I think by having Danny Carey as their drummer, makes Tool, by default one of the luckiest bands ever.
    Cheers, mate, great video.
    (To clarify! :
They are all really lucky to have each other, don't get me wrong! But his skills alone is enough to warrant my praise. There's a reason many regards him as one of the best drummer of this century.
In short, they are all great and irreplaceable, but this is a drumming/danny video, so don't think I've forgotten about them😉 I have comented the exact same thing on each and every one of them on videos discussing/reacting to them.

Went to Lollapalooza in 1997 at the age of 16 primarily to see Korn. I left with a new favorite band in Tool and watching Danny Carey is what made me finally decide to save my money, buy a kit and pick up some sticks. To this day I am a big Tool fan but rarely ever listen to Korn. lol

An interesting thing, as you brought up some of Danny's hi-hat work, is that I read in an interview with him, he caught the tail end of gigging work where disco grooves were still going strong(him being 58 now). So, if you look back to the earlier stuff from Undertow and Opiate, often times he was incorporating disco hi-hat grooves into a hard rock format. "Sober" is a perfect example, or if you reverse the open/close of the hats, the title track "Undertow". Pretty cool covert historical chops.

drhexagonapus I am adrummer, not that should make my views any more valid cause they are all subjective anyway....... Ignoring all of Fear Inoculum's tracks, cause I think most of those songs are more technical than any other songs from the other albums. To talk about the other albums, Rosetta Stoned, and Triad might be the hardest from the older stuff, but yeah Ticks is still hard, its just not as hard as it sounds anyways. And tbh the part that people think is really hard (the beginning rhythm that persists throughout), is one of the easiest parts- however, it is REALLY hard once you have to add in the double bass. I also think the Grudge is pretty hard.

TOOL and Danny Carrey know how to hide their odd meters because they play in eighth notes and triplets a lot instead of hard chunkier sounding quarter notes. It also seems like the meters are subdivided into smaller pulsing like here in this song: 3, 3, & 3 (which is 9/8) then: 3, 3, & 2 (which is 8/8 -- not a 4/4 feel) and then finally: 3, 2, & 2 (which is 7/8) for this main Laterals riff. This is how they make odd meters grove instead of how a lot of bands do it (like RUSH), where you almost always have that hard ONE like you mentioned. Incidentally, did you know that this song is almost entirely constructed around the mathematical Fibonacci Sequence (everything from the pacing as well as the philosophy of the lyrics, to the music, and even to the time signatures)? Here check it out; this will completely blow your mind: ua-cam.com/video/uOHkeH2VaE0/v-deo.html

So glad you mentioned the hi hat rhythm at 11:00 As a drummer myself it took weeks just to run through once without a mistake. Danny plays the hi hat double hit quarter open twice then double hit half open twice. My trick was the quarter note to use heel down foot up and for the halfs I just raised my whole foot to get the quick louder hihat wash sound. The album version you can hear the subtle difference but DC doesnt slack he plays it live as well. A true master! Great overview BTW! ~Sub'd~

I agree. I find the most difficult part is getting the right amount of power on the bass drum, when my brain is stressed thinking of the triplets on the high-hat.

Hey Steve! Just want to say off the bat I love your channel! I have a 13-year old who won a spot as set drummer in middle school jazz band and is gearing up for drum line in high school - we loved your drum line video - very inspirational for us! Keep it going man, love your knowledge and cool laid back approach.
Carl Palmer maybe? Saw someone else asked for that in your teachers mistake video. Laughed my ass off with the clean shirt comment. JTF

I really appreciate you taking the time to drop some knowledge about one of my favorite drummers. You mentioned Jimmy Chaimberlain, another absolute all-time favorite. From a total know-nothing perspective, I have always said my favorite thing about watching Danny is the incredible leverage he has over the drum set. He's a large human being, and for that reason I think he just has a fairly unique look.

TheSkyline75 large is an understatement! He’s so big, his view of his drums is probably like a satellite pic! I’d be surprised if he could even see a 6” tom from that altitude!

Not sure if someone else has mentioned this but Danny has said Bill Bruford is one of his favorite drummers, possibly his favorite. Great comparison! I’m in love with Fear Inoculum, and I can’t believe it’s been over a year already. Love the video

This drummer is not of this world and I don't care who thinks other drummers are better u have that right but Danny plays with so much heart his life is the drums and I beleive he will keep studying them until he leaves this place but to you people that don't think he's the best all I d got to say is Rosetta stoned triad aennima lateralas it just don't end the creativeness and the fact that he rites music like this still is amazing and in my opinion badest fucking drummer to ever walk the earth live on Danny and tool

My analogy of D. C. is that the band is playing together in a rehearsal studio. The four of them are facing each other and they all have in ear monitors. Danny can see what his bandmates are playing, but he has the in ears from the rehearsal room next door. Brilliant. And great reaction. Subbed.

Just found your channel. I love your choice of drummers and your stance on music and musicians. Already subscribed of course. On the topic of danny and future reviews. You surely must do some videos on jimmy chamberlain! He and danny are so similar to me. Great limb independence. Big tall guys. Awesome high hat technique. Great dynamics. Great speed and looseness. Also some great videos of jimmy on youtube. I'll be so amped when you eventually do a jimmy video. Thanks mate!

I listened to little over half of
the album before the stream I was listening to got taken down but my first impression of the album was.... Holy shit uncompressed drums. It's so nice to hear drums that actually sound like drums in 2019.

    • @leeland446

I know it's crazy, who knew uncompressed drums is still possible in metal / prog . Ha! Lol. So many metal drummers have been victim to cookie cutter ,over compressed, trigger drumming.
