His snare drum is a custom drum made by Alan Van Kleef of VK Drums. It’s called the 7emptest snare. He was recommended to Danny by John Tempesta.

So on the little "solo" around the middle of the song the math gets insanely complex.
His right hand is playing the swiss triplets on FIVE different drums, his left is playing quadruplets, his hihat is going in 3s and 4s and his kick drum is keeping the overall beat of the song. (I think)
On top of this, he is also counting the bars, and taking away some of the toms on both (but mostly his right) hands while playing up to the crescendo towards the end of the section, so in his head he is keeping count of 4 different rhythms plus one count. FIVE DIFFERENT COUNTS!
He could play a fifth rhythm, but he'd need to be naked.

Once you get the feel for the song, it’s a lot easier. The hi hats and the bass drum match each other part of the way through. Then once you get the feel for the triplets (not Swiss triplets) you just move them around the kit where it fits. After that, you just count those triplets down from five sets to two as the guitar gets louder. It’s all about breaking it down :)

You spoke of his unappreciated grove, but the thing that I think is unappreciated is he ability to write an emotional drum line. We think nothing of emotional guitars or vocals, or key/synths, but I've never heard such an emotive drummer, who is able to load their songs with suspense, or melancholy or fury, - some of the greatest rock bands around have recognizably excellent drummers, but rarely do mainstream listeners say "oh my god" and swell with feeling when the drums kick in...
    That's on Danny.

@@triffle69 had the pleasure to listen to KC live in Arena di Verona last year, featuring the triple drummer lineup of Harrison, Mastelotto and Stacey, and the concept is kind of the same: to have the percussive element as a compositional and musical tool instead of "just" keeping time. I think the influence is mutual, early Tool, specially on Lateralus, have a distinct KC vibe, then the influence came back and KC incorporated some Tool vibes in their music. IMHO, Tool is more like a romanic church, build upon precisely crafted, mathematical proportions, while KC is the Sagrada Familia, massive yet haphazardly alien

It so hard to believe, because he’s not sitting there counting..he is playing by feel cause each section tells a story. He’s just narrating in a foreign language. If you listen to him on all of his albums you can hear him building up to each album, and now this is the most intricate one. And they don’t have to kick your ass every second anymore because they’ve already done that. Don’t know why I’m writing this exactly, and that is another reason why Tool doesn’t do interviews per say, because what is said will be misconstrued and that’s a guarantee regardless of the eloquence..Music ultimately is the best language, and Danny is eloquent as fuck. Rudiments. Practice, practice, practice!!!

I know I can't, it's such a beautiful simplicity when seeing real professionals play, bassists, guitarists, vocalists, but especially the cream of the crop drummers baffles me, and I'm just glad I'm here to hear them and enjoy these things, and stand in awe of how they can make a mountain from the mound of dirt they started with.
