My best guess is he means the live action Lego Ninjago movie that was announced. I haven't seen the show in a looong while but from memory it doesn't really do anything with the Lego concept outside of the characters being Lego people, and even then they reference things like them having fingers and noses, so I can probably see that maybe working if the cast and writing is good but if there was a live action version of *The* Lego Movie announced then yeah that will go to shit no questions asked.
I saw this film in theaters with my dad, who mainly associated with music also. At first when watching it, I was saying to myself "Why did he make this film LEGO®?". But the music is sounds catchy and familiar music u probably didn't know Pharrell made. But in my dad's experience with music, he finds Pharrell's story inspiring and the fact its LEGO® is a creative idea. So this is awesome as a film, mid as a LEGO® movie.
I really enjoyed the film and man i knew the dude was skilled and all and has his own big song's but mannnn literally every song except two i knew and back to back it had me like HE WORKED ON THAT?!! Sickkkkkk
This isn't a "Lego"movie this is a pharrel documentary, I wouldn't recommend watch it unless you like/LOVE pharrel (like me) or you're open minded to learn about that music/culture
Yeah its literally just a documentary but with lego guys instead of real people. Honestly crazy interesting since u see how much they take advantage of the animation medium.
In my opinion, as a fan of the Lego Ninjago cartoon at the time, the movie failed because, for one, it wasn't made as much by lego as the previous, and two, it wasn't related at all to the story being told in the show. As for Piece by Piece, I'm planning to watch it asap.
As someone born and raised in Virginia, loves legos, and absolutely LOVES music/hip hop, this movie was AMAZING, I never knew Pharrell’s full story, and I can see so much of myself in the movie, I legitimately cried in the scene where he got drowned out by his emotions, im going through so much in my life right now and that scene just encapsulates everything going through my head, constantly drowning everything out focusing so much on the future that I’m ignoring everything in front of me, it’s such a good movie from both a visual and emotional perspective, if you’re going through anything in life, this movie is a perfect watch to help clear your mind and escape reality for a while, such a good idea to tell this story through legos.
I also have synesthesia and I could definitely relate when Pharrell had explained how he could visualize the music. Definitely think it was cool how they explain that in a Lego form
I LOVED this film. Im a massive fan of Pharrel's music so it was awesome to learn about his story and also just have an excuse to listen to more of his music.Would I recommend this to someone who doesn't know/like his music less so but its a lot better then the state of the current films being released.
It was really cool for those of us from Virginia Beach, we got to see places we have been built with lego. Also pharrel is awesome and also a lot more popular here.

My brother really likes all of these musical artists, stuff that I’m kinda separate from. He got me to watch this movie with him, and it was really cool!
this movie was so good. I’ve been struggling a lot artistically and Carl Sagan’s Cosmos has been incredibly beneficial and stabilizing - learning that other artists have had the same experience is fascinating
I just want to add that you’ve reviewed this from the perceptive of “the Lego brand” and as if it’s a Lego led movie. It’s not. It was Pharrell’s biopic and he asked if it could be made in Lego. The idea came from him, not them. It’s just a stylistic choice.
As a fan of Lego and specifically ninjago, the animated film is cool on its own but I can’t get past the fact that it failed to follow enough of the established mythology and canon from the show. A live action version could be good but as long as it follows the established canon from the first few seasons.
Algorithmic Punch! I saw it, I thought it was fun, and similar to your take, really thought how they expressed the synesthesia and song building as really innovative. The part where they talk about his downfall gets kind of muddled with mentions of his successful collaborations with brands, which felt oddly meta, in an almost thoughtless way, as the the movie was literally a brand collab at it's very foundation. Excited to see if it helps push animation into new story telling categories though.
I went to see it on november 9th coz it was my birthday (british btw) and i LOVED it. The theatre was empty but somekids came in with their parents coz they thought it was lego movie 3 and they left straight after the movie started 💀💀💀
As somebody with synesthesia myself, I find this really awesome!! There isn’t a lot of representation in the media, and I’m really glad to see it being represented in such a beautiful and interesting way. I am definitely going to watch this movie.
I've never cared for his music or seen any Lego movies but that they're getting creative with biopics is good (well somewhat if the story is still generic biopic they're all so identical) so it's nice to see something creative being attempted hopefully more creators create and experiment.
I personally loved it, but I think the marketing was kinda bad. Because every one I knew didn’t know about it, and the only reason I watched it was because of my brother
Using Lego as a creative medium, real or CG, is the entire point of creativity, and lego, the ultimate building block toy of all building block toys. If Pharrel wants to add exaggerated, cartoony, stop motion antics to his biopic, it's not a bad idea.
I feel like this movie has truly demonstrated the death of the family film. This movie, in every way, is a family movie. One kids can enjoy and parents can like. But the Hollywood has constrained the industry to have certain movies for certain people that a movie that can be enjoyed by everyone is now just ignored by everyone. Because why go to a movie that you and your kid will enjoy when you could see a movie that you will like better and your child could see a different movie that they’ll like better. The fact is, the theater is no longer a place for the family, it’s now just a place for either you or the person younger than you, not both
Even though I haven’t seen the movie yet, the concept alone intrigues me. A documentary of a famous celebrity told through Lego pieces sounds like a stupid idea. But if you think about it a bit, this just shows that Lego is now an art form in of itself
Not gonna lie, the marketing really put me off it. Happy by Pharrell Williams is probably the worst song I know - it incorporates fake corporate joy and happiness, it exists _just_ to make money without meaning. As far as I knew even Pharrel Williams didn’t like the song too for similar reasons. A movie that’s supposed to be made his passion and the story of his life, but told using LEGO bricks? That’s fairly interesting. Having the exact opposite of that in the trailers is the worst choice possible. I know that the film has corporate agents as a major villain, but that’s not entirely apparent in the promotional material so the damage is already done.
In the movie, Pharrell mentioned that Lego is a creative medium with limitless possibilities, so it was the best way to capture his imagination. I'm paraphrasing, of course.
