I've made this and I can attest that it works great! I keep my homemade chalk paint in the sample bottle the paint came in. The first time I made this I had an 8 oz. bottle paint sample of Valspar. So I just added the water-calcium carbonate mixture directly into the sample bottle & mixed well. I still have some left in that original bottle and it's still fresh a few years later.
I used to work at Lowes as a paint specialist and Valspar paint is awesome, I love it and believe me when I say that I have no idea how anyone can have a good reason for charging so much for chalk paints. I love your directions for mixing the calcium carbonate with water first before mixing with your pain, and yes using flat paint is the way to go. Great job. Thanks for the video!
What a nice comment! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Valspar. It's my favorite go to paint to make chalk paint. They have preyed upon people's naivety. I'm a rebel out here on the interwebs speaking up.
Thank you. I just started, but I was using Plaster of Paris and was so frustrated with the lumps and fast drying time. I didn't even know it was toxic. Happy I saw your video, still after 3 years.
Hi Bethany, from Australia. Thank you for your tutorial on chalk paint. I mixed my first litre today and the recipe did not make sense. So I have been doing some research and found your's so much easier. There are many options out there. I'll just add my two cents. I tried plaster paris many moons ago. It gets lumpy and doesn't stay fresh. Calcium carbonate I found is the best additive out there. Smooth consistency and you can keep your paint over a weeks time and keep using it. (as long as you cover it)

Great! Thanks for the recipe. I am now looking forward to doing a couple of projects I’ve put off for a long time because of the cost of the chalk paint. I have a couple of questions about this if you (or someone viewing) can answer. Have you ever done a whole pint or quart right in the can? For instance in doing larger projects- or if you often use a particular color. What do you seal with? The furniture I’m doing is Mid Century Dressers- plain, simple lines- I really don’t want to use wax- if only because the brushes are too expensive for me right now- and also because I’m a one and done person, I know I’ll never go back to do it again when the time comes- if I dust I consider myself a living miracle! Lol And- what kind of brush do you use for the paint? It didn’t look like one of the big round brushes people always say you “need.” OH! Has anyone ever done kitchen cabinets? I’ve read varying opinions on it. Sorry for all the questions- if anyone can answer I’d appreciate it. Thanks again! Just subscribed!
I'll try to get to all your questions. First thank you for subscribing! Welcome! Yes you can add the calcium carbonate directly into a pint or a quart of paint. Remember to add the water and stir stir stir. Just make sure you stir it completely in. I seal most of my chalk painted piece with a water based poly. I like High Performance Flat by General Finishes. Super easy to apply. Wax has it's place on some pieces, but it's a hassle to buff it. I usually paint with Cling On Brushes. They are on the expensive side but they are worth it to me. No shedding like the round brushes and the paint washes right off. I beat to my own drum with my flipping business and here on UA-cam. I don't jump on to trends and I definitely will tell people the truth when it comes to what works and what doesn't. There's some areas yes where you can go cheap with supplies and other areas where I would advise investing in better tools and supplies. Kitchen cabinets I would recommend an enamel paint vs. chalk paint. Enamel paint has the topcoat built in the paint. The most important piece to painting kitchen cabinets and the prepping part. I hope I answered all your questions.
I am so grateful for your video! Finally a guide I understand! I am beginning to learn about paint. Difficult subject. I think paint manufacturers should be tried at the Hague for their uninformative labels. Here everything is in Italian, there is no "latex paint", do you think "acrylic enamel" would be it? Xx
Hi, love your videos! I’m new at flipping and def gonna try this recipe. For using chalk paint on varnished or stained surfaces, I’m going to do a scuff sand at your recommendation, but would you still then shellac before using the chalk paint?
Yeaaaaa! Glad you found me! To answer your question I use shellac mainly when I’m painting with light colors. I definitely use it with white (always) light grays, light greens, etc. You will definitely need to shellac beforehand with any color besides black and dark navy.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 HI there, so I got the Valspar Signature, same can as you had in the video, and it says on the label '100% acrylic latex' ??
Thanks for sharing this recipe! Cant wait to try it. my I ask about priming… do you ever use primer before using your chalk paint and if so, when do you use primer?
You’re so welcome I hope the recipe works well for you. Yes sometimes I do use a primer before I apply chalk paint. It all depends on the color of paint I’m using. If I’m painting a piece white I will first apply two coats of white primer that is shellac based. You have to get the primer that is shellac based or it won’t block stains and wood tannins coming to the surface. If I’m painting a piece a mint green I will apply clear shellac (two coat) before I apply my chalk paint. Every time I paint with chalk paint I do first apply a primer of sorts, so it’s either clear shellac or a white primer with a shellac base.
Chalk paint can be used in a spray gun if it’s the right consistency. Sometimes chalk paint can run a tad thicker than regular paint. Depends on the specific sprayer.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 do you have to use latex paint if you are using much smaller amounts of paint? Would this work with the little 2 oz bottles of paint you can pick up at Walmart? If so, how much powder would use use in that amount?
Just watched this video.. I read a comment about it not working with acrylic paint. OH.....I am working on a project and I used plaster of paris and Behr's premium plus flat "acrylic" Paint. Will it peel off? What should I do? I went ahead and ordered the calcium carbonate you suggested for the rest of the project. This is my first time making my own chalk paint...Should I sand down the piece I'm working on? Thankfully I started with the small piece.. Thanks for the video. Very informative.
I'm not entirely sure how to advise you. I've never made chalk paint out of an acrylic base before. Just latex paint. How's your paint holding up thus far?
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Well, first...I'm not liking the color! Second it seems to be distressing "too easy" if that makes sense. I started by cleaning with Heirloom traditions furniture prep. I did a rinse with plain water. Then I primed twice with Zinnzer BIN 123 primer. Not sure why it's sanding down that easy. Maybe too chalky to honest. I could have added too much of the dreaded plaster of paris thatI didn't realize was toxic until now!
Thank you for this! Can’t wait to try it!! I just ordered my CC on Amazon!😃 I love using chalk paint because it’s so easy to distress. I’ve also used a damp terry cloth rag to distress and it works great. Just curious, do you use a special chalk paint brush or just a regular one?
So happy to read your comment that this video helped you! Are used to use those round specific chalk paint brushes but I found they shed too much. I now only strictly use Cling On brushes. They don’t shed at all, easy to clean and give me a smooth finish.
I've been making chalk paint with plaster of Paris, however I'll probably change to the calcium carbonate if Bethany confirms that the white paint colour doesn't change when using the CC. I find the white paint changes to a grey white when using plaster of Paris which doesn't work for my crafts as I need the chalk paint whiter. I store my chalk paint in a large mouth mason jar with a plastic Ball lid. I just finished using a batch that I made in January.
Good day, Thank you for this detailed and money saver video. I had to write you to ask if you know the difference between latex and latex dispersion paint? Google didn't give me a clear answer, at the same time I am not that educated in paints as I believe you are. Another question: I found here (Switzerland) only white latex, so what should I use to tone it, pigments or acrylic paint or what is your advice? Thank you in advance for your help and time. I really appreciate all what you do to help and teach us how to renew the looks in our homes. Best wishes.
Off topic question…Up top left hand corner in the back is something that resembles a clock but when I very first noticed it, it looks more like my antique kitchen scale. Am I seeing things cause I’ve never seen another like mine? TIA
Hi Joan! Glad you found this video helpful. Yes I used a water based latex paint. I used Valspar which can be found at Lowes. Make sure you get the matte or flat finish. That works the best when making homemade chalk paint.
Hi Bethany, You are an inspiration. I am looking forward to make my own chalk paint too. The water based latex paint that you used is for furniture or for walls. I have inquired all the painting shops here in UAE and they say that they have latex paint only for walls and not furniture. For furniture they have latex which is oil based. Please suggest
Ahhhh thank you so much! That's my hope is to inspire others. Latex paint is latex paint. So if they are telling you it's for just walls is weird. Yes get the latex paint (even if they say it's only for walls), that's what I get just plain old latex paint. BUT please remember to get it in a flat or matte sheen. That's very important. Definitely don't get oil based. I hope that answered your question.
Hi Bethany. I'm going to make my chalk pain and see how it works. Thanks for the helpful video. Do you seal it with Polycrylic Top Coat or Wax or something. Thanks.
Hi Kathy! I seal my painted projects with either wax or water based Polycrylic. It all depends on the look I’m going for AND how the piece will be used. Polycrylic offers more durable protection vs. wax. Wax also provides protection just not as much as Polycrylic.
Looks great I’m gonna try! One question, can you blend this like those “high end” brands? (I see this video is a couple years old, hoping u will still see this, lol)
Do you apply wax as a finish? I have used chalk paint before to save old furniture and for crafting but it is pricey to buy premixed. Thanks for sharing.
Joanne Wolff There are two different products I use for a top coat over chalk paint. Wax and water based Polycrylic. Really depends on the use of the piece of furniture. If it’s a higher traffic piece I would advise Polycrylic. It also depends on the overall look I’m aiming for. If I want a more not so shiny look, but a slight sheen I’ll use wax. If I want a more glossy look I use Polycrylic. It should be noted Polycrylic comes in different sheens. I usually use matte or satin. To me Polycrylic is shiner than clear wax.
Can you use this method with any color or is lighter better? I’m VERY NEW to this my “free found on road dresser” just cost me 135$ with 2 quarts of rust oleum paint, a clear coat and a couple cans of chalk spray paint! Not sure why I got the spray paint. I found color’s not a wide variety also the clear coat turned my project yellow. 😢 This is a great tip- thanks
Oh nooooo! Okay I’ll going to help you save some big bucks. A free roadside dresser shouldn’t be costing you this much in materials. Let’s talk paint. To answer your question yes you can use this calcium carbonate with ANY shade of paint. Use a latex paint and a low sheen. I love Valspar paint from Lowe’s. If you don’t want to make your own chalk paint I’ll recommend two budget friendly brands. Walmart’s chalk paint called Waverly. It’s in the craft section, not the paint section. Also Rustoleum makes a nice chalk paint as well. That can be found at Walmart as well. I would stay away from any type of spray paint. Your project yellowed probably because either 1. You didn’t prep correctly or 2. You used an oil based clear coat.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I did purchase the rust oleum from Walmart, 2 quarts plus the chalked matt clear. @ 25 bucks each. Throw in the unneeded spray paint at 12 bucks a can. I got two because well because I was clueless! lol the other $35 was on brushes, tape, sponges, and krud kutter, sandpaper etc. I was seeing myself up for sucess. Now I have leftover’s. lol heading to ace hardware soon for some minwax finish. Already ordered my calcium carbonate after watching you.
I make my own chalk paint too! But my recipe is 4 T of CC and 2 T of water. And 1 cup of flat paint and I blend mine all together in a blender I thrifted 😁 I wonder what the difference is in recipe I may try yours and see how it may differ in the end result of paint.
Thanks for subscribing!!!! I seal my chalk painted areas with either a wax or a water based sealer like Polycrylic. I have never chalk painted anything metal or glass so I'm not able to offer advise there.
Me encantó el tutorial, pero con qué otro tipo de pintura puedo reemplazar por la que mencionas, ya que son muy costosas para mí vivo en México Gracias
Hi Bethany! You are a REVELATION to me!!! Love your videos, instagram, Facebook page! I don’t want to come off as a stalker lol!! So my question: do you use chalk paint on all the furniture you flip? Do you sometimes use the regular latex paint? And for which projects? Thank you!
Amelie Deschenes Hey there!!! I’m so glad you have found me all over the interwebs. 😉 Don’t worry I don’t think you are a stalker. Ha! On most of my furniture projects I use latex paint and make my own chalk paint. So most of my projects that you see that’s what I use.
Hello. I just came upon your video and I am over the moon excited!! I paint and flip furniture and would love to save money on chalk paints! My question is can you use other lines of Valspar such as the Medallion line? It’s a few bucks more but the nearest Lowe’s is about 45 minutes away and the nearest store doesn’t carry the signature. Also I am assuming you get it in Flat?
Cassandra Smith Hi fellow flipper!!! Yes you can use calcium carbonate with other paints. I’ve used it with Benjamin Moore as well as Valspar. So any latex paint. The one key thing you have to remember make sure the finish is flat or matte if you use a satin or glossy it doesn’t work as well.
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC. Hello again my fellow furniture flipping friend! I got the Calcium Carbonate in and my question now is if I want to make a larger amount say 1 pint I would just double the ingredients?
Hi Madeline, thank you for this information, how is the adhesion of this diy paint? And second question is: Do you have a wax preference? Based on value and easy to use?
Hi Ninna! The adhesion is excellent AS LONG AS YOU PREP CORRECTLY. I wrote that in caps on purpose because it's vital to any paint that you use. Most paint fails in the adhesion department not because of the paint per say but because people don't prep their surface correctly. I love the clear wax by Annie Sloan. It's buttery smooth, goes on easy and buffs to a beautiful sheen.
Hi, would like to thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge regarding chalkpaint. Have a small question, can you buy only white latex paint and mix with color pigments with the color you should use, instead of buying lots of different cans of paint, and then mix to your recipe for chalk paint? Oops, it was not a small question, it got a little bigger! Looking forward to your reply. Thank you Cristina from Sweden.
I’m so glad you found some useful information from my tutorial. 😁 Regarding color pigments...I myself have never added color pigments to latex paint. I do know the biggest factor when making your chalk paint is making sure the sheen of latex needs to be either flat or matte. If you get a sheen that’s higher than that you will have consistency issues. My advice? Try to mix the latex with calcium carbonate and the color pigments. See what happens. I’m curious too.
Because it takes relatively small amts of latex paint per project, an idea may be to buy small containers of true white, black, yellow, red & blue latex paints. With these, you can mix any colours you want. Try to make sure that they are as true to the colours as possible without a lot of other tones in them.
I'm originally from NH too, born in Franklin! I sure do miss those beautiful fall colors! I now live in Texas where I am very aware of GLOBAL WARMING!!! UGH! I hate the heat! Thank you for sharing this wonderful information with us!!
Oh wow! Small world! When I first moved here I lived in Laconia. The leaves are almost at their peek colors this week. So beautiful here during autumn. Texas is quite the change eh? I had a temp job in Austin for four months many years ago. I loved all the BBQ places to eat. I gained 10 pounds while there! I loved the food!
When I make chalk paint using plaster of Paris, it turns a little greyish. Does the calcium carbonate powder change the colour of the white paint? Thanks in advance 👍
Can I use floetroll paint additive in your chalk paint receipt to help eliminate brush marks for a glass-like finish? Or do you have another suggestion?
That's a great question! I've never used chalk paint but I've been watching a ton of videos. I've seen videos where the finish looks rough. I know a lot of people want that type of finish, but I personally prefer smooth.
The main purpose with chalk paint is that it dries super fast and gives off a matte, chalky appearance which is great for distressing. Adding floetroll would defeat the purpose in a sense because people purposely choose chalk paint because of it's fast dry time. I also don't know how it would react with the chalk paint recipe. I avoid brush marks two ways. I use Cling On Brushes. Definitely worth the hype. That's all I use. Also by sanding in between each painted coat. When I say sand I mean hand sand with 400-500 grit sandpaper. Not aggressive. Feather like. I wrap the sand paper around a felt block.
marie clark Interesting. I used to use plaster of Paris but it gets lumpy. Calcium carbonate is super smooth almost not detectable once it’s mixed into the paint.
The calcium carbonate runs around $16.50 for 12 ounces. A cup of paint would vary depending on the brand. When I get a sample of paint by Valspar it runs me $4.00. So with the calcium carbonate I would charge $5.00 in paint. Remember I'm only using a couple of table spoons of the calcium carbonate. Then take into account how much paint will it take to complete a project. I hope that helps.
I've made this and I can attest that it works great! I keep my homemade chalk paint in the sample bottle the paint came in. The first time I made this I had an 8 oz. bottle paint sample of Valspar. I am beginning to learn about paint. Difficult subject. I think paint manufacturers should be tried at the Hague for their uninformative labels.
Here everything is in Italian, there is no "latex paint", do you think "acrylic enamel" would be it? Xx
Thank you for the recipe, you helped me a lot 😮❤
My pleasure 😊

@@karenhickey3377 Whoo hoo!!! That’s awesome! Welcome!
Thank you queen :-) saved me from an expensive diy!
Awesome! Glad my video helped!
Great idea! Can you do this with different colors?
Yes of course!
Hi will the calcium carbonate work in acrylic paint as well? Thanks for your information!
It will not work with acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is chemical based whereas latex paint is water-based.
Thank you for sharing this information. You may have answered this question already, but can this recipe be used in a spray gun?
Chalk paint can be used in a spray gun if it’s the right consistency. Sometimes chalk paint can run a tad thicker than regular paint. Depends on the specific sprayer.
Thanks it seems so easy! Can’t wait to make it! Thanks
Have fun! Best of luck with your project!
Question. Can this chalk mixture be used on glass for decoupaging? Also l love your videos and the way you explain everything is awesome
Thanks for liking my videos! I don't know if this will work on glass. You need to use an adhesive product of some sort to do decoupaging.
Love this video. Love saving money. If you are using a dark color will it make the paint lighter or change the color in any way? Will black turn gray?
Thanks for watching! No the calcium carbonate will not turn your paint color a lighter color.

I personally haven't painted glass jars or glass vases with chalk paint but I do know a lady that painted mason jars with it with great success.
Thank you SO much for this information ❤️
Julie Clark Awesome! I’m glad you found this information valuable.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 do you have to use latex paint if you are using much smaller amounts of paint? Would this work with the little 2 oz bottles of paint you can pick up at Walmart? If so, how much powder would use use in that amount?
Lovely idea... Can acrylic paint when mixed with calcium carbonate turns into chalk paint?
I personally haven't mixed it but I've seen a couple of people mix craft paint with calcium carbonate with success.
Hello .can I use any acrylic paint for the calcium carbonate. Even the wall pain
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 What is the brand of those brushes? Can you please post a link?
Can I use acrylic paint instead? I need mine for wooden art signs.
You can!
Should you mix small amounts or can you do big batches? How long does it last, shelf life after you do the cc to paint? Thank you so much for this!
I mix only what I need for each project. I find that works best. I find the shelflife to be anywhere between 2 to 3 weeks sometimes even longer.
Good day,
Thank you for this detailed and money saver video.

I make the chalk paint from different colored water based latex paints.

You're welcome!
Do you use a top coat of some kind? And thanks
Yes either a wax or a water based poly.
Wow awesome video enjoyed, thank you so much, one question
Did you use latex paint is water based? Thank you in advance.
Hi Joan! Glad you found this video helpful. Yes I used a water based latex paint. I used Valspar which can be found at Lowes. Make sure you get the matte or flat finish. That works the best when making homemade chalk paint.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Thank you so much for Reply.
Great video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Hi, I just found your channel. Can you use any color latex paint with the same recipe to make different colors? Thanks for any help
Yes you can! Any color.
Looks great I’m gonna try! One question, can you blend this like those “high end” brands? (I see this video is a couple years old, hoping u will still see this, lol)
Question…what do you mean high end brands? As long as it’s a latex paint you should be fine. Remember to get a matte/flat finish.
Can this be used for chalk paste for reusable transfer stencils ? Thank you
waverly is the best line of paints
Waverly is a great chalk paint priced much lower than other chalk paints.
This is a great tip- thanks

Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC thank you so much not only for responding but for a great video!!
And second question is:
Do you have a wax preference? Based on value and easy to use?
Hi Ninna! The adhesion is excellent AS LONG AS YOU PREP CORRECTLY. I wrote that in caps on purpose because it's vital to any paint that you use. Most paint fails in the adhesion department not because of the paint per say but because people don't prep their surface correctly. I love the clear wax by Annie Sloan. It's buttery smooth, goes on easy and buffs to a beautiful sheen.
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC thanks again!!i asume preparing is a deep cleaning, or should I sand lightly?
Would I be able to make an ombre effect with this home made chalk paint?
Yes you should be able to make an ombre effect with making your own chalk paint.
What do you use to paint faux leather couch? Is it the same chalk paint recipe? Do you sand, add fabric shortened? What kind of wax if any at the end?
I've never painted a couch before so I am unable to advise.
How can i make it more of a chalk paste to use with special stencils for craft projects.
Can I use this recipe on fabric? And what about darker colours? Can they stay same colour with that white powder? Thank you
I have never painted fabric so I can’t advise on that. This recipe works fine with darker colors.
What do you do about colors? I'm needing an eggplant color.
You can mix the calcium carbonate in any color.
Thank you so much for the intructions 🩵💛🩵
is that enough paint to cover the entire piece?
Yes it is.

When I make chalk paint using plaster of Paris, it turns a little greyish. Does the calcium carbonate powder change the colour of the white paint? Thanks in advance 👍
It does not change the color.

????????
What brand of wax do you use after you paint???????thank you
I've used Annie Sloan, Maison Blanche (no longer available) and now I use Debi's Design DIY wax.
Love your videos!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you leaving a nice comment!
Can I mix it with a colour paint
Yes you can. Latex paint works best. Any color.
How does this recipe do when blending two colors?
I understand that you can also mix talc to make chalk paint.

The talc doesn't work well
Do you seal/protect your projects with anything after painting with chalk paint?
Yes I always apply a topcoat. I either apply a wax OR a water based topcoat like Polycrylic.
That’s awesome, I would like to try but what’s the pricing formula if anyone asked me to paint a piece for them !! Thanks
Can you use with acrylic paint
I’ve only used this recipe with latex paint.
