either lose motivation or completely forget to write it down, i also love trying new things but sometimes new things tend to make me anxious and i just stay home, i want to try drastically new things but anxiety just takes over and i leave it alone
i am obssessed with birthdays, it's literally all i ever talk about and i love learning about them so much. its gotten to the point where i literally know hundreds of birthdays because it fascinates me so much. i really hope i can see if i have autism
My special interests: Live Grateful Dead shows from 1966 to about 1987, music theory, archeology, and cosmology. Oh, music production and mastering, too. 😂🎉😅🎉
I believe sensory issues, especially sound is a big one because I sometimes have an emotional reaction to certain loud sounds close to me. I immediately feel like crying especially if I can't get away from it fast enough. It just amps up my anxiety so quickly. Crowds and noisy places, certain strong food smells...my husband got truffle fries once and the smell nearly caused me to stop eating and sit as far away from him as possible. Perfumes and cologne don't usually bug me even if they're strong and bad but I HATE funky food odors like different cheeses or some meat like mutton will hit the digust-o-meter pretty high. Can't wear certain textured clothes and bright lights can immediately make me nauseous. Thought all of these were an adhd thing
The getting easily overwhelmed happens to me a lot lately. Sometimes it triggers me even a huge migraine due to it. My boyfriend tries to realise when I'm getting stressed and calm me down before I spiral out of control, but it doesn't always work
So I cannot for the life of me eat a food that has a weird texture that’s mixed with one that has a completely different texture, like for example if strawberry jam has actual cut up strawberries in it I cannot eat it, do you guys think this might apply to the strange eating habits?
Spreadsheets. Lends well in the work place but I find that it's very relaxing to get lost in the formulas and numbers. I have almost everything in my life to a well tuned automated spreadsheet. My to do list, my reading list, budget, goals, meal plan, my stats for work are better than the tracker my work gives me because I fine tuned it to be immediate rather than waiting untill the next day.

As a dude with the 'tism, I have an odd question... Fight club is one of my top 3 favorite movies (doesn't Even make my top ten novels. I noticed the wheelieboard you have hanging on your wall, I also am an avid woodpusher (I made 23 year skate veteran last month). And lastly I also noticed that sexy ass Fender Jazz bass on the wall to your left, and I too, am a Lord of the Low-end... Now my question is, all that merely a coincidence? Is it perhaps synchronicity? Or is there some underlying thread that to our interest in these things that might have an origin with our autism?
Eating and diet is a special interest, esp Mediterranean antioxidant diet. basically eat 5 things. A favorite is my stir fry where everything is mixed together. 😮 Black Forbidden Rice, sprouted legumes we sprout like black lentils are done in 48 hours. Red tomato Purple onions Red sweet potato. Lots of color. Have lost 60 pounds in past year by eating differently.
I recently realized I kept my head down looking at the floor because looking straight ahead gives me a full view of TOO MUCH. And all the visual input is overwhelming. I feel awkward in social situations too. And frankly I realized that when I was a child, what I saw before as me being unreasonable, a brat, and overreacting was actually just meltdowns from being too overwhelmed.
I am diagnosed with Aspergers (yes I know not a thing anymore but whatever) and I know that I have routines, there are may foods I hate and gag. Sushi is one of them. I love history, old movies especially silent films and can bore the cral out of people. My boyfriend says he loves it because he loves learning things from me. That was the first time I've been told this. The list is fantastic and I deal with all of those. Thanks for this and all your other videos. Love it. You're awesome!
As you mentioned in another video, I "zone in" on anything that allows me to be creative. I've always had a problem speaking, even in small groups, that have strangers or new acquaintances. As of late, I've noticed that, even in my circle, I have to stop talking and think just to communicate the same thought I was already communicating. I have a tendency to forget how to say the words my mind is thinking and I want to come out of my mouth. And although noises help regulate my, age related, ringing in my ears, I can't handle too much noise that I didn't create or choose. I took several self tests, one of which you recommended, all coming back with a result of being on the spectrum so, I'm seriously considering seeking professional testing. I mean, my daughter had to get it from somewhere right? It doesn't, normally, just show up randomly does it? My generation wasn't open to the possibility. It was just behavior and discipline for the generation before me so, that's how kids got treated.
Is having serial special interests a thing? I don't have ones that I've maintained over time, but I don't do anything by halves. When I become interested in something I research it to the point of reading literal research papers about it or related to it. e.g. (not an actual example) if I was interested in baseball, I'd end up reading papers about the physics of aluminum vs wood when striking something.
That’s very interesting my son was diagnosed this past year and his interest at the age of ten is astrophysics. As an adult my docs think I should get checked out. They think as a kid I should have been diagnosed because girls often went undiagnosed. Looking back my obsession has always been psychology. Still as an adult I can go on for hours either studying or talking just like my son.
I don't like it when different foods start mixing around the edges where they meet. But I can live with that. I have more of a problem mixing up what I eat next off my plate (i.e.eat a bit of turkey, than a bit of cranberry sauce, then more turkey.) I can't do that. It just feels wrong. Instead I eat everything of one thing on my plate before I eat the next thing on it (I eat all the turkey on my plate, then the potatoes, then the cranberry sauce. I'm surprised no one ever noticed my habit. they only noticed when I took the crispy skin ooff the chicen. Crispy skin is favorite part, so I often save it to eat last.
I separate my food on my plate, and I rarely eat hot food if I can avoid it. It is unpleasant to me for some reason, and I can't taste the food when it is hot.
I'm not fussy about my food touching but I do tend to eat food by concentrating on each item - eat all the meat, then eat all the peas, then eat all the carrots.
Yes!
I guess I do that too. Damn!!!
Same... I'll even dissect a pie and eat the filling then the pastry or pick stuff out of a chicken korma to eat that first the the chicken then rice... it's also called organised eating
idk if this has correlation with autism but I will always try to get the best bite by eating the foods evenly and in combo for every bite
I tend to eat veggies first then the rest of whatever is on my plate.
the "difficulty socializing" I find is more a difficulty in socializing... with neurotypical people. I find it amazing how those difficulties start to go away when interacting with other autistic people, because we understand each other
💯 agree with this
100% agree!
I've decided that this is the year of me learning to be myself, to be comfortable with myself.
Your vids help to let me know that some of my behaviours are acceptable and that I should feel less guilt.
Thank you for that. Take care xx
1. Love routines
2. Obsessive interests
3. Odd food habits
4. Difficulty in conversions
5. Overwhelmed easily
That’s my stepson. Nine years, more understanding and empathy, just wondering how to get him to grow at 28 years old.
@@randydub6868autism isn’t something you grow out of. You can learn to live with it healthier but you can’t grow out of it.
Conversation
3. Not excessively bound by the food habits of others
Unless it's asking how someone is doing or talking about mutual interests, I'm at a complete loss over what to say 5) I had two meltdowns in my life: one two weeks after moving houses and another after my mom got into a physical argument and threw something ( I ended up fleeing and sobbing in my room )
...And that's enough life sharing from the looks of it
2 meltdowns
I cannot even imagine.
I broke at 33 and have more meltdowns as an adult than I did as a child. It sucks.
But I'm improving on it again.
Thank God.
Thks for the summary.
I was diagnosed with autism a adhd when I was 32 then found you chanel you helped me understand my diagnosis slowly leaning why I do things differently
Diagnosed at 38 and completely agree.
Think I might have dyslexia aslwell though 🤔
I'm 32, just had ADHD diagnosed and going through ASD assessment. It's definitely a wake up call finding out late
If you are in UK could you please let me know how to get diagnosed?
@alexandermike1640 oh sod off conman.

About your dad, I always know when that happens, and Im embarrassed. Then frustrated that they lose interest 😢.
My son was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. He has everyone of those. Also has tourettes and adhd and ocd
Hey are you saying TV is disgusting but UA-cam is OK? Pretty much the same thing. Videos
I heard that too :(
I just figured my speaker was blown.
My special interest is my graphic novel series. If I'm not working on it, I'm antsy and don't know what to do with myself.

Same breakfast everyday ✓ Same lunch everyday ✓ Can't stand raw butter, raw milk or cheese ✓ Food can touch but has to be at a certain place on my plate ✓

I don't have a full on meltdown if food touches. However, I do want to appreciate the respective flavors of each food item. My wife used to wonder about this.

I feel in a lot of cases it's like having to break the ice every time you join an interaction even if its with people you know.
And also I feel like I'm overclocking my brain and it takes a while for my mouth to catch up with it to the point where I forget certain words that I want to use.
after hearing some of this starting to think my dad might be mildly autistic
Wow!! As the veteran Mother of a very amazing now 18 year old son, I can say with 110% certainty that you know your stuff!! The routine thing still confuses me a lot because isn't daily routine always promoted by just about everyone? Routine and traditions are such common human things? At this point diagnoses seems so pointless when it just comes down. Things are just so confusing at this point-
Another interesting/strange thing I notice after getting into personality typing is how people joke about certain cognitive function stacks presenting just like traits that define as autism and adhd .-.
@@blanka6038 Yeah, I understand that, I'm just confused about trying to define it at all if it always comes back to "well everyone is a bit different"-
I hope to understand more but I know it'll take time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I can relate to your questions very well, i have asked myself for years and i also think "everybody has their special interests and habits" but the spectrum visualization makes it easier to understand for me aswell.

I would love it if you'd put up a visual queue with the number and trait (like a count down) when you do these types of videos.
My obsessive interests include various movies. I can talk endlessly about a certain film for a while and then talk about a different film the next day.
I find I can't understand feelings so my brain gets confused and I'm bouncing off the walls when really I'm actually feeling sad and every emotion changes to anger
that doesn't sound like austism, that's emotional managing issues.
Cartoods. Severe sensory processing disorder
@@zakbrand7354 yeah, could be. I am no expert on this stuff, thanks :)
Thank you. I'm new this. I'm a parent to a just diagnosed autism toddler. This gives me peace of mind on how to help my son.

Perfectly describes me and my sons. Nightmare if all 3 of us have a meltdown
Wow. You've got it all. You're gifted.
My special interest is raising snakes, spiders, and scorpions. And I have daily routines that are part of their care. This helps me so much!
It’s just 7 days and the outbreaks are well treated and unseen. Thank you so much #Autism #Cancer #Herpes for curing my HSV 1&2 completely. 🌱ua-cam.com/channels/_YFEEZEr1BxGkNg1d4vqww.html 💙🍀
Another great video Dan, thank you, 😊
Im 33 and have never been diagnosed or even suspected ASD until my wife pointed it out.
I'm pretty good with most other food, although I don't eat a ton of red meat (it's expensive and not as delicious as chicken or a variety of fish)
and the last point.... HAHAHA.
This describes me 100% especially #1 I do the exact same thing every day
The details of this video has helped me understand more of my habits, especially with food and always thinking I just have a childlike taste of food but really its my small section of safe foods and hating when foods touch on the same dish.
There’s a weird clicking sound in the video it made it hard for me to focus
Same 🤣
Thank you so much for teaching me on things that can happen it helps better understand my son
hi! i like your videos a lot, but im wondering what are those clicking sounds that are always in your videos :O
It’s his lens focusing on the camera and his onboard camera microphone is picking up that sound 👍🏻
How do I hold down a job with autism 😢. Interacting with people is so draining.
👍Haha betsy! Love ur videos 📹 💗..hate green foods...n my favorite color is green.
My son and I are diagnosed adhd but autism runs I'm ym family too. I'm fairly certain we both are adhd autism but not sure how much difference a diagnosis would make. I mean we are a bit quirky sometimes very quirky, but we try to embrace it and being aware
Oh for sure!! Maybe look for a diagnosis referral? Thank you so much for the comment! Please subscribe to my channel to see more videos from me :).
Oh yes, the good ol' "being fascinated by oranges on bread" symptom! How could i forget 😂
1. I did not think I liked routine til I realized I eat the same 2 things for breakfast and watch funny videos with breakfast (either breakfast sandwich or fruit smoothie) and after dinner I watch autism videos or more informational videos.
2. My special interest is autism lol
3. I hate most sauces especially ranch (I mostly just like ketchup, mayo and honey mustard), I do not like my food or drinks warm and I love textures like Jello, cream of wheat, creamy soups, squishy or soft foods.
4. I try to communicate but sometimes I just either don't like the small talk or I don't like the things they do and they don't like the things I do (basically most people don't want to hear about autism or second life lmao)
Lol.
You should analyze the idea that stars determine brain chemistry. Just a thought.
"betsy? who's betsy?!" i'm betsy. betsy is me.
the thing is with routines, i tend to want a routine, (im not diagnosed with ADHD, but i show a lot of signs and getting evaluated soon, same with autism) but i never stick to it or follow through with making one, i either lose motivation or completely forget to write it down, i also love trying new things but sometimes new things tend to make me anxious and i just stay home, i want to try drastically new things but anxiety just takes over and i leave it alone
i am obssessed with birthdays, it's literally all i ever talk about and i love learning about them so much. its gotten to the point where i literally know hundreds of birthdays because it fascinates me so much. i really hope i can see if i have autism
My special interests: Live Grateful Dead shows from 1966 to about 1987, music theory, archeology, and cosmology. Oh, music production and mastering, too. 😂🎉😅🎉
Awesome aspies!!
I live with 4 aspies and have severe ADHD myself. This is 100% our life ❤
It’s just 7 days and the outbreaks are well treated and unseen. Thank you so much #Autism #Cancer #Herpes for curing my HSV 1&2 completely. 🌱ua-cam.com/channels/_YFEEZEr1BxGkNg1d4vqww.html 💙🍀
You said a free download of your book that I could not find it in the description
Wait, Aspergers isn't a thing anymore?
Functioning levels are often regarded as harmful. It's how the world sees us. You quickly mentioned a better system, support needs.
I have a obsession with all things I'm like my father. I'm interested in nearly all things.
Is having serial special interests a thing? I don't have ones that I've maintained over time, but I don't do anything by halves. When I become interested in something I research it to the point of reading literal research papers about it or related to it. e.g. (not an actual example) if I was interested in baseball, I'd end up reading papers about the physics of aluminum vs wood when striking something.
i have been told my whole life i have autism, and i have a hard time accepting it
My guy LOVESS music & I do too but I didn’t know someone could love it more than me 😅 I love it though we connect with it ❤
4:04 lol that's me😂. I have to eat each part in a specific order
