I’m a fluid artist. To get rid of little flakes and lumps, just pour your paint through a fine mesh colander into a fresh container before later use. I keep a small wire handled one with my supplies so it’s handy whenever I need it.

Awesome video. Last week I used all your instructions and painted my mother's desk. She has a small wood, solid desk that she wanted to keep but it was not in good condition. I made my chalk paint using your instructions and today she texted me saying she loves it more every day. Thank you so much! We spent less than $50 with new hardware for the drawers and everything. Now she has a beautiful desk with character and a story about how her daughter brought it back to life!

This is an easy, step-by-step, tutorial. I like how you had the separate measuring cups of different sizes, good visual presentation. People will remember the recipe so easy. The finale was the icing on the cake...when you spoke about the small obstacles to watch out for when choosing a product to seal with and the ending when you explained a few complications you experienced while using the chalk paint that you mixed and why it happened and how to correct it from happening to those of us who will try these techniques ourselves. Wonderful Video!

When I am painting from a container I put a piece of aluminum foil over the top, punch a hole in the middle and peel it back almost to the edge. This keeps the paint off of the rim.

I use 2tbsp water, 2 tbsp unsanded grout, and 8 oz latex paint... ive done fabric, concrete stairs, doors, tables, headboars, wrought-iron, etc. ... been sealing with minwax light and dark depending on how distressed I want the pieces. Try adding the plaster of paris to water, not other way around. And use hot water. I use more water so I can shake the plaster of paris water mixture. Then you need to leave the container so the solids settle to the bottom of the water. Throw the excess water off and add your paint. Use a kitchen sieve and strain the final mixture through it...

Thanks for putting up this video. While my stepson was at work, I, my wife, and his wife did a quick job on an old coffee table that was sitting in his basement disassembled. When he came home from work, he thought we had bought him a new table for Christmas! Sanding and painting it only took a few hours and it was dry to the touch when he saw it. Awesome stuff. My wife and I had done chalkpaint on some of our furniture but we bought it from a boutique and it cost quite a bit of money. This was super cheap and looked just as nice. We also put it on an old oak colored florescent ceiling light housing and it gave it new life and made it match much better with his kitchen.

This is EXACTLY what I was hoping to find.
I just spent 3 weeks building a crib mattress size farmhouse daybed for my dog. Needed a decent piece since it is in my livingroom. Today I applied a base coat of 1 part deep purple flat acrylic mixed with 2 parts water to create a thick stain or thin paint. Tomorrow I will use your method of paint and plaster of paris in a cream color like french vanilla. Then I'll do some distressing along the panel edges and other high-wear areas. I'm not positive yet on the sealing step but I'm leaning towards a liquid wax with a brown tint for some antiquing.
Thanks for your excellent video. I am so ready for this!

I followed these directions, but used drywall compound. I then coated it with 3 coats of Polyurethane (added 10 % water so it didn't dry quite so fast, as you can end up with brush strokes). It was an old, dark brown, antique desk that was in poor condition. I did sand the piece with a small, hand sander briefly, as there were areas where the finish was flaking off, and I wanted good paint adhesion. As well, I wanted a smooth texture, which is something I wouldn't have gotten had I left it unsanded. It turned out fabulous and it is holding up very well to daily use by our 4 children who use the computer on this desk to in our homeschool. Thank you! You saved me time in priming and money over purchasing real chalk paint. :-)

I like your explaining the different products you might already have lying around and what they will look like instead of having to buy exactly what is being used by someone to achieve their look. I just subscribed so I can learn a lot of new techniques. I'm hoping you will help keep me motivated to actually do some of the DIY I'd like to get done around my house.

Dear Mr. Dork, thank you for this great tutorial, I’m going to give it a try. Could I use this on a book shelf that I’ve already painted but is chipping in spots because I paint on the cheap veneer without sanding?

I have just tried this and am waiting for the second coat to dry. It has gone on beautifully, I kept spraying the brush with water and I have a lovely result. Thank you for sharing this, it will save so much money rather than spend a fortune on chalk paint. I am also going to order, off Amazon, calcium carbonate as this is what they use in chalk paint. Once again thank you, I am so happy....

l figured it was Plaster of Paris in Paint...and the Price l've seen Quarts of Milk Paint sell for is ridiculous...
$30 or more! That looks so awesome! l will never understand why some people freak out at the thought of painting wood? Sometimes it truly increases the value of Piece and painting furniture is an Art unto itself!

When I distress, I use the wet method. I let the chalk paint dry for maybe 20 minutes, then take a clean lint free rag , soak in water and wring out as much as possible, then start off lightly rubbing where you want to distress, and put as much pressure as you need to get the look you want, works great.

That's what I saw some other people doing to their chalk painted pieces too. I haven't tried that on this plaster/paint combo yet though.

Great video thanks I loved it! In my experience with wax over chalk paint I've never had to go back and wax it again months down the road. Waxed it in the beginning and I was done. Could it be that I used wax made for chalk paint as opposed to another wax?

    • @MrDiyDork
      @MrDiyDork  7 років тому +7

Yeah, that might be it. I don't always re-wax my pieces either, but it's definitely not as hard or permanent as other finishes. Probably the only time you'd really need to do it is on a piece that gets lots of use like tables tops, handles, etc.

You can use spackling instead of paster of Paris. It's already a wet consistency so no need to add water. Just a tip 🙂

Can chalk paint go right on any surface or do you need to sand first? I have an oak curio cabinet but it's finished with a shinier coat or maybe veneer? I love the cabinet but not that natural oak colour. I'd like to make it a nice espresso colour if I could.

    • @cassie5101

pinkyt67 Yes with chalk paint you can apply it to any surface. Then seal it, I like polycrylic. You can choose from matte to shiny and everything in between.
