The Best Budget External Recorder: Atoms Ninja Inferno Review

- When I got my C100 mark ii, it came bundled with an Atomos Ninja Blade Recorder, a few years later when it broke I replaced it with an Atomos Ninja Inferno. Despite some issues when it first arrived, overall I'm very pleased with this monitor/recorder and would defiantly recommend it to anyone looking for a bright large monitor, and anyone looking to get higher quality proves files out of their camera.
I know it may be very hard to see a difference in the footage from the C100's internal MP4 files, and the Prores 422 from the Ninja Blade. UA-cam compression has probably destroyed any slight difference in detail, but even on my 5k retina iMac there is very little difference. The advantages come when you want to VFX or a very heavy colour grade.
All BTS footage from the shoot was shot on a Canon XC10 in aputure priority mode. Graded in Davinci Resolve + Film Convert.

Really well made and answered all my questions, thanks!
Thank you, I’m glad you found the video helpful!
Awesome! Looking forward to working with you with this on next GYIB!
Thanks! Can’t wait for it!
does your ninja inferno let you record 1080p 50fps? thanks!
Great video, thank you. One question. Why didn't you get the Atomos Ninja V for your C100 mkII?
I’m glad you found it useful! Purely the screen size, I find it easier to check focus on the bigger screen
Hello, love your video, wanted to ask I have a c100 mark ii would an Atmos ninja be compatible even though it's 4k?
Or would it be better to get the Atmos Inferno?
Yes, any recorder with a HDMI port will work with the C100 regardless of the resolution.
Which batteries would you recommend? Can you add a link to those? Thx!
I'd go for the large Sony NPF Batteries, like these: www.amazon.co.uk/Powerextra-Replacement-Compatible-DCR-VX2100-HDR-AX2000/dp/B079N3JPV9/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Sony+npf+batteries&qid=1573806994&sr=8-4
Ciao. Great video! Hi, "hell" with what formats can you record with MarkII?
Hi, thank you! You can record Prores and DNxHD with the Atomos.
@@AlwaysCinematic Thank you!
I’m thinking about getting the C100 mkii and pair it with the Ninja V would it record in ProRes 422 ?
Can it work also for the c100 mark 1 for achive the 4:2:2? however the video and the shot in complex are really beautiful.
Yes it does. There is a detailed comparison between C100 ii internal recording and external prores coming out on Friday which might help if you're debating buying a recorder.
Csn you please make a video on c500 4K pl
I have the Ninja Blade. What type of battery should I buy?
Something like this www.amazon.co.uk/Powerextra-Replacement-Compatible-DCR-VX2100-HDR-AX2000/dp/B079N3JPV9/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Sony+npf+batteries&qid=1573806994&sr=8-4
Hi,
What are the other powering options for the recorder?
Thanks
Hi, you can power it directory from Sony NPF batteries or with mains power via the DC input. You could also use the DC input to power it from a V mount if you have the right adapter
Hi
Can you please advise me can I use the monitor on canon 5d mark iv?
It should fine, but I'm pretty sure the 5d doesn't output 4k so it'd only be useful as a monitor.
Hi,
I am shooting with a Panasonic GH5 camera and a X 2 Anamorphic projection lens.
When I shoot in 24p with the GH5 the Atomos Ninja Inferno allows me to de-squeeze image with 2 X 4:3 option.
But when I shoot in 4K 60p with the GH5 the Ninja Inferno does not have 2 X 4:3 option.
Selecting manual mode on my GH5 seems to allow correct de-squeeze aspect ratio for 4K 60p, but there is clearly light & image quality loss shooting in ‘M’ manual mode, as apposed to shooting in Movie mode on GH5, which has mode specific to shooting with an Anamorphic lens.
I have latest V8.5 firmware, so update didn’t solve this problem.
Any ideas why this is?
You oversaturate.
