I have recently discovered that pouring boiling water inside the bottle melts the adhesive on the back of the label. It takes less than a minute to pour it in and remove the labels. They come off in one piece most of the time.
I have used this recipe as well. It does make a really fine chalk paint. Just make sure that you don't wash the paint residue, if you use glass measuring cups, in your indoor sink. Plaster of Paris is bad for your plumbing. I use old plastic jugs that can be thrown away or rinse the residue off the glass cup outside.
I thought this recipe was a great idea, and I'm sure it works well for most, but I wanted to add my experience for anyone who might be doing a similar project to save them from the hassle. My husband has also met another sign maker who ran into the exact same issues. I used this recipe to white wash the background on a bunch of my wood signs, and I applied the paint to the surface using this exact recipe and scraping the excess paint off the wood according to another Upcycled video to get that washed look. I don't know what I did wrong because I made this recipe according to the instructions several times. If ANY moisture touches this paint after it has dried and cured, it fades horribly and comes right off. So definitely seal it! I even hot glued some twine around the edges of a few signs and after about a week, it looked like there was grease all around the sides of the twine. So I tried sealing it. I did some research and found that water-based spar urethane works great for painted wood surfaces because it won't cause white paint to yellow. I tried that in both spray cans and brush on, interior and exterior. Spray worked great and did the trick wonderfully! However, the brush on urethane caused the white wash to thin so bad that I wanted to quit white washing anything altogether. But, it is water based spar urethane after all, so I'm sure the "water base" is what caused it to thin out. I've since stopped using this recipe in favor of the more expensive store bought chalk paints and there is a world of difference. We were recently advised by a professional wood worker to switch away from the spar urethane and spray on a crystal clear lacquer instead. He swore by it and said that is the only thing he ever uses, so we'll see. Maybe that will help seal this homemade chalk paint better. The other issue I've noticed is if you are using this chalk paint over pine wood, the knots tend to bleed quicker and heavier through this paint. Sometimes the cheap solutions end up causing long term headaches, and I feel like my product quality with this cheap paint has cheapened my work considerably.
Thanks for letting me know! I haven't had any of these problems but most of my work is very heavily distressed and layered so that could make a difference. I appreciate the tips :)

Made two batches and it totally thickened up....I looked at the type of paint I bought...it had PRIMER in it. Lesson learned and to share with others....make sure the flat paint does NOT have a primer mixed in with it! I eventually found FLAT ceiling paint with NO primer by Behr (but I am sure any ceiling paint will do). Finding a flat paint with NO primer proved to be very difficult.
Plaster of Paris added to acrylic paint as a slurry will begin to cure (harden) as soon as the dry form is hydrated. The reaction is mildly exothermic. IOW if the goal is to paint a large area best to mix the paint and PoP in small amounts and washing the brush or other applicator ASAP. Once set ecpecially in an acrylic or waterbourne medium at hard brush is only then good for mashing cockroaches or other creepy crawlers. A more forgiving home brew mix would be adding chalk (calcium carbonate) to the waterbourne medium (s) Be aware that adding either or both additives to aklyd (sometimes called oil base paints) is not going to work except a a filler. As of this date, the prices for "chalk paint" are dropping. Amazon has a name brand for nearly a US quart for $11.95 (30oz) This is much less than even the big box stores plus this same paintmaker has a flat or matte topcoat formulated for the protective coating over the fragile and very porous "chalk" paints. "Chalk" paints can also be tinted with UTC's (universal tinting colors) inexpensive artiists acylics, Inks and name brand fabric dyes. Paint recyclers generate many thousands of gallons of paint in limited colors from "old" acrylic base paints, Generally repackaged and sold in sometime gallon and many more time if 5 gallon lots. We might,i f tasked painting a whole exterior of a house, could add a sack full of chalk to some of this paint have house flipping as the new thing for chalk paint.

This sounds wonderful and of course the added bonus of your inkjet transfer video has me smiling!! I would like to know if you have used "chalk powder" as an alternative to PofP? I have quite a large container of chalk powder leftover from a homemade gesso recipe and thought to use it up. Thoughts? 😁😋
Hi Deirdre! I just tried this recipe using $6 gallon of latex paint from the “oops” bin at Home Depot. Quick question: I’d like to mix bigger batches but is there a shelf life??
I have a 4lb. sealed box of Plaster of Paris that I bought years ago. It has been sitting in a dark closet. Still sealed. I read where it can expire. What are your thoughts? Should I take a chance and mix up a small batch or just buy new?
Update. It worked. POP was still good. I guess it was because I had kept it in a dark closet and never opened the box. New question…is chalk paint supposed to be gritty or did I not stir it enough?
@@OurUpcycledLife After I noticed the grit I thought “maybe that is why Deidre sands between coats of paint!” I did try a second batch and mixed it better. Less grit. I read where someone said “ there is no such thing as overmixing chalk paint.“
Is there a trick to getting all the lumps out of the Plastre de aPris? Perhaps using a fork or whisk? I'm finding that it look blended (no chunks) but when I've put it on, there are still chunks still in it, then I have to sand. Thank you.
I heard you say to use a flat or eggshell colored paint. However if you want the paint to be colored, would you still use this flat or extra colored paint and just add a little colored acrylic into it? Or would you use the plaster of Paris and water and then add colored acrylic paint into it? Or do you mean that you can use a flat paint of any color?
Do you happen to know if “Perfect Plaster (pottery and ceramics)” and “Plaster of Paris” are the same? I went to Hobby lobby and it was the closest thing I could find. I have search the Internet but I have not had any luck finding the answer.
I just made your chalk paint. I used white paint but once I added the plaster of Paris it is now an off white. Is there anything I can add to make it white?
If your plaster is a darker colour it will darken the paint. I don't think there is anything you can do to lighten other then add less plaster. Thanks for watching
Problem, I've made this recipe twice and it's still on the thinner side, not at all like regular chail paint. Can I add a little more plastic of paris to thicken it? It is the same brand you are using..Thanks!

Or would you use the plaster of Paris and water and then add colored acrylic paint into it? Or do you mean that you can use a flat paint of any color?
You can use flat or matte paint in any colour to make this recipe!
@@OurUpcycledLife Thanks so much for your help!
Do you happen to know if “Perfect Plaster (pottery and ceramics)” and “Plaster of Paris” are the same? I went to Hobby lobby and it was the closest thing I could find. I have search the Internet but I have not had any luck finding the answer.
I am not sure I’ve never heard of that product so you might have to dig a little bit deeper into it and see if it is the same
Check with the hardware store, or the paint store for plaster of paris.
Can I use this for a finish that I can do modge podge photo transfer on. It says you should use chalk paint because it's the transfer sticks better
Yes, exactly
I just made your chalk paint. I used white paint but once I added the plaster of Paris it is now an off white. Is there anything I can add to make it white?
If your plaster is a darker colour it will darken the paint. I don't think there is anything you can do to lighten other then add less plaster. Thanks for watching
@@OurUpcycledLife thanks for taking the time to respond. You are inspiring me to try new things!
Hi. Your recipe (at end of video) says 1 cup of paint, but it looks like more measured off in the jug. Does it matter? Thanks.
It is one cup :) Thanks for watching
Maam what white are you using?
Does Enamel Based Paint works with water and plaster of Paris mixture?
I only use water based paint. Not enamel it wont mix in
Use any water base acrylic paint?
Yea you can but I feel latex paint works best 🌻
When using chalk paint, can you use a roller or is it designed to be brushed on only? Thank you
Either works
Do you use acrylic or latex paint.
Latex
Is flat paint emulation in the U.K. or something different? Thanks 😊
I am not sure sorry
I just watched your video. Can you use the recipe for multiple cups of paint? Like 4 cups paint, 1 1/3 cup of plaster of Paris and 1 1/3cup of water?
Yes you can!
Can you add acrylic paint for the color?
Yes you can add a bit but I like this recipe for colored chalk paint : ua-cam.com/video/U1gG7IGg_64/v-deo.html
Problem, I've made this recipe twice and it's still on the thinner side, not at all like regular chail paint. Can I add a little more plastic of paris to thicken it? It is the same brand you are using..Thanks!
You bet you can ! Weather will make a difference with consistency so just slowly add a little bit at a time till your happy with it ❤️
@@OurUpcycledLife glad to hear that, it's been very hot and humid here in Ohio. Again I just love you and your tutorials. I'm learning so much!
Glad to help out! Have a great day
